My brother and I were running the Bender Customs SW2 chassis and my brother ended up winning one of the first production SW3 sets from the '07 winter nationals in Colorado. Crazy how far we have come.
John - You forgot to mention that this was designed by your old friend Stampede Project who exclusively licensed the design to Fast Lane Machine FLM. As I recall you did really well with the chassis. The design "did break all mold" of anything else that was on the market all while complying with the tuber rules. Glad to see this is still in circulation. I still see these on ebay custom crawler builds...etc. It was what we had to work with. Keep it up.
Agreed! Would love to hear about what someone new to or returning to the game should look at, product wise. The Bully seems like just about the only rtr game in town. I don't need to compete, but I'd love to have a crawler to build and tweak on! Maybe a video on what to look at these days?
Love the videos. I agree with the request on diff between chassis. Also, would you make an explanation video on gearing as if you were explaining it to a child? I know I know. Volt up gear down. Much appreciated.
I know you are a crawler guy but also I know your esc’s are castle based. I’m getting into no prep & it’d be cool to see a video on using the advanced timing option like the C. H. E. A. T. Settings & stuff. Nobody has a good video explaining it & showing how it affects the motor. Not sure if I even keep the function in your esc. But just throwing it out there seeing how the no prep scene is getting big right now.
My RC obsession started when I got a XMODS for Christmas 2003. Although I don't have the chassis anymore I still have the box it came in and assorted parts.
I do hear you talk a lot about 'geometry'. Can you spare the time explaining it a video? I do know the concept of anti-squat. But no idea what values to aim for when building chassis for different (style) rigs. Trail/scale (class0), go-everywhere (scx10, VS4-10, enduro, Capra) or racer (Bomber, Yeti-ish). Would be appriciated. Thnx in advance.
My oldest crawler is my custom built Jeep from 2006. The chassis is designed by me and is no where near correct Im sure but it runs and crawls. It has TLT axles and a Traxxas Stampede transmission. Runs an HPI Jeep body and is color matched to my 98 Jeep TJ. Links, cross members, rollcage, chassis mounted servo mount, and custom interior all done by me. Its not perfect but it has been in several local comps and done ok. But this year it is going into retirement and will just be used for fun and trail runs. Oldest all around RC is my Kyosho Double Dare I picked up this past Feb at a swap meet. My plan is to restore it and use it as a show truck.
Always Very Kool Videos Thank You For The Awsome Info. And Just Got My Crawlmaer Motors In The Mail Today So Exited To Install Them On My Rigs .Thank You 🙏👍🏼🔥🔥🔥👌🏼
I love all the videos with information you provide.its helped me out a lot with my choices for my crawlers and your motors are awesome.so thank you very much for all you do for the hobby.👍
I was completely out of the hobby game by the time axial released the first scx10. A good buddy bought one and after about 3 hours worth of me telling him how stupid rock crawling was I got hooked back into the hobby. Sadly I got fed up with that dingo constantly breaking drive shafts and shock hoops and I sold it. About a year ago my brother won a trx4 bronco and I got hooked again. Tried my luck with a scx10 ii but that was a mistake now I'm rocking a vs410/trx4 hybrid that gets the job done and never breaks down. Thanks Holmes for the awesome motors.
👏🏻More of this. 2006/07 I templated gecko2 geometry into 1/8” aluminum plate for a clod based crawler. Still have it. I wanted a brake line buggy bad then.
