@@ranikhanam572 It's not really dangerous if it only gets on the outside of the bird's body and it's soon rinsed off.. In extreme cases you can dry out the birds feathers and skin causing irritation. Remember that vets still to this day use concentrated dishwashing soap to clean birds, cats and other animals which have gotten soaked in oil. I had a cat that fell into a barrel of motor oil. Completely doused in oil except for the cats head. She's a Siamese cat too so it was shocking to see her all black. Anyways I took her to the vet and they used Dawn dish soap. They then told me to wash her every day, once a day with Dawn until it's gone. With that said, the biggest thing to consider would be him ingesting the soapy water which can cause some really bad side effects and possibly kill the bird if it intakes enough. If you've ever accidentally ate concentrated soap but it's not fun to say the least. But it sounds like OP's bird jumped in and they immediately got the bird out. At least I hope this is the case.
@@ranikhanam572 mine do the same! I have two conures and as soon as they hear me doing dishes, they flock to me and crawl up and down my arms while I'm washing up and try to get under the faucet. Makes doing dishes even more laborious but it's too cute to shoo them away

BE THE TRUTH - Ha! They are quite drawn to water it seems. Mine seems to think that he should be involved in anything that involves the water running. Showers, dish washing, washing machine filling - He flies over and does a little fluffy excited dance. It almost seems religious his worship of water. Because of this we call turning on any water source a “Water Ceremony” in my house 😋🦜

Paco love birdie shower time! He prefers you to hold your hand under the water or to take a bath in his clean water dish. He likes nice loooonnnnggg hot showers with lots of water pressure and is so not down for the spray bottle lol.

Awesome! Mine has his bath bowl in my big man-shop in the North Canadian bush...he uses it every night and then perches by the woodstove to dry up and dance to the radio! At the end of the night we go in....have a hot shower and yes, he sits on the shower rod....so cool.

I just spent $400 at the vet today for my green cheek annual check up. Usually it is only $300, but still I pay much more than the $450 I paid to adopt him every year for his care. I did the math once and figured out you will likely spend $30,000 on your green cheek over his lifespan if he lives to his natural old age of 30 years. That covers his initial cost plus food, toys, annual vet visit, and boarding, this does not include likely additional costs like if your bird gets sick or hurt or you want to buy him a new cage or some more expensive toys or foods or participate in bird training seminars or something. Long story short, get ready to enjoy your little buddy, they really are great, but also get ready to PAY for the privilege of being his parront 🤑
BooBoo likes cold, not warm bathes. About every 3-4 days, or into her water bowl, only after I clean it and fill with fresh water. Her first bath was two days after becoming my forever friend. She jumped into her water dish. Thank you for the video of Marco.
Bendetta Kreutzer - Awwww so cute. Funny how each bird has their own personal manner of bathing they are most comfortable with. Marco used to bathe in his dish before he came to live with me. Marco Leapt onto a bath soon after coming to live with me. I think it was to wash off the stress of the transition.
Hi, my conure likes cold water also, he use to jump in his water dish but now likes the bathroom sink, i put a washcloth down and run cold water, he loves it!!

Hahaha! He has changed his method a few times over the years. His current preference is bathing from a glass in our kitchen. Whatever floats his boat. And yes, Marco is very particular about how he is groomed.

