    I feel like the smartwatch market is saturated with full blown 'watch' type and size devices but no company is actively developing these discreet little bands , which quite frankly are the only choice for hardcore mechanical watch lovers who still want to stay on top of their health. I dont need no fancy ,big screen(keep it monochrome), features and oversized band, just gimme HR,steps,sleep and basic readiness statistics, GPS would also be a plus and refine the device to where it looks miniscule , like a small bracelet and make it last a month in smartwatch mode. I wanna wear my classic analog watch and also am a fan of tracking my runs and looking at my health and i just look dumb wearing two watches but i still do it, because fck it.

    The sleep tracking inaccuracy is definitely a deal breaker for me. I was hoping to get this for sleep and hr tracking since I don’t really need the bells and whistles of more expensive bands…

    With all of your smartwatch tests, which one would you recommend the best when it comes to a smartwatch, with a good heart tracking, sleep tracking, a watch that detects sudden moves or falls? There was a news article a few weeks ago that an Apple watch saved a person's life by detecting someone was having a heart attack and called 911... I don't use iPhone, but Android, so I'm in a search for a "king" watch as good as the Apple.
    Cheers.

    Thanks Rob for making me cut the Vivosmart 5 off the list I put it on days before. This is absolutely no alternative to the mi band 6, and price wise it even becomes ridiculous. The FitBit Luxe is now available for roundabout 110€ und performs better in every way, though I don't know how its oxygen sensor does since you didn't test it. So, a release date of 10th of May for the mi band 7 is rumoured. Let's hope for the best. Also thanks for beeing so quick with testing after the EU product launch.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Yodan! Not sure by heart if the Luxe has an SpO2 sensor, I thought it might not. Where did you hear the 10th of May release date, I am interested ;-) ?

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist Hi Rob! The specs on the fitbit homepage clearly show a SpO2 monitoring for the Luxe, but only over night and not on command, which is probably why this feature can't be tested. And the mi band 7 release rumour I got from some unofficial website that popped up in my regular search for mi band 7 news.

    I know people like to compare it to the Fitbit Charge 5, but the Luxe is a better comparison in terms of size and features. The Luxe is selling for $90 right now in some places.
    So imo, Garmin really dropped the ball with this pricing on this product. Which is a shame because some people actually like the looks of it.

    Top notch content, as always! An unrelated question: Any idea why there a difference between the GT3 and the GT Runner even though they have the same sensor? I prefer the look of the GT3, but I want the most accurate (non-Apple) HR tracking and this leaves me in a bit of a pickle.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon! Good question, and one which I haven't been able to figure out. I think one out of these three is most likely:
      (1) Weight --> the GT Runner is significantly lighter, and might stay in place better
      (2) Firmware ---> I tested the GT Runner later, so firmware might have improved
      (3) Random chance of testing --> Maybe the fit was worse a few days of testing the GT3 for some reason?
      Honestly, I am still unsure though

    I was really hoping the Vivosmart 5 would score well in your tests since I've decided to swear off Fitbit after my experience with the Charge 4 which was ridiculously buggy (and the refurbished replacement unit they sent was even worse), plus their customer support was tragically incompetent and, often times, unintelligible in both written and oral communications (in English)! Oh well... Thanks for another brilliant video all the same.

  • @maxquaini

    Hi Rob, after your review there's been a few firmare update, the device seems to be working pretty fine to me at this point, it would be cool if you would have the time to take a new test...just my 2 cents indeed :)
    I've been comparing the heart rate with a polar chest strap and results were pretty much accurate even with weights (apart biceps curls, where every wrist device seems to be struggling), even the sleep felt on point. I usually wake up at night and while fitbit stop recording my sleep once I woke up, even if I'm sleeping back few more hours (that's happening with all the fitbit devices I have), this little guy nailed it. I would be really curious to see if my personal experience would match a new test with your scientific approach!
    Thank you in advance, in any case:)

  • @MsEgwene

    I wish you went into the body battery feature! For me body battery is very helpful. I have ME/CFS and it seems to help me determine when I feel tired but don't really risk post-exertional malaise vs when ignoring my fatigue will set me back for days or more. I just use it for short walks and household chores, that's my "exercise". It was especially interesting to see my body battery crash completely when I had covid. I'm thinking of upgrading to another tracker, from my vivosmart 4, but would love to know if the body battery function is consistently reliable across Garmin devices and if any competitors have similar measurements. I guess it's just based on HRV, no? I also wonder if sleep quality affects the body battery calculations, because the vivosmart bands seem to be so bad at detecting sleep cycles.
    Your videos are always so informative! I'd love it if they shared some insights relevant to people with chronic disease, instead of just fitness tracking for healthy people. There seems to be little information for us, I expect because people are scared to give medical advice. But there's so much potential for tools like this to help people self-manage their symptoms.
    Any advice on a watch that combines good sleep tracking with a feature similar to body battery would be super welcome!

