      He obviously uses two rings. One is solid and one is open. But he changes them really quick. So in the beginning Teller only is allowed to check his right hand, because in the left hand he hides the open version if the ring.

    He actually did a podcast with one of the producers of the show explaining how fool us is run. The discussion between penn, teller and the producers takes about ten minutes before they tell the producers how they think it was done, they get ONE chance to get it. If they get it wrong, they have been fooled no matter what. The producers then figure out a way for Penn to communicate how they thought (incorrectly) it was done to the performer, who says no and they get the trophy moment. Penn and Teller are at no point told how it is done until after the show, if they ask, and they very rarely do, due to professional courtesy. The producers are told exactly how it is done, and shown twice in a row so they can figure out the best presentation of the effect for the studio audience and the TV cameras, so the illusion isn’t spoiled accidentally. You also have to bear in mind that Penn & Teller only see the routine once in real time, and don’t have the luxury of replays and slow motion.

    I think Penn was still speaking in code. He asked him if "that ring", the one in his hand, was gimmicked. They saw no switch which means the ring in his hand needed to be real for it to be sleight of hand. He knew exactly what he was asking. Amazing sleight of hand.

    • @yudodis333
      @yudodis333 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Exactly right... When the trick is done with sleight of hand, Penn and Teller have to actually see the move for them to not be fooled.. otherwise just about every trick they could just say "sleight of hand" and never be fooled lol I'm pretty sure they've stated this before like with Shin Lim... They knew he was doing sleight of hand but they couldn't actually catch some of the moves which means he fooled them

    • @BigPapaJustify
      @BigPapaJustify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm a bit mixed on this. A linguistic victory in some context, but he still said the words ''if you can tell us that was done in anyway other than pure sleight of hand, then we're not gonna lie, you fooled us''. He didn't actually answer penns question. Just said ''That is a completely normal ring'' which means he didn't fool them, he just never owned up to Penn being right by avoiding the topic like a politician xD. 3.56 at 0.25x speed, yeah I spoiled it for myself but you can clearly see that ring open on tellers finger.

      @@lawrencewhiting4927 I dunno. A con is different than a trick, but that's kinda weak even for a con. The question was if it was done in anyway other than pure sleight of hand, and only part of it was, probably done after the performance while he's waiting for the judges decision.

    • @nv8227
      @nv8227 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      You guys are getting it. The ring at the end was real. That's all that matters. If he had a gimmicked ring or what I believe was a half ring, they didn't see the switch. One of the other replies clarifies this. They saw nothing, they made sure they said that to him. He was able to switch from a real ring to a gimmicked ring and back. That's sleight of hand and they didn't see the switch. He fooled them.

    I think the key was Penn referenced "THAT ring". I think they know there was a second ring, but since he so cleanly handled everything that it was perfect slight of hand and that's why they gave it to him. Since the gimmicked ring was already away somewhere, he's not lying by saying that ring is not gimmicked. Just my thoughts.

      @@sonicenamdtwice8584 I hear what you are saying, but what makes me think this is that Penn first starts, ...you have a ring that is carefully constructed.... Then at the end he specifically says that ring. The trick is impossible in the sense that a solid ring isn't going to go through Teller's finger (or anyone's), so I can only think that Penn is giving him an out. I'm probably totally wrong, it's just the way he started with a ring then switched to that ring that bothers me. Of course he may have straight up lied as you said in which case I hope someone from fool us comes out and says something since that feels wrong to let it go.

    I think it is important to note that Penn's wording was "If you had that ring gimmicked in any way..." in reference to the ring given to Teller and "If it is anything other that a ring that comes apart" referring more to the trick as a hole. The first statement could have been arguably beaten with a simple swap that P&T admitted to not have been able to catch. The second statement however was more definitive and was responded to with "It does not come apart." That rules out any break in the opening up of a solid ring. I think it is safe to assume that more than one ring, or partial ring was used, but that none of them had any moving parts to them.

  • @trailerwookie
    @trailerwookie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    He is clearly using a gimmick half ring and a regular ring. His sleight of hand is near perfect while he hides the other ring. However, just as he gets ready to put the ring on Teller's finger, the revealing camera angle shows both rings being placed into his right hand. You can see this at 3:42. Teller couldn't see it, nor could Penn and the audience. It was just a fluke that the camera caught it. If you watch closely at 4:09 he pockets the gimmick .

The fooling part was he gave out a ring for examination seemingly without a switch. That means either the switch was really really good, or the gimmick ring was crafted very very good so it can be examined (even by Teller) without giving away its secret.

    This is a perfect and sad example on how misinformation spreads on the internet. One guy makes a fake claim to generate some clicks for his videos, and everybody just parrots this misinformation without thinking.
    Garrett did not lie. Penn said "If you did it with pure slide of hand,..., we didn't catch you on anything'. Obviously, Penn wouldn't give away the method how it was done, so the 'pure slide of hand' was code for switching between two rings. Since P&T didn't see any switching, they went for the second explanation of ONE gimmicked ring that opens up. Here Penn says 'If it is anything than a ring that comes apart, you have fooled us.'. Since he didn't use a ring that comes apart, he fooled them, and deserved the trophy.
    Also another point, do you really think, that they would name the episode after him (it's called 'Lord of the RIng'), if he lied to them?

    • @Bzuhl
      @Bzuhl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly : he means "We think you gave the gimmicked ring to examin and it was so well gimmicked that Teller didn't see it." And words this as implying "there is only 1 ring".
      If these two statement are not true Garett is entitled to the trophy.
      He cleverly added some tricks that would not fool them but that they know to be performed with a normal ring to muddy the water.

      Yep. And one thing the other site fails to mention, or conveniently forgets, is that the producers of the show know EXACTLY how every trick is done. And they are monitoring everything. They didn't take a lunch break when Garrett got the trophy. If there was some shenanigans, they would have spoken up.
      I think the ring that he had in his hand at the end was not a gimmicked ring.

      @@teddydiychannel5673 The video you saw now has this comment from the maker of the video: "Update After reading through your response. I agree 2 rings have been used, 1 full ring and one is a half." You do not see the ring separate because no ring used in that illusion separates.

      @@j.wilsoncork896 He did lie, whether the ring he handed to teller was a real one, the one he used for 90% of the tricks was his gimmicked openable ring. He sold this product and tricks to go with it. And he did technically lie if what we saw him and Penn say was true. Also back in 2019 the producer who had this rule (of being told the trick and letting P&T know the truth) passed away and the rule was changed. You can actually look that up. Don't defend a magician who lies like that so easily. That's just dumb.

  • @joshvanriet5445

    1st off Penn was very narrow in his "guess". He said "that ring comes apart, by magnets or by a shell" "if there was sleight of hand involved you fooled us, because we didn't see any of it". I would say copping and getting rid of a SECONDARY gaff does not go against either of the two statements that Penn made regarding this trick.
    2nd can we just take a moment to appreciate the amount of practice it takes for him to pull off some of the sleights he does in this trick? All of this with Teller standing 18 or so inches away from him burning his hands!
    3rd he even was so good he still has a bunch of you fooled even after you "watched it at 0.0005 speed on youtube and saw everything". If you are saying he lied you didn't see everything, as it should be.
