Important counterpoint to the stereotype of pilots in developing countries being poorly trained. These guys did a great job of remaining cool under what must've been a terrible shock. Same goes for the cabin crew, too.

Agreed! It said at the end the captain was Serbian. Curious Pilot had another video recently about air India express which also had a Serbian/British pilot. For one of them the actions were extremely poor and this one, fantastic. It’s great to see incidents from less reported areas of the world!

I was due to operate this flight in one of Daallo's smaller Jet aircraft.
Turkish had cancelled this flight for the two previous days citing weather which my crew found odd.
The weather was just fine with a 10 knot crosswind component from the right, using the normal operational runway 05, and we were scratching our heads as to why we were operating these flights.
On the day in question the A321 was used rather than our aircraft.
The passengers had no idea of the airframe substitution, and boarded with their Turkish Airlines boarding passes, and the rest ... as they say, is history.

The crew, both cockpit and cabin, did a fantastic job there. Beyond that, it's amazing that the aircraft held inntact despite the explosion - had it been on a higher altitude, the force of the depressurization would have likely weakened/further damaged the airframe, possibly beyond controlability.
But also, this accident kind of makes me think of Alaska 1282. I watched Mentour Pilot's video on it today and he mentioned the crew's decision to land asap and consequently to stick to a very high rate of descent. Since they did not know the extent of the damage to the aircraft, I was somewhat surprised they took the risk of further damage. Of course, I'm not a pilot and definitely wasn't there so I am as far from "knowing better" than them as one can be, I just find it a little surprising, even more so in contrast with the subject of this video

  • @sailaab
    @sailaab 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Hermes Airlines, which owned that particular aircraft, shut down the same month in 2016.
The primary reason given for was its parent Air Méditerranée going into liquidation.
Although I am from South Asia, I distinctly recollect discussing this unfortunate event with others in Somalia or those of Somali descent and living elsewhere.
Off what I understood about the local customs in Somali or many parts of the horn of Africa.. is that.. (even as recently as 2016) security and protocols or rather how personnel view such things.. made it easier for such unfortunate gaps to exist.
On a lighter note, while both the cockpit crew and the cabin crew are being hailed for the professional calibre.. what an embarrassment it must have been for Al-Shabaab to even own up for this.
Abdullahi Abdisalam Borleh, the bomber/scapegoat was just one part of the mission though.
    `
Ali Ahmed Jama Jangali, the minister of Air Transport and Aviation at the time had clearly mentioned that off the 20 or so people detained and questioned, some of those seen (in surveillance videos) possibly carrying that same device/laptop before handing it over to Borleh.. were in-fact airport staff in different capacities.

You do NOT have an A.I. voice. When people say you do, take it as a compliment, since A.I. narration aims for the most pleasant pitch/sound, etc. The reason people think that, however, is proably because we are so used to hearing narrators mispronounce basic words or trip over their own scripts that when someone executes it perfectly we automatically think, "COMPUTER."

Thanks! You are right, the phraseology can differ slightly. In the UK we say ‘hundred’ on FL 100/200/300 etc. This was brought in to prevent ‘level busts’ between FL100/110. Also headings are not given with the ‘hundred’. I usually try to find a balance between phraseologies. Especially as a large part of my audience is from the US. Sometimes my standard ones will come through. 😁

The A.I. is getting really good in trying to prove to us that it is "self aware". lol
Does anyone know the name of the attacker for this flight? I'm always curious to know how such individuals feel it is right to carry out such devastation. That must have been a very thick old-school laptop to have that much explosive embedded, yet not damage anyone's eardrums in the blast.

Odd, but a cursory search doesn't confirm his culpability, just his death.
      From wiki:
"Somali authorities identified the deceased passenger as Abdullahi Abdisalam Borleh, a 55-year-old male from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland region of Somalia, but did not confirm that he was suspected of being the suicide bomber. Borleh was a teacher at an Islamic school"

what happened to the aircraft?..was she repaired?

    • @youngeshmoney
      @youngeshmoney 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

More than likely it was totalled. An explosion even though small would cause issues much further down the line that wouldn't be immediately seen. You can repair that area but damage is not localized, the cost to inspect the entire fuselage would probably be more than the plane costs. Explosion could've caused the fuselage to flex and cause a tiny microscopic crack in the tail that would go unnoticed until a few hundred flights later when the crack grows and causes the tail to separate, you just never know. I don't even think a repair like that is possible. You'd have to replace entire bulkheads and formers, I don't think I've ever seen that procedure in any RM.

I have been watching the growth of AI over the past year and it is a genuine concern (especially because I don’t appear in the videos) that AI generated voice and soon video will explode all over TH-cam. As long as it's just commenters saying your voice is AI, don't worry.
When YT is saying it is and this has consequences, it's a different story.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but personally I like the 'mystery' of not having a face to the videos. Something to do with the voice representing the experience, the quality of the videos, the content of the videos.
Hard to put my finger on it, but I know I'm not alone in this so perhaps somebody else has an explanation that makes more sense.
Or the comment section of Disturban's video of 3 Feb 2024 entitled 'I need your help (Face Reveal)' where people say the same thing, but worded much better.
(All turned out well for him in the end btw)
I'm sure your face is lovely and I hope you can take this in stride.
Either way, in case push comes to shove, do what you need to protect your channel, as no more CP-video's is not really an option 😉

Once again, I appreciate you covering another African case that has hardly gotten any global exposure, and was therefore completely unknown to me.
They were definitely very fortunate that the flight was delayed, that the attacker only managed to blow himself out, and also that he didn't cause a catastrophic amount of structural damage. However, without the swift and effective actions of both the flight crew and the cabin crew, this still could have ended very differently.
By the way, I don't understand why anyone would hear your voice and think it's AI-generated. That has never even come close to crossing my mind because it's so utterly baseless. Honestly, in what world does AI narration sound like this? 🤦

  • @jamest2401

This was the flight that was being reported on, on a New Zealand news program, during which the newscaster, Hilary Barry couldn’t stop laughing, due to the previous news segment including the hilarious phrase, “emergency defecation situation”. Once that short segment had ended, the camera landed back on her smirking face, and she started making that sound in the back of your throat whilst you’re trying not to laugh.😆 She then started to do the report on this flight, and was cracking up the entire time. She cutely ended it by musically saying, “Today could be the day I lose my job.”
    Here’s the TH-cam link. It’s hysterical, and definitely worth a watch…
