This is gorgeous, super impressive for a college short film. The skill shown here is so professional 🥺 I’ve been looking at colleges recently for animation, but most of the affordable ones don’t seem to get their students to a high enough skill level for my tastes. If anyone has any tips on how I can get a good animation education but also be able to pay for it please share, I’m so stuck ahh
If I'm to be 100% I had to learn most of the skills showcased here by myself hehe. I went to a 3D school, so I had to learn 2D animation, drawing, and painting on my own. What I did was focusing on what I want to achieve, have a goal in mind, or a reference that I want to imitate (it doesn't matter if you actually do it or not) the important thing is once you know where you are right now, and where you want to go, all you have to do is do small daily exercises that will level up your skills to get there. Try tackling single topics instead of complex mixes, and I promise if you're consistent you can achieve the results that are in your head. Best of luck!!
@@ManuMercurial I am not studying animation, although it is a dream of mine but I'll stick to just being my hobby. With most careers in college, you have to learn things on your own. Everything is studying and practicing and honing the skills to near perfection. Sure they hand you skills to help you, thats why you're studying but everything is mostly by your own effort. It doesn't matter where you study. So everything you're saying is 100% true. As for the person asking trust on this one :) I'm studying medicine, and colleges usually just tell you some things and then let you fly off, and you decide if you take it or not.
Colleges are just a phase of your entire process! You have to put in a lot of work yourself and might still not end up where your peers end up, but that's simply because they came in with more experience than you. That is fine! What's more important is that you use this opportunity to grow, through your own ambition combined with professional assistance. Don't be too worried about what you see in the college's portfolio. Instead, see if you can get a chance to talk to the professors or alumni to get a better picture. Good luck!
if you want to animate your own shorts i suggest you follow the path I'm planning, study comics and art first. composition, storywriting and comic techniques are all helpful to know to animate an original story. its never too late to start animating tho, so you might as just try before college. although I am not the best one to ask here as I'm still at high school, I'm planning to go somewhere at Italy, if that helps

This was such a beautifully crafted short film. It perfectly illustrates the conflicting feelings one gets when someone who has hurt them dies, especially a parental figure. It is easy to simply hate the person before this, but, when they pass and one is left with the memories, they begin to remember the way things were before. Wonderfully done!

Damn, that was downright stupendous! You have a mesmerizingly fluid style that maximizes the emotion from each transition. My two favorites were the transition of the dad shaking at the funeral to his tears becoming rain on the taxi windshield (a gorgeous way to show how his grief from his wife's passing affected him and his son's lives) and especially EVERYTHING to do with the swing. From the good memories of the father pushing the son forward to try to reach the light of his mom and a healthier headspace, to how he just can reach it in the arc and starts falling back into the darker memories of his father's worst moments, to how in the end he refuses to let them dominate him and runs to the hospital room to CHOOSE to make peace with it all. Utter visual poetry! I came here from your video on working on Lackadaisy after watching the Lackadaisy pilot (which was a fun watch on its own), and you are awesome! Truly appreciate your message Sam. Reading this I'm so very glad what I intended to show with those sequences did reach you! As for your question, going straight into an animation might be a big challenge for all the reasons you saw in the Lackadaisy video. My suggestion would be to team up with an artist to create a comic/webtoon first, and start building an audience around it! That way you can explore a longer story, and focus on the writing part of it, before expanding it to other types of projects like an animated teaser, until it grows enough to be able to crowdfund a fully fledged pilot. That's what I plan to do myself! Wish you the best of luck!!

damn. i don't often cry over animated films, but this... seriously made me shed a couple of tears. especially when you watch this animation right after that video in which you told your story as an animator and artist, and... and now everything here seems to be doubly expressive, emotional and amazing. all the people who have worked on this did a really, really big and beautiful job, did it all with great soul. this is really inspiring. i've been having a huge problem with creativity and art these days, but everything i have learned from you this day has really helped me a little bit, like a sip of the purest water in a relentless heat. it really helped me and, it must be, many other people too. thank you very very much for your huge work from a fourteen year old artist!!
