We should make an album about the giant mine massacre, pop out a fresh band. Def temporary.. last minute alive. I have a sample its insane. My dad was involved in the controversy. Look it up. Half the victims were probably from bc.
I never knew how much i needed someone saying stuff like "scale sequence" , what chord tones are being played, giving tips on technique, etc etc while practicing until today. You some kind of wizard dude???
Hey Dean, I'm an intermediate guitarist and have been playing around with this exercise for the past few days. Something about it + your advice throughout the video really made alternate picking click in a way that had been eluding me, and I'm now suddenly able to play riffs that were beyond me just a week ago because I wasn't fully alternate picking them. So thanks for making this available!!
This boosted my playing so much in such a short time. A couple of days ago I was really struggleing at the speed where you thought about your lunch. Now I can play the second fastest part pretty cleanly and can somewhat play it to full speed (with a lot of mistakes but I'm getting there :D) Awesome stuff!
Thanks for doing these Dean, you have the vibe of a supportive yoga instructor lol. I'm wondering if using your pinky as an anchor point helps consistancy with the further string skips.
this specific exercise is a section from the song A Dark Horizontal, so it's already part of an existing song, but yeah it would be cool if some of them were part of future songs
Been using this workout the past few days and even though I feel like alternate picking has always come naturally to me, this is a crazy left hand endurance workout. I have yet to make it even to the last speed without my hand cramping and having to stop. 100% keeping this in my routine until I can play it all the way though
Thank you for this! There aren’t that many tech death type alt picking its almost always solo stuff. I wish you also did a vid on 8 string patterns, specially drop EA since I also use that tuning 😊
So true, once I memorized the lick it became impossible to not economy pick it. And it makes me wonder, what's the point of forcing alternate picking when you can use the more efficient way?
@@Rayman120 depends on the riff i would say. in this case you pretty much always downslant your pick. once you economy pick that one note, you upslant the riff on the next repetition until you reach this note again. now you cant economy pick this note because you're playing the entire thing differently. so wether you're economy picking or not, you're always gonna end up alternate picking this riff eternally, either downslanting constantly or upslanting once the riff repeats.
Thank you, this is a really good practice for me, I'm good with downpicking but I haven't practiced my alternate so I really suck, I guess now it's time to start with it
This is fun. Still getting accustomed to 8 string so this is a real work out but so familiar to me from my all my previous learning, I think I'm just going to stay in standard tuning for my 8 string adventure. Alternate tuning were hurting my brain, felt like a drug trip (and not a good one).
Perfect. Any chance you can go over some techniques the Grateful Dead use? I notice your Jerry influence frequently, so it would be great to dive deeper into this approach.
I'm playing this on a six string, so I saw the two bottom strings with no notes and I was very confused why it didn't sound right over the video until I realized my problem is that I'm not playing an eight string
I am playing guitar for 16 years and I have no problems with other techniques, except fast alternate picking. My left hand is fast, I can do fast legato runs with it, but my right hand (wrist) can't go fast. I TRIED EVERYTHING. I played FOR HOURS for a lot of time, my right hand is not getting any faster. I know how to practice, how to play etc. But no matter how much I practiced on my sync and right hand, the wrist can't go fast. HELP!
I feel ya! I've been playing for about 20 years now and it didn't come easily to me either. It's easy to cheat the metronome with legato. If you want to be able to alt pick at speed, you need to spend time practicing at the awkward BPMs and clean it up - dial in the exact BPM and phrases where the sync between left and right fails. I could pick fast on the low strings but my technique would fall apart on the middle and higher strings. It was fine below ~140bpm, but above that the technique needed refining. I had to spend a long time (years, even) practicing at speeds that I felt uncomfortable doing. Another thing - don't practice slow! It's fine to learn the patterns at 10% speed, but then you've gotta kick it up to 70-80% and refine it. The technique is different when it's slow! I wish I'd realised that earlier.
I thought I had decently intermediate technique but gah dayum this shit got me struggling on the second speed theres no way in hell ill ever get fast enough for the last burh what
Definitely for me, it's about my picking hand, because I'm like a hybrid picker and really need help with the ups and downs. 🤘 🎸 What tuning are you in -George
Truly the Bob Ross of death metal.
😂
I thought I'd leave a comment. But nothing beats this statement right here lmao
Such a calming influence.
And here’s a happy little harmonic minor over here
Except in the hair department 😂
God this riff at full speed is the bane of my existence
Same bro... Same
I was about to send you the vid

That background really screams "Im in a tech death band"
I've been practicing your sweep picking routine and it's working wonders, thank you. Can't wait to sit down and learn this exercise.
Hi brother .. I gotta find that video 😅😅🎸 thanks

Yeah, it helped me a lot too. And the best thing is that these exercises actually Sound cool
I never knew how much i needed someone saying stuff like "scale sequence" , what chord tones are being played, giving tips on technique, etc etc while practicing until today.
You some kind of wizard dude???
Feels like I'm in a really stressful level of Mario rn

Thank you so much for this exercise. Now I'm gonna rip it off and use it as my riff in my song. Thank you.
Been using this a ton, even played it with doubling the notes then playing it with triplets - Thanks for this!

