I'd always wanted to see how the orginal version was choreographed, it's really interesting, because even though the music has changed, you can still recognised certain elements, especially towards the end of the number.
I don't know about y'all but I love this Rumpleteazer. Her design and voice are very so adorable and she's just as mischievous as her future counterparts!😻
I still hate it after the 11 years it’s been on TH-cam, I just can’t seem to like it, I just really prefer the other version, also this version (with a couple tweaks) is in the new cats film which I’m not a fan of
I remember watching this programme when it aired! I had just turned 18 at the time, and watching this little segment of CATS was the beginning of my love affair with this amazing musical. I immediately went out and bought the double cassette tape of the Original London Cast, and until about 2000 played it to bits everywhere, especially in the car. When it died I bought the double CD and now it resides on the USB stick I keep in the car. What I love about the original cast is that they peformed this song exactly how they sang it on stage - sheer professionalism.
Interesting that they went with this version in that unspeakable 2019 film...I personally really like the tune. Not as much as the current version but it's really catchy still. That movie is undeniably terrifying tho.
When I first listened to the new movie soundtrack, I was confused at the new arrangements, but then I realize that they were following the original “jazz” version, not the more popular “vaudevillian” version.
The lovely Bonnie Langford! A great talent in British Theatre and TV - she was even in the film of Bugsy Malone. She was totally made for the original production of CATS. Think of the talent in that first cast - Bonnie, Wayne Sleep, Sarah Brightman, Brian Blessed, Paul Nicholas... the list goes on. The original London production was the only place to see CATS. It has become so ‘Disneyfied’ over the years people think the original costumes are too strange. I love how abstract they used to look before the whiskers and tons of greasepaint.
@@RossM3838 excellent point! Sorry for the oversight. Her performance of the white cat’s solo dance on An Evening With Andrew Lloyd Webber is stunning!
The new version is much catchier but Thorton and Bonnie Langford laid it down and set quite a standard. Fast and funny with great chemistry. Dr. Who was not her element. Her more recent performance in 42nd street is also a lot of fun.
I personally prefer the other version. I'm not saying this version is bad, but to me the way the lyrics are arranged with the melody seems a bit awkward and rushed. And the different parts don't really seem to go together in the full melody. But that's just me. I still don't have anything against this older version. I see it as development of the music.
I see it exactly the other way round, which is odd, but then I listened to this all alot when I was about 3 years old and only just started listening to it again. I heard the other version and thought it wasn't nearly so good!
Nope nope nope nope, l have listened to this song since l was 11 and if there was one question l could ask ALW is, why oh why did you change this song? every dance move and lyric is perfection and Bonny Langford and partner sprinkled thier fairy dust all over it to one of my favourite dance routines ever.,the choreographer who worked tirelessly on every perfect move to go with every perfect lyric is and absolute genius!! Thankyou for uploading this, this is how it was on day one and how it should still be now. What a crying shame. P.s I'm sure Lord Webber knows what he's doing and had his reasons for changing it but in my opinion this is and should still be how the performance should be to this day.
@@crazycrumblesasmr3311 Yea, the "other" version is a straight-up nerf. This is far more musical, difficult, and generally impressive than the "later" rendition; which is odd, since such a triad is the heart of music theatre
I love that even though it's changed there's still bits of the old choreography, and the iconic Rumple jumping into Mungo's arms on his hip is still the same. Also there's something to say about the movie using this version of the music rather than the version most people are used to (this whole thing is in 4/4 while the version from at least 83 on ward has parts that are in 7/8). I think that they could have made it work in the movie but something wasn't communicated properly and this song was sorta killed in the movie. Sad because I quite enjoy this recording
I love the oldschoolness of this :) But I'm just so grown together with the film version that it's the "original" for me. This is kind of so mysterious, if you know what I mean, because this has been the first version and now they don't use it anymore.
I love this version and 1998's version very much! Bonnie was only 17 years old! She and Jo Gibb are best Rumpleteazer! ❤️ But John Tornton died in 1993. 😔
Not my favorite version I do absolutely love the version now, but I do have appreciation of how Andrew Lloyd Webber at first envisioned this as these two sly smooth burglars
The Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer routine has changed quite a bit from the original cast. So has the tune they sing. It's much more athletic than it was originally and the tune is more robust.
@LaurLaurtheNEKO No. Its a matter of opinion. I Like the original london cast because the costumes left more up to the imagination and made you pay more attention to their dancing/movement/ etc. You know Bonnie was only 16 when she was casted in this role?
This is not the original theater. I saw the London version in 1983 which was not quite 1981. The show I saw did not have Elaine Paige but it had those two and I thought they were the best characters in the show..ohhh... I love them!
God blessed them with a gift! May they continue to use that gift to glorify the Lord Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone everywhere!! 💕
This is my version! :) I didn't even know there was another version till I watched the movie and was liek "Whaaa??" To me this version's better cause I know it....and I LOVE Bonnie!! So yeah there's my 2 cents
Yes, a lot of the dancing is the same. This song has undergone a lot of changes through the years especially when it came to broadway and misto sang it while two cats did a pantomine.

This version is the one I grew up with - when I first heard the altered version a couple of years ago, my thought was WTF?! Don’t tamper with perfection.
Rumpleteazer was only about 17 in 1981, and while Mungojerrie was 37 in 1981 so Teazer was 20 years younger than Mungojerrie so yes, Teazer is way younger than Mungo.
pinkfeiry It is good... But I’m glad we have the version we have today! It is far more memorable. It was stuck in my head nonstop the first time I heart it!! XD
Would you believe, circa 1984 both my dear parents would cheer for the silly Spit the Dog, and jeer this lovely, beautiful "cat", Bonnie Langford? Well, I'm glad tastes aren't always inherited.
In our production we were taught that she just admired him. We did not get told to play related as brother and sister. I mainly saw her as my best friend. Definitely not as twins, which is a suggestion I read about a lot as well. The "special" costume for the number is indeed similar, as are their wigs and make-up, but their basic costumes are not. I don't know why..
(I'm on my sister's account) I know that! I have seen the show live but not everyone can and the DVD is the only thing they have. And how does liking a different version of a song make you a fake fan?
its okay by comment that you commented on was suppose to be a reply to some one else but they removed their comment. Hence the confusion no need to be sorry. :)

I officially can't do Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer anymore without saying 'luck' like Bonnie did and puffing up my cheeks after hurricane.
And then she went off to join The Doctor....
Do you think the reason they couldn't have Mel and k9 in doctor who at the same time is cause Mel is secretly a cat so they wouldn't get along?
speaking of which, the cats in cats do remind me of Catkind, you know the cat people from new savannah
Dr who took no advantage of bonnie’s real abilities. It’s like having little Richard come to your home and having him fix your car.
