@Lolly Palooza I too made these flat pen bookmarks 5 years ago and had the same worry about the outer plastic case after removing the refills. I have saved them for some further crafting with them. Although I haven't done anything yet with them yet. Ideas I had was using them around an empty bean can Or toilet roll to create pen stands or pencil/ marker/ stationery stand. I am from India. We used to get plain refills once upon a time but now we either get them in fused casing or in narrow straight barrels where you can remove the top and bottom end. No springs in them! The top end is triangular and can be turned into an eating along with beads! I did use the top part by inserting them in plastic waterbottles as sippers for birds but birds in India are not familiar with feeders! So that failed!
@Lolly Palooza in the vertical flat pen paper clip, I'd like to suggest something from what I saw in another crafter's video on YT. Instead of making a slit for the clip at the back, she made it on the fold. She used two layers of card paper and fixed the clip on the inner folded card, but you can do in this too. Insert the clip through the slit in the fold the same way leaving the longer side out/ at the back) and the shorter side inside the folder card paper. Keep the rounded end slightly protruding through the hole and insert ribbon/lace/ cord through it before sticking the pin down. Then push the clip flush with the fold and glue it all in making sure you put some glue on the slit as well. You can tie the ribbon into a bow of just make a knot and add a dab of glue to keep it in place. The ribbon helps to remove the pen clip when needed and, also to identify it's location. I hope this helps
I hot glued the metal tip on a glue bottle for fussy glueing. Another tip I superglued a needle in to make a small hole punch. By filing the tips down and sharpening them I made various sizes of hole punches. Not as easy as the store bought ones, but a lot cheaper! Tips could be used as tiny Santa or snowman hats, springs as arms and legs... The barrel could be used as a holder for diy peg stamps, a center holding rod for washi tape or hot glued together to make pen holders, drawed dividers or maybe a box with a lid. Use the springs as hinges on the lid. Think building like with legos or lincoln logs (if you are old enough to know what they are.) Love from Sweden.
Hi Lolly: What a great idea! Will start making some for my journals and DIY TNs. Just a note: you can easily snip off the end of the pen where there’s no ink. That way, you don’t have to worry about the clips. You can also make shorter pens. Love that you picked up the uke. Really a fun instrument. Had a soprano then switched to a concert. Let us know how it’s going. Thank you for all your wonderful videos and tips. 💜😎🇺🇸

Love, love this idea. You are great at explaining things and I love how they turned out. I have an idea for the remainder of the pen when you have taken the ink part out. You could glue the shells together, and make them as part of a bug house for the garden, that way it is being used and not going into landfills. The other thing you could do is cut them in half lengthways and use them as the edging of the journal covers, another idea is to decoupage them, then cut them up into bead size and use them as journal dangles, the same with part of the lid, then the end bit you could use as a tassel topper.
I'm going to make these now. I have dozens of pens from advertisers & promotions that I now have a use for. I want to add how much I enjoy & learn from watching your thought process while making your videos. Instead of everything being "ready to go", you allow us to learn & be inspired by your "let's try this" approach. Thank you for sharing your time and talents.
Natasha from Treasure books has a tutorial called Binding journals with empty pen barrels 😊 they look pretty cool. So I'm going to make a flat pen and then decorate the empty barrel to use when I need it 😊 2 awesome tutorials found back.to back 😊😊
Sorry. I just saw your comment. Yes, I saw that she has that video. :) Just a heads up -- TH-cam noticed that you put a period and then no space (you wrote "back.to back") and it registers that as a website, such as a dot com. So TH-cam put your comment in my spam folder instead of posting it.
@@LollyPalooza all good. Not often you get a reply 😊 thanks for the heads up, I'll be mindful of where my podgy thumbs go while writing lol, and to read the message properly before sending 😊 I've recently found one of those pens that has the 4 colours in it, I'll be pulling that apart at some stage 😁 TFS your tutorial and have a great day.
We did these flat pens with ribbon back in 1983 for our highschool graduating class yearbooks. I doubt the kiddos now adays even get year books or have their classmates sign them. Betty Longshore Betty or anyone-miss Lolly is a enabler! Lol! I am raiding my husbands office supplies. The casing that holds the ink, does it need to be flat? Or rip out the ink from a Bic pen? I know not to have the big thing on the end. That is what my husband has, and it’s too big and will not work. So it has to be flat? Or can it be round like a Bic Pen? I have made these with dollar tree pens. Put green eyelash trim on the bird house pen the same as you did on the other paperclip. Thank you for doing this video. ☺
Your videos are so well explained and demonstrated that they are easy to follow. I love this idea and will use it to add another dimension to my junk journals. Thank you!!!