I've had it for a couple years now and I do still use the body battery function to prevent post exertional malaise and bigger "crashes". • @EliasAlucard
    @EliasAlucard ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I used the Vivosmart 4 for about a year, and I can corroborate the results of the Vivosmart 5, because these are pretty much the results I always got when using it, so I was reluctant about upgrading to the fenix 7X Sapphire Solar, because I was thinking, paying €900 for the same crappy results? Well, the fenix 7 obviously has better results, but it's still significantly worse than Fitbit Sense 2 (which I also bought after looking at TQS reviews), Whoop and Apple devices. That said, the fenix 7 is okay at health stats. The oxygen saturation has gotten much better and the sleep monitoring has also improved a lot. Personally I believe it's an algorithm update that's needed for the fenix 7, but I'm not sure the Vivosmart can improve with an algorithm update. I'm probably gonna buy a Garmin Vivomove Sport just to get better health stats in Garmin Connect, and I'll wear the Vivomove until Garmin corrects the fenix 7. It's just a damn shame that such an expensive Garmin still doesn't hold its own against a cheaper Garmin like the Vivomove.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Franco! Well, I am not sure. I wanted to test this at some point, but never committed to doing this. I think there are some issues with this, for instance:
      (1) Watches and software are not calibrated for this location, and this might throw things off. That doesn't mean that it couldn't be better this way if they were tweaked for the inner part of the wrist/
      (2) People just don't wear watches like this generally, especially the thicker ones. I have found it cumbersome when trying personally, bumping the watches into things
      That all being said, maybe there is a scenario where it does make sense that I haven't thought of. Happy to be convinced

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist The scenario is garmin "rash". A common allergic reaction to the silicon straps they use since years. Many of my friends had that and it can be found thousand times in their online forums. People sometimes try switching arms daily, though it does not solve the problem all that well. Garmin has a left/right arm setting on most watches. I'd hope it changes something.
      I have this allergy issue with Garmin bands and it is very annoying. Even their nylon band caused rashes on my arm. Any cheap alternative Chinese replacement band works without any issue but is low quality and often doesn't even fit the watches without modification. I'd really like to know what is wrong with these bands. I even had their leather ones. They color your skin with the leather color and are NOT vegetable tanned, so basically cheap trash.

    Have been waiting for this review, very very helpful as I was considering selling Fitbit charge5 and buying this Garmin band.. well you have actually saved me a hassle. I will stick to charge 5 for now even that it is far from perfect in sports tracking and my premium is running out in a couple of days.. I do cycle a lot and I use garmin bike computer, hr chest strap, speed and cadence sensors so already in garmin environment, app for a couple of years.. but vivosmart 5 is just disappointing.. Cheers!! Keep the brilliant work!!

    As a data analyst, I have watched many videos comparing Vivosmart 5 and other devices, but none of them gives me the objective numbers that I can rely on. I love your analysis and appreciate that you spent time to collect all that data. I'm going for the Fitbit charge 5.

    • @thanhpham7285
      @thanhpham7285 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@michamotyl7049 it has been 7 months and I'm disappointed. The screen is not as responsive as my previous mi band 4. The "find my phone " feature does not always work. The "touch to pay" feature is limited to certain countries (not my country). And there are redundant features like EDA and ECG which I only use once in a while. To top it of, it does not read Vietnamese-language messages. The sensor and everything in this video is correct though, but there are so many downsides as I mentioned above. I would have bought a mi band or a xiaomi band.

    Awesome that since you've made comparison of heart-rate accuracy, those are now included in all of your videos. Seems we are still missing a killer device that would be superior with both heart-rate as well as sleep tracking. Blood oxyzen sensors seems to be in general mediocre at best compared to the dedicated devices

    For people who doesn't like watches, it seems more and more that the only reliable option is the Fitbit Charge 5. It sucks because of the subscription. I'll wait for an Apple ring. Or it'd be great for apple to make a band.

    In my experience, Charge 5 has terrible sleep tracking. I often wake up at 3 or 4 am and cannot get back to sleep for 2 or 3 hours, but it usually tells me that i have slept through the night and gotten 10.5hrs of sleep, when in reality i have gotten 6. I appreciate the info tho, I had been thinking about getting the vivosmart 5, but am rethinking it now. Thank you.
