Dr Ishtiaq you nailed it. I watched Ayesha Jalal, before watching your interview. Your ideas are more convincing and logical based on historical facts and authentic sources (literature). I am astonished Ayesha Jalal instead of answering the question says " Ishtiaq Ahmad is a political scientist", well, if you "Ayesha Jalal" are a historian, then give us some logical evidence in order to prove your arguments.

Jalal's history writing is mostly essays written in a way where opinions are stated as facts. Evidence is often a recycling of opinions.. She is not alone in this. It happens a lot with many historians of South Asia. Many of them are "eminent".

Pakistan never really was a multi cultural state when you've 98% people following one religion. Of course you have regional differences and distinct culture of that region, but the fundamental premise of Pakistan was that religion is the overiding factor over culture and hence Pakistan wasn't really multi cultural

The present muslims of Bharat are creating so many problems for Bharat. They are still in mind that they were rulers of Bharat. . What a tragedy that a Pakistani muslim is revealing the honest truth. Our own Advani and Jaswant Singh belonging to BJP went out of their way to blame partition on Nehru and these two stalwarts of BJP even went on to declare that Jinnah was a great man who was vilified by Congress. Fortunately, Modi understood deviousness of these two gentlemen and properly sidelined them. Jaswant Singh eventually proved himself a snake by turning against BJP.

M A Jinnah used religion to the highest extent to fulfill his political ambitions. He never practiced Islam. But his Pakistan didn't last for more than 24 years. Jinnah's two nation theory went into Bay of Bengal in 1971 when East Pakistan (till 1956 it was known as East Bengal) was born as Bangladesh.
My sincere thanks to Prof Ishtiaq Ahmed for his valuable discussion on history of the partition of India.

  • @a.k.830

28:52 Jinnah had accepted Cabinet Mission Plan in principle but not entirely. In fact, Congress had also accepted the Cabinet Mission Plan with some reservations (like they were opposed to the condition of grouping of Muslim-majority provinces and right of Muslim provinces to secede from the Union). As per Cabinet Mission Plan, central government was to be weak and provinces were to enjoy more power. Jinnah preferred weak central government with no right to collect its own taxes with only Defence and Foreign Affairs falling under its jurisdiction and it being completely dependent on grants from provinces for funds because a weak centre meant easy secession of Muslim group of provinces. Congress wanted a strong central government that we now have in India where Centre is more powerful than provinces/states to curb secessionist forces.
Jinnah accepted Cabinet Mission Plan because he wanted the group of Muslim-majority provinces to secede away later. That ways he might have gotten whole of Punjab and Bengal (both provinces had only a slim Muslim majority. Congress’s counter-blackmail to Jinnah’s demand of partition was partitioning of Punjab and Bengal and retaining Muslim-minority parts of Punjab and Bengal with India whereas Jinnah wanted to have whole of Punjab and whole of Bengal in Pakistan. His plan was centred around maximising territory for Pakistan. Had he been successful then Pakistan would have encircled India’s capital territory (Delhi) on 3 sides! Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Sonepat would have been a part of West Pakistan as today’s Haryana was a part of Punjab Province in 1940s and Kolkata would have been a part of East Pakistan. Jinnah was so focussed on maximising territory for Pakistan that he offered the princely states of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer to join Pakistan at any terms (these two states were almost half of present day Rajasthan). Jinnah was very disenchanted with the Pakistan he got. He famously described it as “moth-eaten Pakistan”. Congress accepted Partition because Muslim League, even though it was a part of a national government (formed in July 1946) in partnership with Congress, was stoking the fire of communal riots all across India. When this fire of communal riots reached Punjab, the riots were extraordinarily bloody as Punjab had more than half a million of ex-soldiers demobilised after World War II. Many of these demobilised soldiers possessed firearms (guns, pistols, revolvers etc.) as well. Whether they possessed firearms or not, they surely were trained in the art of attacking in a systematic manner. That’s why the riots in Punjab were extraordinarily bloody and the casualty rate was very high (not to say riots were like ordinary riots in the other parts of undivided India, the riots were unprecedentedly bloody in Bengal, Bihar as well but in Punjab they were extraordinarily bloody so much so that those appeared like a Civil War). Sardar Patel felt that India was staring at a civil war. Because of high representation of Muslims in British Indian Army and police and presence of warring Pashtun tribes in NWFP whose support could have gone to Muslim side only, a civil war could have gone on for long which a war ravaged Indian economy could not afford. He understood that most of Muslims in undivided India supported Muslim League and Muslim League was unlikely to drop its demand for a separate homeland for Muslims anytime soon. Moreover, The Great Game and Cold War had also begun. Western powers were aligning to stop Communist Soviet bloc and Soviet bloc was looking at extending its influence to Indian subcontinent. So an India engaged in Civil War might have been a fertile ground for foreign intervention especially by P5 countries. Sardar Patel was proven right and we saw USA fighting USSR & China in Korean War of early 1950s, just 4 years after Indian independence.
Nehru & Gandhi, lost in their idealism, were not able to see through Jinnah’s nefarious plans. Had Sardar Patel not acted prudently on many occasions, territory of Republic of India would have been much smaller. Pakistan’s territory would have started just outside Delhi and Kolkata would have been capital of East Pakistan. We would have lost half of Rajasthan and half of Saurashtra (in the form of princely state of Junagadh) as well.