This is so cool! About the lace at the top; if you will put it on with the grain the same direction as the pen, (opposite of what you did on the first one) it will be stiffer to stand up. I love this idea! Hugs!
I love this idea. On the fairy door one I wanted you to sandwich the bookmark in between the button and backing for some stability. I wouldn't add more beads but maybe a dangling ribbon. I love your creative process! And I must have that pink matt! ❤🤓
Thank you for giving me a great idea for the promotional pens people are constantly giving my husband at work - we're both pen snobs but I feel bad just tossing them. I'm pretty sure the plastic components are recyclable, and the springs can be used for other crafts (think butterfly antennae, etc.)

I like these pens too! I can clip one to my purse notepad. That makes it even better. I loom knit and so I use the empty barrel with yarn through it to loop onto my loom. I love this idea!!!! I will be making some of these! A couple years ago i bought some gel pens by laneco. It came with 100 pens and 100 refills for around $20. The refills are a bit thicker but smooth top to bottom and i prefer fun ink in my planners and journals. Thank you for this lovely idea! I'm subscribing today!!!
Lolly Palooza In more detail, you'd use the hook in place of the ink cartridge, so you can "click" the hook out. no waste of the spring or any part of that shaft. I loooooooove your idea of the flat journal pens!!!!!?
Just found you and that's a great tutorial; but also have to tell you I love the way you did the crafter's rendition of the dog's 'look, squirrel'! Cracked me up and I do that too. And now you have me wondering how to use the top of those pens as well, lol. Liked and subbed :)
I know this was 3 years ago...and I am sure others have commented that Amazon has pen refills...$14 for 100. Love this idea! My sister does mixed Media Art...(gel printing) I sent her the video! It would be perfect for her artwork!
This is super cute! The refills you are using you can buy on wish for super cheap (you can even get gel pen refills If you want to make coloured) Also was just thinking for the little fairy door flat pen, because it sticks up you could make a path on the front cover of whatever book you are using it on and do the front like a forest with the path leading to the fairy door or a little fairy village with the path leading to the door etc
YAY! I love hearing that. Welcome to my channel, and I hope you do try more ideas now! If you are on Facebook, I'm there, too facebook.com/LollyPalooza
It's not particularly comfortable, and you definitely won't be able to use it if you usually wrap your fingers around your pen. The idea for this pen is convenience; it's a convenient way to carry a pen.
I love this!! thank you!! I would add making a flat "cap" for the pen, slightly bigger to fit over the pen. You may have talked about it in another video. I will have to go back and watch them all!!
Really interesting idea! I know what You mean about the pens & refills though. I'll have to do a little research & get back to You for over here (UK & Europe)
I was at a thrift store recently and found a large amount of empty pen cases (no ink) that had been donated. I couldn't help but wonder what the donor had done with the inks. :)
Oh Wow! Is that what gave the idea for these? Unless You saw them after You uploaded this, in which case then We all know what They did with the inks :) Everyone will start doing them now! See, I was gonna look online to order refills but when You shop online You really never know what You're gonna get until it arrives with this kind of thing. Pics on here can be so deceiving!
First i have seen...excellent idea...never would have thought of something like that...they have the pen refills on joom...very inexpensive you just have to wait a few weeks to get them
Wow wow wow wow that it's just amazing thank you very much I was wondering if there was a flat pin you could buy or a flat pencil I was going to give it to my friend to put in her journal. Thank you again you are amazing
Hello, again Lolly. Cute idea. I had been wondering just how or what I could use for my ink refills in my Take-a-Lone-Journal. I will try this. Thank you so much.
This is pretty inventive, thanks for sharing.. :) but how do you find the time? I had a day off today, had a plumber scheduled, carpets cleaned, moved furniture, had to vacuum all the rooms, go to the store & up again at 4am...
Very clever. Those would be great for in bibles. Along with paper crafts I am a miniaturist. I build doll houses. I also create many items for accessories. My problem was reversed...what to do with the ink. Save those pen parts. I know you will need them. Thank you for sharing.