Connie teh birb - Ah yes! I didn’t include this option. Apparently, Marco used to do this too before he was in my care. If your bird prefers this, then I think it is a fine way to go as long as he/she gets fresh water after her bath (no one wants to drink dirty bath water)😋 One possible reason for providing some of these alternatives would be, if the birds water bowl is not big enough for the bird to get fully wet and feel fully clean. My personal reason for offering the sink bath is because I find that after about 4 days Marco starts to get stressed if he hasn’t had a bath. I can tell because his behavior changes: he makes these incessant plaintive noises, is easily frightened, is grouchy, and nothing seems right in his world. Once he has a good full bath all of these behaviors disappear for another 3-4 days until it’s time to have a bath again. I offer the sink alternative because he is open to this option long before he would resort to bathing in his water dish. BUT if your bird is happy to problem solve their bathing needs in their water dish when the need strikes them, I don’t see anything wrong with this. FANTASY CRICKET SARKAR - it’s hard to know. I would say, go with your gut here. If your bird is acting differently than he usually does, it would be a good idea to have your bird checked by a vet. Birds are so good at hiding illness that by the time you notice something is wrong they are often very sick and can decline rapidly. A few months back, I noticed my bird was acting a bit different. I couldn’t put my finger on how he was acting differently, but my instincts were telling me something was off. He eventually started to get more snuggly and sleepy than usual and even slept with his beak tucked into his wing in front of me - something I have never seen him do. I took him to the vet and they ran some tests. Turns out my water system had been infected with E-coli (a serious stomach bacteria) and my bird had caught it. Once the issue was identified, it was easy to give him a course of antibiotics twice a day for two weeks mixing it with a little sweet yogurt. Today, he is healthy and happy again, but I am so glad I listened to my gut and took him in to the vet. I think you will be too. If nothing else, it will give you peace of mind to know he is well and you can look at what other environmental factors may be contributing to your birds increased silence. My conure LOVES his bath time. I put him in the sink, run the water until the slightly warm water is up to his body. Basically his feet and legs are submerged. He bathes as I get his food ready on the counter beside the sink. He also likes for the water to continue running on low pressure so he can get the top of his head wet. Also so he can drink the fresh water. I'd like to suggest doing a video on alternatives to the wood pellets / chips (or whatever it's called) you put at the bottom of the bird cage. That stuff is so expensive for what is essentially scrap wood and saw dust pressed into small cylinders.
Bilb Ono - awww sounds like such a cute little routine you guys have. Conures sure love their routines. 😂 That’s a good idea for a video. I will write it down. I personally use paper towels which can be composted or a pillow case which can be washed and reused. I have also saved up old seed shells and pellet food until it covered the bottom and used that. Other people use old newspapers, magazines, mail and scrap paper. This would be best with a cage that has a grating over the tray because I think it’s not healthy for the bird to eat the ink print. As for the paper pellets and wood shavings, there is nothing special about them that makes them better than the choices outlined above, as far as I know. Just another way to get you to spend money in the pet industry. What do you think? Do you seen any benefit to the shavings or pellets over paper or washable products? Let me know! Mine refuses to get in the shower, but will cheerfully walk along the curtain rod, I tried the sink bit a few times, its always a big no, I generally use the shallow bowl bit more. Then the big dummy will bathe in his drinking water dish instead.
My bird is scared of everything. She won't get close to running water and will fly away. She hates me getting pinfeathers and will bite me and make me bleed every single time I get close to get one. I've had her for 8 or so years, and got her when she was a couple months old. I think she trusts me, but seems to be scared of just about anything, any tips?
Wow, she does sound fearful. Sounds like maybe you could eliminate things in her environment that scare her. If she is in a noisy or high traffic area in your home you could try giving her a quieter room to feel safe and take a rest in. Be sure she has a stand close to a wall in a more enclosed area so that she does not have to keep looking over her shoulder for danger. Cover at least 50% of her cage so that she can see out the front but can take refuge and feel safe in the back. Consider where you spend time with her if it is a large open space with many windows she may feel fearful of an aerial attack from a hawk. I know this is not a rational fear, but it’s programmed into her genetics. Green cheek conures are hollow nesters so if you imagine a tree hollow that you might see an owl nesting in, this is their ideal space where they Can peak out and watch the world or hide deep in the tree hole for safety when needed. This is to give you an understanding of their psychology of what makes them feel safe and at home - a safe enclosed area that they can watch the world from. Try to make sure she has some places that provide her with this feeling. In terms of your relationship, you can build trust by listening very carefully to what she is trying to tell you. Bird experts say that if your bird bites you it means you have ignored the many non-violent ways they have tried to tell you “No” before they finally had to haul off and bite you as a last resort. If you haven’t already, See if you can notice all the ways she tells you “No” before biting and be sure to listen to her when she says “No” unless her safety is in danger. The trainers from BirdTricks recommend that you always ask your bird if she will do something and listen for her response. So instead of saying, “Step Up” they say to always ask “Will you step up?” This actually changes your behavior toward the bird and makes them more trusting of you and hopefully ensures that you listen for their response. If she doesn’t want to step up, then there are plenty of times that’s okay and you can just leave her. Trust her that she has her reasons. Of course there are times when you need her to step up or go in the cage. Still work towards a “yes” from her for these important behaviors through training. Will your bird go in the cage because you told her to? “No!” Will she go in for 3 sunflower seeds? “Now you might have a deal!” Every bird has their price. 😉 There is literally nothing my bird won’t do for a safflower or sunflower seed. I highly recommend target training paired with clicker training to to build trust and confidence with your bird. My bird used to hate my boyfriend and fly attacked him and bit him till he bled. It was not a good scene. For the last 3 months my boyfriend has been target training my bird every day for 15 minutes. This helped reset the relationship between them and build my birds trust in him. Now my bird requests to hang out with my boyfriend and train every day and they also can hang out together when I am not home. My boyfriend has trained my bird to come when he calls him and fly to certain perches in the house so they can hang out together. He never has to pick him up or have him on his shoulder when I am gone (we are still working on that) but he can totally get my bird to do what ever he needs to do through target training and rewarding. An important, but unintended consequence of my boyfriends training has also been that my bird is much better at flying and more confident in his surroundings. If your bird’s wings are clipped I would recommend allowing them to grow out and to allow her to learn to fly. This will build her confidence and make her less fearful and consequently less aggressive. Good question, hope this helps. Let us know how it goes and if you have any other questions. My bird bites my dad all the time, and he hasn’t done a single thing to her besides give her treats in the morning. She fluffs her feathers (in an attack sort of way) and one time even flew at him and attacked his ear. Any tips?
Matthew - yes! If he would let me I would. Unfortunately he has gotten toweled at the vet so he is very suspicious of towels, but would be a good thing to train.
Your Conure could be a little stressed maybe. Mine likes to bathe more when he has been through a stressful situation, but some Conures just like to bathe daily. Conures love water. Your Conure may be take many baths a day because he/she would like to get more fully wet/clean than it’s little water bowl allows maybe try providing your Conure a wider dish with 1-2 inches of water in it to bathe in on the top of its cage or the bottom of its cage or someplace your bird feels safe. He/she may be able to bathe more fully with this set up and not need to bathe multiple times a day.
I tried the dish and spray method on my Amazon and she hates them both (though I still spray her because she needs a bath) maybe I'll try the shower methods next and maybe I'll try the dish again because she has started using her water bowl as a bath.
Schmaltzii Cue - Yeah, you don’t have to rush. Birds eventually show interest in bathing when you least expect it. They may climb into the sink when you are washing dishes, join your in the shower or hop in your water glass when you are drinking if they are small. Bathing is a very vulnerable time for birds because their attention is divided and their feathers get waterlogged. This makes them easier prey as it is harder for them to fly with wet feathers. The most important thing is that they feel safe. And birds have all kinds of reasons they don’t feel 100% safe that may feel strange to us. (Time of day, window near by, certain person in the room, rush of the water etc.) the important thing is you don’t rush or force him. This will make him scared of the idea all together. You can always leave a shallow bowl on his stand or in his cage and he may decide to take a bath when he feels most safe.
Hi :-) . . . Could you give me some advice or suggestions as to why my Bird I have had for about 2+ months now won't eat Pellets and only eats the fatty Seeds in mix for her. So I have my own concoctive eays to get her to eat them but as yet she is Determined to have the amount of Favoured seed 3 x Daily (or more) and that worries me Long term ! She is 15months old and I feel has only been give Some Fresh Produce and maybe mostly SEEDS !?!!!!! Thank You xo
BE THE TRUTH - okay! Here is my answer! Ah yes, Marco came to me with the same problem. I struggled with this too for quite some time and I am still making adjustments. I’ve got him eating Zupreem fruit blend pellets and fresh veggies, fruit and grains primarily. In terms of seeds he is currently down to 2 Nutriberries plus some sunflower seeds for training each day. Before you start to change your birds diet, be sure you get a digital kitchen scale that measures grams reliably. It is dangerous for birds to lose weight quickly so you want to keep track of your birds weight during this process. Just like humans, it is best to weigh your bird at the same time. In the morning. After their “morning mega poop” would be ideal. Once you have an established weight you can start to alter their food in small increments. Replace one additional teaspoon of their seed with pellets every week until all the seed in their bowl is replaced with pellets. This should take at least a month and can be done in smaller increments and/or over a longer period of time. Continue to weigh your bird regularly to make sure they are not losing weight as you transition them. This is the classic method to transition birds from seed to pellet. I have done this somewhat with Marco. Pro Tip: if your bird likes fruits, grains, and/or veggies then be sure to provide these everyday along with your seed/pellet mixture to give nutritional options for your bird as he transitions. Another idea is: Marco first showed interest in the pellets when I was bird sitting some parakeets who were already eating pellets. Marco wasn’t sure what to make of the parakeets, but he sure was interested in what they were eating. “Food Envy” is another method people use to get their birds to eat pellets. If you don’t have other birds, you can use yourself as an example. Some birds react positively their owners pretending to eat pellets and making a big fuss about them; Clicking and carrying on. Some owners will actually try to “keep the pellets for themselves and not share with the bird” to make the pellets seem extra desirable. This trick has also worked on occasion with Marco, but I have not had the patients to keep up with it long enough to make it a habit. I have also heard of people mixing pellets with juice to make a sweet, soft mixture that some birds love to get them used to the taste, then slowly switch out to hard pellets. I have yet to try this. The method that actually worked best for Marco was to switch the position of his foods. I moved the pellets to the top of his stand where is seeds used to be and put the seeds down lower at the base of the stand. You could do this same concept inside of a cage as well. It was a bit of classic bird psychology. Birds love to be in “on high” and feel more safe eating in high places where they can scan their environment for predators and competition. Putting the pellets in Marco’s favorite high spot was just the push he needed to make the switch. Once he started eating them regularly, I noticed that he must have found nutrients he needed in the pellets that he wasn’t getting in the seed because he would eat his seed for a while, then elect to stop eating the seeds in favor of the pellets. Amazing! Give it a try. One other thing I should mention is that Zupreem fruit blend is not the most nutritious for your bird as it has a high amount of sugar and other processed foods. It is far better to go with Harrison’s or Roudybush pellets if you can convince your bird to eat them, however I believe it is overall easier to convince your bird to eat the fruit pellets due to the sugar, fun color and shapes. So it may just come down to what your bird will actually agree to eat. I think it is best to check with your avian vet, what is best for your bird if possible. Personally, I am hopeful to slowly transition Marco from Zupreem fruit blend to Harrison’s High Potency, but I I have to steal myself for another long battle using all the tricks above. Sigh..... I'm so glad I found your site. Marco is so sweet! I am a fairly new bird owner. I rescued my Green Cheek, Milton, 8 months ago. Milton is 3 years old and is very sweet, except to my husband. This Spring, now Summer my birds have been extremely hormonal! This week I set up a birdroom for Milton and my 2 parakeets. I'm working on a better sleep schedule. Milton creates nests wherever he can find a small dark space. I've blocked off under all the furniture. Have you any advice that might help calm hormones? How does Marco act when he is hormonal? My bird also does the morning poopy thing with me. I put a garbage can under where he poops and made a game out of it. Now he consistantly poops in the garbage in the morning and I've seen him use it on his own every now and then I'm beginning to understand what he's saying too. He came to me saying one thing clearly." "No Biting" and he will bite my husband aggressively. Hopefully working pon his hormones might help with this.
meg's utube - your post had us laughing because so much reminds us of our experience with our own, Marco. 😂 We adopted him at age 4 and he will be 8 in a month. He also came preprogrammed with a few choice phrases and has learned more since coming to live with me. Marco also hated my boyfriend (Ian) for the first 3 years Marco lived with me. Things changed when Ian moved in with me and we made a few changes to increase trust. Now my bird LOVES Ian and may actually prefer him at times this is what we did: 1) we watched for the triggers of bites. For marco it was when Ian tried to have him step up on his hand, when Ian allowed him to sit on his shoulder or Ian was alone with Marco. 2) We made rules that Ian was not to use his hands with Marco and Marco was not allowed on Ian’s shoulder or to spend time alone with Ian. This actually helped build trust with Marco a lot. 3) We then put Ian in charge of trick training, which Marco loves. First trick we trained was for Marco to step up on a stick for Ian so he can move him around as needed, but Ian ended up teaching Marco all kinds of tricks. This further improved their trust and relationship. After that Marco started snuggling against Ian’s arms and started letting him scritch his head. Then I was able to leave them alone together for increasing amounts of time because Ian had figured out how to manage Marco in most scenarios. Their relationship solidified during Covid isolation when Ian was working from home everyday and a continuous companion to Marco while I went to work at the hospital. The main concept was to demonstrate to Marco that Ian could be trusted because he would not do the things that made Marco fearful and bite then show Marco that Ian was a pretty great guy by having Ian do some of Marcos favorite things with Ian and finally having Marco rely on Ian for some of his socialization when I wasn’t home. This process was slow and took about a year. I know that sounds like a long time, but we had encouraging improvements throughout. It does take a commitment from your husband however, so it’s up to him how important it is to him. Though they are great friends and spend a lot of time together, We are still working on Marco stepping up on Ian’s hand (without violence). Marco came with a particular fear of hands so it is understandable that this is our last challenge. We are at about 75% non violent success rate. That is with Ian always respecting when Marco says no to a step up in non-violent ways. We definitely want to make a video about how we did this because I know a lot of people struggle with it and we were really desperate to figure it out for a long time. Thanks for your comment. As stated in the video, each Conure seems to have a different preference. Mine refuses to bathe earlier than 4 days. Some like it every day. Seeds are like candy bars to birds lots of fat and unhealthy stuff without a lot of nutritional value. We only use seeds for rewards during trick training. You will need to feed your bird a nutritionally formulated bird pellet as well as fresh veggies, grains, legumes and fruits. Thanks for watching!
So cute! Mine likes baths about every day. She always lets me know by pacing and pointing her head towards the sink while she makes little screeches. Lol She puts her whole head in the light stream and rubs her belly into the water. She prefers the bathroom sink, but she also showers with me too from the shower rod. She’s only a few months old so we are still figure out other ways she might take a bath. She always wants me to rub the top of her head and the edges of her beak. I love my baby girl.
mine both love baths everyday i leave out a large stainless steel dog bowl water,my male will even do run and jump in and out of water,my female expects and demands fresh bath water everyday.
How long have you had them? I had a parakeet growing up and she didn’t really bathe much, every once and a while she would climb down my arm when I was washing my hands in the sink or even bathe in my water glass, but it definitely had to be on her terms. I think she also appreciated a spray from a warm water bottle too. You could try that and see if the respond positively to that.
When my conure wants to bathe, she will dive into the water before you ever get the chance to regulate the temp. Screaming hot or icy cold, she doesnt care. So with one hand youre trying to keep her out while trying to get the water right.
You are right about the ferimones. If you feel fear while around bees, that releases ferimones that the bees translate and attack. So fear definitely has a smell.
Marco is adorable! I was thinking of getting a green cheeked conure when I’m a little older and know more about them and how to take care of them so it’s nice to know this information 😁

