  • In this review we are comparing the Nikon Z 105mm f/2.8 S MC VR lens versus the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens. I get these questions asked all the time
Can I buy the Nikon Z 105mm f2.8 S VR MC lens for amazing macro work & at the same time use it as a good enough portrait lens?
    and
Which lens is better at 105mm for portraits.
    the Z 105 MC vs Z 70-200mm VR S both at 105mm.
Well in this video let's find that out shall we.
I will be using be using the Nikon Z9 for the sample images in this review capturing the images in full quality raw.
I want to thank my wonderful Niece Sofia for helping me out in the Portrait section of this video and thank you ‪@nikonusa‬ for suppling the Z 70-200mm S lens. The Z9 and 105mm MC are my personal lenses I own.

I own both of the 105mc 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8, but my favourite new "S" line lens for portraits is the 85mm 1.8...it's very sharp, smooth bokeh and the lens is super lite.

Your niece is the MVP for posing. She brings a lot to your content. It is hard to really understand differences without a subject. I wish you'd done a 3 way shootout with the 85mm 1.8 S.

Nice side by side comparison. Since I don't shoot macro I'm all in for the 70-200mm S. I know there is a huge difference in price but I see so much flexibility in the 70-200 for my work. Thanks V.

Cool comparison, I think the 105mm is slightly sharper and I mean slightly at all Apertures. I feel the Bokeh on the 70-200 mm is slightly more pleasing to the eye but ever so slightly. In the end no one should hold back on using the 105 MC for portraits in my opinion and in the same way no reason not to use the 70-200 for the same but I feel you don't necessarily buy either of these specifically for portraits only, I think the 70-200 is more versatile overall due to the Zoom range but it's no Macro either. Since the 70-200 is great for portraits at a distance, some sports and birding I would buy them both, if you don't need a Macro lens I would buy the 70-200 only.

Good review. I have the 105 but never thought it renders such beautiful portraits . Thumps up .

Macro lens for portraits? Well, this was an insider secret of professional photographers in the past. Classical lens designs have their elements in a fixed arrangement. These lenses had their design were optimized for "infinity". Shooting at closer by distances would move away from that optimum. And so at between 1.2m (4") and 1.8m (6'), a macro lens like a 105mm would actually do better. Especially in a studio with a rather neutral background, these lenses were used a lot in portrait photography. Especially when zoom lenses still had to see a lot of optical improvement.

An excellent video and thank you so much for making it 👍

Awesome job on comparing both lenses. Thanks for the hard work. Yes, I totally agree that the bokeh is smoother on the 70-200.

I got to agree with you that the 70-200 has the edge when it comes to bokeh. But I'm noticing that the 105 has a slight edge when it comes to sharpness and contrast.

Nice comparison between the Nikon 105 and the 70-200mm f2.8 Z lens. Both are great lens, the 70-200 seem cooler color temperature and great for capturing good skin tone, the bokeh is really good and overall a bit softer image but great overall lens. The 105 is warmer and captures really good reflective objects like the plate on the door, reflections from the 35mm lens and the gold vase shows really good light from the fibres of the vase, also the warmth and sharpness of the 105 truly make it a great macro lens. You got great cameras and lenses and your photos are great. Rock'n'Roll.

As an owner of the 105, I like the sharpness of the lens, yet my favorite macro was the Sigma 150. Alas its AF is defective and thus it is pretty hard to do focus stacks.

I can vouch for the quality of the Z 105mm f/2.8 S MC VR as I have one. I thought of using it for portraits and it's good to validate this option from the samples you provided, it stacks up very well indeed. That said, I do agree that the 70-200 renders a nicer looking bokeh when compared to the 105 at the same distance and you get extra compression with a nicer bokeh if you frame your subject at the 200mm focal length too; however, the 105 is no slouch and I'd say getting one or the other depends on your primary purpose. I found the 70-200 to be slightly warmer and the consistency of the 2.8 from it vs the shifting aperture value of the 105 depending on how close you are to the subject is another consideration.

I’m a wedding/portrait photographer. I’ve rented the 70-200 and I can attest it is a fabulous lens. I recently purchased the Z 105mm macro and I find it really great for wedding details and portraits. Wedding shots usually don’t have a Bride running so I’m not impacted by the “slow focusing” of my Z 105. I have other primes I can use if the bride or groom decides to make a run for it. Fortunately for me I make sure the customer pays 80% before the wedding in case they run off. Both lenses are great, smaller & lighter for an all day shoot makes me glad I have this sharp & versatile lens.

Both lenses are awesome in my opinion. The main difference I'm seeing is that th 70-200 is a tad brighter, which shows on the skintone. The background blur is VERY similar. These days when I try not to get "lost in the weeds".... will the client notice the difference is the question. The answer is no. I don't own the 70-200 z, but I do own the 105 mc and having done a few weddings and portrait sessions with it, I can tell you, It doubles as a BEAUTIFUL portrait lens with a clear advantage for beauty shots. 😉 My DSLR 70-200 with the adapter on the Z7ii is always available if I need the flexibility and works GREAT.

Vahagan, Thanks for the video and demonstrating the full potential of the new S MC 105mm f/2.8 as I am considering buying this lens to replace my old AF Micro NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8D.
