Brilliant how Spielberg doesn't give us a good look at the raptors until one of them is right in Muldoon's face. Just like how we don't see the Rex until the fences are off - he never shows us the predatory dinosaurs in any circumstance where the humans are in still in control. Which leaves a more menacing impression on the audience.
I think that the fact special effects of that level were very expensive in the 90's, played a big part in the decision of not showing it yet. But yeah, it also converged with narrative choices in order to give more fuel to imaginary mind instead of giving us everything in the face, unlike nowadays dummy blockbusters.
Showing less is plenty. We saw how fast they are in the beginning. We saw how strong they are and how tolerate they are to electricity. We know they're deadly because one man was brutally killed. This scene shows that there are more than one of them and Muldoon mentions how smart they are. All we needed to see is how they hunt and trap their prey.

@@mquiroz90 In the novel, Malcolm and Hammond were constantly fighting because Malcolm correctly deduced the entire park was destined for failure. Also, in the novel, Hammond and Muldoon barely got along. They also had several fights when they found out Nedry had stolen a Jeep and taken off with the dino embryos.
It's a little moment but I love that Grant rushes up to shake Muldoon's hand and introduce himself so he can ask the questions he's been waiting his whole life to have answered.
I know, I love that too. It’s a great little background character moment that gets overlooked. A bit like the lawyer’s “Who, me?” hand wave on the helicopter, just before the score kicks in. Another very underrated piece of acting, imo.
And the way he smiles like a kid and waves Ellie over to come talk to him too and she’s like nah nah I came here for the botany stuff those things are all you babe💀🤣
"They never attack the same place twice...They remember." That seriously gave me chills. Not only were the raptors ferocious hunters, but they were able to strategize among each other. Most animals who hunt in packs usually rely on numbers to overcome prey, but the raptors rely on finding weaknesses to take down their prey.

+1Morey You and I must have watched a different video than this one. Because I saw a hunter that was downright disturbed by how dangerous, predatory and deadly something was. To the point where he elevates it above anything else he's hunted; and because Muldoon wasn't a serial killer, that precludes humans. He's saying right there in this scene that the only thing more capable of complex behavior and is more dangerous is a human - and likely only a human with a tool and an ability and will to use it. Muldoon is basically like the dug in, entrenched commander that has seen what the enemy is capable of and respects them for it. He still wants to kill the enemy because they're dangerous and they want to kill him. No matter how advanced they are, they're still driven on instinct. In a raptor, them seeing you and murdering you just so they can eat your liver is a normal/standard behavioral baseline. In humans, that's a mental disease if someone did that to another sapient, living, being. I'd argue Muldoon has more respect than even whats-his-name from Jurassic World where he's trying to train them like a fucking dog or a dolphin. Yes, it shows how advanced, intelligence-wise, raptors are... It's also ignoring what they are - a killing machine that _ISN'T_ a domesticated animal. At least he was kinda doing it begrudgingly while the other asshole wanted to literally make them the new service dog and sell them. Still, that's not respecting what the raptors are in the Jurassic Park universe. Not at all.
Muldoon is a great subversion of the classic movie mercenary. He's not naive and he's not arrogant. He knew just how dangerous the raptors were and knew they had to be stopped. It wasn't a game to him, it was life and death. In the end, he did everything right, he only lost due to lack of knowledge. He even tipped his hat to the Raptors, knowing they had beaten him fair and square. If he had more time to talk with Grant he would have known their hunting strategy and probably would have won.
That's why Muldoon is one of my favorite JP characters in the entire series. He's a practical man who used his knowledge well. He was also right about how dangerous the raptors were.
Yeah actually i'm pretty sure the only reason he puts himself in such a bad position as to potentially be injured or killed is to cover & protect other people in a situation where more lives than his own are on the line. Also i seem to recall they actually said [in the book?] that they originally made the dinosaurs, raptors in particular, as close to their genetic origins as possible, but they were so smart they had to dumb them down on a genetic level so they would stop escaping everything they tried to contain them with!
Well the rex eventually comes for the goat. It must have had a fairly large paddock and was probably on the other side when the goat was first brought up.

It sure is immersive. Yet when you think about it, how are the three animals supposed to move with all of that vegetation let alone get enough space with the paddock being so tiny? It all looks cramped as heck. Realism isn’t exactly the highest priority of these setups, lol.
1:04 - Watch Hammond's face carefully. He never takes his eyes off Grant. He's watching for something. And his faces twitches into the faintest of smile. For Grant isn't watching in horror as Hammond probably feared - but enraptured fascination! **Edit** - Also consider that later restaurant scene, in which a humbled Hammond explained how his first attraction was a Flea Circus. With little motors controlling everything. He's an illusionist! He's probably spent his entire career craving praise from professionals. From the REAL professionals, without using tricks. And he explains as much to Dr Satler. How he wanted to make something that "wasn't an illusion". The gaze from Dr Grant is probably something his ego really craves - Validation. Vindication. And awe at his accomplishments. Specifically from those who have soared past him on an academic level.
I love the interaction with Grant and Muldoon here. On one side you have Grant, still blown away, acting like a kid that found out Santa is real and gets to visit his workshop. Then Muldoon, the game warden that knows it all about predators and respects them, but these Velociraptors frighten him enough that he thinks they should be taken out. There isn't any tension between the two but the perspective they bring: child like curiosity vs world weary apprehension is great.
well grant is the leading scientist in his field and his behavioral studies were groundbreaking in his universe. his passion lies with dinosaur behavior, and being able to get information from a handler is just too exciting a situation to keep himself from inquiring. I dont think grant ever shows a lack of respect for the predators and muldoon picks up on that, as none of the questions muldoon has been asked are things his superiors even consider/cared about.
This movie was beyond its time. Just outstanding. I’ll never forget Jeff goldblum’s line “life finds a way” I’ve never seen such a true statement in my life

LOL Muldoon's first line, "They should all be destroyed." Everyday he looked down into that raptor cage at the big female and she looked right back. Robert knew that one day that bitch was going to eat him.
Muldoon grew up in Kenya and spent almost his entire life before coming to Jurassic Park hunting lions and big game. In the book he even says that the Raptors are by far the most dangerous animals to have ever lived.
1:12 I love how in this scene Grant immediately walks up to Muldoon to speak with him. It just shows how interested and dedicated he is. Forever the curious paleontologist.

