    Great drone footage over site where once stood the world's largest port! Now my 2020s decade, this site is redevelopment to post-modern architecture with construction largely since the start of the Millennium. Incidental but easily walkable to where I've lived now in Greenwich over the last 20 years since the start of this millennium ! Incidentally this distance walkable perhaps easily under the Thames as one of the world's first tunnels ever walkable under a river!

    Did you get any hassle while filming? I filmed the other day in that park in Canada Square, by the Citigroup building. I was in Woolwich prior, where I used the app on my mini 3 RC to request permission to fly. When I was in Canada Sq, the app said ‘take off approved’ so I set max height to 58M and had a little fly around!!

    What's the highest tower here? And are there any more towers scheduled to be built in this area? Really impressive considering only 30 years ago Canary Wharf had only one skyscraper.

    • @djtrainspotter
      @djtrainspotter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1 Canada Square tower is 774ft 53 office floors. Landmark Pinnacle is 765ft - 77 floors . . . Loads more planned!

    • @richardwills-woodward
      @richardwills-woodward 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 Canada Square is 784ft (there is an elevated section that you enter at ground level with shopping mall and 3 skyscrapers are built out of this). The 774ft figure is if you're standing above the shopping mall. The entrance however is at ground and it is 784ft to the tip. The height was going to be much higher except for the idiots that chose to build City Airport at the last minute. Not only did this stump Canary Wharf but it also put a ceiling on the City too of 1,000ft AOD or 951ft from ground level. The Shard is 1,026ft AOD (1,016ft above ground) due as I understand it, to a discrepancy.

    In some aspects Canary Wharf is better than the - La Defense - of Paris. Principally in its more - like Manhattan - buildings. But La Defense have more open perspectives.

    It's the same as the square mile. Can't go higher than than the shard due to airport. How is it other cities go sky high 🤔🤔

    • @richardwills-woodward
      @richardwills-woodward 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because they were stupid enough to build City Airport when they had the opportunity to build an entire piece of city from scratch!

    • @thisguy976
      @thisguy976 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardwills-woodward I can understand Canary Wharf with a limit on height, however, I don't understand the square mile limit? Surely the aeroplanes could just re-route away from the airspace over the square mile? Like I can imagine other buildings similar in height to the Shard should be allowed to be built there.

    • @richardwills-woodward
      @richardwills-woodward 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thisguy976 Because planes land into the wind. When the wind direction blows from the east, the planes at all airports change to landing from the west instead of the more common east. The planes' approach circles over the City and surrounding airspace at 2,000ft before descending to City on the glide path with specific planes that give special dispensation to fly over Canary Wharf at no less than 600ft above the tip of One Canada Square/804ft AOD (above ordinance datum which is average sea level). This is 1,000ft (or possibly 1,025ft given the Shard is 1,025ft AOD) but this is reduced to 1,000ft over the City due to a hill that the City is built on. The tallest building in the City will be 951ft (1,000ft AOD) and that will be (if it gets built) the replacement for one of the buildings next to the Bishopsgate Tower that has just finished at 912ft/962ft AOD.
      Heathrow is also an issue, as this is used to ensure that Heathrow glide paths can also go as low as 2,000ft when going east to west (the usual path of planes landing into Heathrow). But you could alter this, you cannot alter City Airport. The City is just too close to City Airport. Most planes require 1,000ft clearance or 600ft in City Airport's planes' case.
      Unless City Airport is closed, London's limit (just like Singapore) will be the Shard or 1,016ft AGL (above ground level). Seeing as the Shard sits on the lowest ground possible, the likelihood is around 950ft will be London's limit. However, that is the least of the issues - councils despise these heights anyway. Paddington 800ft skyscraper got canned due to 'height concerns' - we now have an unremarkable cube. Canary Wharf has Tower Hamlets council that [hate] Canary wharf with a passion. Very modest buildings get proposed for 784 ft like South quay Plaza - they chop it down to 704ft for absolutely no good reason. Very modest 500ft tower just got rejected for no reason at the south side of Millwall Dock. Another just got chopped down which was FEC's project that has got planning but went from 700-750ft to 650ft. As if at this location that makes a difference. It is infuriating that a skyscraper district can't just dream....at all. This is why you keep getting boxes in London. The costs and the fear of council rejection has just seen height deflation not inflation. The end aesthetic is blobs that can't 'soar' but just bloat and cram together. Tragic really.
