Brilliant again! Goosebumps throughout. Very interesting about the voice doodling from UMT and Salangai Oli. That jathi conversation brought back fond memories of the movie. I remember feeling that was fascinating. Another mass scene from the movie is when he dances different forms to the same line "pancha bhoothangalum... " "This is Kathak!". Just too good. Thank you so much for your interpretations and additions! Art truly has no end. Pesinde, paadinde, kettunde irukkalam. 🙏🙏

I am not a movie buff, but have watched Kamal’s movies for the music & dance scenes. I loved your enthusiasm and presentation in this Segment, how you not only recognized and applauded the janya ragas & thalas in these films. BUT came up with the Veera Vikrama Thalam as one of the 108 Thalas, and relating it to the Recent Movie Vikram. Superb thinking, researching and presentation to reach out to the movie watching public as well. And obviously they loved your thoughts on those songs and relevance to Carnatic music 👌🏾👌🏾👏🏽👏🏽😇😇🙏🏾🙏🏾

I think this is the first time KB film and Kamal’s classicism has been explained in granular detail. One of the reasons I have enjoyed watching this combination is this classicism and it is enjoyable to see a musician explain and discuss this in such detail. The clever word and swara play in enna samayalo is a delight for the musically inclined people . The whole movie is a clever interplay of music in every scene and the emotions brought out by clever use of different ragas. Great episode once again 👏👏
I concur with your views. A good teacher should be able to deliver the goods( knowledge) even to a slow learner. He is an excellent teacher he has profound knowledge and amazing articulation
Watching on repeat mode Charan. Beautiful, brilliant and all other superlatives. A fitting tribute to KH by an ardent fan. Keep it up. Please extend to the fullest especially the singing prowess of KH.
enna samayalo was already composed for a movie called manipoor mamiyar in late 70s which did not release and so IR used it for UMT....It was called samayal padame in the original
Thanks for reminiscing this classic movie , for me , the best song in the movie is “Nee Ondru thaana en Sangeetham”. Enjoyed listening to you after your QFR “Vedham Nee”.
The uncredited song in UMT is used by Ilayaraja in another song - koonthalile megham vandhu kudi pugunthalo azhaginile, sung by KJY. Brilliant insights Sir

Excellent analysis and interpretation sikkil sir! Unnal mudiyum thambi is all time favorite movie! Have noticed and enjoyed all the aspects of the movie you mentioned. But when you told , it was so interesting and superb revisit to the film and our experiences. Antha Sahana la Oru nadaswaram bit when Kamal goes out of home after fight, Adha vituteengale. Wonderful SGC sir. Now I hv heard the Shanmukapriya from Salangai Oli. Thank you. One more thing I spect of happiness I wanted to share. Your title music in the Raga Kundalavarali is wonderful. On listening to it more than getting reminded of “Bogendra Sayinam”, I’m reminded of a song from early 90’s Malayalam movie “Manichithrathaazhu”, which has been remade as Chandramukhi in Tamizh and Bhool Bhulaiya in Hindi etc. In that movie, the climax song “Orumurai Vandhu Paarthaaya” a Tamizh song on the Kundalavarali raaga. Actress Shobana got national award for this movie especially the climax dance. A small digression but wanted to highlight power of Cinema as a medium in adding glory to Classical Music. You are doing the same sir. Keep up the great work. 🙏
Dear Gurucharan, this is remarkable content and very very enlightening. I am late to the party but so grateful I found this and all the episodes so far. Will share my 1 cent and in each episode’s thread. UMT is my fav KB film to date and I greatly appreciate importance given to Carnatic music. Very enchanting to hear your take on “house-change” and using Gruhabedham to represent , that. As a child the shift from SD to Hindolam would always stumped me hearing the songs back to back. In 1981, Raaja sir used this very SD to Hindolam swaras as a witty musical argument between the competing hero and heroine. Towards the end a line of Mohana, Shuddha Saaveri and Madhyamavati also manifest to complete this pentatonic Guuhabedam set. Listen to th-cam.com/video/XyoYafFOxwg/w-d-xo.html 3:33 timecode. Enna Samayalo is my all time fav wordplay (swara-play) song very witty, if I am right Raaja sir penned the lyrics himself. And Sir’s attention to detail by wrapping the song in Madhyamavathi - elaiyai podadi penne mangalam is an absolute gem. You observation of voice doodling in both the films + the jathis used to converse with the house butler, bang-on!! Resonates so well with some us who grew up in the classical music and dance environment! Thank you for this 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
