  • The treadle hammer designed by Clay Spencer is something that sees almost daily use in the blacksmith shop. While we have seen its use several times, I thought we might look at some of the tooling used with the treadle hammer..

    I just took Clay's Table Making blacksmithing class at John C. Campbell last year. It was a great class. Clay is in his 80s now and I noticed the classes he is teaching this coming year will have another teacher with him. I think he is beginning to train his replacement. Clay also has a power hammer tool making class that he offers at his home in Alabama every so often. As well as he works with forges to make his style of tire power hammer. We seem him a lot at AACB blacksmithing meetings and events since we are in middle Tennessee. I still need to make myself a treadle hammer.

    Hi John ; Love learning of tooling .As a 67 year old beginner since New Year beginner loving your videos .
    Thing I might build a small treadle hammer or motorize hammer as I am old now no problem swinging my 2 lb. crosspeen (yet) .Know I could speed up my work and thinking might help get improved produce.I as only a hobbist .
    Learning the link or hardy hole to hold tooling was good info.
    Thank you Sir

    How timely was that. I am half way through building a Clay Spenser Treadle Hammer and to see some of the tools you use was excellent. Thank you John. I got the plans from ABANA and they were most considerate in that they recognised slow mail to Australia so also sent a pdf via email. The plans are excellent and worth the cost.

    Great video John,I have the mz75 powerhammer wich can be ran in treadlehammer mode and make really light blows,definitely a great tool to have,I need to come up with a safety stop of some kind so I can also use handheld tooling without the chance of being injured as well,I do think I will build a treadle hammer some day though just because you know a guy cant have to many tools. As always,Thanks for sharing and have a awesome day!

      Careful with a stop on an air hammer. The air cylinder is more likely to drive past the stop than foot power would be.

      @@BlackBearForge that is certainly a concern of mine also,I at one point thought of maybe a extended set of dies with a stop but I'm sure that would get in the way quickly,if I dont come up with a way that is useful as well as safe with a stop I will just continue to hold the tools with tongs or vise grips. Thanks for the tip

    Great Video John..... I have a question, All the blacksmith videos keeps showing the blacksmith putting and taking from around their anvil base. Just curios what you have installed to manage tools around the base of your anvil..... I need help with managing/organizing my workspace and would love seeing what you have created to make your life easier....

    • @dgtlmoon
      @dgtlmoon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think... it's not all THAT important... important is to have the one or two hammers/whatever's you are going to use ready and laid out to go.... as john says.. do a couple of rehearsal runs before you do the work. the rest of the hammers can rest on a wall rack/whatever on a shelf on a wall or couple of meters away

    • @ghostforge3303
      @ghostforge3303 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dgtlmoon Sound advice. I have my workspace outside on my patio, so alot of my tools have to be covered to prevent weather and porch-pirates from getting at them. I have made a few tool boxes for storage, but haven't figured out just yet what makes a good prep surface around my anvil and forge that doesn't get in the way and attract clutter....

      @@ghostforge3303 This is one of those things that are kind of specific to how you work, and commonly used tools in your perticular smithy. One thing that seems to be very common is a small bar that mounts with bolts, or is drivin into the stump. Looks sort of like a barn door pull, or drawer pull to slide a few sets of tongs on, ot even a few commonly used hammers. One thing I like to have is a hole drilled in the side at a slight downward angle that I can set a center punch in. I often hang my brush on the punch also, so it's double duty. I've also seem horse shoes mounted to hold hammers, and those are quite nice once bent upward a little to cradle the hammer head.
