    In my experience with this plant, it does NOT like bright indirect unless from a grow light. I have had them in both south and west facing widows only to see the turtles bleach out. This is with them further back too. I have found that since they usually grow in tropical regions and in the floor of forests and swamps, they actually enjoy their dark time. What I do to maintain them is I provide a 'fake day' of light with a grow light (I chose during the night while I sleep) in my bathroom. They get the moisture they love and the light at the crown of the plant. The turtle shells have more brilliant color and detail since I started doing this. To make more, I experimented with soils and moss and found that you do not have to submerge an end of the strand at all, they have rooted faster for me if I simply lay the strand out. This method has worked many times without fail. I do have a question though, why are they considered to be a succulent such as pearls and bananas? Is this because of holding the moisture in the leaves? Because they HATE the care routine of these plants. I actually just planted some together to get the look I desire and they seem to be growing well together, but I worry, as they grow, letting the pearls dry more may hurt the shells.

    I just bought one rooted leaf here in New Zealand (as they not allowed here and very hard to get) for $50😱
    It is coming in terracotta pot in good mix.
    I was told to put in a lidded container with spagmoss (it’s winter here)
    When would be good to take it out to get used to my room environment- I have bright light room.
    Should I then use a humidifier around it? Thanks !

      OMG!!! this makes me want to break the law and send you one lol but what's the real reason is it somehow invasive maybe if it was to get into your nature? I wish lived in New Zeland head you guys also don't have snakes but the most beautiful forests. and about your leaf, hope it roots cuz $50! but wanted to tell you that put a few vines in a sushi container with moss and everyone is growing like crazy considering putting my main plant in some sort of terrarium. anyway tell me more about this plant ban and how you got your leaf lol

    • @Nessa___

      Legally you can grow them and trade but not commercially which is why they are expensive.

    Thank you for sharing what is considered a humid environment. I live in a very humid environment so I run a dehumidifier in my house and I always worry about my plants. I avoid buying anything tropical. I have been keeping it set around 50%. Glad to hear this will be OK for my new turtle plants. I was a bit concerned. Also my turtle vine is about 3 to 4 yards from a west facing window and about another 3 yards from and east facing window. Should this be enough light? Sure note, enjoyed the calming music and low stress feel of your video.

      I’m not 100% certain but I think the light you’re giving it might be too intense. I’ve heard that the pattern can disappear from the leaves when its basically “bleached” by the sun /intense light.

      Thanks so much, Adrienne, that's very nice of you! I am fortunate to have a local nursery in south-central Pennsylvania that has a great selection, which is where I found these string of turtle propagations. Etsy has some good sellers if you do your research.

    Hello, I'm wondering if you would suggest a cacti/ succulent fertilizer for this plant? These "string of turtles" tend to be expensive and hard to find where I live. I'm trying to rescue one that I found at a supermarket for only $10 that had been over shaded and over watered. Lots of the older leaves are dying back, showing some signs of rot, but it does have some nice new growth since I let it dry out, however I'm concerned about it as I'm not very good with houseplants. Thank you in advance for the help. 🙂

  • @elisabethnickles8697

    i just got one from someone and overpaid for it . then i watered it from above bc it was completely dry then the delicate strings broke and it is half dead. i'm usually not bad w plants but it seems to me this one is hard - easy to overwater. i read that you should bottom water these somewhere but then i read the roots are shallow so to water from above. i moved the plant to a clay pot to dry it out faster. it's so fragile... i don't know what to do to save it.

    • @330rj4

      try top watering and leave it by a window with the smallest crack. it needs air circulation bc the leaves will rot if water it sitting on them

    when you propagate these via soil, do you place some ziplock over it for humidity for rooting or just leave it as is and wait?

    • @PlantBoy
      @PlantBoy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doing that is not necessary. It would certainly aid in helping the plant establish if it’s a humidity loving tropical plant. I would only do so indoors, as it gets warmer in the bag and can easily get too hot inside if it’s placed outside on a hot day. If it’s a more arid climate plant e.g succulents, aloe, cacti, snake plant, I would not place a bag over the propagation.

    How’s your string of turtles now? I just ordered online and I dont know what to do because it is so delicate and it is just in a 2” pot. Should I repot it if the soil is too wet? should I place it in a window with bright light? When should I water it?

    • @PlantBoy
      @PlantBoy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s doing very well. You can see it in the updated houseplant tour video going live tomorrow. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. If it’s too wet it shouldn’t be a problem unless it’s been waterlogged consistently. Give it medium to bright indirect light as stated in the video.

    • @PlantBoy

    • @PlantBoy

      Sounds like it might not be getting water enough, or may not have enough humidity. Try to keep it on the moist side / letting the first inch or two of soil dry out. I wouldn’t recommend letting it dry out entirely considering its tropical origin
