My Father attended this game when he was a 16 year old schoolboy.Dad said there were more fights in the crowd than on the field. Many of the crowd were young soldiers who had just seen action in WW2 still fired up,and a fist-fight was mild to what they had seen, and some of the brawls went on for 10 minutes.

Very clear impressions and memories from the lady interviewed. Would have been a pretty raw game in the wake of WW2.

@J G You should embrace your culture and stop fretting J G. It will be fine in the long term.

@@geoffreywright95 J G is a serial troll. This same message appears on dozens of AFL-related videos.

Would love to see the footage of the game. But even though there was television overseas, Australia was behind the times then and tv didn't come to Australia until 1956 (because the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne)

How could Hands have come back later on ? Interchange wasn't brought in until 1978. Once you were taken off that was the end of your day.

Yep, when he went off he was finished.

A player could leave the field during the game to have injuries attended to and then return back to the field and continue playing, it just ment the team was playing one player short during that time he was off the ground.
But once a player whether injured or not was replaced on the ground by the 19th/20th man then that replaced player could not return to the field and was unable to play for the rest of the game.

"They fought from start to finish".....funny how there's never any footage. I'm a Swans fan and I have never seen any film of the 'Bloodbath'.....not saying it didn't happen of course, but does any footage indeed exist?

It has been said that many WW 11...diggers had recently been released from the army ...following the internments I Singapore/Japan
....and the players were aware of their presence...and thus played up to them...in particular...Bob Chitty( Carlton.)...whose brother had been in Changi!
