- Diagnosed with autism and non-verbal, Janevi's world moves at double speed, evident in how her hands dance quickly as she sets up her art tools, sketches, and packs away everything in just five minutes. Instant noodles, the 19-year-old’s favourite comfort food, would have cooked faster if she had her way.
Janevi graduated from a special education school in December 2023 and is now on the waiting list for enrolment into sheltered workshop. To help her navigate this transition, her parents enrolled her in ESH@Tampines, an initiative by SG Enable in partnership with SPD. Janevi’s grandma accompanies her to the centre where she spends her days meaningfully, shelving books at the public library, creating crafts, and attending workshops on life skills and mindfulness. She loves the organised community activities which her loving family accompanies her to. The playground in front of Tampines West Community Club where ESH@Tampines operates out of is also a big draw for Janevi.
At the start of each new chapter in life, uncertainty is inevitable. For Janevi, her family’s love is a guiding light, reminding us to face new beginnings with courage and optimism, no matter what lies ahead.