Never been into comp crawlers, but I have driven class 1 and 2 scale class. I joined the Scale4x4 forum in 05' and been there ever since. To bad the forum is down atm, but the owner have told me he is working on the issues. My oldest rc vehicle is from 80' ish, and most of my collection is vintage Tamiya ones. But I still own TLT shocks and the grey Stampede gearbox. I even have the boxes from my two TLT's and some of the orginal parts as I used the axles for my scale builds. Also have parts from the 1gen AX10 which came out in 08' I belive. I guess the my oldest "crawler" parts is those from TLT. Still have the silver Courier build with TLT axles from the Scale4x4 forum fresh in my head, and that is what started my scale/crawler interest. I belive that build was posted in 05' when I joined the forum. TLT's came out in late 03' (source Tamiyabase)
I think the oldest thing I have are some old Bit CharG cars and parts from ages back. I wish I took better care of the RC stuff back in the day, but I had fun bashing it all just the same :D
The PTI Goliath was one of the first crawler ever,I do have one which I bought new in box,kit version ,also got the kit to allow you change a set the shocks in different position, it came from a monster truck as many of them back again,I have understand that many rc crawlers were simply the mod from monster trucks back in time
My 1st was a Losi Mini Rock Crawler. Thought the AX10 was too bog (bad move). Still have 2 Mini's: a Pro with a C-10 Chev P/U body & my original Mini converted to a scale crawler with a TCS L-Trail ladder chassis, an RJ Speed Jeep body with SCX10 extended fenders, a Wraith interior, upgraded Axial skid plate & 540 motor. Still using the original narrow Mini axles & haven't blown them up yet, but I treat it gently. Thx for the nostalgia ride 😜
I built one with Scx10ii parts. Yes it sucks, BUT for blasting around the yard it was sorta fun. It would lift one wheel coming out of turns. And when I hit a bump that would launch a crawler into the air. It basically roll over the ramp and never left the ground. It is what I toss junk parts at and just sitting around.
Oldest RC vehicle I have is my RC10 Team Car. I bought it brand new, first kit car I ever put together. Later I added the MIP 4wd conversion kit to it. Its sitting in it's original box here in my office.
I do have parts laying around but I noticed I almost had a full vehicles so I started putting it together. Capra chassis and shocks, AR60 axles, savox servo, puller pro 2200kv, mamba-X ESC,metal SMT10 transmission, MIP driveshaft parts and such.
Man that brought me back. I started crawling with the first gen of hpi wheelyking. Made my own servo on axle mount and aluminum links to extend the wheelbase. All I could find for a motor was the 55t integy “lathe”
I dont really have any old stuff. Only been in the hobby for about 5 years and I get rid of stuff pretty quick. That's really cool that you have those pieces of history though!
I have been into RC Crawling since 2005. I still have an old Clodbuster rig with the Hustler chassis that I take out for fun from time to time. I would love to find a 2.2 Hustler chassis to put some Bully axles under and make a little brother to this one just for kicks.
The oldest stuff I still use are some Clodbuster axles (no longer original, everything has been replaced). Not in use is the original CB chassis. Been building/driving trail trucks for around 4 years and it's my favorite segment because of the scale aspect.
My first rc was from RadioShack and it was a dune buggy red I don't remember the name of it but I was young. But the first one I had to put together was The lunchbox the first run of it in like 1990 or 1991. I loved it. now I have an actual scorpion ax10 that the side plates are the only thing that are original on it. Turned it into a rock racer that's brushless now with a 2 speed transmission. Fast and very fun to run.
Reign Rc was popular out here in the early days. I think I still have a new in package K2-3L designed for the 'Pede' trans and the later K2-5 hanging around somewhere. I should try to find them.
Great video. I’d like to hear more about comp crawlers. I’m a newbie and know a little but would love to hear about it from a veteran. Define comp crawler, I had a guy tell me not long ago “maybe next year you will have a comp crawler” my rig was a nearly stock trx4 but it didn’t look very different with the body’s on. Teach us.
I'm brand new to RC crawling. I bought the SCX10-III builders kit around the 2nd week of January 2021. It took me a couple weeks to get all my electronics, so I've been crawling for about 2 weeks now. As I do with most things, I dived straight into the deep end and have spent more than $1500 on this rig with all the upgrades I've made. The Crawl Space near Denver, CO has indoor crawler comps every Friday. I went to check it out a couple nights ago and I think I can do alright. My dream is to get my own CNC mill and lathe and build my own rig from scratch, but I don't think my wife will ever let me spend that kind of money. She still thinks I've only spent about $500 on my SCX10. What she doesn't know won't hurt her right?
