The original clefs are not shown but from the tessitura it is likely that the bass was written in F3, which implies downward transposition of a fourth, or C4, which means "Transpose this down a fifth." If after that it comes up a tone for the pitch change it wouldn't be wrong. What is certain is that it is substantially lower than here sung, because they ignored the transposing effect of some clef configurations. The sound would therefore have been richer.