I'm not sure what you mean by what type. Scor Tape is the type. I carry the 1/4" in my shop: www.etsy.com/listing/739638546/scor-tape-roll-14-by-27-yards but for this it's more convenient to go wider, such as the 1/2" amzn.to/2PdmJJA
Miss Lolly you are a enabler! Lol! 😂 I am raiding my husbands office supplies. The casing that holds the ink, does it need to be flat? Or rip out the ink from a Bic pen? Lilly have you looked on Amazon for your pen refills, they have a lot of pen refills. Or check Office Depot, staples. Good Luck! I just love watching your videos, you have gave me some ideas for some crafts that I am thinking of doing. Keep it up.
It has been awhile -- I am not sure if I looked there. The majority of comments were about where to get the most CHEAP ink refills, but personally I don't want to get the cheapest, but great quality at an affordable price. :) I don't want to go through all that work of making these and have them not write well. :) Thanks for watching.
I'm not sure I'd want to take the time to cut them, and they wouldn't be strong enough to hold charms. However, you could put a spring down on a charm. You could also stretch the spring out, and use it as an embellishment sticking out from a design. I also made a zombie doll and had springs sticking out of him
Brilliant idea! Love it! About your nail problem and pulling off the paper from the tape? I've seen numerous crafters use an exacto knife to get it started. Also, you asked for ideas for the rest of the pen. The spring part - I saw someone making paper clip sangles and she wrapped wire several times, which looks like a spring, then slid it to the rounded end of the paper clip, added a bigger jump ring and then attached beads and charms to that! The rest of the pen, its late and I'm tired but how about wrapping with florist tape or such and placing a flower in. If you have real flowers and it'll go in water then something waterproof. Then have them available for the rest of the boquet. Kinda sounds lame but I'll think on it! Love your flat pen idea, brilliant☺
great ideas. Yes, about tape -- I have sometimes used one of those paper-piercing tools. My first inclination is to try my fingernail without thinking. :) I think I saw that same video about wrapping wire around a paper clip. I loved it. Flower pens -- whatever we use would have to be light weight, or the pen would be pretty top heavy. It's pretty light. Thanks for all the ideas and discussion.
We have several comments already for where to buy ink refills. Thank you.

thank you for sharing. Ribbon sounds lovely! Ooh -- or lace trim!
This is such a lovely idea. The springs can be used to wrap around a wire, say a phone charger to prevent it from twisting and breaking.
ah! Great idea!
Usually make these with wedding invitation papers, once done they are enclosed with a the card and gift.
I close it with the tape or glue and put the edge in to a circle punch to make the pen part round rather than the point but.

These are awesome - did one paper clip direction end up working better than the other?
No, they both work well. I do think the vertical clip might be ever so slightly easier to use?
Those are super awesome! Thanks so much for sharing.
thanks a bunch!
New sub. Now I’m hooked! I only really make greeting cards however now I’m going to expand my crafting...thank you for the inspiration!
YAY! I love hearing that. Welcome to my channel, and I hope you do try more ideas now! If you are on Facebook, I'm there, too facebook.com/LollyPalooza
Liked these they are very cute.
thanks :)
What an awesome idea!! L9ve these.Tfs Hugs and blessings Donna
thank you. Having fun with them!
Squirrel! LOL though your ADD moment did prompt some good suggestions. Creative Blessings!
yes! Lots of comments coming!
These are gorgeous! !! Love love it. You can get just the refill on aliexpress. Or try amazon. We get these locally in India for real cheap. Tfs
thank you. Found some refills!
Loved your tutorial!!! Beautiful and brilliant !!!!!
thank you. They are super handy!
So cute. Could you cut off the top of the ink barrel to allow more room for decorating? Tfs. God bless.
as long as there is no liquid in that tip. Not even that clear liquid above the ink.
LOOOOOOOVE the "Paper Clip Pen" !!! Sooooo clever AND handy for ANY type of pad for taking notes-TFS :D
We could make a pen to match a pad that we gift to someone
I'm loving this idea, but how comfortable is the pen to use?
It's not particularly comfortable, and you definitely won't be able to use it if you usually wrap your fingers around your pen. The idea for this pen is convenience; it's a convenient way to carry a pen.
I love this!! thank you!! I would add making a flat "cap" for the pen, slightly bigger to fit over the pen. You may have talked about it in another video. I will have to go back and watch them all!!