help!! i’ve had my male green cheek named coco for about a year now. he’s really bonded with my partner and i, as i started dating him around the same time i got coco. so he bonded to both of us and tries to attack any other person that comes too close to him (not us) but ever since he’s been like 5 months old he started to bite, A LOT. like he wants to be with us 24/7 and he’ll hop back and forth between us taking turns getting love... but he bites my lips a lot, and my ears. i’ll be rubbing him and he’ll be all fluffy and happy and then boom he latches on to our fingers. and he loves to bite in between my fingers when i rub him. i get him out for hours a day so he’s a happy birb. i keep his cage clean and give him lots of healthy food so nothing should be wrong with him. he only lets us rub his head, and his back also. he won’t let us touch his feet, wings, or belly without screeching and attacking... ive tried everything! i’ll never get rid of him i love him to death but i want to figure this out before he sticks with it his whole life... he’s been like this for 7 months now probably. i was thinking it had something to do with his hormones but he continues to do it! we’ve stopped saying “ouch!” when he bites, we give a firm “no!” and he stops for a minute, then he just starts nibbling on us again! he’s only drawn blood once on me which was about 6 months ago i was sitting on my floor and out of no where he flew over to me and latched onto the top of my hand without me even touching him :( he hasn’t done that since. i’ve tried setting him away from me when he bites so he knows it’s not okay, ive taken him to his cage after a hard bite too and nothing seems to work.... suggestions please❤️❤️
mady liptak - If you are petting him on the back it is likely still hormonal. As it sounds like you know, birds can get very frustrated and aggressive when you sexually stimulate them by petting them on the back. A back rub to them is like a crotch rub in human terms. Might help to think of it that way. A bird should be scritched in the head only. All else is highly sexual. There also may be other things you are inadvertently doing to increase and maintain hormones in your bird. Check out my video on Green Cheek Conure Mating behaviors and what to do about them on my channel: th-cam.com/video/m53dyRBXvj8/w-d-xo.html Also If he is 1 year old then this is a highly hormonal time for him; like being in your teens for humans. Birds go though a bluffing period around this age as well, where they are going through their rebellious years and can get much more aggressive for this reason too. Research bluffing and you should find more information about what that looks like and what to do about it. But don’t worry It will eventually calm down as their hormones settle as long as you haven’t encouraged negative behaviors and have continued to develop your bond with your bird. My bird has also bitten me if I happen to rub a pin feather on his head that is painful. So be sure you are being gentle and mindful of those pin feathers. My bird sometimes bites the webbing of my hands when he wants to wrestle. He loves to be flipped on his back and to have a play fight match with my hand and his feet and beak. Green Cheeks love to wrestle hard so you will have to train him not to bite too hard by discontinuing the play for 10 seconds each time he nips harder than you would like. The same goes for the head scritches. If you are petting him in the head (head only) and he nips you, withdraw your hand and count slowly to 10 then return to scritches if he would like them. He will learn pretty quick from this negative reinforcement. Try these things and keep researching. It takes time for you and your bird to figure each other out especially when teenaged hormones are introduced. Marco is 7 and I am still learning and we are still figuring out how to communicate better. So it’s never to late! I love your commitment to your bird. That’s what it takes. mady liptak - Glad the info is helpful. Don’t know if this helps, but when my guy gets fluffy and angry and starts to charge at me. I actually firmly tell him “No, Stop. Wait.” Then change my tone and say to a gentle tone and say “Good bird, you’re a good bird.” And it totally stops him in his tracks and deescalates the situation. He then fluffs off the stress and repeats, “Good bird.” Back to me and it’s over. It’s like he thinks we are fighting about something (I guess I have u knowingly provoked or I insulted him) then I remind him that things are good between us and that he is good by saying “Good bird” it totally reassures him and he is back to his loving self. It is very counter intuitive because you feel like you don’t want to reinforce negative behavior with praise, but as you have seen punishment does nothing at best and escalated the situation at worst. I wouldn’t give him a treat for aggressive behavior, as this may train him to be aggressive, but reminding my bird of his goodness seems to help. Perhaps it’s a shift in my energy that he can read, but whatever it is it worked with my little guy. You could try that next time he goes nuts and lunges at you. I would be interested to hear if that works for other people too.

Blu Sky - Agreed. My bird seems to need the sound of running water to get in the mood. And on day 4 or 5 if he does not get in the mood and doesn’t have a bath, he starts getting really stressed and freaks out. However, Since the filming of this video I have modified his bath to be more eco-friendly. I get him going with the rushing water, but then turn it down once he’s committed to it. There needs to be some water running to replace the water her splashes out, however I plan to look for a used low wide dish to mitigate some of this issue. Ecologically it is nothing compared to our own daily showers or bathes. Personally I turn off the shower when soaping up to limit my own water waste. my bird literally hates baths, we tried the bathtub, the sink, shower stepping in with her but she's always terrified and flies away and we have to make her go in she gets very upset.
Ramisha Alam - it is not so important for your bird to have a bath that you must force him/her. Often times they are fearful of being lowered into a basin or feel overwhelmed by the heat or spray of a shower. You cannot force them to have a bath or they will become fearful of the whole experience and possibly if you. I think all conures enjoy bathing if given the right set up and allowed the opportunity to choose a time and place that feels safe for them. Have you tried my method of elevating a shallow bowl over the sink on a dish drying wrack? I often have to run the water for 5 minutes (washing dishes or otherwise) to get my bird in the bathing mood. I can not force him before he is ready and climbs down my arm to enjoy his bath. Sometimes we have to reapproach on another day if he isn’t up for it yet. Birds feel very vulnerable when bathing as this is a time when it is difficult to watch for danger and escape from predators when their feathers are heavy and water logged. So clearing the bathing environment from anything your bird may feel is threatening is important. Threats include widows, startling noises and movements and anything else your bird has previously shown fear of. Sometimes moving the bowl over fish drying wrack the the bathroom helps because it is a smaller space, quieter, enclosed space that your bird will find less threatening. You can also see if your bird enjoys a spray from a spray bottle and if nothing else allow your bird to sit on top of the shower curtain rod or door while you have a shower or a bath so he/she can enjoy the mist. This will provide some of the benefits of bathing without making your bird fearful. The most important point here is to never force your bird to do anything unless it comes down to your birds safety. You have to find a way to entice your bird to do the things you want him/her to do with treats, and praise and pets with the design to ultimately make these activities intrinsically motivating for the bird. I have tried a lot of different training tactics with my bird and discovered that dominating and forcing my bird to do anything ends in unhappiness for both of us. He gets scared and angry I get bitten, I get frustrated and our relationship is damaged. Birds love treats, socialization, and affection use this to your advantage to get them to do the things they need to do to be healthy and happy as the pathway to these benefits are not always clear to your bird. Check out articles and videos on target training as a way to move you and your bird in a positive direction. It is amazing and totally changed my relationship with my bird for the better. @@GuidetoGreenCheekConures thank u and yes we tried all of those things, occasionally he takes his own baths in his water dish but its too small for him to completly bathe we provided a shallow dish but he would not step in, shes super obedient and nice but when it comes to bath we still havent figured it out
Sharon Ross - They are more forgiving in terms of plucking and behaviors than larger birds, like Amazon’s, macaws, and cockatoos and they are generally quieter, but certainly can make a nice obnoxious scream when they want to be with you and you are ignoring them. One of the main descriptors if green cheeks is that they are a lot of personality packed into a small package. I find this to be true they are very intelligent and social. they know what they want and will do what it takes to make that clear to you. Luckily most of what they want is to be with you all the time and they will make that very clear. These are birds who need to be with you all the time when you are home and need you to come home in order to be with them. Some people with budgies feel they can leave them in the cage and only take them out when they feel like it. I argue that this is not the case and cruel, but certainly green cheeks would never stand for this kind of treatment. They need hours of time out of the cage hanging with you, snuggling and doing trick training. They are a quick study and will do anything for a sunflower seed. These birds also live 30 years so are quite a commitment. And they cannot be left alone when you leave on vacation. It is best to find someone who is willing to bring them into their home and hang out with them daily as you do, worst case scenario you need to board them, but my experience is that is quite traumatic. My bird would not stop clinging to me when I picked him up after boarding. He was clearly traumatized. He has been much more well adjusted when I have picked him up from another persons house who has spent time with him out of the cage every day. They can also become 1 person birds so sometimes having someone else care for your bird gets difficult, though it has worked out okay with my guy. They can also be jealous. My bird used to hate my boyfriend and dive bomb him and bite him. 3 years and many interventions later he seems to be content with a frenemies status; mostly okay to have him in his presence and even preferring to ride around on his shoulder, but occasionally, unexpectedly hauling off and giving him a bloody bite on the neck without apparent warning. So they cannot be left alone together and the boyfriends shoulder is now off limits. Sigh. They are also, as you can probably see, great companions if you are willing to put up with all the above, but I have to say they are a lot of work and a huge commitment. Think dog or more. Martaeq Grillo - I am assuming you mean what age? I think as soon as they can walk and eat and fly on their own it’s perfectly fine. Just make sure the bowl is shallow and your bird has a way to step out of the water if fearful or uncomfortable. Monitor the water for safe temperature and depth. Birds naturally love to bathe and it is good for their physical and mental wellbeing. So I say scrub a dub dub, bathe away!
Rani Khanam - he has his own bird room that he hangs out in and watches bird videos and real birds at the feeder outside while I am at work for 8 hours a day/ 5 days a week. So he is never caged. He is with us doing whatever we are doing and making his own demands on top of that when we are home from work. He’s alone 7-8 hours a day, and can make us feel pretty awful about it. Birds need 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night, so if you are gone for 12 hours during the day then he will be sleeping the other 12 hours. To be completely honest with you, if you are gone working 12 hours a day 5 days a week then I think a green cheek is not for you. (And I am sorry you are having to work that much) They are extremely social and clingy. You will feel awful leaving your bird that long, your bird will suffer being alone for that long and your bird will make it clear it is distressed by you leaving. If you work from home or work 3 - 12 hour shifts a week instead of 5 or have family members who lives with you and will spend time with the bird then those scenarios that could work, but the bird may favor the family member who is able to spend more time with it. Also remember whatever plan you come up with has to work for the 30 year span of the birds life too. Not having the time a bird needs is the number one reason I have seen people using when putting their bird up for adoption on Craigslist. Please consider your situation and make sure you are confident that you will not be putting your bird up for adoption for the same reason in the future.
My cockatiel hates water so much. He will do something and like it one time and then I’ll try it again and he hates it. Like he took a bath in a plate once (I was desperate to get him to try anything) and he loved it.. one time. He hates it now. He hates the spray bottle, shower, sink, and everything else I’ve tried 🙁
I had a cockatiel growing up and she was not super into bathing. I think she would go a good 3 or more months between baths. Every once and a while she would just climb down my arm when I was washing my hands in the sink and had a bath with the water running on low and the drain open. Birds really won’t allow you to pressure them into anything. They just get fearful and create a phobia if you do. I say don’t worry to much about it and let your cockatiel guide you. He will let you know when it’s time. And it may be months between baths for that one.

