- Robyn finally reviews this show! Was this really the best Anime of 2016? What was with all the hate?
After postponing this review for too long, Robyn finally reviews Yuri on Ice. After suffering a devastating defeat at the Grand Prix Finals, Yuri Katsuki goes home and contemplates on retiring. One day, he decides to reenact a routine once performed by skating legend Victor Nikiforov, only to realize that he was being recorded by his friends children. The video is uploaded online and goes viral which instantly grabs Victors attention. Inspired by his technique, Viktor decides to travel to Japan to become Yuri's new coach and promises to take him to the grand prix finals and win gold! However, Victor forgets a promise he made to the Junior Grand Prix final winner, Yuri Plisetsky, where he'd create an award winning routine for him if he won gold. Now both Yuri's must compete for Victors coaching, but can Yuri K overcome his anxiety and win against a gold winning performer?

Dude. I remember when I first got to this show. I was in college, I had had like three break downs on the same week and I was sending everyone and everything to fuck themselves, including my own sanity which was about to leave me. I just sat down there and watched this dude cry in the bathroom while having an anxiety attack, and I cried with him. I hold my pillow like a flipping baby and cried my heart out because I knew how he felt, I understood him so much. Every week since then, what kept me moving was the idea that I could probably pull it off like Yuri. It was so stupid that a simple show kept me moving and pushed me towards graduation man.

When I first heard YOI announced, I didn't know what to make of it. I liked sports anime so I thought I'd give it a go because why not. I ended up getting so much more out of it than I expected because the series went in an unexpected direction and I was amazed. I will always love YOI and I understand if people don't like it because of its genre, its relationships or because of the crazy fanbase. But I don't care, it's a special show that a lot of people can relate to and love. It's a truly wonderful wonderful show that I will always support with my heart!
I love this anime because I feel identified with the protagonists because anxiety is a very powerful and dangerous enemy for someone with a somewhat weak mind in the face of world pressure. what I love most is that they don't show a physical antagonist as an obstacle but that your own mind can be the one who stops you ... all my life I have been a very insecure person and, seeing how these characters show it in different ways, that made me love more "Yuri on Ice" than other series of these last years ...
The relationship of the main characters is so beautiful and it occurs so naturally that I couldn´t help but get attached to them. it's given in a constructive way and that is the kind of love that you would like to live and enjoy with your soul mate ...
Also, the dubbing and its original version are great. You can feel in the same way what the scenes show in both versions. my favorite is the original but I also like the English version very much
PS: I look forward to the movie in February and, also, I would like a second season ...
Three reasons why I love Yuri on Ice

3) THE FREAKING AWESOME LOVING RELATIONSHIP OF VICTOR AND YURI
I like the sub more. It feels weird to hear Victor and Yurio have this weird Russian accent. I know they're Russian but it's still a bit weird. And it's even a bit hard for me to understand because I'm not a born English speaker and I sometimes have trouble understanding accents.

Bwi it's the whole Helsing anime dub vs sub thing all over again I find it bloody weird when people born and bred in the UK speak in heavily accented japanese.
I also agree on that- the Russians I know (they speak perfect English but use accents for fun) sound quite different
I mean, that way its more accurate, but i think i have a problem with it because i watched it with subs first and im not used to totally different voices in the dubs
I usually always watch the subbed versions all the time so that’s why when I was watching yuri on ice I watched the subbed version. I think it just depends on what u want.

I thought this review was perfect about Yuri on Ice. I am not someone who is into Yaoi so for me the story line and characters were so awesome. I also don’t really like sport anime’s too much and yet loved it. As someone who has a loving relationship it’s so nice to see one on screen that really reflects a possible and healthy one. I hope people can get past some of the technical issue and yaoi in order to take your review to heart. As an avid watcher of your channel hope you all have much success and continue great videos. Have a happy holiday season may next year be just as awesome. Idk when I will comment again so get it all in there I guess.

