Hey guys! I feel like the video did not explain the Soga’s reason for promoting Buddhism enough. They had lots of connections to immigrants and the mainland through their trade relationships. Adopting Buddhism would gain them massive support from the immigrant population.
Also, Chinese Buddhism came with a lot of Chinese ideas. Like when you marry someone, you don’t just get that person, you get his/her entire family. You don’t just get Buddhism, you get exposed to Chinese ideas about government and how to run things, especially the idea that the state should have one all-powerful sovereign. The Soga particularly liked that idea, and would work to make that happen... =)

Read from the Kujaku manga (comic) how Buddha becomes a god in Japan's pantheon called Dai-Ichi, which means "Great One". Quite as you mentioned turning Him into a sort of kami. Coincidentally, there was a bank by the same name later on, so maybe the Bank's founders were Buddhist....but I'm just guessing here and connecting the dots. :)

The statue that was brought over was said to be thrown into a river to protect it from destruction. It rose once from the water to present itself to Shotoku Taishi. Eventually the statue was rescued from the water and carried on the back of a devout Buddhist all the way to present day Nagano prefecture, housed in a temple where it remains today. Being of legendary importance, the statue isn't available for public viewing, but a replica was made that makes appearances on occasion. There are pictures of it.

    • @Linfamy
      @Linfamy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Haha thanks. So in my defense, I meant traditional power as in deriving your power from religion, as opposed to leaders who were good administrators.
I picked a Buddhist temple to represent a religion, any religion. But you're right, I should've picked a shrine instead since the traditional clans were not Buddhists, they practiced kami worship.

Buddhism is originally Indian. Buddha was an Indian man. So although it was imported from China, China imported it from India. Buddhism is actually Indian culture that reached Japan via China and Korea. It's misleading to portray as if this came from China, because it is originally from India. Like many other things that originally did not come from "China", because at the time those were separate kingdoms that had their own names and cultures.
Also describing significant immigrant flows as solely "Chinese and Korean" is false. Because they adapted to Japan and mixed with the Japanese. They became Japanese themselves over-time and only spoke and knew Japanese language and culture. There were also migrant flows from Mongolia and North East Asia as well as to a lesser extent from South East Asia via the Philippines, Taiwan and the Ryukyus.

gamevalor If we were to get ride of the modern nationalist perspective entirely from historical analysis, despite finding its ancient root in subcontinent and the particular branch that spreads into Japan being heavily sinicized, Buddhism can be labeled neither Indian nor Chinese, and the history we are talking about can also not be called Japanese. Arguably, none of those identities came into existence until Early Modern time.

    • @tat3179
      @tat3179 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually, while Buddha is from India, the form of Buddhism that East Asia practices is quite different from the ones practiced in India, South East Asia and Sri Lanka, the East Asian is of the Mahayana School and the South and South East Asian, the Thevarada School. See, when Buddhist ideas traveled into East Asia, the Chinese simply made Buddha into a God, added him into their existing religious pantheons and then added even more Boddhisivas into the Buddhist pantheon, for example, adding Kuan Yin into the mix.
So to say that it came from China is very accurate, because the Buddhism that Japan practices differs greatly from the ones Indians practices.

kei chan kei chan I don’t know what’s your point here? Whose points are you disputing ? Those of the OP or Ng Yee Tat? Yes. The majority of the population in India do not practice Buddhism today. But Buddhism did originate from the subcontinent to which we refer as India and Nepal in English today. There are also attempts to revive Buddhism in India. Anyway, it not like facts are important to you. I just don’t want my and other people’s reasoned disagreement towards the OP to be discredited by trolling comments like yours just because your comments could be perceived as being on the same side as ours.

I think the second bomb was conveyed, not from China, but from its land of origin, India. Oh, and yes, it did stop in China and Korea, on the way. Of course by the time it reached Japan it was somewhat modified from its original form. And as we can see in the "Zen" version, it proceeded to be even further modified in its new home.

