When you're talking about metal you HAVE to throw Nickleback in there. Nickleback is, hands down, the best brutal death metal band on earth. No one can top their brilliant musicality and burlesque vocal flourishes by virtuoso Chad Kroeger. They are the pinnacle of musical mastery. "All the Right Reasons" was arguably one of the most important albums in the history of death metal. Says Maestro Kroeger, "I want a big black jet with a bedroom in it. I want a king-sized tub. Room enough for ten. Plus me." There's a deep pain within those words. Read them again. Study them. This pain is the essence of all death metal.

All stuff Devin Townsend has ever done is highly recommended. His discography varies from the extremely heavy and manic stuff of Strapping Young Lad to more peaceful metal of his solo career and even to mere ambient and new age. Quality is very good regardless of the genre. To me Devin's music defined my music taste pretty fundamentally. After discovering Devin I have got into both more heavy stuff like death metal and also more progressive and post-metal-like music.

MetalListMaker25 Depends, do you count bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and Lamb of God as metal and if they are worthy of being put alongside those bands? Not all of these bands are pure heavy metal but they have elements of that in their music. And I'm not an expert on heavy metal. Punk was and still is number one to me but def there are some great bands that are under metal label. Good that you mentioned Hanoi Rocks. Maybe The Stooges and New York Dolls as well. Anyway, peace you all!
If you're new to metal with no interest or exposure to death/black metal here's my top five to look into.. It's diverse you're bound to dig something on this short list... Rush: Rush are the go-to guys for Progressive Metal. They have a classic rock feel at times. Listen to Dream theater for a more modern take on Prog Metal. Judas Priest: Albums 'Stained Class' and 'Screaming for Vengeance' for classic metal, 'Painkiller' for faster metal. Iron Maiden: If you like 'Painkiller', then you'll like Iron Maiden more. Iced Earth are a more recent example if you're looking for a more modern sound. Metallica: 'Master Of Puppets' is a good place to start for thrash metal, their "Black Album" (self-titled) is a gateway of sorts into generic metal. Also Megadeth's 'Rust In Peace' is also a must-listen while exploring thrash metal. Black Sabbath: The fathers of Metal. If you want to explore metal your gotta check them out, if you haven't already.
I would choose Satyricon over Emperor and also Dark Tranquillity over At the Gates only because I feel these bands are probably a bit more accessible to a new metal fan. Amorphis is another one that comes to mind.
For classic, cleaner vocal bands... I'd probably recommend new fans to metal to the basics. Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. Maybe Queensryche, but they are the kind of band you either like or don't. For more current, mixed up vocals... I'd probably recommend Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head, GWAR, Katatonia, and Opeth. For the heavier, darker genres (Death, doom, black, ect.)... I would first of all recommend Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Death, Emperor, Gorgoroth, and maybe Rotting Christ. I personally believe that the kinds of music that are out there are too vast to really narrow down to just a few. There are some bands that everyone who gets into metal should know, and there are some that you should find on your own just to experiment. I didn't like black metal and the likes until I heard Demigod from Behemoth. Everyone has different taste, so find what you like and enjoy what you find.
I found crotch duster from one of your older videos. I listened to the album on TH-cam fell in love and I had to order the album from amazon as soon as I had a bit of cash! Not many people know of them, they are like a hidden gem of metal that only a few metal fans know of! so new fans or old timers GO LISTEN TO CROTCHDUSTER!
This is a great list but i think you should put the names of the bands you talk about in the description or in some kind of subtitle because some of them are hard to understand
If you are just getting into metal, go listen to Lamb of God. That is how I got into bands like, Obituary, Converge, Eyehategod, High on Fire and Bolt Thrower. And Lamb of God is awesome. They still are my all time favorite band lol
good stuff! i'm looking forward to checking a few of these guys out. i love insomnium and swallow the sun, so i'm interested to find the band you mentioned in connection with them - but i couldn't catch the name - you said they only made two albums. can anyone tell me who they are?