As a young child, I liked Jurassic Park purely due to the dinosaur scenes. I had no idea what the movie was really about. It's only as an adult do I now understand and appreciate it. Amazing movie!

same with the books, when i was a kid i wanted to jump straight into the action and dinosaurs but reading them as an adult, i really enjoy the scientific and philosophical buildup.

The raptor introduction is even better and more frightening in the book. Malcolm questions their intelligence and he soon learns that the raptors found out that humans are easy prey. The line "be thankful for that fence" from a park worker always gives me chills as he must have known what kind of creatures they were dealing with. Makes me wonder what happened before in the park.
Even with Jurassic Park the book is still way better than the film. The film made a couple of improvements though like making Hammond a much more likable character and giving Ellie a larger role
@@itzbebop If i recall, he wasn't eaten, but had a massive laceration from a Velociraptor's claw and was mortally wounded, and was constantly screaming "raptor". He was with a corrupt executive (who was merged with Gerrano in the movie... in the book, Gerrano is much more heroic and actually survives) who wasn't forthcoming with information when he brought the injured worker to a doctor and took the doctor's camera when he took pictures of the wound.
Dolphins can be pretty sadistic, just like many other animals. But they show an amazing depth of intelligence and I don't think there's ever been an attack on a human before. They're very social animals in general. They mostly attack whales in the wild because there seems to be a natural rivalry between the two.
This is a scene that showcases why Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He just simply uses sounds of the raptors and the cow screaming along with the trees violently shaking and not show the action to truly build tension for these raptors for when we finally see them.
Plus, it would not be very audience friendly to see a cow on screen being mauled to death, torn apart, and eaten. I've always wondered how farmers at slaughterhouses feel after killing cows.

Every single person in this scene is phenomenal. Watch Malcolm and Ellie nervously trade glances. Watch Malcolm look down in absolute horror. He knows what will happen. Grant & Muldoon are having actual adult conversations while Hammond and Genaro still play pretend.
This scene was so fucking frightening back in '93 when I was 12. And the kitchen hide and seek scene too...I remember we bribed to dude in the cinema to let us in cz it was full. This film was trully a masterpiece.

I was 12. Though I must admit I was far more scared shitless after watching 'the Relic' with Tom Sizemore. Holy shit, the Kothoga was one of the most terrifying monsters in cinema.
Classic Spielberg. He knows our imagination can be just as horrifying as anything he puts on screen so we hear the raptors and see what they can do without actually seeing them, making it all the more effective when we final see them in action later in the film. He did this in Jaws and it worked just as well there. Building up anticipation is crucial to good horror. Modern horror flicks should remember this more often.
Spielberg definitely used some of the same techniques in both movies. The shredded harness at the end of this clip even calls to mind the air mattress washing up on the beach with the enormous bite mark after the boy is attacked in "Jaws."
Really sad knowing what happened to Robert Muldoon's actor. I heard that he was supposed to survive this movie but due to illness and this being his last time on set, he character died. Rest in peace Bob Peck.
He didnt die until 5 years after Jurassic Park was released, he was diagnosed with cancer a year after Jurassic Park was released but at the time it would have been filmed he would have been fine so the decision to kill him off in the movie would be unrelated to that of his future illness and death some 5 years on.
The buildup to the raptors reveal towards the end of the film was excellent. Not only do we get the opening with the workers death and this scene with the cow, but Muldoons description clarifies just how dangerous the unseen terror is. “Lethal at eight months, and I do mean LETHAL......cheetah speed.......extremely intelligent, even problem solving intelligent.” Makes you feel just how helpless everyone is when the raptors get out.
After reading some comments here and in other Jurassic Park videos (the Lunch scene, the opening scene, the Dodgson one), I am quite amazed at the audience this movie has, with very interesting arguments regarding the philosophy of JP and bringing dinosaurs to the XX century, the cinematography of the film, the terror portrayed, the comparisons with the book, etc. Best of all, very respectful comments (no trolls or rude commenters). Keep it up!!

What I love about this scene isn’t the Velocoraptors or Alan Grant Or even Hammond. It’s Ian Malcolm just watch him...he’s not saying a word instead he’s analysing everything he’s just witnessed, and everything he’s thinking here he expresses in the very next scene, Stunning Continuity.
The fact you don't see the raptors and just bunch of bushes and trees moving when the attack is happening is what makes this scene so scary. The suggestion of how lethal the raptors are plus the dialogue from Muldoon really are the sort of scenes I missed in the newer movies.

