For me, the decision to purchase one was based on the fact that ROMS could be loaded. I went for the "non gold" version as having wired controllers is more authentic. Sadly here in Australia, there is no pack that includes paddles, which sucks. Clearly what AtGames have done this time is quite cunning and cutting it close. They can't "release a version with all games" if stuff is still under copyright, or the license has no owner to "release it". So they've made a smart move selling it with the "update" instructions to unlock SD card use. Very clever imho.
@@jonathonearl482 Thanks for the heads up. Padel games is a shame but no deal breaker. I dont have the original console. it came out when I was born. But as i grew up it was probably the first console / computer I saw at "rich friends house". My nostalgia itch is scratched more by things like ZX Spectrums and Commodore Amiga 500's. My interest in the Flashback is simply because we didn't have the original, and I probably only played on 1 about twice. It's a nod to gaming genesis imho.
This video is amazing! You asked an expert for help, you showed game footage, put all the links in the description... more people need to watch this channel!!! Great video and keep up the good work!
I’ll agree with you, this one turned out good! And now I have a dungload of Atari ROMs so I can collect at my own pace and just shelve the physicals. Life is good 😎
Thank you very much! I’m glad you’re digging it. It is a cool machine. Stay tuned for more Atari stuff in the Tuesday livestreams and in my vintage computing vids!
After the update delete the firmware file from the SD card and the yes and no selection will no longer appear when system is turned on. You can still access games on sd card.
That’s good intel! I will do that. I appreciate the heads up. Input like that from the community is the part of this I look forward to the most. I hope u subscribe and stick around.
Wanted to say a big THANK YOU for this excellent video! Followed the links and your instructions to a tee and it worked like a charm on the first try. Bought and received this Atari FBG 9 last week from a seller on Amazon. Today, went to Dollar General and purchased a 32Gb PNY SD card for $15 (this was the only size they had). Did not even format the card. Used the already factory format, straight out of the package and it worked fine. Wanted to let people know this as I had seen many references to not using anything greater than 16Gb and to preferably use an 8Gb or 4Gb or smaller. Approximately 10 minutes to extract the atari_update.img file to the SD card, create the Game folder with ROMs and to do a batch rename using the Advanced Renamer utility. Upgrade process completed in less than 30 seconds once I powered on the console with the SD card inserted. I spend more time struggling to get the P1 controller to work (P2 always works immediately but have to power on/off the console and P1 controller 2-3x before it works) than it took to prepare the SD card and perform the update process. However, this issue has nothing to do with the update process nor your well-done video. Just wanted to give the audience some perspective on how quick this was to perform. Thank you again, much appreciated!
That’s good intel! Yeah, the SD card size was referenced in the manual I believe. But I don’t think they’ve ever known for sure the capabilities and limitations of this thing. We’re learning as we go. Thanks for writing in and for watching this!
Also EmceeMurr for the people having trouble seeing the Roms on their console , what worked for me was making sure the GAME file folder is in all caps . When you originally unzip the file it’s in lowercase letters
That’s killer news, Victor! It is a heckuva playlist. I love the brews like Halo 2600 on there. It’s a dream come true to have all that available and it allows me to just collect physical copies at my own pace. I appreciate you checking this out and I hope you’ll subscribe to the channel! Lots more Atari stuff to come.
Straight out of the box. No firmware update. Formated an SD card to fat32, created a folder called "game". Loaded ROMs that were already renamed into that folder and it works fine.
Now that’s interesting! That suggests that the SD option appears simply because the card is in it, not because of the update. I’m wondering if the latest Legends Flashback console even needs an update now. Thanks for the intel and I hope you’ll subscribe and stick around dude!
Awesome! I'm stuck between hacking all of these mini consoles or just making an emulation station with all feasible generations on it. Atari was before my time but I'd love to dig into the library someday!
Emulation Station for sure is convenient and cost effective. As long as you get a usb controller you can be comfortable with. I have one. They botched the build on it though. I need a new micro sd with more complete libraries.
@@Emceemur Ha I was using it more as a term for an emulation box more than a retropie thing. I like portability so I was thinking of getting a GPDXD+ or maybe a Vita....not too sure yet. GPDXD+ can almost play GC games if you wipe & root it, plus it supports up to 500gb SD card....but I'd probably just use it for Dreamcast/DS and lower. It can also play android/mobile games using buttons which is nice and be hooked up to a tv with a controller. The mini consoles have an air of authenticity to them that I like as well though. Either way I think it's about time to upgrade from my OG Xbox & PSP!
