One of the greatest Zerbinettas in the entire history of the role. More than anyone else she sings this aria as a sexual experience climaxing in the high E, the voice perfectly capturing the peaks and valleys of ecstasy. Peerless singing.
More than 15 years after, in another production, in another place Edita Gruberova impressived Barcelona with this marvellous opera. She is one of the best sopranos playing Great Theater ever.
This is a quote from New York Times' piece in October 22, 2021 by Anthony Tommasini: The eminent (Karl) Böhm, who had worked closely with the composer, famously commented at the time, “My God, if only Strauss had heard your Zerbinetta!” Complete article is easy to find on the internet. I thought that it was fitting to put it here. I have no opinion in Ms. Gruberova's singing (not qualified) if legendary conductor Karl Böhm had spoken.
Then you are surprised by half the opera audiences and critics of the past fifty years, who have hailed Gruberova as the most astonishing leggero of the late XXth century. Please return to the sad, lonely lair of Mr Opera (or whatever he/she/it/you/they are calling themselves now) and gnash your teeth hopelessly in frustrated despair.
@@jasonhurd4379 I will never understand why we can't have a civilized discussion about theses topics. Why can't you just tell me your view without resorting to being patronising, sarcastic and having an over all rude tone?
@@celibidache1000 Because your initial comment is patently intended to stir up controversy, which you have succeeded admirably in doing. Do not try to pretend that your initial comment was meant innocently, as if it were simply a well-meant and objective description of Gruberova's singing. You are well aware that she is, correctly, considered by audiences and critics alike to be one of the greatest leggeros of all time, yet you come to the comments section of a video of her most successful role and feign 'surprise' that an expert like OperaMyWorld considers her to be 'a good singer'. You have no intention of inspiring a genteel exchange of equally valid opinions. You simply can't stand seeing this fine artist receiving the adulation and homage she deserves, and you have come here expressly to stir up controversy while hiding behind a mask of naïveté and good will. Well, you have achieved your aim. Your malicious intent is transparently obvious, and your injured tone of being unjustly treated is ludicrous and disgusting. Go back to This is Opera!'s lonely, demented world and continue to yearn for leggeros to sound like contraltos and for singers to universally engage in 'girare' and 'scuro', whatever those cryptic and ill-defined terms may mean. You are not fooling anyone, least of all me.
Stefan Boström Madame Heinz I heard her in 1997 Concert in Herodes Atticus in Greece (an open theater) when most singer (including Caballe, Pavarotti, Domingo And Carreras) had sang only with mics! Gruberova sang A Very Long and Great Coloratyra Concert (She was 51 y.o)!!! Her Voice was Huge and Fully audible!!! And her top notes were very loud!!! Of course She is a Good Singer!! She later made some bad choices...but even today SHE CAN SING UP TO HIGH F !! And she is 73!
@@jasonhurd4379 wow, for you to react like that is almost scary. Very paranoid... My question was nothing but a question. I stumbled upon a video on this channel comparing tenors, and was happy to see that he dismissed modern famous tenors in favor of the old school ones. I watched a few more videos, enjoying it, but was surprised at some singers he say are bad. But I am fine to agree to disagree on such topics. However, when I saw this video I was really surprised, as, to my ears, she sound shrill and lacking scuro. Therefore my comment. I am sorry that my question stirred so much in you, and I guess you are not opened to calm discussions.

Fantastica mamma mia
Incredible! Is there a complete recording of that performance? I wish, I would have been there...
RIP LA REGINA PER SEMPRE

👏👏👏👏👏👏
I am surprised that you think EG is a good singer. She is constricted and very wobbly, and her acuti is very, very shrill and unpleasant...