I'd personally recommend more melodic bands to start with, just in case raw death and black metal is a little much for you. Artists like In Flames, Angel Vivaldi, Dream Theater, Children Of Bodom, August Burns Red, All That Remains, Between The Buried And Me, and Testament. I definitely recommend all if these to new metal listeners
Breaking Benjamin(good band for absolute starter//Hopeless,Dear Agony are their best songs),Filter(Amalgamut//Drug Boy,Columind),Deftones(White Pony//Korea,Be quiet and drive),Tool(Aenima//jimmy),Chevelle(Wonder What's Next,La Gargola//Hunter eats Hunter,Grab thy hand),Helmet(Meantime,Betty),System Of A Down(Self titled album,Toxicity),Melvins(Houdini//Night goat,civilized worm),Alice in Chains(we die young),Intervals(Fable),Mastodon(Oblivion,Porcupine Tree (In Absentia//Blackest Eye),Slipknot(Sulfur),Lamb of God,Dream Theater(Train of Thought//honor thy Father),Opeth(Bleak/Demon of the Fall should be 1st song)
I think when it comes to Metalcore, Misery Signals is a good representative for new-comers. I do not listen to a lot of that sub genre, but I have always enjoyed them.
My 20 recommendations to new metal fans (in no particular order): Mercyful Fate King Diamond Saxon Overkill Death Kreator Sodom Destruction Exciter Bathory Dissection Candlemass Heavy Load Sortilége Edge Of Sanity Testament Exodus Entombed Dismember Running Wild
Metallica and slayer are a must I would've added Fear Factory as well but sooooo glad to see you put Mercyful fate and King Diamond which are also a must.
+ecgodsmack86 I agree with you, Metallica and Slayer are essential bands,, two of the most influental metal bands of all time. Thank you, I am glad to hear. :)
If anyone's interested in death metal, check out Cryptopsy. If I could describe this band in ten words, it'd be, "So heavy, I think I'm guaranteed to burn for sure." I have to be honest, though. As badass of a vocalist Lord Worm is, sometimes he sounds so silly that I can't help but burst into hysterical laughter. That's just me, though.
I have to recommend alot of new prog metal bands, like protest the hero and Intervals. Look up Sumerian records and they half some decent prog bands as well. Also some solo prog artists have some interesting stuff too.
Baroness is fucking awesome! Just listened to the Yellow & Green album on Spotify and it blew my mind away. One of the best recent metal albums I've listened to
My tops? And probably very accessible? Mastodon, older and newer, it all rocks, Dream Theater, Opeth, Avenged Sevenfold is accessible due to how streamlined they are
I am more into the traditional like Sabbath and Priest. But I am looking to get into more prog metal/rock. I also listen to some thrash and very little death. So could I get any recommendations??
Michael Carlile Opeth, Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Agalloch. Dream Theater is complete shit and they have no originality and lack musical brilliance, but try to make up for it playing overly complicated passages that don't tell you anything. (Octavarium has it's ok moments and it's the only album I would suggest to listen to).
He completely left out power metal, my most listened to sub-genre, so ima throw some out for you guys. Pathfinder Damnation Angels Nightwish Edguy Helloween Angra(not quite sure they count as power, more progressive) Symphony X(Again, on the progressive side) Epica Within Temptation (older stuff. Newer stuff isn't bad, but it's moving closer to Evanescence than metal) Firewind Dragonforce(I'm not a fan of their extreme speed, but maybe you will be. So they go on the list.) Pellek(lead singer of Damnation Angels. Has his own solo album which is pretty good and does many covers on TH-cam ranging from power metal to pop to anime and Disney songs.) Lost Horizon Dragonland(I actually forget their name all the time, so for verification on the band I'm talking about, look up starfall) Sonata Arctica That's all I can get off the top of my head in power metal, but it should be more than enough for you to start finding your own, should you enjoy the genre.
Ok, Avant Garde section, I've heard the names Agalloch and Arturus but I can't hear the other bands name very well at all. Can someone tell me what the last one is?
coverkillernation Avantasia are a good one I think. Despite them being a little less heavy, it's a great bridge to metal if you're used to lighter stuff.
