Born in 1685 in Naples, Italy, Scarlatti was the son of the famous composer Alessandro Scarlatti. He showed early promise in music and received his first musical education from his father.
At the age of 17, Scarlatti moved to Rome to study under the tutelage of the renowned composer and teacher, Bernardo Pasquini. During this time, he also had the opportunity to study with other influential musicians such as Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro and Benedetto Marcello.
In 1719, Scarlatti moved to Portugal where he served as the music master to Princess Maria Magdalena Barbara, the wife of King João V. It was during this time that he composed a large number of his keyboard sonatas, which would become his most famous and influential works.