I have toned it down a bit since the filming of this video. I also discovered he likes the water even warmer! Not hot, but pretty warm. I also got him a wider shallow dish that he loves to scoot across like a little feather boat. 😂
Okay so I just seen this video now and I want to know if it's okay for him to use a heat lamp, since we have a fire belly toads they live in a like warm environment, so we use a heat lamp and he likes to sit under the heat lamp.
La Blue Eyes - I think that’s fine as long as he can’t touch it and burn himself on it and he has an option to move out of its glare if it is too hot for him. Like place it over half of a perch so he can choose his own warmth Adventure.
I have 150g reef tank, I see you have a tank.. Does he ever get near tank? Another question, in a 24hr cycle, how much loud screaming actually occurs ... If placed in a cage and left for 3-4 hours alone at home, will there be much screaming ? I am trying to determine if i can have a GC in my townhome, walls are double insulated ? I saw one of these birds in a pet store today, It was adorable and was interacting with me threw the glass. They were asking $600 Canadian for this little darling. Marco is way cool, My wife and I have a female love bird that I got about a year ago when she was very young and I was still hand feeding her. I can tell you have a great relationship with Marco. have you had him since hand feeding? How old is he now?
Is it safe to bathe with my bird? I'm just wondering because sometimes I feel that soap will get on him or in his eyes and I still don't know if it's safe or not. Is it?
Joey Thomas - I gently introduced him to different forms of bathing. As you can see is is quite adept at showing that he does not like something. Ultimately, I got the idea for the bath he likes by watching videos on TH-cam of other parrots bathing. I think if you are gentle and sensitive to the cues he is providing you then you don’t have to be concerned about frightening your bird or scarring them for life. 🥰🦜
Good question, it is important to find a way to keep your bird warm as he dries, as it is not healthy for them to be cold for the 90 minutes or so it takes them to dry. As you probably saw in my video, I use an oil or infrared space heater in my room and allow him to dry ambiantly . You can use a bathroom with a heat lamp in the same way, but be warned it does take quite a long time. In the past my cockatiel and my budgie just LOVED being blow dried with a hairdryer on low. I think many conures like that, but Marco was not fond of this solution. Sigh. It could just take some training, but I haven’t had the bandwidth to take that one on yet. Other birds like rubbing themselves on towels or even allow themselves to be gently toweled off by their owners. If it’s a warm sunny day he may enjoy basking in a sunny window, but be sure you are watching him and that he has a shady spot he can take shelter so he does not overheat. Those are all the ways I know of to dry your bird. Good question! I should have included that in my video. Thanks for watching! 🦜💕
My green cheek likes to take a bath almost every day but my sun conure does it about 2 times a week but what's hilarious is when my sun conure gets ready he dunks his big body into the entire bowl and the water just gets displaced because of how big he is. After a couple of flaps he's Done.
my bird LOVES normal showers we don't have a stand for him (because we cant find one anywhere) but it is good that it is good for his feathers because get grets grumpy when he is growing new ones
Emily Su - Good question! we have put “You go poopie” on cue so we place him on his stand or on our finger over the toilet and point at him and say, “you go poopie” and he goes within a minute of our coaxing. We taught him this by taking him to his stand and when it was apparent he has to go. (Signs are, dropping and wagging tail, walking backwards and slightly lifting wings.) We cued him until he pooped then rewarded him handsomely with his favorite treats. First thing in the morning is a great time to start this training. Conures always have the dreaded morning poop which they save all night and is about the size of their head! When your bird wakes up, he will want to poop immediately. Take him to where you want him to poop, give him a consistent verbal and physical cue before and during his poop then reward him with praise his favorite treat as soon has he poops. Do this every morning and every time you know he is about to poop. Putting “you go poop” on cue as I described is actually pretty easy. It’s catching every time that he needs to go poop that is difficult. Conures need to poop approximately every 15 minutes. Which means you have to train yourself to take him to his stand or the toilet every 15 minutes or mistakes will happen. We mitigate this partially by having him on his stand a lot and just bringing it with us so when he has to go he goes and rewarding him when he does. Other things you can do is train him to fly to his stand when he has to poop, but your bird has to remain motivated to do so which may be challenging. Another person I saw had trained their bird to tell them when he had to go to the bathroom with a specific chirp. So each time the bird made a certain noise the owner would put the bird on the stand and leave him there until he pooped then rewarded the bird when he went. We have not been successful in that, though I think it’s possible. That would be amazing! The only thing you can’t do is punish your bird for pooping in a place he shouldn’t. He will not understand. And you should know that even if you train your bird in these ways. He will make pretty regular mistakes, so the reality is that he will not be like a dog or a cat and leave the place spotless. He will poop on your shoulder, on your bed, on the couch and you just have to be ready to clean it up. Birds poop is an important part of their and our ecosystem. It helps spread and fertilize fruiting plant seeds which, in turn creates more food and habitat for birds so pooping all over the place is pretty ingrained in their natural behavior. The point is, if you don’t have a bird yet and you feel like the bird pooping in places he shouldn’t is a deal breaker then i highly advise you to not get a bird. You can somewhat mitigate this behavior with training, but you cannot stop it entirely and you WILL be cleaning up misfired poops on the regular. Hope this helps! @@emily-co2lj It's actually pretty safe for them. Just find a pretty natural one to be safe. You'll find a lot of recipes online to make treats for birds specifically that use peanut butter as a glue.
Hi, I recently bought a green cheek conure from someone that was planning on setting it free as they didn't want it anymore. He/she was never tame and was cage bound from birth. Would it be possible to tame it?
Shaune Frost - oh I am sorry to hear your Conure was so neglected. That is awful. He or she must be traumatized and will have a lot to work through in your care. Thank you so much for rescuing him/her. They would not have made it in the wild. But, yes, I think so with a lot of love, care and patience you can tame your bird over time. This bird may never be as tame as some of the birds you see on TH-cam who roll around on their back in their owners hands and such (though anything is possible) but I think you can build a bond with the bird and at least have it prefer your company, step up on your finger or perch; ride around on your shoulder and do some tricks for you and the like. Once bonded with you he/she may be willing to do much more. As for how, I say the way to a conures heart is through food. My Conure will literally do anything for a sunflower or safflower seed. You will have to go very slow - first just providing a treat in its cage and standing nearby. then feeding seeds from your hand through the bars, then with the cage door open and such. Moving toward feeding from your hand and “step up” training. This may take weeks or months, but would be so rewarding to give this little fella a new chance at a good life and a connection with you. This bird must be desperately lonely. As you probably know conures come from a flock and mate for life so their innate desire to connect and bond is very strong. I hope this works in your favor. When i first got Marco, I watched a lot of training videoed by “Manda and Rio” she has lots of great information about how to train your bird and all aspects of bird care. Be very patient, talk to the bird and tell him you really like him and offer toys, bits of food in your hand and just be there for him. Also, study up on parrots as there are many good books on how to parent a parrot to read and learn how to tame your little darling.
I take my bird in my hand, holding their feet with my fingers, and shower them like a baby, he/she allows me to open each wing on its turn to shower well. I can rarely get the bird to wash by him/herself unless is the water in the big cage where will often take a dip. Same sort of bird.
What a stinker! But that’s okay, let Birdie do Birdie. If that is how she feels comfortable bathing I say let her. Just clean out her water bowl each time.
They are quite easy to train to poop in a certain place when out of the cage, mine would actually sleep on my pillow by my head. Would hold her poop till I got up, I'd wake up, hold her over toilet and she would drop a big load of crap. Lol. I miss that bird so much. She got into a fight with a bigger conure and died in her sleep. Didn't see obvious wounds, but I guess she was hurt pretty bad.
Agreed. it is easy to train them to poop on command. The challenging thing is that they have to poop every 15-30 minutes and it is more difficult to train them to hold it during the day until a bathroom is available or to notify you that they need to go. And it’s quite disruptive to take them to the bathroom every 15 minutes. So It’s kind of hit or miss. If cleaning up poop on the regular is a deal breaker, I would not recommend making the 30 year commitment to a green cheek. It is hard to know how successful any individual will be in the toilet training arena.
MY conure loves having a bath with a bowl under running water and he also has had a shower with me once though he didn't want to the second time. He has baths basically every day. My dads conure had a bath twice yesterday. I have no idea why they want to bath so much but it's awesome watching them
Keep doing research on what it takes to care for these fun but complex little guys. Consider adopting rather than buying. There are so many out there in need of a good home. And send a link of a video of your bird if you end up getting one.
It's amazing how you got him to do those trick and take bath ,I have one too but my bird don't like to go on my hand he bite or if you touch his cage he take bath in kitchen sink he loves I just found you ty keep up vedios I'm going to watch and try these things with him .
Mine is 10 months old and wants to nibble on me all the time, I have to wear turtlenecks and long sleeves. If I have a small mole or freckle she bites it. Is this normal and how do I stop it if it is?

Eh, I wouldn’t worry about it. Let Birdie do birdie and just make sure he gets a fresh dish each time he has a bath. As long as he is getting a bath and enjoying it I don’t see a problem. If he needs more room to fully bathe you could consider putting a low wide bowl in the bottom of the cage for bathing. He may feel more safe in his cage. My guy is often fearful of bathing in large open spaces as he feels he is susceptible to predators in the open. Some birds may prefer a more enclosed space like a small bathroom. They also have cage attachments made for bathing. BUT if your bird is happy and this is working for him, I think what you have is totally fine. Thanks for watching!

Christy CoOl - to each their own. It’s okay if you would not do the same. I can see where you are coming from. Thanks for bringing it up. I actually wash the dish he bathes in in the dishwasher before and after he bathes. Also those dishes are set aside just for him. We do not eat from them. I guess it is possible to have some residual on the rack it’s self. I mostly use the dish rack for his baths since I have a dishwasher and little use for a drying rack. Personally, I am not concerned. If you are concerned, but want to use the same method you could wash the rack between baths as well or you could try some of the other methods i mention in the video. Marco used to bathe in his water dish with his previous owner, then got used to the method I showed in the video, so they are definitely able to try new things. They just need to feel very safe and secure when they try a new style of bathing because bathing is one of the most vulnerable times for a bird. Their feathers are water logged and they are not able to fly from danger easily.
How do you clean up bird droppings.... if i have to daily that's a turn off for me else I'd love to try a conure! I heard a substrate is bad idea only paper under the cage and to switch them daily....ughhh! Pls advice, i live in a small townhome....
Kris Ragu - To be honest, if you are worried about changing the cage daily, I recommend you do not adopt a bird of any variety . They are known mess makers. The droppings in the cage are the least of your concern. They will poop on you and all over your house and make big food messes every day. They need a variety of pellets and fresh fruits and veggies which they love to fling all over the place. Believe me when I say, You would constantly be cleaning up after a bird if you were to get one. This part of owning a bird is not glamorous and there is no real way around it. Birds are designed by nature to eat things with seeds in a messy manor in order to spread the seed then fertilize those seeds with their poop. Birds are an integral part of our ecosystem in this way, but when you remove them from their natural environment and put them in a clean home, their brilliant germination skills unfortunately just translate to a big mess. Additionally, They need to be out of the cage, with you for multiple hours every day; whenever you are home. They will have a very low quality of life and negatively affect the quality of your own life if you do not give them the attention they need. You have to be willing to accept this bird as a full fledged member of the family who does everything the family does. They also live for 30 years so it is a difficult relationship to “try” as you say. Thirty years is a huge commitment that lasts longer than the majority of marriages. I love my Conure, but these are some of the real challenges I deal with on the daily. And I know from experience that these challenges can be difficult to fully understand until you are in it. Sorry if this sounds harsh, I just want to deliver it to you straight, so you know what you are getting into and to avoid a future rehoming situation for another Green Cheek. I am glad you asked and are thinking about the things that would make owning a parrot difficult for you. I think you have a leg up on many parrot owners in this regard, because many folks don’t fully think it through before purchasing a parrot. I very much appreciate that my husband already had experience with birds before we agreed to adopt Chicken from a friend whose deteriorating health kept him from being able to keep Chicken's quality of life up. My husband took care of the feeding, cleaning, and socializing during my adjustment period, but we're now Forever Friends.