I first saw this around the time when Lackadaisy first came out. I was super intrigued to see what other works you had to offer! This animation, at the time, was incredibly emotional but lacked that punch that I needed to actually cry. It still got stuck in my head though, coming back to me during super random times. It wasn’t until my Grampy passed away that I truly understood why. I can’t relate to this 100%. Nobody in my family are alcoholics, thank god. But it still speaks to me. I unfortunately was never as close with him as I wish I was, and when he passed all I could think about when I found out was how much I missed out on. I can hardly remember his smile, his laugh, the touch of his hand, all of it. Seeing this young man go through the memories of his life, doing his best to find the good in places he just can’t, then eventually stumbling his way back into the hospital room with the little guitar in his hand… I felt that in my soul. I desperately want to go back in time and change things, help him, do anything to make him smile again. To find the good again. But I just can’t. He was a wonderful man. I still miss him. Thank you for working so hard to bring us such a tear-jerking masterpiece.
Daaaamn. Ambitious storytelling for a less than 5 min animation. What stood out to me the most was how creative the transitions are between scenes as well as how dynamic the camera is which is really impressive in the context of 2D animation. Alright, maybe a third thing and then I'll shut up. The color/lighting is really in line with the narrative points of each scene. Seriously nice work.
This short film really touched me. and the animation creativity is amazing! I really admire you, I will continue to learn and will become like you :) You are my motivation, thank you very much ♡
This is a powerful film. It reminded me of the loss of my own father many years ago and of standing in the hospital room as he took his last breath. Good luck and God Bless You in all you do. Your talent and great Heart is apparent in this work.
I'm just reading a book. Jensen Derrick: Language Older than Words. Your language spoke in 70 languages. - I was holding my father's hand when stopped breathing. I'm glad I could. Thanks for the "Memories" what you did not sell but have shared with us, with me.
Came here from the Lackadaisy video. I gotta say, the scene at 3:29 is TRULY IMPRESSIVE. The lighting, the angles, the shadows its all very well drawn! I cant imagine the work you've put into this 4 minute video. Im so happy thst you're now working for the team of Lackadaisy. Truly an inspiration. *You got the job!*
Beautiful. Powerful presence. Using your talent to tell a story that provokes emotion. This really hit home for me as my dad suffered from alcohol addiction. I have felt similar at times after his death to what you portrayed in your animated short film. Thank you for using your talent to normalize those feelings!

Thank you, I was so moved by this beautiful animation. I lost my mom to cancer almost a year ago. Although I need to get rid of clothes, sometimes I look at her old sweatshirts, ready to sell them and move on, but I simply can't. Loss is painful, but it's also strangely beautiful how we allow them to live on through the fingerprints they left on their belongings.
I can’t believe I nearly scrolled away from this quintessential video. Each moment is so beautifully well done, so filled with emotion. This is what art is about. Telling stories and giving meaning to mere colors on a canvas. Invoking emotion and heart into humanity. Never stop what you are doing, never give up on telling these stories. I mean it, genuinely
I watched this short on mute just cuz i wasn’t ready to commit to a video, and yet I still cried. This was beautiful and a very effective story-telling. So powerful
a beautiful example of visual storytelling! The angles, expressions, lighting, EVERYTHING here tells the story! I got chills near the end too! Fantastic job!
Wow I am just.. wow. I'm not crying, you're crying! This is beautiful. Every frame is a work of art. I did not expect this to grip me the way that it has. Alcoholism has affected my family, so maybe that made it hit a little harder, but I could FEEL the ups and downs the young man went through. The funeral scene was almost too much, I loved it. I don't know enough to give any honest critiques, but those lighting transitions are astounding. You should feel proud of what you've accomplished in this film, I don't know what else to say. I just started with art at the age of 31 (save for what I've done in high school, but I barely count that). You uploaded your painting tutorial a day prior to me starting research, so thankfully TH-cam's algorithm pointed me your way. I've referred back to that tutorial several times while working on my first pieces, but didn't realize you uploaded your short film until now. Thank you Manu, so much, on multiple fronts.
Thank you Treed, this comment really means a lot. Thanks for checking out my content since day 1 on YT, hopefully it keeps living up to your expectations
I don't know if it's the way you sold the story or the incredible craftsmanship shown in the composition that made me shed the first tear. Incredible work.
