Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, is a perfect town to stay in for a few days while visiting nearby Portofino and Cinque Terre. Santa Margherita is a beautiful seaside town with many hotels in all price ranges, and excellent restaurants, in a beautiful setting with a seashore promenade and colorful marina. The Old Town of Santa Margherita is a pedestrian zone that will charm you with historic buildings, baroque church, piazzas and pizzas. Excellent transportation connections by bus, rail and ferry will connect you with those nearby attractions of Portofino and Cinque Terre. Consider staying at the Laurin Hotel, four-stars on the water, or pick from many other choices.
Santa Margherita is now on my bucket list.
I found your video while searching for this town. when I was 22 I traveled solo there. I paused the video at the train station....it takes me back, the warm breeze felt so good, I was sitting on that bench reading short stories by Fitzgerald and this older nice gentleman, an italian, commented with so-so english on my book and said how his wife also liked Fitzgerald. For some reason that moment always stuck with me. Can't wait to go back there someday!

1billwill Glad to show this town because Sànta Margherìta Lìgure is one of those places sometimes overlooked because of its famous neighbors, Portofino and Cinque Terre, but it is just as lovely as they are, and less touristic.

We stayed in Santa Margherita just where you filmed about a block west of the restaurant you ate at. Passeggiata is the best here. We cooked fresh swordfish steaks in our 4th floor apt across from the entry to the Basilica. One night a base and accordion player serenaded the neighborhood through our dinner.
Dave, that sounds like heaven, with dinner music no less. Santa Margherita is the least famous of towns along that coast, but makes the best place to stay.

Going to "Santa" in June and cannot wait. Coming in thru Genoa airport. I understand I can take the train from there "Santa", is that true? Easy to find? As I do not speak Italian. Nevertheless, I am sooo excited about going there as it's my first trip to Italy in about 35 yrs.
No train at the airport. I suggest you take a taxi from the Genoa airport direct to your hotel in SML, just 24 km and about $70, so easy. Otherwise, you can take train, but first, taxi from airport to Genoa Principe Station, wait for train, take train to SML then taxi to your hotel. Taxi direct is better, especially after a long flight. Rome2Rio is a good website for figuring all options. You will love that area, Portofino to Cinque Terre, and SML is fine also.
Does the train eastward from Nice head up in the mountains towards Turin or does it continue along the coast? Just curious. Your videos are very nice and informative. You've traveled to so many places!
Thanks. The main train from Nice to Liguria goes along the coast, via Genoa, not Turin.
Eating dinner waaay to early man. I wouldn't have even thought about food until around 9:00 at the earliest. But whatever!

The pronunciation is: Sànta Margherìta Lìgure (not Ligùre hahaha) and more: as usual stranger people makes a big confusion commenting with a southern italian or neapolitan or sicilian music the description of a northern italian town as Genoa or Florence or Venice and so and so....! It would be the same if you comment a report in New York with a mexican music, or a report about Paris with a polish music!!!! Ligurian culture and music is closer to France or Milan or Turin than the South of Italy!

Too commercial, too many tourists, too much traffic
Much less touristic than nearby Portofino and Cinque Terre, although those are wonderful also. Best seen in the shoulder season.
Tourist area is - - what do you expect to see????? I ve been to zoos around the world them are just as bad, or good depends