Not yet (1 year). I guess things are quite hectic for them, still. But they're moving to a nearby island, where my parents-in-law also live. So I'm optimistic that it'll happen.
My best friend thinks she'd like one; but she has a rather full, stressful life, so I think the best scenario is for her to bird-sit from time to time, even if we're not out of town. I think Chicken should live with her for a month or two (as it took around that long for Chicken and me to bond), then shorter stays whenever mutually agreeable. For now, I take Chicken with me when I go to spend a few hours with my friend.

@@ranikhanam572 It's not really dangerous if it only gets on the outside of the bird's body and it's soon rinsed off.. In extreme cases you can dry out the birds feathers and skin causing irritation. Remember that vets still to this day use concentrated dishwashing soap to clean birds, cats and other animals which have gotten soaked in oil. I had a cat that fell into a barrel of motor oil. Completely doused in oil except for the cats head. She's a Siamese cat too so it was shocking to see her all black. Anyways I took her to the vet and they used Dawn dish soap. They then told me to wash her every day, once a day with Dawn until it's gone.
With that said, the biggest thing to consider would be him ingesting the soapy water which can cause some really bad side effects and possibly kill the bird if it intakes enough. If you've ever accidentally ate concentrated soap but it's not fun to say the least.
But it sounds like OP's bird jumped in and they immediately got the bird out. At least I hope this is the case.
@@ranikhanam572 mine do the same! I have two conures and as soon as they hear me doing dishes, they flock to me and crawl up and down my arms while I'm washing up and try to get under the faucet. Makes doing dishes even more laborious but it's too cute to shoo them away

Keep saving! I just spent $400 at the vet today for my green cheek annual check up. Usually it is only $300, but still I pay much more than the $450 I paid to adopt him every year for his care. I did the math once and figured out you will likely spend $30,000 on your green cheek over his lifespan if he lives to his natural old age of 30 years.
That covers his initial cost plus food, toys, annual vet visit, and boarding, this does not include likely additional costs like if your bird gets sick or hurt or you want to buy him a new cage or some more expensive toys or foods or participate in bird training seminars or something.
Long story short, get ready to enjoy your little buddy, they really are great, but also get ready to PAY for the privilege of being his parront 🤑
BooBoo likes cold, not warm bathes. About every 3-4 days, or into her water bowl, only after I clean it and fill with fresh water. Her first bath was two days after becoming my forever friend. She jumped into her water dish. Thank you for the video of Marco.

Marco Leapt onto a bath soon after coming to live with me. I think it was to wash off the stress of the transition.

Hahaha! He has changed his method a few times over the years. His current preference is bathing from a glass in our kitchen. Whatever floats his boat. And yes, Marco is very particular about how he is groomed.

Connie teh birb - Ah yes! I didn’t include this option. Apparently, Marco used to do this too before he was in my care. If your bird prefers this, then I think it is a fine way to go as long as he/she gets fresh water after her bath (no one wants to drink dirty bath water)😋
One possible reason for providing some of these alternatives would be, if the birds water bowl is not big enough for the bird to get fully wet and feel fully clean. My personal reason for offering the sink bath is because I find that after about 4 days Marco starts to get stressed if he hasn’t had a bath. I can tell because his behavior changes: he makes these incessant plaintive noises, is easily frightened, is grouchy, and nothing seems right in his world. Once he has a good full bath all of these behaviors disappear for another 3-4 days until it’s time to have a bath again. I offer the sink alternative because he is open to this option long before he would resort to bathing in his water dish. BUT if your bird is happy to problem solve their bathing needs in their water dish when the need strikes them, I don’t see anything wrong with this.

Hi my green cheek conure is not making noise as usual toady ?is it normal or is not well?
FANTASY CRICKET SARKAR - it’s hard to know. I would say, go with your gut here. If your bird is acting differently than he usually does, it would be a good idea to have your bird checked by a vet. Birds are so good at hiding illness that by the time you notice something is wrong they are often very sick and can decline rapidly.
A few months back, I noticed my bird was acting a bit different. I couldn’t put my finger on how he was acting differently, but my instincts were telling me something was off. He eventually started to get more snuggly and sleepy than usual and even slept with his beak tucked into his wing in front of me - something I have never seen him do. I took him to the vet and they ran some tests. Turns out my water system had been infected with E-coli (a serious stomach bacteria) and my bird had caught it. Once the issue was identified, it was easy to give him a course of antibiotics twice a day for two weeks mixing it with a little sweet yogurt.
Today, he is healthy and happy again, but I am so glad I listened to my gut and took him in to the vet.
I think you will be too. If nothing else, it will give you peace of mind to know he is well and you can look at what other environmental factors may be contributing to your birds increased silence.

My conure LOVES his bath time. I put him in the sink, run the water until the slightly warm water is up to his body. Basically his feet and legs are submerged. He bathes as I get his food ready on the counter beside the sink. He also likes for the water to continue running on low pressure so he can get the top of his head wet. Also so he can drink the fresh water.
I'd like to suggest doing a video on alternatives to the wood pellets / chips (or whatever it's called) you put at the bottom of the bird cage. That stuff is so expensive for what is essentially scrap wood and saw dust pressed into small cylinders.

That’s a good idea for a video. I will write it down.
I personally use paper towels which can be composted or a pillow case which can be washed and reused. I have also saved up old seed shells and pellet food until it covered the bottom and used that.
Other people use old newspapers, magazines, mail and scrap paper.
This would be best with a cage that has a grating over the tray because I think it’s not healthy for the bird to eat the ink print.
As for the paper pellets and wood shavings, there is nothing special about them that makes them better than the choices outlined above, as far as I know. Just another way to get you to spend money in the pet industry.

Mine refuses to get in the shower, but will cheerfully walk along the curtain rod, I tried the sink bit a few times, its always a big no, I generally use the shallow bowl bit more. Then the big dummy will bathe in his drinking water dish instead.

My bird is scared of everything. She won't get close to running water and will fly away. She hates me getting pinfeathers and will bite me and make me bleed every single time I get close to get one. I've had her for 8 or so years, and got her when she was a couple months old. I think she trusts me, but seems to be scared of just about anything, any tips?
Wow, she does sound fearful. Sounds like maybe you could eliminate things in her environment that scare her. If she is in a noisy or high traffic area in your home you could try giving her a quieter room to feel safe and take a rest in. Be sure she has a stand close to a wall in a more enclosed area so that she does not have to keep looking over her shoulder for danger. Cover at least 50% of her cage so that she can see out the front but can take refuge and feel safe in the back. Consider where you spend time with her if it is a large open space with many windows she may feel fearful of an aerial attack from a hawk. I know this is not a rational fear, but it’s programmed into her genetics.
Green cheek conures are hollow nesters so if you imagine a tree hollow that you might see an owl nesting in, this is their ideal space where they Can peak out and watch the world or hide deep in the tree hole for safety when needed. This is to give you an understanding of their psychology of what makes them feel safe and at home - a safe enclosed area that they can watch the world from. Try to make sure she has some places that provide her with this feeling.
In terms of your relationship, you can build trust by listening very carefully to what she is trying to tell you. Bird experts say that if your bird bites you it means you have ignored the many non-violent ways they have tried to tell you “No” before they finally had to haul off and bite you as a last resort. If you haven’t already, See if you can notice all the ways she tells you “No” before biting and be sure to listen to her when she says “No” unless her safety is in danger. The trainers from BirdTricks recommend that you always ask your bird if she will do something and listen for her response. So instead of saying, “Step Up” they say to always ask “Will you step up?” This actually changes your behavior toward the bird and makes them more trusting of you and hopefully ensures that you listen for their response. If she doesn’t want to step up, then there are plenty of times that’s okay and you can just leave her. Trust her that she has her reasons. Of course there are times when you need her to step up or go in the cage. Still work towards a “yes” from her for these important behaviors through training. Will your bird go in the cage because you told her to? “No!” Will she go in for 3 sunflower seeds? “Now you might have a deal!” Every bird has their price. 😉 There is literally nothing my bird won’t do for a safflower or sunflower seed. I highly recommend target training paired with clicker training to to build trust and confidence with your bird. My bird used to hate my boyfriend and fly attacked him and bit him till he bled. It was not a good scene. For the last 3 months my boyfriend has been target training my bird every day for 15 minutes. This helped reset the relationship between them and build my birds trust in him. Now my bird requests to hang out with my boyfriend and train every day and they also can hang out together when I am not home. My boyfriend has trained my bird to come when he calls him and fly to certain perches in the house so they can hang out together. He never has to pick him up or have him on his shoulder when I am gone (we are still working on that) but he can totally get my bird to do what ever he needs to do through target training and rewarding.
An important, but unintended consequence of my boyfriends training has also been that my bird is much better at flying and more confident in his surroundings. If your bird’s wings are clipped I would recommend allowing them to grow out and to allow her to learn to fly. This will build her confidence and make her less fearful and consequently less aggressive.

My bird bites my dad all the time, and he hasn’t done a single thing to her besides give her treats in the morning. She fluffs her feathers (in an attack sort of way) and one time even flew at him and attacked his ear. Any tips?

Matthew - yes! If he would let me I would. Unfortunately he has gotten toweled at the vet so he is very suspicious of towels, but would be a good thing to train.

Your Conure could be a little stressed maybe. Mine likes to bathe more when he has been through a stressful situation, but some Conures just like to bathe daily. Conures love water. Your Conure may be take many baths a day because he/she would like to get more fully wet/clean than it’s little water bowl allows maybe try providing your Conure a wider dish with 1-2 inches of water in it to bathe in on the top of its cage or the bottom of its cage or someplace your bird feels safe. He/she may be able to bathe more fully with this set up and not need to bathe multiple times a day.
I tried the dish and spray method on my Amazon and she hates them both (though I still spray her because she needs a bath) maybe I'll try the shower methods next and maybe I'll try the dish again because she has started using her water bowl as a bath.
Schmaltzii Cue - Yeah, you don’t have to rush. Birds eventually show interest in bathing when you least expect it. They may climb into the sink when you are washing dishes, join your in the shower or hop in your water glass when you are drinking if they are small. Bathing is a very vulnerable time for birds because their attention is divided and their feathers get waterlogged. This makes them easier prey as it is harder for them to fly with wet feathers. The most important thing is that they feel safe. And birds have all kinds of reasons they don’t feel 100% safe that may feel strange to us. (Time of day, window near by, certain person in the room, rush of the water etc.) the important thing is you don’t rush or force him. This will make him scared of the idea all together. You can always leave a shallow bowl on his stand or in his cage and he may decide to take a bath when he feels most safe.
Hi :-) . . . Could you give me some advice or suggestions as to why my Bird I have had for about 2+ months now won't eat Pellets and only eats the fatty Seeds in mix for her. So I have my own concoctive eays to get her to eat them but as yet she is Determined to have the amount of Favoured seed 3 x Daily (or more) and that worries me Long term ! She is 15months old and I feel has only been give Some Fresh Produce and maybe mostly SEEDS !?!!!!!