This has become one of my favorite, if not the favorite, short animation. The transitions from one scene, one emotional state to the next are beautiful. The color schemes, light, and shadow are so fitting of each scene. And of course, the story and how the boy processes it all were presented so well.
I can't remember the last time I teared up from a film, excellent work. I came here from your newest video and I related to that video as a 21 year old artist feeling the same things.
saw your incredible work on Lackadaisy and came over to see the film that got you the job - I'm blown away (and also sobbing but that's beside the point) - it might seem simple but I know pulling this together was anything but. The raw emotion this invokes is powerful, the message it's delivering is powerful, and there are soo many of us - too many of us - who relate to a life or relationships like this extremely personally. I'm still crying and had to get tissues for my nose.... Amazing work 💞
Man I’m tearing up. I lost my mom and my dad was my anchor through it. He’s my tough giant of a hero and when he eventually passes on I know my parents will finally be together again.
This was so lovely! I lived this. My mom died when I was 11, and my dad was never the same. We were a happy family until everything changed, and we weren't. This was beautifully crafted. Thank you .
Brings back memories of my own late father. He was an angry, impatient, short-tempered man who drove away everyone who ever loved him, including his second wife, with his verbal abuse. He died completely alone. I spent a lot of my childhood terrified of him. He was not a very good father at all. And I know the fact that none of his four kids were ever all that close to him hurt him and I also know that he brought that on himself. I know all this, and I still love him, and miss him so much. Thanks for helping me remember that.
I watched this a few months after it came out by myself with the family ipad (bcz at the time i didnt have my own gadget) and i literally cried so much after watching it because of how touching it was, and i still came back to watch it over and over again and yet it srill manages to make me burst out in tears
This animation really captured the feelings well of being conflicted when someone who has hurt you dies. But also the beauty in being able to let go of the more painful aspects to maintain those happier memories of them instead.
Recently stumbled across a CSP tutorial you did for grphixly...which lead me here. This is such a beautiful and inspiring work of art. It really resonates. Also, as someone who is starting the animator journey it helps reaffirm that one person can do something amazing. Thank you!
Omg I cried twice to this this is so beautiful and sad. I interpret this as somebody who has been hurt and had bad memories but also good memories with their father and decided to make peace with his father. I watched the video on how you "failed at art" and its so amazing how you where able to make this despite failing out of hard work and passion. This might be one of my fav short animations.
The swing scene was a masterpiece, how the main character swang between memories, letting himself be dragged as he progressively dives deeper into painful memories, just wow
Man, it so resonates with me, I literally didn’t ever felt like this, literally crying and desperate, and other mix of feeling stuff, this story is so real. Thank you the author who created this
I'm really happy to cry over it..Consider my tears, this is a high assessment of your work, both visual and embedded meaning Good luck to you in the future..)
It's frankly surprising how this short immediately made me cry The opening alone was so strong that my eyes start to tear up. I was hoping that somewhere within the short it'll stop but no, it just keep going refusing me the time to not cry
OH GOD. I found this video by searching for animation tutorials since I started learning animating but damn. This is so cool, the story, the visuals....
I lost my father like this in 2015, and this short-animated film reminded me of my lost father again. May all fathers be well. My only request to those who have fathers, respect and take care of your father while you have time. Because once he's gone, you won't even get that chance. Not even once!! 💔🥀
I came from ur recent vid and i finally understand why this film won. I am a sucker for dramas actually and making me cry is one of my criteria that a story is good. I did cry, but it wasnt like that my intense crying that i really want to burst. This is the kind of cry that is continuous and my heart is so filled with melancholy. It's amazing because there are really no words at the whole film but the sudden shifts of perspective and color, the music and the animation-- it felt like i was really there, yknow that kind of vr thing feels? Every passing memory was like a series of wind slapping me on the face that kept me on crying. It was lonely and very sad feeling. I felt empty actually after watching this, i mean i know it ended in a good mark and i know it might just be a fictional character, but i wonder how is the mc was feeling after all of this.
