3 Ways to Fancy up a Strap

  • I'll show you how to embellish your leather straps 3 different ways in this tutorial. First we'll use seatbelt webbing (we stock many types in the shop at sewhungryhippie.com). This is the same technique used for grossgrain ribbon. Find seatbelt webbing here: sewhungryhippi...
    Our sewable leather straps require no hardware to apply to bags. Find them here: sewhungryhippi...
    Second, I'll use cork to do a quick overlay. We stock printed cork in our shop too - find them here: sewhungryhippi...
    Thirdly, I use fabric. Same technique, but a little different in application method due to the layers.
    I'm using these tools in this tutorial:
    1. Steam a Seam OR Wonder Under fusible webs: sewhungryhippi...
    2. By Annie's double sided sticky tape: sewhungryhippi...
    3. Teflon baking sheet as my pressing sheet: amzn.to/45nudOA
    4. Mini Oliso iron: sewhungryhippi...
    5. Gutermann all purpose thread: sewhungryhippi...
    6. Microtex 80/12 needles: sewhungryhippi...

    Thank you. I just watched again. Enjoyed it very much. I tend to use lots of double-sided tape for straps. That may be too much but it is where you feel comfortable. Oh and great point about the key fobs. Thanks again.

    I use a straight pin to ‘score’ the paper backing on the wonder under. Just a half inch to an inch will make it easier to peel it off. I can never start on an edge.

    Great tutorial. I wish that this had shown up in my feed yesterday--before I made my wonky fabric strap! I will definitely be using the stitch witchery when I make my next straps.

    Does the thickness of the strap prohibit the use of a slide for a crossbody bag.

    • @SewHungryHippie
      @SewHungryHippie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! Slides work fine with these.

    Great tip!! I have done this with just clipping fabric onto the strap and it going wonky even clipped down. So I def will do this next time I make a fancy strap.

    I see you are just placing your iron down flat on your wool mat, is that going to burn the wool mat?

    Checking in late, Barbie, would .25" double-sided fusible tape work, or is that too narrow?

    • @SewHungryHippie
      @SewHungryHippie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would use two rows, side by side. I'm careful though.

    • @thepiececorps
      @thepiececorps ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SewHungryHippie I use that tape a lot, especially when attaching a sleeve, but kinda thought it's too narrow for this.
