My coworker lives on 80 acres and their house has been robbed several times while they were at work during the daytime . You would think it wouldn’t be that way . They live seven miles out of town .
We bought our little homestead last October. It’s a work in progress. 4bed, 2bath raised ranch on 2.5 acres of land in NE PA. We absolutely love it. We have oil heat, but we supplement with wood & coal to keep the cost of oil down. I have a nice little raised bed garden now with 6 raised beds … we’re adding 4 more beds next year and an in-ground garden too (the garden god away from me this year…next year will be much better with a lot of planning involved!), and we have 20 laying chickens in a large coop with a big run (we can’t let them free range…too many predators around here…they should be laying any day now!). We’re thinking about goats or pigs next, but need to build a paddock and structure first. Our property butts up to a property-protected cow farm, so we don’t have to worry about them building homes on it (at least that’s what they say!). These are all wonderful tips that have my mind racing with ideas. Thank you!!! ❤ ❤
I love hearing about your plans! It is so nice to be surrounded by land! And I am jealous of your winter heating with wood. Our last home had a wood fireplace and it was so nice to keep costs down with that. And burning real wood just makes such a cozy atmosphere in the evenings:)
Sadly, people grab those homes quickly .I read somewhere that most people don't want a lot of yard to take care of.They want enough just for a barbecue, and that's it.Anytime they build anything by me, folks snatch those places .My friend calls them " reach out and touch me houses " 😅 because they are so CLOSE to each other that you can hardly put a fence up.❤
I spoke with a guy from the county because the developer behind us encroached on our property line. I asked why they would allow them to build homes so close together. He told me that people today don't want maintenance. They don't want to mow a lawn or take care of anything. In fact, he even said that townhomes are an even bigger attraction for these people because the home maintenance is taken care of by the HOA.
@MorganHillFarms yep that's what I heard. So many are slaving LONG hours to pay for these homes, and they don't want to spend what little time they have on yard work.I hope they put up a fence around those subdivisions and that will give added privacy as well. 🥰
Absolutely agree. We wanted a couple of acres and a smaller home when we moved to another state and found basically over 90% were HOAs! We are older so …🤷♀️ well I understand the pig smell as we had a second house in North Las Vegas and there was a pig farm a few miles away and we could ALWAYS tell when the wind changed! Oh well… Best of luck with your issues❤ between hurricanes and building around you and 🐷… Such great information! Thank you for all that you share!
Thank you so much. We are trusting God with this one. His plan is ultimately best. The pig smell is quite bad…..if this development goes in, I can only image the complaints we will get about this!
@ understood. Lots of people praying for your area! My heart aches for your whole region! Father, I ask that You would You bless and keep Your people. I ask that You will you keep them safe. I ask for provision and peace as they conquer this “giant” that is wreaking havoc on their area, land and homes. I ask for Your divine protection and for Your hand to reach the lost. Have mercy on this area where they are striving to be independent from this world and the people who would interfere with their quiet lifestyle. I am deeply troubled by their hardships and struggles but so deeply thankful that You are able to do even more than I can comprehend. I pray in Jesus Mighty Name. Amen.
I want to challenge our HOA over the no livestock. In Pickens county SC chickens are considered domesticated animals like a cat or dog. I want to challenge our HOA just to to do it. But a lot of us have nowhere to go cause the greedy developers buy up all the land to build mass neighborhoods. I'm glad we have an acre to grow fruit and veggies.
After doing this with animals and gardens for the past three years, I can say that gardens, perennials and fruit trees are the most bang for your buck. The will eventually pay you back over what you spent to establish them. The animals will cost more to house, feed and maintain than what it would cost to buy good quality organic eggs and dairy from a local farmer. Raising your own meat will be the only animal that will save you money to raise yourself. The problem comes in if eggs, meat and dairy are not available and you do t have your own source of those foods. If I was certain that dairy and eggs would always be available, I would eliminate those animals just because of the work and money it takes to maintain them.
We’re buying a house in Sumter SC, 8 acres but now as we get closer to closing I’m beginning to question whether or not it’s a good idea. From NY to SC there’s a big difference and I don’t know if I can do the homestead stuff.. I’m from Spain where they do a lot of farming but I have no experience whatsoever. Really hoping it works out
You can do it! It is a big change, but if I can come from where I was 3 years ago, I am certain that anyone can. Just take it as slow as you need to. Don’t try to take on a bunch of projects / animals / gardens at once…..unless you feel the need to. I’m rooting for you!!!
I grew up in Europe in the city and never liked going to the countryside. In the states lived in the suburbs until 2021 when we moved to the country, but much smaller lot than yours. The food you'll grow yourself doesn't compare with anything you'll buy at the store or even at some farm stand. You'll see. And with everything that's coming you'll be glad you have all that land. Best of luck!
I'm in WI and yesterday was in the 80's, 5 years ago we had almost 4 inches of snow on the same day, the midwest is nuts. lol There are so many developments in my area too, its crazy how fast they push through and go up.
We moved to the country last year in 2023 on 17.5 acres and love it! We made sure we moved to an area with generational homes with lots of land and absolutely no draw for developers. Don’t really think suburbanites and city folks are clambering to live next to the Dollar General 😂
I'm so glad to hear that. We bought in 2021 and thought we were rural enough but here we are now. We literally have 100s of acres of rural agricultural land all around us but developers have purchase a few substantial partials and are building on them. Makes you wonder who will be buying them:(
I would recommend becoming a licensed home daycare. If one is licensed, they need not open a daycare to prevent offenders on the list from moving within so far of your business😉 Also, some areas have minimum land sales on parcels, ours is 5 acres or more. This news must have had your mind racing! Trust that you have been a good steward of the land God blessed you with and He has a plan🤍 Blessings abound!
I do need to remember that God placed us here and that his plan is better than mine:) I am just praying that His plan doesn’t include townhomes next to me:)
My fall garden does not like these 80s in North Florida, lol.The thing is, we usually have cooler weather during this time.We host the Florida/ Georgia game, so the temps are comfortable. Yet you know fall crops don't like those temps. I probably will have to plant later, lord willing next time.
We found them on FB marketplace. We had to make a bit of a drive to get them, but they are the only way to keep our feed from spoiling since they aren't under any type of roof or cover. They also allow is to purchase bulk feed and keep our prices low!

