I must admit this design was a real challenge to build but I certainly learnt a thing or two. Id love to know the different challenges you face when it comes to designing? If you’re trying to get better at design or simply want to know my process then you might find my latest Patreon video helpful. Not trying to sell you on it. I just think there’s some good information there. After all, being good at woodworking is just one part of our skill set, design is a whole other ball game.
Regarding the lower piece that sagged under its own weight. Have you played with post-tensioning hidden rods? Look into the pre & post-tensioning engineering done for concrete. I’ve been able to stiffen boards by imbedding tightened threaded rods in internal counter archs.
@@BiggMo Sounds like that might require drilling a dead straight 2.5m long hole. sounds fun. Yes you would just cut it out on the underside and then glue a similar piece in place, but that is just not as much of an asylum trip to me.
As a graphic designer in a former life. The piece I find most difficult about design is that the object is 3d not 2d like most of my training was geared toward. So making sure that the design looks good from odd angles is not really second nature to me. Starting to learn Sketch Up helps with that rather than just drawing it in perspective on a piece of paper and saying 'good enough, lets start cutting'.
What resonates most for me as a very novice woodworker is that idea that elevating the challenges of our woodworking also elevates the style and overall quality of the workpieces. Plus with videos such as this we’re exposed to ideas and challenges we might not have conceived of previously. I’m glad I found your channel, and thanks for your inspiring work!
Having watched all your videos it’s obvious you’re enjoying the process now. The editing and voiceovers are constantly improving and adding the little tips is a great idea. Thanks again for sharing your talent.
This is far more than just a table. I imagine a large family celebration bustling with life. With a banquet spread from end to end. A space for memories to be both shared and created. Just a whole lot of love! That’s what inspires me to want to learn how to create pieces of furniture. ❤
Iam totally blown away by your Creative mind & Turning it into reality, I’m 63yrs old a former finish carpenter for 30yrs, I also had a small shop in my basement to build small furniture pieces like end tables ect. I unfortunately became legally blind a few years ago, It really took a lot to figure out what I could still do as far as woodworking. I have spent the last 5yrs studying lutherie I have built 5 ukuleles from scratch & now Iam attempting to build my first full size acoustic steel string guitar. Thanks Nick for outstanding vids
Great video. You're right, no one else is doing this level of producing this quality of woodworking videos. For some reason, 99% of youtube woodworkers thinks it's "enjoyable" to watch the craftsman running 20 boards thru a thickness planner at 10X speed. And your level of craftsmanship is superb. Watching you produce these 'one-off' pieces of work has been truly enjoyable. Thank you. Just a thought - you really don't "need" background music, you have a fantastic voice and the shop sounds are pleasant enough. But, if you do feel the need for it, please consider soft guitar/piano style music. This is just my opinion, though - and you must do what you feel is best for your channel. Thanks again for all these great videos.
Your design and craftsmanship is second to none! I also like the way you communicate your design and production decisions, in a knowledgeable and professional way. You are a great communicator and ambassador for your craft. Thank you for the first class videos.
Beautifully done. The joinery looks so simple, then you throw in all of the angles. Boom, mind blowing. I’m just amazed. Keep them coming. Your video editing and voiceover is first class as well. Love that you have decided to use this way to do your videos.
Your videos occupy a space in the TH-cam landscape with little other company. Please continue the high quality builds, filming, and voiceovers and resist the urge to follow the pack with goofy pop culture clips from tv and movies and you’ll stay at the head of the pack. Top notch work, I am always impressed by what you produce.
After watching several of you’re videos, I’m amazed by the creativity and craftsmanship. I’m also amazed that you’re not wearing eye protection in any of the videos I’ve watched.

It is such a thrill to me to find an Australian craftsman as you are. The table is stunning piece of design and furniture. Just found your channel and look forward to watching more videos and learning new techniques and skills
Hello Nick, it gives me great energy watching you create your art. I'll gladly watch anything you post. The farther outside the box we work the better we become at our craft IMO. "She's right mate!" Cheers
Awesome design and craftsmanship as usual Nick! I like how the tapers at the ends are opposite to balance each other out. Also neat to see how much your shop has changed over the past few years.
Excellent craftsmanship young man. I am a retired furniture maker from Scotland. My love for woodwork will never die. It is in my blood. When I was a boy in my dad's workshop (that was a long long time ago) I can remember the smell of the resin from the red pine was beautiful. That smell just did something. It was a bit like a stunningly beautiful woman passing you wearing expensive perfume. I was hooked on woodworking from that point forward. I loved the smell, working with hand tools but unfortunately didn't have much luck with power tools. I trapped my hand between a drive belt pulley wheel. The switch was faulty and it was the end of the day and was tired. I was sawing a piece of timber when the drive belt slipped. I stopped the saw and forgot to un plug the damn thing and started to tighten the drive belt. The damn thing started with my hand trapped in it. It chewed up my right hand. I lost half a pinkie and the nerves from that was used by the surgeon to rebuild the other two fingers. I was out of work for three months until the tendons healed. Needless to say I never did that again. After months of physio my hand was usable again and I had a long career making unique one off furniture. Bye the way if you need inspiration, my new hobby is image enhancement of NASA images from Mars which was the home of an ancient civilization. There are some amazing sculptures and structures which look absolutely out of this world. You could maybe incorporate some design elements into your designs. Whatever you make I will be enjoying your videos and thank you very much for your content as it gives me so much pleasure to watch them.
Just came across your channel, amazing work just finishing my first project after moving country’s and starting again. Looking forward watching more of your designs
My challenge with design is often that I have an idea for a specific part or visual aesthetic because I haven't done it before, or I have and think it would look good or be useful on the current project. The challenge is how to incorporate that idea into the broader project in a way that in interesting, but doesn't look awkward or stand out too much against the rest of it because it should be appealing as a whole, not just the individual parts. I liked how you did the grooves on your bench video and carried that into the cross braces so there's a unique visual that moves through the whole project.
Hello Nick, I really enjoy Your videos, I always learn so much. You are such an amazing artisan… watching You, I learn how much I don’t know! Thank You!
Every time a watch your newest video, It ends up being my new favorite! This has kind of a simple look and I don't mean simple easy just simple, subtle is maybe a better word. Anyway I love it and might try a smaller maybe writing table size. As always I loved the video!!
Fantastic design, fantastic build, and fantastic video! Thank you for sharing your process! I really want to start getting into woodworking and you are a true inspiration.

Amazing, the video production and voice over are great. It’d be great to see a explanation of how you photograph and light the final still images. I struggle with this critical aspect of making my furniture come to life for my website.
Excellent video Nick. My hunch was the span was large, but you managed to pull it off. Watching your videos makes push my design out of my comfort zone. Thanks
This is an epic table. I almost certainly would have made the same error with the tables bottom rail. But I doubt I would have solved it as elegantly as you did. As someone who is going to build a split top roubo bench in the near future, I'm excited for your take on it. Mine would follow Matt Estley's design pretty closely. I would love to see what you come up with from a simple trip to Bunnings though.