HeirofGojira91 No they couldnt not to the level you are talking about anyway. A meat eater has to have teeth, digestive tract, and even brains to understand, eat, and process meat as a food source. That is a LOT to change in an animal. Herbivores for example have flat large teeth which are used to grind up food while Carnivores have pointed sharp teeth to slice apart flesh. Basically looking at everything a meat eater needs in order for them to eat you would have to make a whole new animal in order to make a raptor a herbivore. Too many changes. The puffer fish is an example of a SINGLE trait being breed out namely the poison but it leaves the fish as its self its one change by selecting over and over again less toxic fish until you get a poison free puffer fish is MUCH easier then changing a whole diet style. As for liquid diet or tofu as far as I am aware tofu only works for omnivores because our more complex digestive tracts allow us to pull the nutrients from the tofu a plant that are the same as from meat. A carnivore which is a single tract system may not be able to digest it. Liquid wouldnt work because of the animal's need to hunt they also probably wouldnt even recognize it.
I remember I used to think the cow was supposed to be a robot and thinking, "Why would the raptors want to eat a robot cow?" Ah, the ignorance of childhood. Love the "Who's hungry?" at the end.
I knew it was real from the start back then (I'm a rancher's son, so I've seen cattle all my life, my dad even had a couple cattle that looked exactly like that one XD )
I remember when this was released, I was 3-4 years old. People I remember including myself were downright frighteningly mystified when the Raptors here are introduced. These were scary (once alive) creatures audiences had never seen nor imagined. One of Spielbergs crowning achievements in cinema.
agree man - i was only born when thhe movie was released but watched it from a young age - was both in love with it and terrified. Longed to see real dinosaurs but remembered the dangers and lessons of the film (then later the book when I read that). Kept having dino nightmares, esp Trex in San Fran scene from JP2
As scary as the movie Raptors are, they pale in comparison to the book raptors. Those fuckers can chew through steel bars and can survive direct hits from rocket launchers. In short, they are horrific.
@@ramonserna8089 You also have to understand that the novel dino weren't just brought back to life, they were also genetically engineered to be as vicious as possible. The book compys had hollow teeth for venom like the komodo dragon. Never was a thing in real life, but book Hammond was a true asshole and wanted bigger and badder in every way. But yes, it's a very good thing they toned it down here. The raptors are already hard to swallow. I'd hate to see our hearts explode if the book ones were used.
@@ramonserna8089 the rocket launchers were simply long range tranquillisers that were rocket propelled so you didn't need to be too close to a t-rex. And the steel they chewed was chain links in a fence i believe
@@ramonserna8089 Well the book was less accurate in its portrayal of dinosaurs than the movie. The idea behind the dinosaurs in the book is that every single one of them had some quirk that no one was expecting. The dilophisaurs could spit venom, the T-rex would get sick when it drank from the lagoon sometimes, the triceratops would kill each other if the herd got too big, and the raptors? the raptors had hyena strength jaws and problem solving intelligence. The point in the book being, and what is only mentioned in passing in the film, is that if you were to reserect an extinct species you have very little idea of what you're going to get until you get it and you might be in for a nasty surprise.
Nothing, NOTHING, beats the raptors from the first film. They were the stuff of nightmares. That scene where the big one ate Muldoon gave me nightmares for months after. In Jurassic World they're colour-coded pets. No comparison.
I liked what they did with Blue - I really did - but the film would have been more interesting if it was entirely about Chris Pratt and the raptors. I agree with you: the original raptors were _amazing_. "the stuff of nightmares" is a great description. But they also led the movie to skirt the edge of a monster flick, and that's really not what it was supposed to be. We perceived the raptors as evil monsters because of their viciousness, but they were hungry animals predisposed to see humans negatively.
A true monster flick involves creatures that don't behave like animals. The Spinosaurus relentlessly pursued the humans for most of the film, even continuing to search for them when it lost the trail, despite having a dead T-rex to feast on. In the first film, the T-rex got bored chasing Muldoon and Malcom when they fled it in a Jeep, and it went after much easier prey, not to return until the very end of the film (when it ignored the humans entirely). Had no one attracted its attention when it got loose in the first place, it would have moved off in search of prey elsewhere. Even the velociraptors only pursued the humans when they knew where humans were. They were _closer_ to monsters than the T-rex was because of the plot of the film, but it was clear that they were just hungry animals hunting relatively defenseless prey. Fearsome and dangerous, yes, but apt to ignore you if you weren't in close proximity. JAWS was a genuine monster because it didn't behave like a real shark that just happened to be in close proximity to humans - it was actively hunting humans even in boats (which are typically avoided by real sharks).
Territorial, sure, but the sheer _relentlessness_ that the Spinosaurus displays is far beyond anything else we've seen from any other dino in any of the films - with the possible exception of the T-rexes in Lost World (and they stop once the presumed "home" of the invading humans is destroyed). There was only one raptor after Dr. Satler in the power station, and she and Grant assume that it won't figure out how to open the door before they manage to escape the island (hence Grant's line "It's just the two raptors, right?" while holding the shotgun). For me, I was wondering what would stop it from simply breaking the door down, but that assumes it really understands what a door is - unless it saw her open and shut the door, it probably wouldn't recognize it as a potential opening.
That broken sling they lift up at the end would've been absolutely covered in blood/steak in real life - but I suspect that would've given a lot of little moviegoers nightmares.
Carl Scruggs Ed Regis's death was gruesome and pretty terrifying. The infant rex ambushed him in the jungle, toyed with him a bit, then held him down and ripped out his entrails while he was alive and screaming. The two kids watched the whole thing too
Maybe for sport the Raptors cut the bovine out of the harness first. They knew they were stuck in a small inclosure; they might as well practice some cornering tactics.
If you listen carefully when the raptors attack, you can hear the cow "scream" for around three seconds before it goes silent and you only hear the raptors. Which means whilst the cow was torn to bloody pieces, it only suffered for three seconds before dying.
I love the fact Muldoon is meant to know more about raptors than anyone, yet he didn't know about the side trap that Dr Grant mentioned at the beginning to the kid. "Those other raptors... you didn't even know they were there."
reading this comment, i just realised that he probably never had the chance to see them do that because the park never allowed the raptors to hunt or stalk their prey. he might have had the chance to learn about their hunting techniques otherwise.
Watching a natural killer in action really changes one's perspective. I used to think people who owned lions and tigers as pets were cool, now I think they're crazy. At any moment, that lion could rip their throat open or spill their innards onto their mansion floor. Unless you can literally read an animals mind, you have no idea what they will do.
Well, I would be more concerned about other people living with those wild animals owner. We had such a case in Dubai were a lion all for sudden attacked a media crew member who was overconfident that the lion is not going to do anything to him and would treat him just like how it treats its owner..