Legion of the Damned-amazing if not the best thrash/death metal band Arch enemy- great melodic death metal band Vektor- Insane new wave thrash band Some of my favorites
this is my 20 starter bands (from the begining to now) for any metal bands: 1. Black Sabbath 11. Dream Theatre 2. Judas Preist 12. Anvil (very underrated back in the day) 3. Iron Maiden 13. Death 4. Metallica 14. Cannibal Corpse 5. Megadeth 15. Testament 6. Slayer 16. Death Angel 7. Anthrax 17. Ozzy Ozbourn 8. Motor head 18. Avenge Sevenfold 9. Pantera 19. Lamb of God 10. Venom 20. Disturbed
With Blaze should have mention Wolfsbane the band he was in before Maiden was such a good band both "Live Fast, Die Fast" and "All Hell's Breaking Loose Down at Little Kathy Wilson's Place" are must have's as well XD..Got to see Wolfsbane at the Marquee Club in London such a good show also got to meet Blaze. Also for newbies..\m/ Exodus Saxon Manowar Rainbow Annihilator Alice In Chains Thin Lizzy Dio Deep Purple And the First 2 Queen Albums Queen and Queen II
Quick question, I'm fairly new to the genre, I was wondering whether or not 'Alter Bridge' is considered metal, I really love there music, but can't really determine whether it is hard rock or heavy metal.
Insomnium, certainly worth checking out if Melodic Death Metal sounds like it'll tickle your fancy. Also for that matter, Omnium Gatherum is pretty cool too. Symphonic metal I'd recomment Nightwish and Xandria. And in general Lacuna Coil too.
You might have been thinking of Wishbone Ash as the 'precursor to iron maiden'. Also, I'd have lumped Isis with Pelican and Animals as leaders, since its music not focused on lyrics, and they can sound like Pelican at times. Shame they're done, but 5 albums was enough.
What about Mithotyn with the black/folk metal thing? I turned a buddy of mine into a full fledged metalhead by introducing him to Children of Bodom and Mithotyn.
i love melodic death metal, so far im really into Amon Amarth, In Flames and The Black Dahlia Murder (kinda melodic death metal) can anyone reccomend me some solid bands?
A Finnish band called Diablo. I would recommend songs like Icaros, Living Dead Superstar, The Preacher, Mimic 47 and Penetration. Their facebook: /diablobandofficial
I think you need to listen to System of a Down to start your metal journey. They probably have the most unique sound in metal, and have absolutely amazing songs. Chop Suey! is a great example
The only metal bands I really listen to are Tool, SOAD, Korn, Primus, Black Light Burns and Alice in Chains (and Porcupine Tree if you count them as metal). Which bands on this list would I like?
Ok! First of all, nice stuff in the video, but if you want some more stuff here we go: thrash: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Evile, havok, Anthrax Death: dying fetus, cannibal corpse, Insomnium, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth Black: cradle of filth, carach angren, mayhem, behemoth, darkthrone power: freedom call, Dragonforce, masterplan, sabaton some more stuff: Eluveitie, Dream Theater, Orphaned land, Nightwish, Sonata Artica, volbeat, and there is so much more.... Don't be afraid to check out random video's that may be related to video's you have watched. I have discovered a lot of great bands for myself through that method. What also works very well, is to type in youtube 'Best *enter genre* bands'. Stay metal!

I agree That Death is the leaders of the Death metal. It's so complex their sound. Their great.
Acid Bath
Crowbar
Slayer
Sepultura
Gojira
Lamb of God
Fear Factory
Pantera
Meshuggah
Mastodon
Suicide Silence
Korn - Korn
Ministry
Hatebreed
Opeth
Megadeth
Soulfly
Motorhead
Celtic Frost
Type O Negative
this list is the only one I like a lot actually
Fear Factory \m/
PANTERA
This is a great list but i think you should put the names of the bands you talk about in the description or in some kind of subtitle because some of them are hard to understand
If you are just getting into metal, go listen to Lamb of God. That is how I got into bands like, Obituary, Converge, Eyehategod, High on Fire and Bolt Thrower. And Lamb of God is awesome. They still are my all time favorite band lol
good stuff! i'm looking forward to checking a few of these guys out. i love insomnium and swallow the sun, so i'm interested to find the band you mentioned in connection with them - but i couldn't catch the name - you said they only made two albums. can anyone tell me who they are?
you should show a disc or picture of the bands you speak of
I'd personally recommend more melodic bands to start with, just in case raw death and black metal is a little much for you. Artists like In Flames, Angel Vivaldi, Dream Theater, Children Of Bodom, August Burns Red, All That Remains, Between The Buried And Me, and Testament. I definitely recommend all if these to new metal listeners
I'm just glad that someone finally gave a shout out to Pain Of Salvation.