On Star Wars vs Star Trek, I say both. I grew up watching both of them so the debate never made sense to me XD. Star Wars (the original) was the only one I saw until I was about 13 and therefore has been my favorite. Star Trek on the other hand was a big part of my life, with Next Generation being my favorite. I watched every season and new part (aside from Deep Space 9).

So pretty much the same story as how the germanic franks became christian. germanic tradition has this concept of "Heil", which is a power you inherit and are born with, but which you have to maintain through personal honour and courage for your entire life. E.g. warriors would only follow someone with the victors heil into battle. Possessing said heil meant that the warlord would be invincible in war, as long as he stays worthy of it (though pretty much every profession has its own heil). There also was a kings heil, which was of utter importance in order to rule. When the new upstart power of the hausmeier (servants of the palace) family Karolinger decided to take over not only the power, but also the title of king from the old Merowinger dynasty, they couldn't by old tribal and religious law, hence they turned towards the christian church to give them divine legitimacy for becoming kings. Hence from that point onwards all future kings and also the kings of the frankish successor empires (mainly france and the hre) became kings of gods grace and the franks began to convert the rest of the germanic pagans, in their own and other tribes, by force - as following the old religion pretty much inclined disputing the king actually being a king. So a lot of similarity in that the new upstart power, that was in closer contact to another, culturally more advanced civilization took on and utilized a foreign religion to break the old system of power and legitimize their own new position of dominance.

At least one point is certain, that is, from the pre -Qin dynasty, there have been 4 times large -scale immigrants from Chinese Han people to enter the Japanese islands and Korean Peninsula, which have a profound impact on the historical trends of China and Japan and ( Korean Peninsula ).
    Focus on reference materials :
Asuka Period in Japanese history (538-710 AD)
Nara period (710-794) in early Japanese history )
The Chinese carefully taught the primitives of Japan (and korea) at the time to teach the knowledge of rice, cutting wells, manufacturing agricultural tools, spreading medicine, textiles and other knowledge. They pushed Japan from the brutal primitive society to a slave society.
Chinese Han people's four large -scale immigrants enter the Japanese islands record :
    1. Qin and Han Dynasty
Qin Shihuang (秦始皇 259-210 BC) swept the six regions. In order to escape the war, the Chinese people fled to Japan in two ways: Some Chinese people crossed the sea from the Northeast to the Korean Peninsula to Japan. Japan.
    2. During the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties (420 -589 BC)
During the period of "Upheaval of the Five Barbarians 五胡亂華", in order to avoid the war, the Chinese people began a wave of migration to a large -scale migration around.
Most of the fleeing Chinese finally went to Japan, forming the climax of immigration to Japan. The representative is Liu Azhi (劉阿知), the descendant of Emperor Han Xian(漢獻帝).
    3. The Sui and Tang Dynasties (581-907 BC)
Japan sent a large -scale Tang ambassador to China to visit China, while China sent a large number of people to spread advanced technology and culture to Japan. Most of these people are monks or cultural scholars. They are left as required by the Japanese because of the difficult sailing and welcomed by Japan. They often stay and "domestication" into the Japanese. The representative is the monk Jianzhen(監真).
    4. The Song (960-1279)and Ming dynasties(1368-1644)
In the Yuan Dynasty, the Han people in the southern Song Dynasty broke their families. In order to avoid the war and kill, they moved to Japan one after another. The representative of this period was scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty - Lanxi Daolong(蘭溪道隆).
    -------------------------------------------------------
In ancient China. Due to the escape or expansion of territorial reasons. There were many records of the Han people moved to the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese islands (including Okinawa). Establishing small countries and regimes on these islands (representing Chinese senior officials rather than emperor).
In addition to the later period of Japan (because of the ocean). The Han regime on the Korean Peninsula has always been the ancient Chinese territory and the scope of direct jurisdiction (but sometimes it is similar to the different phenomenon of political opinions from the central government. It is similar to the situation in Taiwan and Hong Kong today. When the relationship between Taiwan and Hong Kong and the central government is bad. Sometimes they think they are independent countries or claim to be non -Chinese).
The history of the establishment of a regime on the Korean Peninsula (Goguryeo, Baiji, Silla, Goryeo early). It is not the history of the Korean people. Instead, it is the history of the local regime of the Han people in northern China. These royal family and nobles are Chinese and descendants who move to the peninsula. They are wearing Han nationality clothing and using Chinese characters. They also claim to be the Han family.
Only some civilians and slaves are indigenous people from the south of the peninsula (Koreans). This is very certain.
(A large number of ancient Chinese tombs were unearthed on the 2/3 Korean Peninsula today. Han murals (depicting the lives of the Han people in the north), the fairy and god beast of the Han nationality.Han religion. Chinese character stone monument. Han Dynasty coins. ...........
The southernmost part of the peninsula is unearthed in the original and backward Korean national life tools.
It can be seen that the extremes of two different ethnic groups( Chinese VS Korean ) and different civilizations exist at the same time in the same period of the peninsula history.
    *
The Founder of Goguryeo, JUMONG(朱蒙) Is Actually Chinese Pronunciation.
Goguryeo was a northern Han area (and different government opinions, like the relationship between Taiwan and Hong Kong today) in the Tang Dynasty's governance regime. Baekje, SILLA is also the place of power governance in China. These are regional regimes created by the Han people in the north. (Obviously prove this from a lot of historical data and unearthed cultural relics).
The original Korean indigenous people at the southernmost tip of the Korean are slaves. They were convened and became slaves. They were wearing pure white (no dyes and technology) and women showing her nipples as beauty. This is the custom of Korean people.
    *
    Goryeo's founding king-Wang Jian (王建).
Wang Jian (王建) is very obviously the immigrants or descendants of the Han people (whether the culture of clothes is the Han culture), this possibility is quite high.
Because Wang Jian is the descendant of the Chinese (Han), the regime he has established follows the abbreviation of the ancient country Goguryeo, as the new national name Goryeo. The North Korean people at the southern end of the peninsula were called as workers and slaves (wearing pure white clothes and women to show nipples). Later, they became the civilians of Goryeo.
The history of the Korean nation is the history of slave. They have never sovereignty.