These actors are all so strong that I would watch a movie of them just touring the park as planned - no action scenes, no tension - just giving their thoughts and debating the future of the park.
This scene is interesting especially at 1:46. Two seperate conversations are being had. One being jeff goldblum's character standing in the middle listening or just being cautious. We hear muldoon's conversation with grant but we also hear hammond's conversation as well. Hearing hammond being the upmost positive about his creation, while muldoon being negative about it
This scene was set up a lot cooler in the book, with the raptors suddenly showing themselves in a "mock" attack against Malcolm, Grant, Tim and Ellie, with only a blast from the electric fence to stop them.
The raptors made the fence smoke and were completely undeterred. And their fixation on humans as prey was a not so subtle hint that they already knew we are easy to kill.
Just amazing this scene. Hammond did all he could to get them away from this encounter even offering food😂. When they are staring at the massacre Hammond just watching their faces knowing this attraction they had little control over and he needed their approval. "We have the best structural engineers" "So did Hammond"
The older I get the more I find in this scene to appreciate. I saw this film when I was almost 20, and was so blown away by the spectacle of CGI dinosaurs that even though I saw the film 4 times over the course of a two week period, it's really been in the years of repeat viewings that I gained the most appreciation for moments like the one above. There's a wonderful timelessness to this film, that even 30 years later has not really diminished.
I wish when I was younger I understood this scene, especially the dialog between Grant and Muldoon, when they talk about the intelligance and specificities of the raptors. I love the acting as well, including the detail of Malcom listing in on the conversation.
Malcom (I think) deliberately wanted to listen in to Robert Muldoon’s conversation with Alan Grant,(And not to John Hammond:-)he was skeptical of Jurassic Park & unimpressed with the idea of re-creating dangerous dinosaurs for the modern-era,as entertainment pieces,for paying guests. Also hearing Muldoon’s views (On the raptors & everything else) were more truthful (I think,in his mind?) than hearing the perfect,spin Hammond was trying to put on them, with his PR man,Ed Regis too(Novel:-)
I saw this movie about 100 times and i’ve only just realised the ‘Big One’ is actually a character in this movie, out for revenge on humans. I love the way when Muldoon finally gets killed, it zooms in on her. She’s almost saying to the audience “i told you i would escape one day and get my revenge”. This was foreshadowed in the opening scene where Muldoon locks eyes with her in the cage.
True bro I was sweating when rexy gave a hell of an intro and I was peeking behind my mother's chair and not even dare to open both eyes🙄🙄. And the worst part is I used to hear the shaking sound of earth when rexy steps in and the ..the water movin around ma house and shadows on ma windows😓😓😓....oh boy nightmares in childhood memories and always ending up as a bldy snack for some these killing machines in sleep 😑😑😓🥵
The reason why no jurassic world will ever top this one is because now they have all this cgi and special effects and such to show as much as possible, to be as intimidating as possible. The fact is, our minds can create things far more frightening than any special effects could ever create. This scene is extremely simple, no cgi, no special effects, just sounds, yet to this day it scares the shit out of me. I never felt that in jurassic world, because they actively try to top what they've already made, when they should actually try to copy it more.
VJCS2411 Couldn't agree with you more. Jurassic Park can actually fall in the categories horror/thriller. While Jurassic World, even though I liked the film, can only fall within the categories action/adventure. I hope Fallen Kingdom will include some scary scenes with more suspense and less CGI.
And because it had great characters, it was new(only so much you can do with a story about dinosaurs killing humans) and had a great build up. I absolutely hate how the raptors were used in Jurassic World.

Virtual Warp No i meant there's only so much you can do with a plot involving dinosaurs and humans. It will always be humans fuck up and get killed by dinosaurs and that is one of the reasons Jurassic park was so good because it was all fresh and new and something awesome and scary. If Jurassic World was the first dinosaur movie ever released it wouldve been much more liked but it was all the same again, they make a mistake at the park and that gets people killed plus the characters werent as likeable and the raptors that were the most thrilling parts in the first two movies were almost tamed in this movie. With that said, it was still a movie about dinosaurs so i still enjoyed it lol.
Labyriiint I hear you. I'd wish they created a script which wouldn't revolve around the original Jurassic Park. Just create something entirely different from Jurassic Park. It can't be that difficult to accomplish. Now, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom it seems that they are trying to divide themselves from the original trilogy. I know there are certain resembling elements to The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Still, the main story of the upcoming film will follow a rescue operation to save the dinosaurs from an active volcano. At least that is something we haven't seen before in a Jurassic Park/World film. It is innovative enough for me to go see it when it releases. It could very well be the best Jurassic Park sequel you and I have ever seen!
Same here, I rewatched it today. I still remember all the violent scenes, know idea why my parents were okay with letting me see this, not that I'm complaining.
The reason the raptor scenes are so intense is because this scene hyped them up so well. The raptors in the kitchen scene wouldn’t have been as scary if Muldoon hadn’t described how dangerous they are in this scene.
I love the way that Hammond gazed at Grant with that devilish grin when the raptors attacked. He knows that curiosity about the savage nature of these dinos will be overwhelming for Grant and hopes to sway him by exploiting that weakness. Clever boy...
So the velociraptors checked the electrified fence perimeter for weaknesses when the biggest weakness was right in front of them.. the cow sling lowered from above. They actually left the doors open when it dropped down and came up, instead of keeping them closed to ensure a dino wasn't coming back up with it to hop out. All one raptor would have to do is catch a ride up on that bad boy and they're free from the pen. XD
:) Do I personally think they are complete morons? From the book's narrative, I think so. InGen was cutting corners wherever the could. They skimped on backup computer systems, they put the computer security into the hands of one IT guy, Hammond skipped moving forward with an updated version of the dinosaurs and kept the ones he already had (basically the prototypes instead of the ones with the genetic bugs worked out) so the park could open on time, come on... just One fence? I'm not trying to do an "Everything wrong with Jurassic Park" but to say the least, they were building a hybrid of an animal zoo, and a dinosaur exhibit, but not a dinosaur park. I'm sure that someone was watching that harness come up, but it was surrounded by trees.. they didn't take the time to make a clear line of sight to the ground in the pen. It's InGen working their taking shortcuts magic. They underestimated the dinos. They forgot how high those raptors can jump.. it doesn't even have to ride it up, the harness just needs to make it halfway there and it can jump onto the harness, then jump out. The workers are only following the regulations and using the equipment set in place by Hammond. Hammond is the moron lol.
Joshua Benton I would sacrifice 100 workers just to have a t-rex. seriously if they said they could clone a real life trex but that it would escape and kill 100 park employees I would say go for it. You can always hire more low wage hispanic workers. But a trex is magnificent.
They aren't actually velociraptors. The raptors in jurassic park are actually a more dangerous raptor called Deinonychus the reason the are called velociraptors in the film is because either steven spielburg or someone in the production though "velociraptor" sounded scarier than "deinonychus". In real life a velociraptor is only about 3 ft tall and 7 feet long. when deinonychus is about 5 feet tall and 14-17 feet long just like the raptors in the film.