The reflections of the monitor on your glasses is making me think you're a robot.
Baroness nuff said
Breaking Benjamin(good band for absolute starter//Hopeless,Dear Agony are their best songs),Filter(Amalgamut//Drug Boy,Columind),Deftones(White Pony//Korea,Be quiet and drive),Tool(Aenima//jimmy),Chevelle(Wonder What's Next,La Gargola//Hunter eats Hunter,Grab thy hand),Helmet(Meantime,Betty),System Of A Down(Self titled album,Toxicity),Melvins(Houdini//Night goat,civilized worm),Alice in Chains(we die young),Intervals(Fable),Mastodon(Oblivion,Porcupine Tree (In Absentia//Blackest Eye),Slipknot(Sulfur),Lamb of God,Dream Theater(Train of Thought//honor thy Father),Opeth(Bleak/Demon of the Fall should be 1st song)
Dream Theater, Opeth, Slayer, Epica, System of a Down, maybe even Marilyn Mansons early work
I think when it comes to Metalcore, Misery Signals is a good representative for new-comers. I do not listen to a lot of that sub genre, but I have always enjoyed them.
My 20 recommendations to new metal fans (in no particular order):
Mercyful Fate
King Diamond
Saxon
Overkill
Death
Kreator
Sodom
Destruction
Exciter
Bathory
Dissection
Candlemass
Heavy Load
Sortilége
Edge Of Sanity
Testament
Exodus
Entombed
Dismember
Running Wild
Thanks for Steel Panther!
Type O Negative.
One of the best recent metal albums I've listened to
What about Amorphis?
My tops? And probably very accessible? Mastodon, older and newer, it all rocks, Dream Theater, Opeth, Avenged Sevenfold is accessible due to how streamlined they are
I am going to check out Crotchduster and Kreator. I am not new to metal but i am up to listen to something new.
I am more into the traditional like Sabbath and Priest. But I am looking to get into more prog metal/rock. I also listen to some thrash and very little death. So could I get any recommendations??
Rush, Primus, Dream Theater. Listening to those 3 bands entire discography will probably kill you in about 3 hours so happy listening friend!
I listen to a lot of those 3 bands. I just want so much more
Michael Carlile Opeth, Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Agalloch. Dream Theater is complete shit and they have no originality and lack musical brilliance, but try to make up for it playing overly complicated passages that don't tell you anything. (Octavarium has it's ok moments and it's the only album I would suggest to listen to).
Lamb of God, Lazaurs A.D, Vektor, Chrildren of Bodom, Opeth
He completely left out power metal, my most listened to sub-genre, so ima throw some out for you guys.
Pathfinder
Damnation Angels
Nightwish
Edguy
Helloween
Angra(not quite sure they count as power, more progressive)
Symphony X(Again, on the progressive side)
Epica
Within Temptation (older stuff. Newer stuff isn't bad, but it's moving closer to Evanescence than metal)
Firewind
Dragonforce(I'm not a fan of their extreme speed, but maybe you will be. So they go on the list.)
Pellek(lead singer of Damnation Angels. Has his own solo album which is pretty good and does many covers on TH-cam ranging from power metal to pop to anime and Disney songs.)
Lost Horizon
Dragonland(I actually forget their name all the time, so for verification on the band I'm talking about, look up starfall)
Sonata Arctica
That's all I can get off the top of my head in power metal, but it should be more than enough for you to start finding your own, should you enjoy the genre.
Stratovarius
guitarkoala5 I don't listen to them, so I left them out, but I hear great things about them.
+darkdudironaji I would list Nightwish to Symphonic metal, buuuut I think some stuff from Xandria is also really cool
Ok, Avant Garde section, I've heard the names Agalloch and Arturus but I can't hear the other bands name very well at all. Can someone tell me what the last one is?