BE THE TRUTH - okay! Here is my answer!
Ah yes, Marco came to me with the same problem. I struggled with this too for quite some time and I am still making adjustments. I’ve got him eating Zupreem fruit blend pellets and fresh veggies, fruit and grains primarily. In terms of seeds he is currently down to 2 Nutriberries plus some sunflower seeds for training each day.
Before you start to change your birds diet, be sure you get a digital kitchen scale that measures grams reliably. It is dangerous for birds to lose weight quickly so you want to keep track of your birds weight during this process. Just like humans, it is best to weigh your bird at the same time. In the morning. After their “morning mega poop” would be ideal. Once you have an established weight you can start to alter their food in small increments. Replace one additional teaspoon of their seed with pellets every week until all the seed in their bowl is replaced with pellets. This should take at least a month and can be done in smaller increments and/or over a longer period of time. Continue to weigh your bird regularly to make sure they are not losing weight as you transition them. This is the classic method to transition birds from seed to pellet. I have done this somewhat with Marco. Pro Tip: if your bird likes fruits, grains, and/or veggies then be sure to provide these everyday along with your seed/pellet mixture to give nutritional options for your bird as he transitions. Another idea is: Marco first showed interest in the pellets when I was bird sitting some parakeets who were already eating pellets. Marco wasn’t sure what to make of the parakeets, but he sure was interested in what they were eating. “Food Envy” is another method people use to get their birds to eat pellets. If you don’t have other birds, you can use yourself as an example. Some birds react positively their owners pretending to eat pellets and making a big fuss about them; Clicking and carrying on. Some owners will actually try to “keep the pellets for themselves and not share with the bird” to make the pellets seem extra desirable. This trick has also worked on occasion with Marco, but I have not had the patients to keep up with it long enough to make it a habit.
I have also heard of people mixing pellets with juice to make a sweet, soft mixture that some birds love to get them used to the taste, then slowly switch out to hard pellets. I have yet to try this.
The method that actually worked best for Marco was to switch the position of his foods. I moved the pellets to the top of his stand where is seeds used to be and put the seeds down lower at the base of the stand. You could do this same concept inside of a cage as well. It was a bit of classic bird psychology. Birds love to be in “on high” and feel more safe eating in high places where they can scan their environment for predators and competition. Putting the pellets in Marco’s favorite high spot was just the push he needed to make the switch. Once he started eating them regularly, I noticed that he must have found nutrients he needed in the pellets that he wasn’t getting in the seed because he would eat his seed for a while, then elect to stop eating the seeds in favor of the pellets. Amazing! Give it a try.
One other thing I should mention is that Zupreem fruit blend is not the most nutritious for your bird as it has a high amount of sugar and other processed foods. It is far better to go with Harrison’s or Roudybush pellets if you can convince your bird to eat them, however I believe it is overall easier to convince your bird to eat the fruit pellets due to the sugar, fun color and shapes. So it may just come down to what your bird will actually agree to eat. I think it is best to check with your avian vet, what is best for your bird if possible.
Personally, I am hopeful to slowly transition Marco from Zupreem fruit blend to Harrison’s High Potency, but I I have to steal myself for another long battle using all the tricks above. Sigh.....

Guide to Green Cheek Conures what did you use to edit the video?
I'm so glad I found your site. Marco is so sweet! I am a fairly new bird owner. I rescued my Green Cheek, Milton, 8 months ago. Milton is 3 years old and is very sweet, except to my husband. This Spring, now Summer my birds have been extremely hormonal! This week I set up a birdroom for Milton and my 2 parakeets. I'm working on a better sleep schedule. Milton creates nests wherever he can find a small dark space. I've blocked off under all the furniture. Have you any advice that might help calm hormones? How does Marco act when he is hormonal? My bird also does the morning poopy thing with me. I put a garbage can under where he poops and made a game out of it. Now he consistantly poops in the garbage in the morning and I've seen him use it on his own every now and then
I'm beginning to understand what he's saying too. He came to me saying one thing clearly." "No Biting" and he will bite my husband aggressively. Hopefully working pon his hormones might help with this.
meg's utube - your post had us laughing because so much reminds us of our experience with our own, Marco. 😂 We adopted him at age 4 and he will be 8 in a month. He also came preprogrammed with a few choice phrases and has learned more since coming to live with me. Marco also hated my boyfriend (Ian) for the first 3 years Marco lived with me. Things changed when Ian moved in with me and we made a few changes to increase trust. Now my bird LOVES Ian and may actually prefer him at times this is what we did:
1) we watched for the triggers of bites. For marco it was when Ian tried to have him step up on his hand, when Ian allowed him to sit on his shoulder or Ian was alone with Marco.
2) We made rules that Ian was not to use his hands with Marco and Marco was not allowed on Ian’s shoulder or to spend time alone with Ian. This actually helped build trust with Marco a lot.
3) We then put Ian in charge of trick training, which Marco loves. First trick we trained was for Marco to step up on a stick for Ian so he can move him around as needed, but Ian ended up teaching Marco all kinds of tricks. This further improved their trust and relationship.
After that Marco started snuggling against Ian’s arms and started letting him scritch his head. Then I was able to leave them alone together for increasing amounts of time because Ian had figured out how to manage Marco in most scenarios. Their relationship solidified during Covid isolation when Ian was working from home everyday and a continuous companion to Marco while I went to work at the hospital. The main concept was to demonstrate to Marco that Ian could be trusted because he would not do the things that made Marco fearful and bite then show Marco that Ian was a pretty great guy by having Ian do some of Marcos favorite things with Ian and finally having Marco rely on Ian for some of his socialization when I wasn’t home. This process was slow and took about a year. I know that sounds like a long time, but we had encouraging improvements throughout. It does take a commitment from your husband however, so it’s up to him how important it is to him. Though they are great friends and spend a lot of time together, We are still working on Marco stepping up on Ian’s hand (without violence). Marco came with a particular fear of hands so it is understandable that this is our last challenge. We are at about 75% non violent success rate. That is with Ian always respecting when Marco says no to a step up in non-violent ways. We definitely want to make a video about how we did this because I know a lot of people struggle with it and we were really desperate to figure it out for a long time. Thanks for your comment. Hello I have a questions about Green Cheek Conures and the first one is are conures seed eaters? And how much baths do they need?
As stated in the video, each Conure seems to have a different preference. Mine refuses to bathe earlier than 4 days. Some like it every day.
Seeds are like candy bars to birds lots of fat and unhealthy stuff without a lot of nutritional value. We only use seeds for rewards during trick training. You will need to feed your bird a nutritionally formulated bird pellet as well as fresh veggies, grains, legumes and fruits.

So cute! Mine likes baths about every day. She always lets me know by pacing and pointing her head towards the sink while she makes little screeches. Lol She puts her whole head in the light stream and rubs her belly into the water. She prefers the bathroom sink, but she also showers with me too from the shower rod. She’s only a few months old so we are still figure out other ways she might take a bath. She always wants me to rub the top of her head and the edges of her beak. I love my baby girl.
mine both love baths everyday i leave out a large stainless steel dog bowl water,my male will even do run and jump in and out of water,my female expects and demands fresh bath water everyday.
My little guy doesn't let me wash my dishes; he assumes the tap was turned on just so he could shower!

We can't get my daughters parakeets to bath at all! I wish they would. I wish I could find a small heated water fountain.
How long have you had them? I had a parakeet growing up and she didn’t really bathe much, every once and a while she would climb down my arm when I was washing my hands in the sink or even bathe in my water glass, but it definitely had to be on her terms.
I think she also appreciated a spray from a warm water bottle too. You could try that and see if the respond positively to that.
When my conure wants to bathe, she will dive into the water before you ever get the chance to regulate the temp. Screaming hot or icy cold, she doesnt care. So with one hand youre trying to keep her out while trying to get the water right.

You are right about the ferimones. If you feel fear while around bees, that releases ferimones that the bees translate and attack. So fear definitely has a smell.

So it a big commitment. And just like a marriage there are a lot of great things that come with a green Cheek and a lot of annoying things you just have to figure out how to live with. 😋

help!! i’ve had my male green cheek named coco for about a year now. he’s really bonded with my partner and i, as i started dating him around the same time i got coco. so he bonded to both of us and tries to attack any other person that comes too close to him (not us) but ever since he’s been like 5 months old he started to bite, A LOT. like he wants to be with us 24/7 and he’ll hop back and forth between us taking turns getting love... but he bites my lips a lot, and my ears. i’ll be rubbing him and he’ll be all fluffy and happy and then boom he latches on to our fingers. and he loves to bite in between my fingers when i rub him. i get him out for hours a day so he’s a happy birb. i keep his cage clean and give him lots of healthy food so nothing should be wrong with him. he only lets us rub his head, and his back also. he won’t let us touch his feet, wings, or belly without screeching and attacking... ive tried everything! i’ll never get rid of him i love him to death but i want to figure this out before he sticks with it his whole life... he’s been like this for 7 months now probably. i was thinking it had something to do with his hormones but he continues to do it! we’ve stopped saying “ouch!” when he bites, we give a firm “no!” and he stops for a minute, then he just starts nibbling on us again! he’s only drawn blood once on me which was about 6 months ago i was sitting on my floor and out of no where he flew over to me and latched onto the top of my hand without me even touching him :( he hasn’t done that since. i’ve tried setting him away from me when he bites so he knows it’s not okay, ive taken him to his cage after a hard bite too and nothing seems to work.... suggestions please❤️❤️
mady liptak - If you are petting him on the back it is likely still hormonal. As it sounds like you know, birds can get very frustrated and aggressive when you sexually stimulate them by petting them on the back. A back rub to them is like a crotch rub in human terms. Might help to think of it that way. A bird should be scritched in the head only. All else is highly sexual. There also may be other things you are inadvertently doing to increase and maintain hormones in your bird. Also If he is 1 year old then this is a highly hormonal time for him; like being in your teens for humans. Birds go though a bluffing period around this age as well, where they are going through their rebellious years and can get much more aggressive for this reason too. Research bluffing and you should find more information about what that looks like and what to do about it. But don’t worry It will eventually calm down as their hormones settle as long as you haven’t encouraged negative behaviors and have continued to develop your bond with your bird.
My bird has also bitten me if I happen to rub a pin feather on his head that is painful. So be sure you are being gentle and mindful of those pin feathers.
My bird sometimes bites the webbing of my hands when he wants to wrestle. He loves to be flipped on his back and to have a play fight match with my hand and his feet and beak. Green Cheeks love to wrestle hard so you will have to train him not to bite too hard by discontinuing the play for 10 seconds each time he nips harder than you would like. The same goes for the head scritches. If you are petting him in the head (head only) and he nips you, withdraw your hand and count slowly to 10 then return to scritches if he would like them. He will learn pretty quick from this negative reinforcement.
Try these things and keep researching. It takes time for you and your bird to figure each other out especially when teenaged hormones are introduced.

mady liptak - Glad the info is helpful. Don’t know if this helps, but when my guy gets fluffy and angry and starts to charge at me. I actually firmly tell him “No, Stop. Wait.” Then change my tone and say to a gentle tone and say “Good bird, you’re a good bird.” And it totally stops him in his tracks and deescalates the situation. He then fluffs off the stress and repeats, “Good bird.” Back to me and it’s over. It’s like he thinks we are fighting about something (I guess I have u knowingly provoked or I insulted him) then I remind him that things are good between us and that he is good by saying “Good bird” it totally reassures him and he is back to his loving self. It is very counter intuitive because you feel like you don’t want to reinforce negative behavior with praise, but as you have seen punishment does nothing at best and escalated the situation at worst. I wouldn’t give him a treat for aggressive behavior, as this may train him to be aggressive, but reminding my bird of his goodness seems to help. Perhaps it’s a shift in my energy that he can read, but whatever it is it worked with my little guy. You could try that next time he goes nuts and lunges at you. I would be interested to hear if that works for other people too.