What I tried to convey with the end is, even thought the mc might not be able to completely forgive his dad for the damage and neglect he did, he reached a 'different' kind of forgiveness. When you understand the person that hurt you so well, that you also understand there's nothing to forgive. I hope he achieved peace! Thank you for your kind words!!
"Sometimes I wish I could relive moments from my past. Maya tells me I do, and I know what she means. Like the rush of parkour on rooftops, feeling alive with every leap. Or the thrill of discovering animation, unlocking a power within me I never knew existed. But there are moments I'd rather not relive. Like finding those hidden pictures and letters, revealing a secret my dad kept from my mom. I wish I'd never told her; their argument that day still haunts me. She stormed out, got into a car accident, and... she was gone the next day. My dad followed soon after. In the aftermath, I realized you never truly know how much someone means to you until they're gone. Death is inevitable, but it's hard to accept. I still listen to my mom's guitar music, remembering the times I played alongside her. But after she passed, I couldn't bear to play anymore. I had to let it go. I've learned to never let anger blind me to the love of those around me. I'd give anything to talk to my mom again, both my mom and dad died on this same bed I’m laying on right now ,death may have won in this world but at least I’ll get to see my mom again
..... The saddest thing is no one is to blame because everyone is experiencing everything for the first time. His parents experiencing parenthood for the first time. And him experiencing grief for the first time and so forth. We don't learn this from school so we must go through it to the best way we can.

Thank you for working so hard to bring us such a tear-jerking masterpiece.
This was incredible. No wonder you and your team won first place.
Seriously nice work.
no no, keep going Thanks so much Mustache Twiddler, I really appreciate you taking the time to write this, and thank you for watching it!!
This short film really touched me.
and the animation creativity is amazing! I really admire you, I will continue to learn and will become like you :) You are my motivation, thank you very much ♡
Thank you Bunnirell, you are my motivation too! Thank you for taking the time to write this!
This is a powerful film. It reminded me of the loss of my own father many years ago and of standing in the hospital room as he took his last breath. Good luck and God Bless You in all you do. Your talent and great Heart is apparent in this work.
Im not crying you are! :') It was a good film I can see how much effort was put into the film heart and soul good job!
Thanks BalloonsDraws, happy to hear you enjoyed it!
I'm just reading a book. Jensen Derrick: Language Older than Words. Your language spoke in 70 languages. - I was holding my father's hand when stopped breathing. I'm glad I could. Thanks for the "Memories" what you did not sell but have shared with us, with me.
Thank you for your kind words Mind EGY, wish you all the best!
This is just unbelievable that such a good work has less then 1k views! Great job guys, keep up going like this!
Thank you Zappy Ken, I appreciate you watching it, enjoying it and taking the time to comment. That means it accomplished its goal
You made me cry, i don't know how but you did it, you hit the spot.
Dude you just killed it
It is too good awesome, keep it bro, love you ❤ and love your work❤
I watched this short on mute just cuz i wasn’t ready to commit to a video, and yet I still cried. This was beautiful and a very effective story-telling. So powerful
It's a really GOOD ART STYLE I LOVE THE ART STYLE SOUNDS EVERYTHING. Can't wait to know the story, no doubt it will be AWESOME.
left me in tears
a beautiful example of visual storytelling! The angles, expressions, lighting, EVERYTHING here tells the story! I got chills near the end too! Fantastic job!
Thank you so very much Icemaster. Your comment is incredibly encouraging. I appreciate you watching the video!!
Absolutely and overwhelmingly beautiful.
Thank you for the huge compliments Mormyrus
This has become one of my favorite, if not the favorite, short animation. The transitions from one scene, one emotional state to the next are beautiful. The color schemes, light, and shadow are so fitting of each scene. And of course, the story and how the boy processes it all were presented so well.
Truly beautiful to see, heartfelt story. I just lost my dad. Memories that all I got now. Thank you for this gift! 🙏🏾
I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for taking the time to watch it and your kind words. Truly appreciate it!
@@ManuMercurial Thank you and you are truly welcome! 🙏🏾
a good animation like this always makes me cry. not only bc of the story but also bc of all the love that is put into every single frame by artists
I can't remember the last time I teared up from a film, excellent work. I came here from your newest video and I related to that video as a 21 year old artist feeling the same things.
ngl this made me cry for 30 minutes gotta love the animation though
That made me cry, thanks for this beautiful moment
Every award was well deserved! Great short!