Brilliant how Spielberg doesn't give us a good look at the raptors until one of them is right in Muldoon's face. Just like how we don't see the Rex until the fences are off - he never shows us the predatory dinosaurs in any circumstance where the humans are in still in control. Which leaves a more menacing impression on the audience.
Yes it is when the raptors are in control when they chose to reveal themselves. Odds are if you see the raptor it’s already too late.
I think that the fact special effects of that level were very expensive in the 90's, played a big part in the decision of not showing it yet.
But yeah, it also converged with narrative choices in order to give more fuel to imaginary mind instead of giving us everything in the face, unlike nowadays dummy blockbusters.
@Alexa V. Morgan Jurassic Park is basically Steven Spielberg applying all the lessons he learned from JAWS. And it works fantastically.
Showing less is plenty. We saw how fast they are in the beginning. We saw how strong they are and how tolerate they are to electricity. We know they're deadly because one man was brutally killed. This scene shows that there are more than one of them and Muldoon mentions how smart they are. All we needed to see is how they hunt and trap their prey.

@@mquiroz90 In the novel, Malcolm and Hammond were constantly fighting because Malcolm correctly deduced the entire park was destined for failure. Also, in the novel, Hammond and Muldoon barely got along. They also had several fights when they found out Nedry had stolen a Jeep and taken off with the dino embryos.
It's a little moment but I love that Grant rushes up to shake Muldoon's hand and introduce himself so he can ask the questions he's been waiting his whole life to have answered.
I know, I love that too. It’s a great little background character moment that gets overlooked. A bit like the lawyer’s “Who, me?” hand wave on the helicopter, just before the score kicks in. Another very underrated piece of acting, imo.
And the way he smiles like a kid and waves Ellie over to come talk to him too and she’s like nah nah I came here for the botany stuff those things are all you babe💀🤣
Makes me wish we could've seen more of the two together further on in the movie.

Most animals who hunt in packs usually rely on numbers to overcome prey, but the raptors rely on finding weaknesses to take down their prey.

You and I must have watched a different video than this one. Because I saw a hunter that was downright disturbed by how dangerous, predatory and deadly something was. To the point where he elevates it above anything else he's hunted; and because Muldoon wasn't a serial killer, that precludes humans. He's saying right there in this scene that the only thing more capable of complex behavior and is more dangerous is a human - and likely only a human with a tool and an ability and will to use it.
Muldoon is basically like the dug in, entrenched commander that has seen what the enemy is capable of and respects them for it. He still wants to kill the enemy because they're dangerous and they want to kill him. No matter how advanced they are, they're still driven on instinct. In a raptor, them seeing you and murdering you just so they can eat your liver is a normal/standard behavioral baseline. In humans, that's a mental disease if someone did that to another sapient, living, being.
I'd argue Muldoon has more respect than even whats-his-name from Jurassic World where he's trying to train them like a fucking dog or a dolphin. Yes, it shows how advanced, intelligence-wise, raptors are... It's also ignoring what they are - a killing machine that _ISN'T_ a domesticated animal. At least he was kinda doing it begrudgingly while the other asshole wanted to literally make them the new service dog and sell them. Still, that's not respecting what the raptors are in the Jurassic Park universe. Not at all.
I liked Jurassic World, but the original just set the bar so damn high. Jurassic Park was beyond extraordinary.

Muldoon is a great subversion of the classic movie mercenary. He's not naive and he's not arrogant. He knew just how dangerous the raptors were and knew they had to be stopped. It wasn't a game to him, it was life and death. In the end, he did everything right, he only lost due to lack of knowledge. He even tipped his hat to the Raptors, knowing they had beaten him fair and square. If he had more time to talk with Grant he would have known their hunting strategy and probably would have won.
That's why Muldoon is one of my favorite JP characters in the entire series. He's a practical man who used his knowledge well. He was also right about how dangerous the raptors were.
In the book he lives.
And now in jurassic world, we have motorcycle raptor infused fast and furious type scenes where cute little pet blue is saving the day.

Yeah actually i'm pretty sure the only reason he puts himself in such a bad position as to potentially be injured or killed is to cover & protect other people in a situation where more lives than his own are on the line. Also i seem to recall they actually said [in the book?] that they originally made the dinosaurs, raptors in particular, as close to their genetic origins as possible, but they were so smart they had to dumb them down on a genetic level so they would stop escaping everything they tried to contain them with!

