Kind of funny to see tiurs (this name is specifically for males, but is what they are generally known as in Norway) in a zoo! Not that I've ever seen a wild one, but they are a national treasure ;)
Omg. I'm from the UK, these birds are famous here, mostly because of the whisky named after them. They're mostly resident here in Scotland but can be found across Eurasia as far as Russia and Mongolia. They're not endangered in conservation status here in their natural habitat, only from humans shooting the hell out of them in captive managed land where they're bred on moorlands just to be shot at. Maybe they're rare in the US but that's because it's a different continent far from their natural habitat.

Northern Europe and Asia, mostly. There are some further south in Europe but you mostly find them in the Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia area.

Imprinting is not a real thing. Chicks will follow a non-threatening giant anywhere, but they aren't gonna just forget how to bird.
From most of the species I've seen at these zoo's. They don't seem to have any good parenting skills. Makes me wonder how they got this far.