Blu Sky - Agreed. My bird seems to need the sound of running water to get in the mood. And on day 4 or 5 if he does not get in the mood and doesn’t have a bath, he starts getting really stressed and freaks out.
However, Since the filming of this video I have modified his bath to be more eco-friendly. I get him going with the rushing water, but then turn it down once he’s committed to it. There needs to be some water running to replace the water her splashes out, however I plan to look for a used low wide dish to mitigate some of this issue.
Ecologically it is nothing compared to our own daily showers or bathes. Personally I turn off the shower when soaping up to limit my own water waste. Hope that can offset the occasional Birdie bath.

Jennifer Joy - Absolutely! Growing up I had a budgie that liked to climb down my arm into the sink to bathe when I washed my hands. ☺️
my bird literally hates baths, we tried the bathtub, the sink, shower stepping in with her but she's always terrified and flies away and we have to make her go in she gets very upset.
Ramisha Alam - it is not so important for your bird to have a bath that you must force him/her. Often times they are fearful of being lowered into a basin or feel overwhelmed by the heat or spray of a shower. You cannot force them to have a bath or they will become fearful of the whole experience and possibly if you. I think all conures enjoy bathing if given the right set up and allowed the opportunity to choose a time and place that feels safe for them.
Have you tried my method of elevating a shallow bowl over the sink on a dish drying wrack? I often have to run the water for 5 minutes (washing dishes or otherwise) to get my bird in the bathing mood. I can not force him before he is ready and climbs down my arm to enjoy his bath. Sometimes we have to reapproach on another day if he isn’t up for it yet.
Birds feel very vulnerable when bathing as this is a time when it is difficult to watch for danger and escape from predators when their feathers are heavy and water logged. So clearing the bathing environment from anything your bird may feel is threatening is important. Threats include widows, startling noises and movements and anything else your bird has previously shown fear of. Sometimes moving the bowl over fish drying wrack the the bathroom helps because it is a smaller space, quieter, enclosed space that your bird will find less threatening.
You can also see if your bird enjoys a spray from a spray bottle and if nothing else allow your bird to sit on top of the shower curtain rod or door while you have a shower or a bath so he/she can enjoy the mist. This will provide some of the benefits of bathing without making your bird fearful.
The most important point here is to never force your bird to do anything unless it comes down to your birds safety. You have to find a way to entice your bird to do the things you want him/her to do with treats, and praise and pets with the design to ultimately make these activities intrinsically motivating for the bird. I have tried a lot of different training tactics with my bird and discovered that dominating and forcing my bird to do anything ends in unhappiness for both of us. He gets scared and angry I get bitten, I get frustrated and our relationship is damaged. Birds love treats, socialization, and affection use this to your advantage to get them to do the things they need to do to be healthy and happy as the pathway to these benefits are not always clear to your bird. Check out articles and videos on target training as a way to move you and your bird in a positive direction. It is amazing and totally changed my relationship with my bird for the better.

Are they good for a new bird owner? I’ve had parakeets growing up but that’s it. I live in a condo. How noisy?
Sharon Ross - They are more forgiving in terms of plucking and behaviors than larger birds, like Amazon’s, macaws, and cockatoos and they are generally quieter, but certainly can make a nice obnoxious scream when they want to be with you and you are ignoring them. One of the main descriptors if green cheeks is that they are a lot of personality packed into a small package. I find this to be true they are very intelligent and social. they know what they want and will do what it takes to make that clear to you. Luckily most of what they want is to be with you all the time and they will make that very clear. These are birds who need to be with you all the time when you are home and need you to come home in order to be with them. Some people with budgies feel they can leave them in the cage and only take them out when they feel like it. I argue that this is not the case and cruel, but certainly green cheeks would never stand for this kind of treatment. They need hours of time out of the cage hanging with you, snuggling and doing trick training. They are a quick study and will do anything for a sunflower seed. These birds also live 30 years so are quite a commitment. And they cannot be left alone when you leave on vacation. It is best to find someone who is willing to bring them into their home and hang out with them daily as you do, worst case scenario you need to board them, but my experience is that is quite traumatic. My bird would not stop clinging to me when I picked him up after boarding. He was clearly traumatized. He has been much more well adjusted when I have picked him up from another persons house who has spent time with him out of the cage every day. They can also become 1 person birds so sometimes having someone else care for your bird gets difficult, though it has worked out okay with my guy. They can also be jealous. My bird used to hate my boyfriend and dive bomb him and bite him. 3 years and many interventions later he seems to be content with a frenemies status; mostly okay to have him in his presence and even preferring to ride around on his shoulder, but occasionally, unexpectedly hauling off and giving him a bloody bite on the neck without apparent warning. So they cannot be left alone together and the boyfriends shoulder is now off limits. Sigh.
They are also, as you can probably see, great companions if you are willing to put up with all the above, but I have to say they are a lot of work and a huge commitment. Think dog or more.

Martaeq Grillo - I am assuming you mean what age? I think as soon as they can walk and eat and fly on their own it’s perfectly fine. Just make sure the bowl is shallow and your bird has a way to step out of the water if fearful or uncomfortable. Monitor the water for safe temperature and depth. Birds naturally love to bathe and it is good for their physical and mental wellbeing.
So I say scrub a dub dub, bathe away!

How many hours a day is he out of hes cage playing socializing etc i work 12 hours a day.
Rani Khanam - he has his own bird room that he hangs out in and watches bird videos and real birds at the feeder outside while I am at work for 8 hours a day/ 5 days a week. So he is never caged. He is with us doing whatever we are doing and making his own demands on top of that when we are home from work. He’s alone 7-8 hours a day, and can make us feel pretty awful about it.
Birds need 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night, so if you are gone for 12 hours during the day then he will be sleeping the other 12 hours.
To be completely honest with you, if you are gone working 12 hours a day 5 days a week then I think a green cheek is not for you. (And I am sorry you are having to work that much) They are extremely social and clingy. You will feel awful leaving your bird that long, your bird will suffer being alone for that long and your bird will make it clear it is distressed by you leaving.
If you work from home or work 3 - 12 hour shifts a week instead of 5 or have family members who lives with you and will spend time with the bird then those scenarios that could work, but the bird may favor the family member who is able to spend more time with it. Also remember whatever plan you come up with has to work for the 30 year span of the birds life too.
Not having the time a bird needs is the number one reason I have seen people using when putting their bird up for adoption on Craigslist. Please consider your situation and make sure you are confident that you will not be putting your bird up for adoption for the same reason in the future.

My cockatiel hates water so much. He will do something and like it one time and then I’ll try it again and he hates it. Like he took a bath in a plate once (I was desperate to get him to try anything) and he loved it.. one time. He hates it now. He hates the spray bottle, shower, sink, and everything else I’ve tried 🙁
I had a cockatiel growing up and she was not super into bathing. I think she would go a good 3 or more months between baths. Every once and a while she would just climb down my arm when I was washing my hands in the sink and had a bath with the water running on low and the drain open. Birds really won’t allow you to pressure them into anything. They just get fearful and create a phobia if you do. I say don’t worry to much about it and let your cockatiel guide you. He will let you know when it’s time. And it may be months between baths for that one.

Alan I - You mean in the sink? He needs some water Flow to kind of get him in the bathing mood, but it doesn’t need to be as strong as it is in the video. I have toned it down a bit since the filming of this video. I also discovered he likes the water even warmer! Not hot, but pretty warm. I also got him a wider shallow dish that he loves to scoot across like a little feather boat. 😂

Okay so I just seen this video now and I want to know if it's okay for him to use a heat lamp, since we have a fire belly toads they live in a like warm environment, so we use a heat lamp and he likes to sit under the heat lamp.
La Blue Eyes - I think that’s fine as long as he can’t touch it and burn himself on it and he has an option to move out of its glare if it is too hot for him. Like place it over half of a perch so he can choose his own warmth Adventure.

I have 150g reef tank, I see you have a tank.. Does he ever get near tank? Another question, in a 24hr cycle, how much loud screaming actually occurs ... If placed in a cage and left for 3-4 hours alone at home, will there be much screaming ? I am trying to determine if i can have a GC in my townhome, walls are double insulated ? I saw one of these birds in a pet store today, It was adorable and was interacting with me threw the glass. They were asking $600 Canadian for this little darling. Marco is way cool, My wife and I have a female love bird that I got about a year ago when she was very young and I was still hand feeding her. I can tell you have a great relationship with Marco. have you had him since hand feeding? How old is he now?

Joey Thomas - I gently introduced him to different forms of bathing. As you can see is is quite adept at showing that he does not like something. Ultimately, I got the idea for the bath he likes by watching videos on TH-cam of other parrots bathing. I think if you are gentle and sensitive to the cues he is providing you then you don’t have to be concerned about frightening your bird or scarring them for life. 🥰🦜

What else do you do to dry them
Good question, it is important to find a way to keep your bird warm as he dries, as it is not healthy for them to be cold for the 90 minutes or so it takes them to dry. As you probably saw in my video, I use an oil or infrared space heater in my room and allow him to dry ambiantly . You can use a bathroom with a heat lamp in the same way, but be warned it does take quite a long time. In the past my cockatiel and my budgie just LOVED being blow dried with a hairdryer on low. I think many conures like that, but Marco was not fond of this solution. Sigh. It could just take some training, but I haven’t had the bandwidth to take that one on yet. Other birds like rubbing themselves on towels or even allow themselves to be gently toweled off by their owners. If it’s a warm sunny day he may enjoy basking in a sunny window, but be sure you are watching him and that he has a shady spot he can take shelter so he does not overheat. Those are all the ways I know of to dry your bird. Good question! I should have included that in my video.