That was wonderful. Visuals, music and story.
Incredibly great animation!
Movements and rotations are excellent. I like it very much🤩
This movie really moved me and made me shed a tear. I really liked the editing and the special transition between the different scenes
Absolutely mesmerizing. The shots done with the idea of different types of light was so well done. Loved it.
saw your incredible work on Lackadaisy and came over to see the film that got you the job - I'm blown away (and also sobbing but that's beside the point) - it might seem simple but I know pulling this together was anything but. The raw emotion this invokes is powerful, the message it's delivering is powerful, and there are soo many of us - too many of us - who relate to a life or relationships like this extremely personally. I'm still crying and had to get tissues for my nose....
Amazing work 💞
Thank you so much for your kind words Ashley! This is the biggest compliment
Man I’m tearing up. I lost my mom and my dad was my anchor through it. He’s my tough giant of a hero and when he eventually passes on I know my parents will finally be together again.
I don't know till now that , five minutes is enough to make a man cry 😢
It hit direct into My heart ❤
This is incredible. I should have known this would make me cry. Amazing work and beautifully composed all around
This is amazing in all parts, story, technical achievement, and cinematography.
So very glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for your kind words!!
@@ManuMercurial you are very humble, thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you for this saw emotional story
this can make anyone cry, so sad 😢 really awesome vid, keep up with the amazing work!
This was so lovely! I lived this. My mom died when I was 11, and my dad was never the same. We were a happy family until everything changed, and we weren't. This was beautifully crafted. Thank you .
How beautiful!
Thank you so very much Nathanael! Truly appreciate it! 🙇🙇🙇
I watched this a few months after it came out by myself with the family ipad (bcz at the time i didnt have my own gadget) and i literally cried so much after watching it because of how touching it was, and i still came back to watch it over and over again and yet it srill manages to make me burst out in tears
this is so wholesome, it def deserves more views :(
Awwh, my heart is melting...🥺🦋💕💖
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
Thank you!
Welcome aboard! Wish you the best of luck in your journey RFTM. Let's get itttt!! 💪
Never fails to make me cry, every single time i watch it
A brave video, you should never give up.😌
this should be seen by as many people as possible.. Good job
Thanks for creating such beautiful animation! You are amazing!
And the animation is beautiful I really love the transitions its crazy how this was made in 2d!
man this made me cry, it was so emotional for me, great animation and i mean this
Wow! This is stupendous. The transitions are top notch. I'm less than halfway through and my eyes are welling up. ❤ Beautiful storytelling.
Beautiful animation, story.. everything!!! Amazing project!
Thank you the author who created this
Ok, i'm crying
Beautiful video and story, thanks for the feelings, i needed it
This deserves sooo much more attention this was beautiful and well constructed.
Thanks for taking the time to watch it Spencer! Truly appreciate it
When the glasses were breaking, that was my favorite brilliant scenes.
espectacular Manu!
This is absolutely beautiful😭😭😭😭 I’m crying over how wonderful this is❤
this is unbelievably beautiful and touching
I'm really happy to cry over it..Consider my tears, this is a high assessment of your work, both visual and embedded meaning
Good luck to you in the future..)
Absolutely stunning beautiful captured every moment
That was beautiful, so well done. I did shed tears
It's frankly surprising how this short immediately made me cry
The opening alone was so strong that my eyes start to tear up.
Really a great work guys. Excellent
I'm in tears, this was beautiful, stunning work.
The symbolism in this masterpiece is CRAZY.
Simple story, sad music, best lighting, good animation, epic
Nice creativity splattered all around this animation. Great job!
I can’t help it but seeing Omni Man in his dad 😁
This is beyond amazing🥺👏
Thank you for your kind words Annie, so happy you got to enjoy it!
Brilliantly executed, through and through.
Thank you RADimation! Glad you enjoyed it!
damn. This is hearttouching.. so deep. it's not just about the creation you make.. the whole story is amazing...
