  • Nikon has released their first native micro lenses for macro photography for the Z series! Join host Seth Miranda @LastXwitness as he tries out the new 105 f2.8 VR S and MC 50mm f2.8 macro on location in NYC for some up-close portraits.
    ✘ NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S Lens:
    www.adorama.com/nkz10528.html
    Key Features:
    ► Has 4.52 stops of vibration reduction
    ► Includes NANO Crystal and ARNEO Coatings to limit flare and ghosting effects, even with backlighting
    ► Combines controls that include a manual focus ring, lens function shortcut button, control ring, and lens info panel with weather sealing
    ► Compatible with the in-body stabilization feature in the full-frame Z series mirrorless cameras, providing 5-axis VR
    ► Multi-Focus STM system is an autofocus algorithm, which accounts for minute distance changes that alter the effective aperture
    ► Includes a limiter switch to reduce the working range to a maximum of 1.6 feet (0.5m)
    ► Near-silent AF performance
    ► Larger rear aspherical lens element to reduce field curvature from infinity to close-up
    ► Short minimum focusing distance of 0.96 feet (0.29m)
    ► 1:1 reproduction ratio
    ✘ NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 Lens:

    It’s good that they are starting to make more specialized lenses. They got their middle-of-the-road (but in a very good way) f/4 zooms and 1.8 primes, they got pro f/2.8 zooms and have begun introducing f/1.2s, they got a cheaper variable-aperture option and cheaper primes coming as well, and now they covered macro. Only thing left is more tele options I think. Oh and of course fisheyes, tilt-shifts, etc.

      That’s a tough call the 1.8 is extremely sharp and I was surprised how close you can’t get with it maybe around 15” from subject but this new macro being so small and sharp as well along with the true macro functionality it maybe a more versatile lens especially since it can work with the slide/negative copy thing nikon makes

    • @LastXwitness
      @LastXwitness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will variate in the f stop when set to wide open this is actually nikon showing you not so much the f stop but the actual light transmission since the elements are moved so far for the macro it will inhibit the light entering the lens. If you notice on other brand lenses like this when they don’t variate the actual fstop number but you still lose the light so the camera either underexposes or compensates raising the iso or slowing the shutter depending on your mode. It’s still insanely shallow depth of field you just can’t get the same light transmission Ricci does a good job explaining it in his video here m.th-cam.com/video/7RJh7VZrjA4/w-d-xo.html

      I'd opt for the 105mm Macro in your scenario. I was lucky and just bought a Z6 recently with a 14-30mm f/4 lens, so the 50mm Macro made sense for me. No sense in buying another 50mm when you already have Nikon's tack sharp 50mm prime f/1/8. Go for the 105mm Macro! Might be better for nature so you can keep your distance from bugs or insects that might sting you too.

      Like you said, that Canon price though. I feel like Canon has really been knocking it out of the park with their RF lenses, but the prices are sky high. I simply can't afford the new unique Canon glass. The Nikon releases are much more budget friendly for the amateur photographer while still maintain a high level of quality. I am not sure why would anyone switch to the Z mount? The Z mount lenses are equivalent to the F mount lenses, the large aperture Z lens is out of reach price wise for most people, only Nikon AF-S lenses are supported by the Z mount.

    • @Tr4llf4zz
      @Tr4llf4zz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      From what I've seen thus far the Z-mount lenses outperform their F-mount counterparts all across the board from an IQ standpoint, so that in my opinion is reason alone to make the switch. However, if a person is only concerned with just the specs (i.e., focal length, aperture, etc.) and don't take into consideration how the lenses actually perform, then I think they'd be best served keeping what they already have or abandoning the hobby altogether as their priorities are obtuse (again my opinion).

    A slap in the face to Nikon users as the Nikon Z Teleconverter 1.4x /2.0 is not compatible with the 105mm MC VR S Lens. The legacy F mount lens worked perfectly with the f mount teleconverters. I am one disappointment away from switching to Sony.

    when you pick up a macro lens for portraits but the skin color tones make your eyes bleed. yes, its sharp, but ultimately a less sharp lens with better skin rendering will spit out better portraits. people love sharpness because its easy to understand even for beginners. colors, contrast, composition is what sparks emotion but its actually quite complex. sharpness is not the high end metric for pictures but emotion is - may it be interest, soothing feeling or whatever.

      Or some people like to shoot sharp portraits 🤷‍♂️ it’s all subjective you’re welcome to your way of shooting and everyone else can have theirs. You can throw whatever ego and intellect you want at what you’re doing but this is jsut showing more tools we all have to choose from to create the shots we ourselves want to produce 👍 it’s also easy to like soft focus images for skin texture hence all these blur filters …to each their own

      @@LastXwitness i dont like how the industry is pushed towards sharpness as primary lens parameter and people judge lens performance by looking at a chart instead of actual pictures because sharpness is so overvalued.
      The tokina opera 50 1.4 or the Nikon 200 2 deliver outstanding skin color rendition while being extremely high resolution wide open. this is knownledge devoid of media coverage.
      other really good lenses for delicate skin tones are the Nikon DC lenses and the 85 1.4d. the 85 1.4g is not as good because it suffers from extreme CAs introducing magenta green color shifts.

      I see no issues with the skincolor in the pictures, they look perfectly fine on my (calibrated) monitors.

      You seem to think that because a lens is sharper it will necessarily be less good in color ... it has nothing to do and one does not prevent the other

    using macro lenses for portraiture is like using a flame thrower to make burgers. the rendering is sterile, and too sharp.