We all know how much even a paper cut can send a shiver down your spine at times or getting some skin ripped off in an accident falling off your bike as a kid. It sure is immersive. Yet when you think about it, how are the three animals supposed to move with all of that vegetation let alone get enough space with the paddock being so tiny? It all looks cramped as heck. Realism isn’t exactly the highest priority of these setups, lol.
1:04 - Watch Hammond's face carefully. He never takes his eyes off Grant. He's watching for something. And his faces twitches into the faintest of smile. For Grant isn't watching in horror as Hammond probably feared - but enraptured fascination!
**Edit** - Also consider that later restaurant scene, in which a humbled Hammond explained how his first attraction was a Flea Circus. With little motors controlling everything. He's an illusionist! He's probably spent his entire career craving praise from professionals. From the REAL professionals, without using tricks. And he explains as much to Dr Satler. How he wanted to make something that "wasn't an illusion".
The gaze from Dr Grant is probably something his ego really craves - Validation. Vindication. And awe at his accomplishments. Specifically from those who have soared past him on an academic level.

I love the interaction with Grant and Muldoon here.
On one side you have Grant, still blown away, acting like a kid that found out Santa is real and gets to visit his workshop. Then Muldoon, the game warden that knows it all about predators and respects them, but these Velociraptors frighten him enough that he thinks they should be taken out.
There isn't any tension between the two but the perspective they bring: child like curiosity vs world weary apprehension is great.
well grant is the leading scientist in his field and his behavioral studies were groundbreaking in his universe. his passion lies with dinosaur behavior, and being able to get information from a handler is just too exciting a situation to keep himself from inquiring.
I dont think grant ever shows a lack of respect for the predators and muldoon picks up on that, as none of the questions muldoon has been asked are things his superiors even consider/cared about.
I was just glad even as a kid that there was never tension between them.
But I loved Hammonds and Ian's tension! Epic movie.

As a young child, I liked Jurassic Park purely due to the dinosaur scenes. I had no idea what the movie was really about. It's only as an adult do I now understand and appreciate it. Amazing movie!

The raptor introduction is even better and more frightening in the book. Malcolm questions their intelligence and he soon learns that the raptors found out that humans are easy prey. The line "be thankful for that fence" from a park worker always gives me chills as he must have known what kind of creatures they were dealing with. Makes me wonder what happened before in the park.

Even with Jurassic Park the book is still way better than the film. The film made a couple of improvements though like making Hammond a much more likable character and giving Ellie a larger role

In the opening scene of the movie we see a regular worker eaten by a dinosaur just in transport.
@@itzbebop If i recall, he wasn't eaten, but had a massive laceration from a Velociraptor's claw and was mortally wounded, and was constantly screaming "raptor". He was with a corrupt executive (who was merged with Gerrano in the movie... in the book, Gerrano is much more heroic and actually survives) who wasn't forthcoming with information when he brought the injured worker to a doctor and took the doctor's camera when he took pictures of the wound.

Dolphins can be pretty sadistic, just like many other animals. But they show an amazing depth of intelligence and I don't think there's ever been an attack on a human before. They're very social animals in general. They mostly attack whales in the wild because there seems to be a natural rivalry between the two.

This is a scene that showcases why Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He just simply uses sounds of the raptors and the cow screaming along with the trees violently shaking and not show the action to truly build tension for these raptors for when we finally see them.
Plus, it would not be very audience friendly to see a cow on screen being mauled to death, torn apart, and eaten. I've always wondered how farmers at slaughterhouses feel after killing cows.

I was 12. Though I must admit I was far more scared shitless after watching 'the Relic' with Tom Sizemore. Holy shit, the Kothoga was one of the most terrifying monsters in cinema.

Classic Spielberg. He knows our imagination can be just as horrifying as anything he puts on screen so we hear the raptors and see what they can do without actually seeing them, making it all the more effective when we final see them in action later in the film. He did this in Jaws and it worked just as well there. Building up anticipation is crucial to good horror. Modern horror flicks should remember this more often.
Spielberg definitely used some of the same techniques in both movies. The shredded harness at the end of this clip even calls to mind the air mattress washing up on the beach with the enormous bite mark after the boy is attacked in "Jaws."

Really sad knowing what happened to Robert Muldoon's actor. I heard that he was supposed to survive this movie but due to illness and this being his last time on set, he character died. Rest in peace Bob Peck.
He didnt die until 5 years after Jurassic Park was released, he was diagnosed with cancer a year after Jurassic Park was released but at the time it would have been filmed he would have been fine so the decision to kill him off in the movie would be unrelated to that of his future illness and death some 5 years on.
Almost 20 years later; and this movie still feels as if it was made yesterday. Truly a masterpiece of filmmaking!

The buildup to the raptors reveal towards the end of the film was excellent. Not only do we get the opening with the workers death and this scene with the cow, but Muldoons description clarifies just how dangerous the unseen terror is. “Lethal at eight months, and I do mean LETHAL......cheetah speed.......extremely intelligent, even problem solving intelligent.”
Makes you feel just how helpless everyone is when the raptors get out.

After reading some comments here and in other Jurassic Park videos (the Lunch scene, the opening scene, the Dodgson one), I am quite amazed at the audience this movie has, with very interesting arguments regarding the philosophy of JP and bringing dinosaurs to the XX century, the cinematography of the film, the terror portrayed, the comparisons with the book, etc. Best of all, very respectful comments (no trolls or rude commenters). Keep it up!!

What I love about this scene isn’t the Velocoraptors or Alan Grant Or even Hammond. It’s Ian Malcolm just watch him...he’s not saying a word instead he’s analysing everything he’s just witnessed, and everything he’s thinking here he expresses in the very next scene, Stunning Continuity.
The fact you don't see the raptors and just bunch of bushes and trees moving when the attack is happening is what makes this scene so scary. The suggestion of how lethal the raptors are plus the dialogue from Muldoon really are the sort of scenes I missed in the newer movies.