Oldest chassis: original 1st gen, 1st run bolink digger. (Christmas present from mom and dad on my 16th birthday. 1981.) Oh & I have an all original rc10 gold pan. My 1st true 'race' rc vehicle. & An all original kyosho inferno st. Ah the good ole days when weight was never an issue! 😁
Love the video; I was wondering will you make a serious of RC crawler History episodes, I think it will be very interesting, e.g. like what is the first crawler looks like, or who invented the RC crawler? Or how people made a crawler out of Tamiya Clod Buster axle, I am really interested in how the crawler trend have evolved through the years! Because I try to search these kind of video on the net, but seems not many people did this kind of documentary.😆
Thank you John! Love the history. I have 35 yr collection of RC FE boat stuff, living 100 yards from a small lake, here in SoCal. My favorite old parts are a collection of ESC designed and marketed by Andy Kunz (RC-Hydros.com "The Choice of the Pros")....before he was drafted to the big leagues(Horizon Hobby). Still providing weekly service......and some new spare esc still in their hang-bags..... beefy 60A watercooled esc....good "old" tech😁 And the link Still WORKS.....😎
I have an original SCX10, or at least an original SCX10 chassis that refuses to die, so I keep driving it and occasionally have to shove a new HH motor into it. It still has the original V1 BRXL esc and all of the chassis hop ups that I installed when I first built it. It now has 10.2 axles and has had 3 sets of transmission gears and ohhhhhh...... however many bearings there are times 5. I bet you the chassis has close to 25k miles if not more and I stopped counting how many motors I've been through.
My oldest RC is my original tamiya grasshopper it's no longer original but I still have all the original parts I have swapped ,I have been saving up for the bully 2 moa I would put your crawl master pro motors in it as I have a few of these and love them they are so good ,we don't have any competitions for moa where I am or any where close but I would still use it to improve my crawling skills for all my crawlers
I got in very late to the Comp Crawler scene. I bought a Borg, thinking I would go compete... But the Comp scene was already dying down in Tucson... I barely even got to learn how to use it well. So that was my short history of "Beetle Crawling" 😖 Carmine
Thats neat , i just got a hpi savage and going to convert to electronic i trust your opionion on motors very much watch a lot of your videos what would you recommend for high tqurk. Motor and esc its all aluminum thank you friend
I have an old wreckluse chassis also , I keep saying I'm going to get it back together but I just can't get it to sit the way I want it to so it just sits on the shelf
Oldest crawler is my XR-10, I'd love to get it back on the rocks, but cant find any factory axial 45mm chassis braces, other than that, maybe my AX-10, or SCX10-1 power wagon
Hey man. I will be dumping and STL of the original StampedeProject SPV2 chassis for the 3D printing guys since Integy never honored the Cease & decist from Stampede Project and FLM
I've been into RC crawling since 2011, rc's in general since the late 80s. The oldest hobby grade RC car I have is my 1989 RC10 gold Pan. Oldest crawler is a first gen 2011 SCX10. It is still alive and kicking. th-cam.com/video/pcseFzEQz7g/w-d-xo.html. The only things that've been replaced are bearings once, and front axle housing because the first one wore all the way through the plastic to the gears.
I have a titanium chassis for my many Losi XXXNT that I will probably never use because its heavier than the milled hard anodized chassis's that I like to run.
My oldest RC....Well, it's not even hobby grade, and def hasn't seen use since the mid 90's - that would be my Tyco mini Bandit. Oldest hobby grade RC, again hasn't seen any use for 6 (maybe 7) years would be my T-Maxx 3.3 from around 2008. I simply grew tired of rebuilding the motor in it, and yep the motor needs a fresh rebuild... Got several other oldies, but if talking crawlers specifically, then my SCX10 II Honcho is the oldest (only been into RC Crawling for 2 years). I try not to collect too many parts I don't use - sure I keep some spare parts on hand I know I'll eventually use, but I do try not to have old parts around that will never get used. I did have some stuff (an old but hot touring car motor, ESC, and a fast (though extremely weak on torque) servo) that was kicking aroud in a box that was taken out of use, but I did recently put them into service once again in the most ridiculous street/parking lot basher I ever took on.