Was the Maiden precursor you were thinking of Samson?
nah, not Bruce Bruce's first band. I was thinking about Wishbone Ash. Damn my brain sometimes. haha
That's what I was thinking. Hahah
coverkillernation Ah Wishbone Ash. I love it when other people know that band.
coverkillernation Avantasia are a good one I think. Despite them being a little less heavy, it's a great bridge to metal if you're used to lighter stuff.
+RanterInShades I was gonna say Judas Priest.
what's the band at 10:50?
Legion of the Damned-amazing if not the best thrash/death metal band
Arch enemy- great melodic death metal band
Vektor- Insane new wave thrash band

What about Gwar, and The Browning?
Quick question, I'm fairly new to the genre, I was wondering whether or not 'Alter Bridge' is considered metal, I really love there music, but can't really determine whether it is hard rock or heavy metal.
Alcest best post-metal band? Try Neurosis or even Isis or Cult of Luna. These are more like it.
Where is your agalloch review?
Mechina
Destroyer 666, Doomsword, The Foreshadowing, Violator, Be'lakor, In mourning, Rishloo, Ignivomous, Evoken, Esoteric, Humimliation, ROTTING CHRIST!
Do you like Pallbearer?
Would you ever consider doing a Cannibal Corpse discography review? I'd love to hear your thoughts on all those albums!
Love the video so much, i like some bands you mention, wow 💘✌
Hey cover killer its been awhile since I started watching your videos and I was wondering what your thoughts on the band motionless in white are. Thx.
Please review the new CROWBAR
Overkill seems to be the opposite of Metallica. They just keep getting better.
Precursor to Iron Maiden? Important Heavy Metal band that's slipping his mind? JUDAS PRIEST!!!!
What is number 9? Can't catch it by ear :(
What about Mithotyn with the black/folk metal thing? I turned a buddy of mine into a full fledged metalhead by introducing him to Children of Bodom and Mithotyn.
1. Overkill
2. Pain of Salvation
3. Sun O)))
Boris
Earth
4. Katatonia
5. Nachtmystium
6. Steel Panther
7. Baroness
8.Pelican

i love melodic death metal, so far im really into Amon Amarth, In Flames and The Black Dahlia Murder (kinda melodic death metal)
can anyone reccomend me some solid bands?
Battlecross are amazing
cooldudehero123 Children of Bodom
A Finnish band called Diablo. I would recommend songs like Icaros, Living Dead Superstar, The Preacher, Mimic 47 and Penetration. Their facebook: /diablobandofficial
Latter day Carcass
The last dissection album, norther, early all that remains, at the gates
Gotta review The Serpent & The Sphere man
Anthrax slayer and megadeth
I think you need to listen to System of a Down to start your metal journey. They probably have the most unique sound in metal, and have absolutely amazing songs. Chop Suey! is a great example
they're barely metal. Alternative metal maybe.
How about FEAR FACTORY?
Burton Bell was the first metal vocalist to ever employ both clean-singing and harsh vocals.
As a recommendation I'd definitely say Dying Fetus, a great death metal band yet so underrated.
I have so much to learn, I'm only a couple bands in lol
HELP! what was number 9?
The only metal bands I really listen to are Tool, SOAD, Korn, Primus, Black Light Burns and Alice in Chains (and Porcupine Tree if you count them as metal). Which bands on this list would I like?
You might like disturbed or possibly stone sour.
Maybe some opeth, peferably heritage or their new album coming out soon pale communion.
avenged sevenfold. 'nuff said
Give Mastodon a try.
Not really metal but Wishbone Ash. I'm sure they inspired a lot of bands
Acid Bath?
VADER!
I thought this was a list of bands for NU METAL fans :p still cool vid!
Ok!
First of all, nice stuff in the video, but if you want some more stuff here we go:
thrash: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Evile, havok, Anthrax
Death: dying fetus, cannibal corpse, Insomnium, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth
Black: cradle of filth, carach angren, mayhem, behemoth, darkthrone
power: freedom call, Dragonforce, masterplan, sabaton
some more stuff:
Eluveitie, Dream Theater, Orphaned land, Nightwish, Sonata Artica, volbeat, and there is so much more....
Don't be afraid to check out random video's that may be related to video's you have watched. I have discovered a lot of great bands for myself through that method. What also works very well, is to type in youtube 'Best *enter genre* bands'.
Stay metal!
