Gay Marshall is just sublime. I was lucky to see you perform the role of Mistoffelees a few years ago, you really were magical. :-) I always used to love Quaxo singing The old Gumbie cat, and his tap dance off with Jenny. It was a great number that really built up towards that point, i was disappointed to see it was shortened in later years. Did you always play Mistoffellees or did you play other roles in the show?
jonathan clay I did start up as a cover in Paris mostly for Alonzo and Carbucketty They could not give out Mistoffolees without the approval of mrs Lynn but the original Paris Mistoffolees and his cover got injured just a few weeks after I started rehearsals and I had to jump in the role.... and kept it

(I *THINK* that's another thing that set the Broadway & North American tours apart from other productions, aside from experimenting with it during rehearsals for the Original Broadway production that drumroll ended up on the cutting room floor and instead the chorus sang while he descended.

Danny Eyheralde it’s a little more complicated than this... The production closed because of lack of audiences due to bad advertising. The producers were not used to how things work in France, different from America or United Kingdom. Musicals were not very popular back then and if not advertised regularly, people just thought we were not playing anymore. FYI: Les Misérables opened 2 years after we closed and at a different venue (and didn’t last as long as we did)

I noticed in some of the earlier CATS productions like this one , that a weird flying saucer or something lights up and rises in the middle of the overture and the lights spin round, what was the purpose of that and how did it fly (wires)?
Danny Eyheralde of course they had to make a complete new version of the lyrics as the ones we used in 1989 were copyrighted Same thing happened between the original Vienna and Hamburg productions
I don't like Revival, the version 1989 is far better, especially when comparing the new Tagger-rapper and the old Tagger-rocker. I prefer the old French version 1989. By the way, I didn't like new Mistoffeles too.
@@Mur10050 I liked very much the 2016 French version in Mogador theater. It was wonderful. But I agree, I much more prefer the Rum Tum Tugger rocker than the rapper one. But this latter interpretation was interesting,nevertheless.
There were quite a few understudies as this was taken during a matinee towards the end of the run. There was another video made with almost completely different cast but I don’t own it