24:45 That’s why Muslim forces of state of Hyderabad (numbered around 42,000 soldiers) along with 200,000 Razakars of MiM (today Owaisi family heads that party) crumbled before one corps of Indian Army (one corps=30,000 soldiers) in September 1948 (Refer to Operation Polo).
Anyway, this misconception still exists among Muslims of Pakistan and India. One Muslim (in both India and Pakistan) deems himself equal to ten Hindus.

Jinnah was probably right in demanding a homeland for Indian Muslims. Nehru was probably wrong in not requiring Muslims who wished for homeland go and settle in Pakistan. Nehru-Liaqat Ali agreement was not in the interest of India. Nehru was generous but Pakistan didn't reciprocate in kind. Indira was generous with Pakistan in 1972 and Pakistan didn't reciprocate. Now Pakistan is praising them being secular. If secularism is good why doesn't Pakistan adopt it, and doesn't want even people who claim themselves Muslims.

Jinnah destroyed Muslims of the Indian continent by dividing the community into three country .: India , Pakistan and Bangladesh . Had partition not occurred , population of Muslims in the undivided India would have been 60 crores out of 160 crores . Such a strong concentration of Muslims in India would have been a strong , progressive forces . Secondly , an undivided India would have the chance to re establish itself as number one super power of the world . India has been numero uno for two thousand years . India could have achieved again number one position . Partition permanently dented its position of number one . Similarly , Muslims of Indian sub continent have little voice in international affairs . So, Jinnah committed the biggest damage to India and Muslim community .

21:05 to 21:45 , Despite such statements from Jinnah about Muslims in those provinces where they were in minority...most of such Muslims voted for Muslim League voted for Muslim League in 1945 General Election to Central Assembly (this Central Assembly later became Constituent Assembly which drafted our constitution and later Parliament of India) and 1946 elections to provincial assemblies. Despite such statements, Muslim League won 100% of all seats reserved for Muslims in Central Assembly in 1945 election and 87% of seats reserved for Muslims in all Provincial Assemblies in 1946 election. What does this mean? It means that Muslims in Muslim-minority provinces like U.P., Bihar, Madras, Bombay etc. were more loyal to the idea of Pakistan rather than Muslims of Muslim-majority provinces like Sindh, Punjab etc. It should not be forgotten ever that the b@stard Jinnah was elected from Bombay, not Karachi or Lahore. It was Muslims of Bombay city who elected Jinnah. No wonder that majority of Muslims of India celebrate victory of Pakistan over India in cricket.

In the light of the consistent and comprehensive arguments of Ishtiyaq Saheb, it’s amply clear that Jinnah was solely responsible for the partition. Ayesha Jalal simply beat about the bush when she said that Congress was responsible for partition.

    JINNAH'S PARTING MESSAGE ; April 25, 1935 ,
HINDU GOVT. OR INDIAN GOVT .? "Muslims", he said ," were in a very difficult position. The policy of Hindu Mahasabha was dominated by considerations of complete Hindu supremacy in the future. The Muslims could not be expected to work hand in hand with them . Even in the Congress, there was a section which was dissatisfied with Muslim patriotism, although in all important divisions in Assembly the Muslims had supported popular opinion . Let us hope Congress leaders with their greater experience and political training can overcome that section and assure us in future that it would not be a Hindu Government but an Indian Government in which the Muslims would have their equal rights" .
After the 1937 elections under the Govt of India Act 1935 where ever Congress won they did not invite the ML to join the Govt. and Nehru also issued a public statement that they will pass all laws with a simple majority and not a two-third majority . Mr Jinnah being a highly reputed Barrister and intelligent political leader knew the meaning and effect of such a statement on minority Muslims!
Well-meaning Mr Jinnah also offered all the rights to the Sikhs also but their leader was a Hindu Nank Chand Malhotra urf Tara Singh , who was planted and promoted by the founder of Hindu Mahasabha Pandit MM Malviya , refused the offers ! He went to the extent of hacking down the Muslim League flag on March 3,1947 at Lahore with his KIRPAN and shouted PAKISTAN MURDABAD with support of Hindu Mahasabha, Congress, and Akali leaders and MLAs !
That rascal went to the extent of planning to KILL JINNAH and innocent Muslims . Read the TOP SECRET report of Lord Mountbatten of August 9,1947 given on page 172 of book MOUNTBATTEN AND THE PARTITION OF INDIA ! I have posted it on TH-cam also , any one can read it !

How absurd! Pàkístàn has a history of just 70 years, prior history totally denied and eradicated. On top of that thos country lies about the history of it's creation just 70 years back! How is this even acceptable on a national scale? How are they hoping to survive without a grasp on their origins?

I don't know how, there should be deliberate and special efforts to make his new book easily available in India, Pakistan & Bangladesh at affordable prices. People of the subcontinent have a right to know their true history. Besides low Kindle Version price, some philanthropists/organizations can think of gifting the book liberally to libraries in educational institutions.

No doubt Jinnah was an Embassador of Hindu Muslim unity and didn’t want division if the India to begin with.
      Why his thinking changed ?
Why the demand for the separate homeland evolved.?
What circumstances and attitudes of the congress leadership forced to change his ideas ?
What about book Jaswant Singh about Jinnah?