Great work! You are making two great things in this video: First, giving the credit to ancient Koreans for the piñatas that EVERYBODY ELSE in history divulgation don't give them, as its seems like (and I believe until reading the right books) Japanese take the piñatas directly from the China.

Ah, its an old thing, language and religions carry a LOT with them. Medicine like buddhism came from india, through china, thus was kept written in chinese. To become a doc, you d have to be able to read it. Then simple logistics. The very first writings in human history all people considered are... clay tablets for counting grain...
So with writing you could better organize hundreds of thousands of people. Something impossible for an illiterate power structure. Religion contains rules for behaving in that society, and dispensing justice etc. The finer points of which you have to look for in the books, but in the end having it in a book helps people feeling there IS a justice, rather than being tied to the whims of a local chief or chaman.
So the side of the litterate not only is a question of religion, but of a whole litterate system to organize a large society under a centralized power structure, which others cannot.

There are no record of Japanese came to Baejae to “actively” learn civilization but there are plenty of record that Baejae people want to introduce those and settled as ruling class in Japan society even today. That means Baejae people are who “actively” teach them and spread new religion and culture like missionaries at that time.

There were plenty of Baekje and Chinese immigrants in Japan at the time, and the Japanese did send plenty of missions to China, and we know they had close communication with Baekje. In fact, the first Buddhist temple in Japan was founded by Baekjae. Kongō Gumi, a Japanese temple building company, was also made by Baekje. Baekjin also designed the Big Buddha statue of Tōdai-ji, and the Shilla people and the descendants of Baekje led the building.

@@Linfamy Japan was ignored by the Tang Dynasty, and at that time For a period of time, Korea (Silla) had more exchanges. Check this out. Katakana is exactly the same as the Silla Buddhist abbreviated handwriting. It was very close to the geographical area and very easy to interact with. The Todai jiis made of the Silla descendants on the main axis. The Great Buddha was designed by Baekje artist. Study on this. And after defeating the war, the Goguryeo, Paekche, and Silla elites crossed the Japanese island.