@@zoazede2098 BL is an all-encompassing term that includes yaoi, for rebranding purposes. The term yaoi is actually outdated in Japan, it’s just BL now.
@@diamondminer5459 indeed bl is a wide term, but, still, it's not yaoi, since yaoi references or defines anime/mangas that have a strong sexual motive, usually have bad or weak storylines, plain and toxic characters, most people when they say "yaoi" thinks of shonen ai, which is the polar opposite, has no sex motivated plot, beautiful non toxic relationships, interesting characters, and a good or at least decent plot.
Yuri on ice is definitely a spocon shonen ai, since the major plots are the ice skating as a sport (and it's showed very professionally) and the obvious romance between Victor and Yuri, a normal, beautiful, non toxic love, even if it has some erotism it's not even close to yaoi.
@@zoazede2098 First of all, everything I said about it being a new term that encompasses multiple sub genres (ex. Yaoi and Bara, even though the latter’s audience despises the former’s, sparking a separate discussion of society’s hate for feminine tropes and things targeted at girls) still stands. Second of all, way to dig yourself deeper, because in Japan “shounen ai” is an ESPECIALLY outdated and frowned-upon term, strongly associated with pedophilia and age-gap relationships. Third of all, m/m media in Japan has largely been rebranded under the BL label because it’s evolved from its shoujo-oriented roots (“yaoi”, I guess) and its newfound trend of more grounded realism of tackling social issues like homophobia has garnered a sizable male audience. Also, look up research regarding the psychology of “fujoshis” (a term largely used by TERFs and radfems who don’t actually care about gay men), the appeal of m/m romance is more than just sexual for female readers.

I met jerry jewel and josh grelle at anime fest in Dallas. They both were absolutely in love with the show. Josh even has a Makkachin tissue box thing that Victor has he said there’s not even tissues in it. He just likes to cuddle it. Seeing as anime fest was my first ever con and their panel was my first ever panel, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I feel bad for my dad though he was so confused the whole weekend

it's both interesting, and a little weird, that Yuri on ice is a figure skating anime, yet towards the ending credits, we end up seeing the skaters pole dancing at a bar and whatnot XD

I did not know how to say this, but you expressed what I thought. When watching the first few episodes I was anxious that the relationship between victor and yuri could turn toxic like in other shows I've watched before. But thankfully it never did while still being heartwarming and exciting. I wasn't a fan of ice skating before, but now I love it

I love this anime and the animation isn't all that bad ...I love how most of the music goes very well with the skaters skating :). The music is great and lovely, the characters are fun and have real problems but it's a beautiful show in general and very inspiring! :). Yurio cracks me up with his facial expressions and Yuri is so cute and nervous around vickor it's adorable! XD. I love the voice actors for the dubbed, they had some really great people do the voices! :). I am totally excited about it coming out in Febuary...even if I may not have the $$ for it, lol! :). Thank you Robyn for such a fun, entertaining and delightful review about this wonderful anime :). Have a great day and happy anime watchings to you :).

I love your review of Yuri On Ice, Robyn :) I also really liked this show as well, at first I wanted to watch it because I always liked figure skating and one of the reasons why I like this show. Yuri and Victor made me love the show even more, they are both such great characters. Yuri is so cute and Victor is so hot and I love his personality, he's so bubbly lol I love the relationship they have with each other so much! I’m late to the anime community so last year when EVERYONE was talking about this anime, I was first super annoyed by it (because I wasn’t into anime). Then I finally decided to give it a try and after watching the entire thing in less than a day I frickin’ fell in love with this show, and my love for anime has skyrocketed ever since.

I'm glad I checked this series out. I loved all the characters (Phichit is my fave) and to this day, the opening song is the only anime opening that has made me cry. It really does sound like it's telling me to pick myself up and try again after a failure
Can you review Akatsuki no Yona? I recently finished it (first anime I watched!) and LOVED it.
Th is might be because I'm a noob but I don't get what the opening is referencing.
Looking at the Insanimania clips really made me happy of how the originals bubbled in, mainly because of how I helped on January, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me in 2017.

I can so relate to the intro to this review. Great view of one of my favorite shows. My mom even liked and I can hardly ever get her to watch anime with me not matter how good it is. I love the ending too. You should really watch the amv that set's the animation from Welcome to the Madness and other scenes to Pys' Gentleman. That's a good one.
#akibento and Free! I originally watched this anime for the amazing voice actor that is J. Michael Tatum and the fact that it just seemed interesting to me but this actually managed to give me a love for swim. In the first season Haru wasn't too much emotionally, just a guy who reaaaallllyyyyyyy loves water. Like... a lot. Despite that (even though that it did bring for a lot of hilarious moments), I grew to love him and all of the other characters, always wanting the best for them like a super sweet anime mom (who doesn't die in the first episode, thank you very much AOT). The second season brought more to light with Haru emotion wise, even with Makato and Haru about to graduate highschool, the swim club had brought them all so much joy and happiness that Nagissa and Ren continued it (deep down I feel like this is a story of how the most amazing high school swim club came to be but I digress). Throughout the series I gained a love for even the so called rival characters who were honestly just that, except friends who are rivals. With amazing opening and ending songs and animation that of course I sang along to and danced with, this all brings me to the conclusion that I cannot name a possible reason why in some other crazy universe that I wouldn't love this show. (Also, the anime abs don't hurt anyone *Smirk* Just saying). Thanks for your time!

