    Hi, I have a question. I understand why the capacitor is extending the time that the electromagnet in the relay stays on, but I don't know why it also extends the time the electromagnet stays off. Be cause in the demo, I can clearly hear that the clicking is very consistent.

    • @shaneh4013
      @shaneh4013 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm new, but i'll to explain with the best of my ability. You are correct the electromagnet stays off longer. but its soo minuscule that its unnoticeable to the human senses. considering electrons move at the speed of light (3 * 10^8 m/s) and the only resistance is that of a copper wire (1.72 x 10-8 Ω per metre). the time difference for it to charge can be calculated using t=rc. assuming that a capacitor has a capacitance of 1000µF. t = 1.72 x 10-8 Ω * 1000µF. therefore t = 1.72 x 10-11 seconds. This capacitor takes five time constants to fill, 1.72 x 10-11 x 5 = 8.6x10-11. it would take 8.6e-11 seconds for the battery to fill the capacitor. As I said, soo minuscule that your senses would never realise.

    • @theflamethrower867
      @theflamethrower867 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the power in the cap has to go somewhere, so it discharges itself and dumps its power into the electromagnet, therefore keeping the relay off after the power has been disconnected.

    technically you could use this circuit and depending on the capacitor design a metronome for music

    • @AntPDC

      I'd imagine the frequency reference for the oscillation (capacitor and relay) would introduce plenty of rubato!

    for anyone who's relay "isn't working", make sure your battery is strong enough to activate the coils. if you have a 12 volt relay, you need a minimum of around 9.6 volts.

    by rights, you should have a diode stunt the replay coil to protect the switch from arcing when the magnetic field collapses which induces a high current

    "Codenmore" #+!.... hello, thank you for making this series you are actually a very good teacher btw.
    Q. If I wanted to increase my capacitance would I want to run multiple capacitors in series or Parallel? I think if I put them in series I will get the same amps and if parallel I will increase the amps ... is this correct?

    *Summary:*
    - an relay oscillator is an electronic component that quickly switches between turning a circuit on (completing it) and off (opening it)
    - in our example, our oscillator controlled the circuit to the speaker