Sadly these cases are often someone they know, or a relative/drinking buddy of someone they trust.
That is scary! I would’ve assumed they would be pretty safe out there but maybe like the first commenter said…Perhaps it was someone they knew.
Love to listen to you , love your channel ❤ , very inspiring !!!
Thank you! That is so nice to hear:) I am glad you are enjoying it.

Many towns and cities also have Community Gardens. Great way to get experience and learn from seasoned fellow gardeners. No HOA to encroach on you.
That is a fantastic idea! Thank you for sharing:)

/ i live in upstate and sick of all the traffic here since everyone decided to move here to the carolinas.

Wow! I would not have thought that WI would still be so warm. That is crazy. The weather has become quite unpredictable.
Great tips!
I am glad you found them helpful!

It is incredibly warm here. My brassicas are doing great except for my boo chop, which bolted about a week ago!
@MorganHillFarms I didn't plant that one for fall.I planted that right before spring, and it did great.
Where do find the pickles containers for feed? Thanks. Blessings.

Do you make your own sour dough starter. Ive tried several times with no success.
Yes! It is just flour and water. I used a method from homesteading family on YT. It worked well and I’m still using the same starter 3 years later.
Did you see what's happening to my property on my last video? Oh, it gets worse. New renters which I can't talk about on social media. 🙄🙄
I’m going to check it out!
Which part you are ?Wishes to become yours Neighbors if have kindness .