Do you know about Traxxas’s power up? You send in your old junk motor and for 1/2 price they’ll send you a brand new one, hobby shop can do it too. Worth it if your wanting to scratch that nitro itch
@@mikes062 I know about it, but I don't know if it's on offer in Canada (prob is). Either way, I'm not overly worried as I know it only needs a new sleeve and piston (much cheaper then even half price of a new motor). But I'm tired of doing that, and tired of the weak bulk heads. If I was to do anything then I'd rather get a new X-Maxx or the Kraton (neither are an option at this time - got much bigger worries). On top of which, these days I prefer trail driving (which makes my last project even more of an oddity).
Reggie Reginato that’s cool, thought I’d let you know in case. My brother has been into the hobby a bit longer than me and told me from the start not to get into nitro because I’d j probably just get annoyed by it, which I did, I don’t know enough about working on and keeping that stuff going. I’ve had a couple and while they were cool for a little bit I just got rid of them. I like to just throw a battery in and go. Just check with your local hobby shop if you decide to look into it, a complete 3.3 is like $110 last I knew, I’m not sure about Canada though, I’d assume you could though. I’ve got aluminum bulk heads in my emaxx so it’s not a problem for me. The x Maxx is pretty awesome though!
That's cool. Normal maintenance like tuning, doing the after run oiling, etc. I didn't find to be a problem. If I was still into bashing, I probably would have changed over to an OS .21 like my friend did with his Revo 3.3 (the time between cylinder pinching/resleeving and pistons went down significantly for him). :-)
I’ve got an old axial AX10 Scorpion with the proline tuber cage, been thinking about modding that cage and putting it on a bandit chassis to make a dune buggy
My brother and I were running the Bender Customs SW2 chassis and my brother ended up winning one of the first production SW3 sets from the '07 winter nationals in Colorado. Crazy how far we have come.
I like hearing about parts of our Hobby that I didn't know about. Cool video.
Thank you for another great video.
Love the history, sir holmes 👌
John - You forgot to mention that this was designed by your old friend Stampede Project who exclusively licensed the design to Fast Lane Machine FLM. As I recall you did really well with the chassis. Let’s see some more of the Comp crawlers. 😀
Agreed! Would love to hear about what someone new to or returning to the game should look at, product wise. The Bully seems like just about the only rtr game in town. I don't need to compete, but I'd love to have a crawler to build and tweak on! Maybe a video on what to look at these days?

The good ol Wreckluse...had that along with the Hustler!!!
Nice vid. I still have my tamiya TLT based crawler from the days before axial started making crawlers😁
Wish we could see you drive that nice little pro someday
Thanks, always enjoy your content
This makes me so stoked to see! I Still have my old TLT axled Reign J2-TT Comp rig, and a spare SW2 chassis that I'll also probably never build
Thanks for the video! Got a set of old clod busters laying around with some gigantic 40 series double beadlocks. It was the cat’s meow back in 07’!
Only been in it for about a year and can't get enough for it 😁
I've been into RC crawling for about 10 years, but I've been involved in RC for over 30 years.
Been running crawlers for 11 years. Still have and run my first SCX10 with a BR-XL and Torque Master 35t.
Any chance you could run your 2.2 MOA on your back garden course? Would be interested to see how it gets on compared to your other reviews 👍
My oldest crawler is my custom built Jeep from 2006. The chassis is designed by me and is no where near correct Im sure but it runs and crawls. It has TLT axles and a Traxxas Stampede transmission. Oldest all around RC is my Kyosho Double Dare I picked up this past Feb at a swap meet. My plan is to restore it and use it as a show truck.
Storytime! Good stuff!
Always Very Kool Videos Thank You For The Awsome Info. And Just Got My Crawlmaer Motors In The Mail Today So Exited To Install Them On My Rigs .Thank You 🙏👍🏼🔥🔥🔥👌🏼
I am so old, I used to build hpi, wheely king comp. crawlers! 😁👍
I love all the videos with information you provide.its helped me out a lot with my choices for my crawlers and your motors are awesome.so thank you very much for all you do for the hobby.👍
Amazing rc vehicle videos

Good history lesson
Love your motors 🚀🚀🚀
More Redcat Gen 8 please, I'm waiting for mine to arrive 👌
Interesting,, COOL cool cool, Stuff 👍💯
Aaah..down memory lane ..my oldest is a tamiya from back in the 80s
Axial AX-10 ARTR, complete with Novak 55t script motor and Rooster ESC. Still going strong 💪
👏🏻More of this. 2006/07 I templated gecko2 geometry into 1/8” aluminum plate for a clod based crawler. Still have it. I wanted a brake line buggy bad then.