Awesome stuff!
Not gonna lie Dean Lamb and Jeff Loomis have became my top two favorite guitarist 🔥🔥🔥
A Dark Horizontal
My favourite song🤙
Loving the new content, please more like this.

Imagine if some of these exercises are actually riffs from the next album and Dean was secretly letting us preview it without telling us.
Well when it gets to 120bpm he says we’re almost at song tempo so maybe

Actually got halfway through today! This has been great for my alternate picking.
I love your three camera setup. It's so good for learning your technique.
Who's gonna grab their guitar and try this today 😅🎸!!! Join me 🤘🤘🤘 true guitar practicers
'Camp Councillor Dean' is my favourite Dean.
Such a great exercise and melodic too
Awe thanks Dean. Love that you make this soothing.
Always appreciate exercises that sound musical and interesting. Definitely running this today
Thank you for this! There aren’t that many tech death type alt picking its almost always solo stuff. I wish you also did a vid on 8 string patterns, specially drop EA since I also use that tuning 😊
God it took some serious focus to not economy pick that last phrase

These videos are awesome as someone who is still new at guitar. Thank you!!!
This exercise is amazing thx dean iam not good enough for 120 speed but hopefully ill get there someday
Thank you for this, Dean! I love the multiple camera angles.
this is one of my favorite exercises thank you
Playing along with my bass 👍👍
Thank you, this is a really good practice for me, I'm good with downpicking but I haven't practiced my alternate so I really suck, I guess now it's time to start with it
Practiced the legato workout for a while and it feels amazing. Thank you for these videos!
just as I was looking for a new workout dean uploads
thanks dean. we need more of this. :)
Definitely going to have try this out today 😮. Thanks Dean!
perfect workout for almost all skill levels!!!!!!
This is awesome - would be nice to see the 7th and 8th strings incorporated as well
This is a 🔥🔥🔥 workout thanks dean I love you
This is awesome content - trying to get my bass playing to Jared’s level, so these technical exercises are great practice!
Thanks, Dean! I love this workout.
Thank you, feel like I need to work on my fluency at high speeds
This is great, I'll be practicing this.
more of those PLEASE
I suck at guitar and never practice, but this is hella fun and enjoyable.
These are great- I'm a piano player mostly, but I've been trying to learn the layout of the guitar better!
I need to seriously THANK YOU for this practice lesson. I can now finally play laid to rest the fast scale part always messed me up
The way you're talking over this reminds me of that old Frank Gambale video that was like, Richard Simmons style.
Going to do it RIGHT NOW! ❤
Dude, I love this shit!! Please do more!! Excellent video!!
Such a great Canandian

The reggaeton beat would fit perfectly for that exercise 😂
This is dark horizontal - recognized it right away

😂
Finally a fun workout ❤
this hasn't worked out my picking hand at all D: but man my fretting hand is getting the workout of its life doing this
Thanks!
cant wait to try this when i get home, full tempo gonna beat my ass 😅
I got the 3 first speeds down pretty well, but those last 2, goddamn. I can't follow those. Both my left and right hand can't comprehend that anymore
oh this my type of shit... keep em coming Dean!
This is what i need rn
Cool exercise, but does it make sense to have an alternate picking workout with only even numbers of notes per string?
This melody really reminds me of the ending of Stratosphere Serenade by Diablo Swing Orchestra!
4 days of doing this every day, managed to get to the 3rd speedup (most definitely not a good guitarist, we'll see by the first week)
Just play some protest the hero and thats a good everything exercise
It's 6am and I'm skipping yoga for this workout.
Do you move or roll your Finger in the "scale sequence" from 7 on the D string to 7 on the A string?
I was wondering the same ! This is the part I am having a little trouble getting to speed haha.
He rolls it. Slow it down you can see. He goes over the same idea in a video where he talks about sweep picking. Hope that helps 👍
The trick to alternate picking is to simply pick down after you pick up and vise versa ad nauseum ... simples.
Palm muting is a spectrum acknowledgment
Are you doing anything special when alternate picking with string skips?
I'm playing this on a six string, so I saw the two bottom strings with no notes and I was very confused why it didn't sound right over the video until I realized my problem is that I'm not playing an eight string

Silly question here, does tuning matter here? Or are we working on shape?
Definitely for me, it's about my picking hand, because I'm like a hybrid picker and really need help with the ups and downs. 🤘 🎸 What tuning are you in -George
Tuning shouldn’t matter as long as you aren’t in a drop tuning.
Any standard tuning should work
Thanks for the replies
tuning?
It's kind of like a tran-Siberian sounding scale haha
What song is this from?
Can I have your guitar? I need a guitar that good.
i got the speed. i don't got the stamina. not even close lmao
F# standard?
E standard works, it's only 6th string up
He only plays the top 6 so any standard tuning is fine
Thanks
omg bro is doing a mini bar chord with the ring finger before that scale modulation thing...disgusting technique.

In case @Dean Lamb wants to do a reaction video