My green cheek likes to take a bath almost every day but my sun conure does it about 2 times a week but what's hilarious is when my sun conure gets ready he dunks his big body into the entire bowl and the water just gets displaced because of how big he is. After a couple of flaps he's Done.
my bird LOVES normal showers we don't have a stand for him (because we cant find one anywhere) but it is good that it is good for his feathers because get grets grumpy when he is growing new ones

Emily Su - Good question! we have put “You go poopie” on cue so we place him on his stand or on our finger over the toilet and point at him and say, “you go poopie” and he goes within a minute of our coaxing. We taught him this by taking him to his stand and when it was apparent he has to go. (Signs are, dropping and wagging tail, walking backwards and slightly lifting wings.) We cued him until he pooped then rewarded him handsomely with his favorite treats. First thing in the morning is a great time to start this training. Conures always have the dreaded morning poop which they save all night and is about the size of their head! When your bird wakes up, he will want to poop immediately. Take him to where you want him to poop, give him a consistent verbal and physical cue before and during his poop then reward him with praise his favorite treat as soon has he poops. Do this every morning and every time you know he is about to poop.
Putting “you go poop” on cue as I described is actually pretty easy. It’s catching every time that he needs to go poop that is difficult. Conures need to poop approximately every 15 minutes. Which means you have to train yourself to take him to his stand or the toilet every 15 minutes or mistakes will happen. We mitigate this partially by having him on his stand a lot and just bringing it with us so when he has to go he goes and rewarding him when he does.
Other things you can do is train him to fly to his stand when he has to poop, but your bird has to remain motivated to do so which may be challenging. Another person I saw had trained their bird to tell them when he had to go to the bathroom with a specific chirp. So each time the bird made a certain noise the owner would put the bird on the stand and leave him there until he pooped then rewarded the bird when he went.
We have not been successful in that, though I think it’s possible. That would be amazing!
The only thing you can’t do is punish your bird for pooping in a place he shouldn’t. He will not understand.
And you should know that even if you train your bird in these ways. He will make pretty regular mistakes, so the reality is that he will not be like a dog or a cat and leave the place spotless. He will poop on your shoulder, on your bed, on the couch and you just have to be ready to clean it up.
Birds poop is an important part of their and our ecosystem. It helps spread and fertilize fruiting plant seeds which, in turn creates more food and habitat for birds so pooping all over the place is pretty ingrained in their natural behavior.
The point is, if you don’t have a bird yet and you feel like the bird pooping in places he shouldn’t is a deal breaker then i highly advise you to not get a bird. You can somewhat mitigate this behavior with training, but you cannot stop it entirely and you WILL be cleaning up misfired poops on the regular.

Guide to Green Cheek Conures thanks so much! my only main problem is that my bird does not seem to LOVE any type of food. there are some that she is excited too eat but there seems to be nothing that seems like a huge treat to her and will greatly motivate her.

@@emily-co2lj It's actually pretty safe for them. Just find a pretty natural one to be safe. You'll find a lot of recipes online to make treats for birds specifically that use peanut butter as a glue.
Hi, I recently bought a green cheek conure from someone that was planning on setting it free as they didn't want it anymore. He/she was never tame and was cage bound from birth.
Would it be possible to tame it?
Shaune Frost - oh I am sorry to hear your Conure was so neglected. That is awful. He or she must be traumatized and will have a lot to work through in your care. Thank you so much for rescuing him/her. They would not have made it in the wild. But, yes, I think so with a lot of love, care and patience you can tame your bird over time. This bird may never be as tame as some of the birds you see on TH-cam who roll around on their back in their owners hands and such (though anything is possible) but I think you can build a bond with the bird and at least have it prefer your company, step up on your finger or perch; ride around on your shoulder and do some tricks for you and the like. Once bonded with you he/she may be willing to do much more.
As for how, I say the way to a conures heart is through food. My Conure will literally do anything for a sunflower or safflower seed. You will have to go very slow - first just providing a treat in its cage and standing nearby. then feeding seeds from your hand through the bars, then with the cage door open and such. Moving toward feeding from your hand and “step up” training. This may take weeks or months, but would be so rewarding to give this little fella a new chance at a good life and a connection with you. This bird must be desperately lonely. As you probably know conures come from a flock and mate for life so their innate desire to connect and bond is very strong. I hope this works in your favor.

Be very patient, talk to the bird and tell him you really like him and offer toys, bits of food in your hand and just be there for him. Also, study up on parrots as there are many good books on how to parent a parrot to read and learn how to tame your little darling.
I take my bird in my hand, holding their feet with my fingers, and shower them like a baby, he/she allows me to open each wing on its turn to shower well. I can rarely get the bird to wash by him/herself unless is the water in the big cage where will often take a dip. Same sort of bird.
When I wash my hands and Victoria is near by I cup my hands and she takes a bath in my hands
My conure won't take a bath anywhere except in her bowel. She's stubborn.
What a stinker! But that’s okay, let Birdie do Birdie. If that is how she feels comfortable bathing I say let her. Just clean out her water bowl each time.

They are quite easy to train to poop in a certain place when out of the cage, mine would actually sleep on my pillow by my head. Would hold her poop till I got up, I'd wake up, hold her over toilet and she would drop a big load of crap. Lol. I miss that bird so much. She got into a fight with a bigger conure and died in her sleep. Didn't see obvious wounds, but I guess she was hurt pretty bad.

Agreed. it is easy to train them to poop on command. The challenging thing is that they have to poop every 15-30 minutes and it is more difficult to train them to hold it during the day until a bathroom is available or to notify you that they need to go. And it’s quite disruptive to take them to the bathroom every 15 minutes. So It’s kind of hit or miss. If cleaning up poop on the regular is a deal breaker, I would not recommend making the 30 year commitment to a green cheek. It is hard to know how successful any individual will be in the toilet training arena.
MY conure loves having a bath with a bowl under running water and he also has had a shower with me once though he didn't want to the second time. He has baths basically every day. My dads conure had a bath twice yesterday. I have no idea why they want to bath so much but it's awesome watching them

It's amazing how you got him to do those trick and take bath ,I have one too but my bird don't like to go on my hand he bite or if you touch his cage he take bath in kitchen sink he loves I just found you ty keep up vedios I'm going to watch and try these things with him .
Mine is 10 months old and wants to nibble on me all the time, I have to wear turtlenecks and long sleeves. If I have a small mole or freckle she bites it. Is this normal and how do I stop it if it is?

Eh, I wouldn’t worry about it. Let Birdie do birdie and just make sure he gets a fresh dish each time he has a bath. As long as he is getting a bath and enjoying it I don’t see a problem. If he needs more room to fully bathe you could consider putting a low wide bowl in the bottom of the cage for bathing. He may feel more safe in his cage. My guy is often fearful of bathing in large open spaces as he feels he is susceptible to predators in the open. Some birds may prefer a more enclosed space like a small bathroom. They also have cage attachments made for bathing. BUT if your bird is happy and this is working for him, I think what you have is totally fine.

Christy CoOl - to each their own. It’s okay if you would not do the same. I can see where you are coming from. Thanks for bringing it up. I actually wash the dish he bathes in in the dishwasher before and after he bathes. Also those dishes are set aside just for him. We do not eat from them. I guess it is possible to have some residual on the rack it’s self. I mostly use the dish rack for his baths since I have a dishwasher and little use for a drying rack. Personally, I am not concerned. If you are concerned, but want to use the same method you could wash the rack between baths as well or you could try some of the other methods i mention in the video. R candy - that’s fine as long as it’s okay with you. Marco used to bathe in his water dish with his previous owner, then got used to the method I showed in the video, so they are definitely able to try new things. They just need to feel very safe and secure when they try a new style of bathing because bathing is one of the most vulnerable times for a bird. Their feathers are water logged and they are not able to fly from danger easily.
How do you clean up bird droppings.... if i have to daily that's a turn off for me else I'd love to try a conure!

Kris Ragu - To be honest, if you are worried about changing the cage daily, I recommend you do not adopt a bird of any variety . They are known mess makers. The droppings in the cage are the least of your concern. They will poop on you and all over your house and make big food messes every day. They need a variety of pellets and fresh fruits and veggies which they love to fling all over the place. Believe me when I say, You would constantly be cleaning up after a bird if you were to get one. This part of owning a bird is not glamorous and there is no real way around it. Birds are designed by nature to eat things with seeds in a messy manor in order to spread the seed then fertilize those seeds with their poop. Birds are an integral part of our ecosystem in this way, but when you remove them from their natural environment and put them in a clean home, their brilliant germination skills unfortunately just translate to a big mess. Additionally, They need to be out of the cage, with you for multiple hours every day; whenever you are home. They will have a very low quality of life and negatively affect the quality of your own life if you do not give them the attention they need. You have to be willing to accept this bird as a full fledged member of the family who does everything the family does. They also live for 30 years so it is a difficult relationship to “try” as you say. Thirty years is a huge commitment that lasts longer than the majority of marriages. I love my Conure, but these are some of the real challenges I deal with on the daily. And I know from experience that these challenges can be difficult to fully understand until you are in it. Sorry if this sounds harsh, I just want to deliver it to you straight, so you know what you are getting into and to avoid a future rehoming situation for another Green Cheek. I am glad you asked and are thinking about the things that would make owning a parrot difficult for you. I think you have a leg up on many parrot owners in this regard, because many folks don’t fully think it through before purchasing a parrot. I very much appreciate that my husband already had experience with birds before we agreed to adopt Chicken from a friend whose deteriorating health kept him from being able to keep Chicken's quality of life up. My husband took care of the feeding, cleaning, and socializing during my adjustment period, but we're now Forever Friends.

Not yet (1 year). I guess things are quite hectic for them, still. But they're moving to a nearby island, where my parents-in-law also live. So I'm optimistic that it'll happen.
My best friend thinks she'd like one; but she has a rather full, stressful life, so I think the best scenario is for her to bird-sit from time to time, even if we're not out of town. I think Chicken should live with her for a month or two (as it took around that long for Chicken and me to bond), then shorter stays whenever mutually agreeable. For now, I take Chicken with me when I go to spend a few hours with my friend.