Well, out in the garage covered in dust is an early '70s Dynamic Indy Car from before anybody heard of an ESC .... or suspension.
I built one with Scx10ii parts.

I do have parts laying around but I noticed I almost had a full vehicles so I started putting it together.

Shoot please send this to me lol my son he 4 would love it!
Hey John would love to see a tutorial on comp shock set ups I know u know so let us know u know 😉

.... My oldest Rig is a Tamiya Frog - almost FOUR Decades old!!
my oldest rc part was ffrom 2005... diy links hehehe
sold all of my diy crawlers... txt-1, several clodbuster rigs
Cox. 049 dune buggy. That puts me in the early 70s era.
Only a couple of months for me!
My only RC Crawler is a cheap and cheerful FTX Mauler :-)
I would love to get more info on these comp style crawlers. I am interested in building one but I really have no idea where to start.
I’ve still got my losi comp crawler. Serial number down in the low 200’s.
Thats neat , i just got a hpi savage and going to convert to electronic i trust your opionion on motors very much watch a lot of your videos what would you recommend for high tqurk. Motor and esc its all aluminum thank you friend
do more videos on LCG belly dragger crawler and maybe a build series
Can you do a video on types of brushes and how they react differently
John what rig is on the top shelf to the left you your head ? Silver chassis black panels
don't know about the meaning of life but, where do baby RC's come from John?? lol
When a boy rc loves a girl rc...
Still have my AX10 scorpion
I have an old wreckluse chassis also , I keep saying I'm going to get it back together but I just can't get it to sit the way I want it to so it just sits on the shelf
Oldest crawler is my XR-10, I'd love to get it back on the rocks, but cant find any factory axial 45mm chassis braces, other than that, maybe my AX-10, or SCX10-1 power wagon
I have a old xr10 sitting on the shelf
Since we built crawlers out of TLT axles
Dud you ever drive that MOA rig John?
Can you do a video about installing links and trying to get the right wheelbase we want?I can’t find many videos about it online
Try rccrawler.com forum. Lots of good info but you have to dig and read a bit.
I'm still running SCX10 1 axles and I can't bring myself to change
So the rc channels are blowing up with the cen racing f450. To me it looks like its geared more toward crawling. Thinking you may take a look at it?
I ran a moon buggy v2. Oldest is a set of bully v1 axlis.
Hey man. I will be dumping and STL of the original StampedeProject SPV2 chassis for the 3D printing guys since Integy never honored the Cease & decist from Stampede Project and FLM
Ooohhhhh?
My Tamiya frog follow by my first gen stampede
I've been into RC crawling since 2011, rc's in general since the late 80s. The oldest hobby grade RC car I have is my 1989 RC10 gold Pan. Oldest crawler is a first gen 2011 SCX10. It is still alive and kicking. th-cam.com/video/pcseFzEQz7g/w-d-xo.html.
The only things that've been replaced are bearings once, and front axle housing because the first one wore all the way through the plastic to the gears.
Where do babies come from? Just kidding, Great history lesson. :)
My oldest one is a tempest gladiator
Anything on comp crawlers, shafties, PLEASE! So much misinformation out here and downright snobbery from the old guys! Especially the geometry.
My oldest is my losi next I think
I have a titanium chassis for my many Losi XXXNT that I will probably never use because its heavier than the milled hard anodized chassis's that I like to run.
Lol I modded a set of ax10 rails recently and had to drill new holes
35 years
Nuce.. can u make the custome chassis for 1:12 scale?i wanna order
Can you make a longer screwdriver...
🤙🤙🤙🤙
@@mikes062 Had a look a second time just because it's good to know, and yep it's not available to us Canuk's ('Merican's only).
cewl beans
I’ve got an old axial AX10 Scorpion with the proline tuber cage, been thinking about modding that cage and putting it on a bandit chassis to make a dune buggy