HeirofGojira91 No they couldnt not to the level you are talking about anyway. A meat eater has to have teeth, digestive tract, and even brains to understand, eat, and process meat as a food source. That is a LOT to change in an animal. Herbivores for example have flat large teeth which are used to grind up food while Carnivores have pointed sharp teeth to slice apart flesh. Basically looking at everything a meat eater needs in order for them to eat you would have to make a whole new animal in order to make a raptor a herbivore. Too many changes.
The puffer fish is an example of a SINGLE trait being breed out namely the poison but it leaves the fish as its self its one change by selecting over and over again less toxic fish until you get a poison free puffer fish is MUCH easier then changing a whole diet style.
As for liquid diet or tofu as far as I am aware tofu only works for omnivores because our more complex digestive tracts allow us to pull the nutrients from the tofu a plant that are the same as from meat. A carnivore which is a single tract system may not be able to digest it.
Liquid wouldnt work because of the animal's need to hunt they also probably wouldnt even recognize it.

I remember when this was released, I was 3-4 years old. People I remember including myself were downright frighteningly mystified when the Raptors here are introduced. These were scary (once alive) creatures audiences had never seen nor imagined. One of Spielbergs crowning achievements in cinema.
agree man - i was only born when thhe movie was released but watched it from a young age - was both in love with it and terrified. Longed to see real dinosaurs but remembered the dangers and lessons of the film (then later the book when I read that). Kept having dino nightmares, esp Trex in San Fran scene from JP2

As scary as the movie Raptors are, they pale in comparison to the book raptors. Those fuckers can chew through steel bars and can survive direct hits from rocket launchers. In short, they are horrific.

The book compys had hollow teeth for venom like the komodo dragon. Never was a thing in real life, but book Hammond was a true asshole and wanted bigger and badder in every way. But yes, it's a very good thing they toned it down here. The raptors are already hard to swallow. I'd hate to see our hearts explode if the book ones were used.

@@ramonserna8089 Well the book was less accurate in its portrayal of dinosaurs than the movie. The idea behind the dinosaurs in the book is that every single one of them had some quirk that no one was expecting. The dilophisaurs could spit venom, the T-rex would get sick when it drank from the lagoon sometimes, the triceratops would kill each other if the herd got too big, and the raptors? the raptors had hyena strength jaws and problem solving intelligence. The point in the book being, and what is only mentioned in passing in the film, is that if you were to reserect an extinct species you have very little idea of what you're going to get until you get it and you might be in for a nasty surprise.

The one part of the scene that always kept my attention is the specific way the foliage thrashes across Jeff Goldblum's face with his reaction.
Nothing, NOTHING, beats the raptors from the first film. They were the stuff of nightmares. That scene where the big one ate Muldoon gave me nightmares for months after.
In Jurassic World they're colour-coded pets. No comparison.
I liked what they did with Blue - I really did - but the film would have been more interesting if it was entirely about Chris Pratt and the raptors.
I agree with you: the original raptors were _amazing_. "the stuff of nightmares" is a great description. But they also led the movie to skirt the edge of a monster flick, and that's really not what it was supposed to be.
We perceived the raptors as evil monsters because of their viciousness, but they were hungry animals predisposed to see humans negatively.
Jurassic Park 3 and World are monster flicks in the same vein as JAWS.
The first and second film aren't.
A true monster flick involves creatures that don't behave like animals. The Spinosaurus relentlessly pursued the humans for most of the film, even continuing to search for them when it lost the trail, despite having a dead T-rex to feast on.
In the first film, the T-rex got bored chasing Muldoon and Malcom when they fled it in a Jeep, and it went after much easier prey, not to return until the very end of the film (when it ignored the humans entirely). Had no one attracted its attention when it got loose in the first place, it would have moved off in search of prey elsewhere. Even the velociraptors only pursued the humans when they knew where humans were. They were _closer_ to monsters than the T-rex was because of the plot of the film, but it was clear that they were just hungry animals hunting relatively defenseless prey. Fearsome and dangerous, yes, but apt to ignore you if you weren't in close proximity.
JAWS was a genuine monster because it didn't behave like a real shark that just happened to be in close proximity to humans - it was actively hunting humans even in boats (which are typically avoided by real sharks).
Territorial, sure, but the sheer _relentlessness_ that the Spinosaurus displays is far beyond anything else we've seen from any other dino in any of the films - with the possible exception of the T-rexes in Lost World (and they stop once the presumed "home" of the invading humans is destroyed).
There was only one raptor after Dr. Satler in the power station, and she and Grant assume that it won't figure out how to open the door before they manage to escape the island (hence Grant's line "It's just the two raptors, right?" while holding the shotgun). For me, I was wondering what would stop it from simply breaking the door down, but that assumes it really understands what a door is - unless it saw her open and shut the door, it probably wouldn't recognize it as a potential opening.

That broken sling they lift up at the end would've been absolutely covered in blood/steak in real life - but I suspect that would've given a lot of little moviegoers nightmares.

Carl Scruggs Ed Regis's death was gruesome and pretty terrifying. The infant rex ambushed him in the jungle, toyed with him a bit, then held him down and ripped out his entrails while he was alive and screaming. The two kids watched the whole thing too
Maybe for sport the Raptors cut the bovine out of the harness first. They knew they were stuck in a small inclosure; they might as well practice some cornering tactics.
If you listen carefully when the raptors attack, you can hear the cow "scream" for around three seconds before it goes silent and you only hear the raptors. Which means whilst the cow was torn to bloody pieces, it only suffered for three seconds before dying.

I love the fact Muldoon is meant to know more about raptors than anyone, yet he didn't know about the side trap that Dr Grant mentioned at the beginning to the kid. "Those other raptors... you didn't even know they were there."
reading this comment, i just realised that he probably never had the chance to see them do that because the park never allowed the raptors to hunt or stalk their prey. he might have had the chance to learn about their hunting techniques otherwise.

