‘As long as you keep it cut low’-BYD…you ain’t never lied. 😆Therein lies the challenge…most folks, including me, don’t walk that mower every 3 days…when Bermuda is surging…the HOC continues to raise up higher and higher…as the temps rise…to manage it during the heat…there’s an inclination to raise the mower height as the growth outpaces your ability to get out and cut it every 3 days…then when your grass growth begins to slow mid August or when temps drop in your area…& we’re cutting weekly…weekends only…the opposite effect occurs…you begin to take off more than 1/3…even lowering the blade in some cases…without realizing you’re chipping into the stem…which is brown. I’ve found that 1.5” - 2” is ideal for my Bermuda…over it’s green season…but I do tend to fall into the HOC trap…at the start of the season I’m around 1-1.5 and at the end of warm season growing cycle…I’m above 2”…due to either a few days of heavy rain…which promotes rapid growth…or to stave off the dreaded drought look…I’ll skim it so it doesn’t ‘look bad’ during hot/dry rain-less periods. And don’t go out of town for an extended period and think your Bermuda is going to wait for you to return without issue.🤣 So…I’m always doing the Bermuda height of cut dance dependent on weather (rain and heat) and my ability to get out and cut it. I think at some point during the growing season you may have to live with taking a green hit as it’s virtually impossible to know exactly where your height of cut ‘should be’ throughout the growing season? And even if you set it and forget it…the weather will influence what your Bermuda ‘looks like’ even under a DIY maintenance program.

If I mow 2 inches my entire lawn would be dead and I would have a 400 dollar water bill.

@Twinski Bro, you worded it PERFECTLY!! You just outlined all of the challenges that occur during the summer and how most of us respond to them as well as WHY!! Feels good knowing I’m not the only one being challenged in these specific ways. The rain and the outpaced growth with the temptation to just skim for fear of taking a green hit is all REAL!!! 😰😂

I finally took that green hit, even though it’s later in the season, lol!!! My front yard was maintained at 3.5” and the rest was maintained at 4.5”. I got to the point that I didn’t like the way it felt when I would walk through when I’m out playing with my dogs. I also didn’t like how long my grass would retain moisture in the later mornings. So I scalped it all down to 2” to maintain at 2.5” for the remainder of the season. I can tell that it’s already starting to recover, even though it’s only been a couple of days.

That video was like the preacher talking to that one sinner in the congregation. I'm that guy with the 3" Hybrid and brown after a mowing at 3". My lawn is impossible to keep level so I keep raising the mower deck throughout the Summer. I definitely needed to watch this video. It's too late in the season to correct now, but next year I will not go any higher than 2". Lesson learned!!

I needed this so much. I’ve power raked, liquid aerated and hit it with fert and iron/booster and my lawn it the healthiest bright green lawn I’ve ever seen lol. But I admit I cut too high. We’ve been getting a lot of rain in my part of Missouri so I’m gonna do that routine again and cut low then maintain. Wish me luck 😤

Love it man. I just noticed this in my yard and couldn’t tell if it was fungus or what. This year I took over my church’s lot and it takes up a lot of my time so I’ve been letting my yard grow up to 4 or 5 inches before mowing it and then when I do it has a yellow undertone.
What I’ve gathered from this video is that I need to scalp it to 1.5 inches one time, water it when it’s low and taking in sunlight and then mow it at 2 or 2.5 inches weekly to allow that sunlight to hit the stems lower down.
    You’re a lifesaver. Subbed.

Thank you for the informative video. I’ve been cutting my Bermuda Tiffgreen 328(?) at a height of 3/4” for a few years. I spent a good amount of time on setting up the lawn so It is level. When I first started cutting my lawn I thought something was wrong to see brown for a week or so....but I learned that this was normal. The top half would come in green later. I have maintained it by thatching and plugging it. Once in a while I spray simply lawn solutions 28-0-0 (nitrogen) and in 4 days it is beautiful!

Plus, I suspect she will have a nice bill for rhizoctonia in the near future. @@polocash11 I don't touch anything without charging for it. I won't do a job without doing it right, aside from this instance of cutting 3 inches too much of grass. I had her sign the agreement. I charged for each pass and the cleanup. I clearly explained the risks, the stress and the damage by doing the job the way she insisted. It costs me exactly zero dollars to not mow her lawn, but once she was willing to accept responsibility and she hired me to mow and maintain weekly, I gained a client and by the time I left, and she saw that I was right, she trusted me. I was paid before I left the property. My job was done and she was satisfied.

What should I do during the mid summer months when its triple digits and hardly any rain? I DIY my lawn, and water it 3 times a week and kept it at 2 inches and had spots go dormant/die from the heat. I am still new to DIY and learning everything I can. Thanks in advance!

Sometimes you can’t beat Mother Nature. You’ll have to ride it out but I’d apply a 7-0-20 if possible to help it recover when the rains 🌧 return.

Great video not sure if I missed it or not but I was hoping that you would’ve told us if it would recover and eventually turn green again or not?

BGC love your videos. My question today is, I live in N. Texas near Dallas and it's nearing the end of May with temps in the lower 90's. I've learned a lot from you on mowing height for Bermuda. I have been cutting at 2.50 to 2.75 using a Cub Cadet. Would you advise to drop it down to 2.0 from those heights now or wait until after the late season last cut and begin the new season next year at the 1.5 to 2.0 height? Thank You for the very informative videos!

If you drop it down that low now and it starts to scalp, I’d raise it to the height that doesn’t or try lowering height but mow twice a week to keep at that height and see if it stays green.

I'd rather be brown that be that leggy. I hard reset with the quickness. Im better with PGR now so i shouldnt have too many grren hits next season. Also plan on getting rid of the tifway and going tifgrand. Because the tifway is so slow to green up after the green hit.

I have tif 419. The bigger my tree gets, the worse my lawn looks. Live oak to big to thin myself now.

Is it normal for my 1-year old Toro push lawnmower to be choking out in barely tall bermuda grass if the grass is wet?

I’d take it to the shop for a tuneup. Or replace plug, filter and blade yourself to see if it improves first.