I love this series. I binged it. And I find it funny that several cast members of the English Dub of this series were also in Hetalia...AKA Russia, or Jerry Jewell playing a Russian again. And I love Robyn's Yurio impersonation.

On the topic of the Anime Awards, Yuri on Ice was bound to win at least most of their nominations considering the show ended 2 or 3 weeks before the voting meaning the fandom was at it's peak. While the other large fandoms blew up in spring and summer meaning they had died back down at this point. It's not our fault that Crunchyroll made it so the fans decided the votes and if the show was really that terrible it wouldn't have won regardless.
No it doesn't but you also have to take into account that "most deserving" doesn't mean shit when it comes to fan voting. Yuri on Ice was a decent show that had very good timing for a poorly executed voting system that only gave you about 10 anime total throughout all of the categories. If I remember correctly Mob Psycho only had one nomination and almost all of the categories nominated either YOI, Kabeneri, or Erased. You can't blame a show or a fanbase for that outcome which is where most of the hate comments went when it first went down.

what is Yuri on Ice to me..? This anime is the movie/book series that you grew up with that made you cry when it was over. And now you continue to start the series over and over again because YOU NEED MORE!

I can't believe I didn't know this review was out, I feel so much shame as a YOI fan. Also, so good to know when the dvd will be out, I hope they've cleaned up the animation for it (I've seen some clips online about that)
Having been a figure skater for 12 years, and a competitive figure skater for 5, I was skeptical of and very excited to see a figure skating anime. This is a great anime and I loved seeing my sport so well represented and animated. And it showed what the sport has done for me and a lot of other people I know, grow as a person and overcome our faults, and express emotions we can't word. I highly recommend watching it!
You should do an review on The Ancient Magus Bride. (Note: ITS A BEAUTIFUL ANIME)

I just watched this anime yesterday after learning about it from Anime America. Oh the feelz. I couldn't watch this anime without having to stop it at parts because, as said in Ouran High School, my moe senses went into overdrive.Love this anime hands down. Can't wait for more.

I'm having a battle for first place on my favorite sport anime. Its between Free (1st season) and Yuri on Ice.
Yuri for the same reason Robin-senpai said. Its an anime that shows that you can beat whatever negatives thought appear in your head by working on your goal to be better, with a little help of the love factor. Just not the level of Cristoff. Plus Yuri and Victor's relationship its my goal!
And Free cause its like . . . . go with the flow of who you are and do what you enjoy with your friends!

Reading the English lyrics of Victor's routine gave me a better understanding of his character. He had the music written for home and it really portrays how torn and lonely he was at the beginning of the story.
This anime has been my to watch list for awhile but with winter break coming for me this might achieve my watched list lol. P.s i love that tv shirt design #akibentotshirt
#Akibentoshirt Yuri on Ice is my favorite sports anime. Free! Iwatobi Swim Club is my second favorite. Both sports have been an interest of mine since I was little. I've also recently gotten into Welcome to the Ballroom. I can thank Dancing with the Stars for that.

The thing that happen at the end of ep11 was not put their for "drama" he was considering it at the beginning and it make sense that if (something) did happen he would have done that

As I recall, the controversy surrounding the anime getting all the acclaim from Crunchyroll is because of its popularity. And popularity seems to be a major factor with the entertainment industry these days. Frankly, I can take a sports drama or leave it.

AKIBENTO,sorry if spelled wrong . My favorite sports anime is FREE! The reason I love it is hard to put into words. There's just something that draws me towards it. I guess it's the bonds and struggles between friendship,and how much they deeply care, some without putting it into words. They truly are FREE!
I actually just watched the series yesterday after coming back to it from my super long break between the first and second episode, and I really liked it! Overall, it was a really nice, fun anime and I enjoy it. I’m not a full blown fujoshi but I do like some yaoi anime’s that have become my personal faves. But I ended up backing off from the show for a really long time because of the crunchy roll anime awards shit storm blow up and it messed with my motivation to continue the series. I’ll admit, the series isn’t perfect, no anime is, but it definitely didn’t deserve all the flack it got. It was still an enjoyable show and one of the better 2016 shows and probably really cool for people like me who are figure skating fans.