This scene is interesting especially at 1:46. Two seperate conversations are being had. One being jeff goldblum's character standing in the middle listening or just being cautious. We hear muldoon's conversation with grant but we also hear hammond's conversation as well. Hearing hammond being the upmost positive about his creation, while muldoon being negative about it
This scene was set up a lot cooler in the book, with the raptors suddenly showing themselves in a "mock" attack against Malcolm, Grant, Tim and Ellie, with only a blast from the electric fence to stop them.
The raptors made the fence smoke and were completely undeterred. And their fixation on humans as prey was a not so subtle hint that they already knew we are easy to kill.
Just amazing this scene. Hammond did all he could to get them away from this encounter even offering food😂. When they are staring at the massacre Hammond just watching their faces knowing this attraction they had little control over and he needed their approval. "We have the best structural engineers"

The older I get the more I find in this scene to appreciate. I saw this film when I was almost 20, and was so blown away by the spectacle of CGI dinosaurs that even though I saw the film 4 times over the course of a two week period, it's really been in the years of repeat viewings that I gained the most appreciation for moments like the one above. There's a wonderful timelessness to this film, that even 30 years later has not really diminished.

I wish when I was younger I understood this scene, especially the dialog between Grant and Muldoon, when they talk about the intelligance and specificities of the raptors. I love the acting as well, including the detail of Malcom listing in on the conversation.

Malcom (I think) deliberately wanted to listen in to Robert Muldoon’s conversation with Alan Grant,(And not to John Hammond:-)he was skeptical of Jurassic Park & unimpressed with the idea of re-creating dangerous dinosaurs for the modern-era,as entertainment pieces,for paying guests.
Also hearing Muldoon’s views (On the raptors & everything else) were more truthful (I think,in his mind?) than hearing the perfect,spin Hammond was trying to put on them, with his PR man,Ed Regis too(Novel:-)

I saw this movie about 100 times and i’ve only just realised the ‘Big One’ is actually a character in this movie, out for revenge on humans. I love the way when Muldoon finally gets killed, it zooms in on her. She’s almost saying to the audience “i told you i would escape one day and get my revenge”. This was foreshadowed in the opening scene where Muldoon locks eyes with her in the cage.

Well yeah he is a Hunter and has many hunts where he is being hunted by his target animal.
The reason why no jurassic world will ever top this one is because now they have all this cgi and special effects and such to show as much as possible, to be as intimidating as possible. The fact is, our minds can create things far more frightening than any special effects could ever create. This scene is extremely simple, no cgi, no special effects, just sounds, yet to this day it scares the shit out of me. I never felt that in jurassic world, because they actively try to top what they've already made, when they should actually try to copy it more.

I hope Fallen Kingdom will include some scary scenes with more suspense and less CGI.

Jurassic World was just a fun film, and a great sequel to Jurassic Park in my opinion.
Virtual Warp No i meant there's only so much you can do with a plot involving dinosaurs and humans. It will always be humans fuck up and get killed by dinosaurs and that is one of the reasons Jurassic park was so good because it was all fresh and new and something awesome and scary. If Jurassic World was the first dinosaur movie ever released it wouldve been much more liked but it was all the same again, they make a mistake at the park and that gets people killed plus the characters werent as likeable and the raptors that were the most thrilling parts in the first two movies were almost tamed in this movie. With that said, it was still a movie about dinosaurs so i still enjoyed it lol.

Now, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom it seems that they are trying to divide themselves from the original trilogy.
I know there are certain resembling elements to The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
Still, the main story of the upcoming film will follow a rescue operation to save the dinosaurs from an active volcano.
At least that is something we haven't seen before in a Jurassic Park/World film.
It is innovative enough for me to go see it when it releases.

The reason the raptor scenes are so intense is because this scene hyped them up so well. The raptors in the kitchen scene wouldn’t have been as scary if Muldoon hadn’t described how dangerous they are in this scene.

So the velociraptors checked the electrified fence perimeter for weaknesses when the biggest weakness was right in front of them.. the cow sling lowered from above. They actually left the doors open when it dropped down and came up, instead of keeping them closed to ensure a dino wasn't coming back up with it to hop out. All one raptor would have to do is catch a ride up on that bad boy and they're free from the pen. XD

:) Do I personally think they are complete morons? From the book's narrative, I think so. InGen was cutting corners wherever the could. They skimped on backup computer systems, they put the computer security into the hands of one IT guy, Hammond skipped moving forward with an updated version of the dinosaurs and kept the ones he already had (basically the prototypes instead of the ones with the genetic bugs worked out) so the park could open on time, come on... just One fence? I'm not trying to do an "Everything wrong with Jurassic Park" but to say the least, they were building a hybrid of an animal zoo, and a dinosaur exhibit, but not a dinosaur park. I'm sure that someone was watching that harness come up, but it was surrounded by trees.. they didn't take the time to make a clear line of sight to the ground in the pen. It's InGen working their taking shortcuts magic. They underestimated the dinos. They forgot how high those raptors can jump.. it doesn't even have to ride it up, the harness just needs to make it halfway there and it can jump onto the harness, then jump out. The workers are only following the regulations and using the equipment set in place by Hammond. Hammond is the moron lol.
Joshua Benton I would sacrifice 100 workers just to have a t-rex. seriously if they said they could clone a real life trex but that it would escape and kill 100 park employees I would say go for it. You can always hire more low wage hispanic workers. But a trex is magnificent.
They aren't actually velociraptors. The raptors in jurassic park are actually a more dangerous raptor called Deinonychus the reason the are called velociraptors in the film is because either steven spielburg or someone in the production though "velociraptor" sounded scarier than "deinonychus". In real life a velociraptor is only about 3 ft tall and 7 feet long. when deinonychus is about 5 feet tall and 14-17 feet long just like the raptors in the film.
