- Japan is often perceived as a cohesive ethnic country, in which its predominant ethnic group is the Yamato or Wajin. The term Yamato marks social and cultural differences from other ethnic groups; and the concept of “pure blood” as criteria for the uniqueness of the Yamato, would begin to spread in Japan around 1880 in which was initially used to justify the conquest of Asia.
We’ve spoke of the Ainu on my previous video - which you can find linked in the description - and today we look at those still fighting to be recognised as an indigenous group, the Okinawans/Ryūkyū.