No, I didn't discuss a cap. :) Hope you find one to work.
Lolly Palooza I was going to make one out of paper, like the body of the pen, just a little bigger so the pen will slide down inside it.
You could probably use the pen shells as a bead core, if you can cut them. Add a nice charm to a journal.
yup! Thanks for watching
Look on wish or Ali express they had bulk smile 😊 this is so nice TFS TFS
thank you
May I ask what is your glue your using....I saw e6000. What is the clear bottle one??? I love this!!
I use Fabri-Tac for gluing any fabric or lace to paper or other fabrics amzn.to/2EXR4qr
First i have seen...excellent idea...never would have thought of something like that...they have the pen refills on joom...very inexpensive you just have to wait a few weeks to get them
Never heard of it! Thanks
Such a good idea. Also really cute. Tfs
thank you for watching :)
So cute. I love your videos ❤️😍
thank you very much :)
Wow wow wow wow that it's just amazing thank you very much I was wondering if there was a flat pin you could buy or a flat pencil I was going to give it to my friend to put in her journal. Thank you again you are amazing
glad to help! :)
Hello, again Lolly. Cute idea. I had been wondering just how or what I could use for my ink refills in my Take-a-Lone-Journal. I will try this. Thank you so much.
great! :)
This is pretty inventive, thanks for sharing.. :) but how do you find the time? I had a day off today, had a plumber scheduled, carpets cleaned, moved furniture, had to vacuum all the rooms, go to the store & up again at 4am...
less housework? :)
Very clever. Those would be great for in bibles. Along with paper crafts I am a miniaturist. I build doll houses. I also create many items for accessories. My problem was reversed...what to do with the ink. Save those pen parts. I know you will need them. Thank you for sharing.
Fun! Miniatures amaze me!
Wonder if AliExpress would have them? They do have packages of pens at the dollar store you could take apart and use as well.
probably would :)
Very interesting. I've seen bulk pens on Amazon at a decent price. Keep up your BEAUTIFUL work!!
thank you so much!
Love the paper idea for the pen. What type of score tape and where do you purchase it?
I'm not sure what you mean by what type. Scor Tape is the type. I carry the 1/4" in my shop: www.etsy.com/listing/739638546/scor-tape-roll-14-by-27-yards but for this it's more convenient to go wider, such as the 1/2" amzn.to/2PdmJJA
Beautiful job.
thank you so much!
This is great! I bought my daughter 50? 100? (Idk) refills a couple years ago, and she may have used 5. I need to raid her stash 😆😁😊
Tfs! xo
yes, you do!
Miss Lolly you are a enabler! Lol! 😂
Miss Molly I so love your videos. You crack me up when you change the subject! I do the same! Lol!😂
Help...♥️🌹💯‼️
Some of the ink refills have tiny little "wings" toward the end. That's okay --- turn them so they'll go flat along the paper.
Just came across this, Love your attitude. You must have been a pre-school teacher..haha..Good video..
hee hee. No, I am an R.N. :)
Hello from Brazil.... i loved the vídeo.. thanks
Hello! Thank you for watching
Those springs would make cute hair on a country or primitive doll.
I made a zombie doll once and used springs
Just Subscribed !! An idea for recycling springs, could we cut them individual rings for charms ? Love your pens 🤗👍
I'm not sure I'd want to take the time to cut them, and they wouldn't be strong enough to hold charms. However, you could put a spring down on a charm. You could also stretch the spring out, and use it as an embellishment sticking out from a design. I also made a zombie doll and had springs sticking out of him
Lolly Palooza thank you for taking time to reply to me. I’m going but watching your videos I haven’t seen yet. Love your work 👍🤗
these are cute. are the difficult to write with ? don't think at all squished up at the tip where they're holding them with your pencil grip
I did show in my other flat pen tutorial that it would be hard to hold for people who wrap their thumbs around their fingers when holding pens
What a great idea!!! Maybe pens from dollar tree?
as long as they write well. They might not have enough ink in each refill? Wouldn't want the project to run out of ink too soon
I buy my pens at dollar tree and I also use glue instead of tape. Love your pens
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for all the ideas and discussion.
love your pens. Please... what kind of scissors do you use to fussy cut?
They are called Cutter Bee. amzn.to/2jMIS0V I use them only for fussy cutting and fine detail, so as to keep them sharp.