@@stephenobrien6983 get a 128 or 256 flash drive and put Launchbox on it and you can carry the whole arcade and/or almost any console around on the flash drive and play it anywhere. Cheaper than any retro systems and completely customizable to suit your preferences. Just need a controller and you may already have that.
Custer's Revenge walkthrough? Lol very cool stuff. I probably won't get one as i have emulation on the PC but what a tidy little unit that can have the entire library installed on it. Good video Mur
Oh, it’s on there! Yeah, tidy indeed. With wireless controllers, this lil unit travels easily. I could see even taking it on vacation. We just went on vacation and damn if Disney hadn’t closed the arcade in the resort! I had my Switch at least. But yeah, perfect example right there.
Thanks so much! Yeah the SD capability is major incentive. It means you can grab a vanilla 9 model for $44 and basically have bought an hd Atari everdrive. That’s a deal.
Thank you for this instructional video. It's greatly appreciated! As someone who has two of the AtGames Atari Flashback systems, one being the Activision Gold 8 edition (which is what I happen to play the most out of all the flashback systems that I currently own: Colecovision, Intellision, NES, SuperNES, and the Blast! Paddle edition), the only practical or justifiable reason that I could be persuaded into purchasing another Atari Flashback through is by having the option of adding a library of ROM games to it. So, thanks again.
You bet and thanks for watching! I hope you’re subscribed and part of Mur-Nation. I really want the Coleco one and the Intellivision one. They’re high priced nowadays though so I’m hoping to scavenge them this season on the cheap!
@@Emceemur I was able to buy the Intellivision Flashback (Sam's Club extra overlay edition) through Amazon, and a Collecovision Flashback at a Walmart (they're out of stock now, but there are others on Ebay). The main motivation for me in getting the Collecovision was: Gateway to Apshai, Jumpman Junior, and Montezuma's Revenge. And, for the Intellivision: Utopia B-17 Bomber, and Crown of Kings (Dungeons and Dragons), though there are plenty of great additional titles on both. Good luck in obtaining them, and I just subscribed for future updates.
Great! Big Apshai fan here. If you search Apshai and Emceemur you’ll see a playthru we did Of Temple Of Apshai on c64 mini. That was my jam in the 80s.
@@Emceemur Fantastic! I used to play Gateway to Apshai on my Atari 800xl after first discovering it, by chance, on a shelf at a Sears department store.
That’s terrific! I don’t have an 800, I have a 400. I need one for the collection. I have a 1040ST and that’s my baby. We’ll be looking at gameplay on all of those in my vintage computing series.
Emceemur: Power Creator! Quality stuff, Mur. Even my daughter watching over my shoulder said, "Wow, I like the new look of Mur's stuff!" It's evident to all that you're stepping it up and raising the bar! Mur Nation! 😃
Hey Mur! Thank you for the reviews and the “how to” videos for the Atari Flashback 9 Gold. I’m 54 and got my Atari 2600(Sears version) when I was 13. I bought many games and played them for a number of years. I ended up giving the 2600 and all my games away to a poor family, as I started gaming with my Atari 800XL instead. I’m glad the family got some use out of it, but I wish that I had kept everything. Your videos convinced me to buy the Flashback and add ROMs. No regrets. I’ve loved playing the old games again, along with some I’ve never played. I’m glad that I bought the FB9 Gold instead of the FB10. The 9 is easier to add ROMs and is a better unit than the 10 in my opinion. I’m looking into buying the Legends Flashback Deluxe to add ROMs as well to play my SNES games I played with my kids when they were young.
Yes to literally everything you said. Lol the 400 & 800 were tanks, man. I’ve been so impressed with my 400. Only had access to 2600s & 5200s growing up. I’m working on some more legends flashback stuff right now as a matter of fact. It’s a tight lil unit contrary to popular belief.
So would it be a spoiler to your next episode to ask, regarding the Legends Flashback(not Deluxe) to let me know if I need to update the firmware on Legends Flashback before adding ROMs? I see that you reviewed the Deluxe Version, but I didn’t see a review on the regular Legends Flashback...
I did checkout your review of the Legends Flashback(not Deluxe) but basically want to know if the process for adding ROMs is the same in the 100 game version.
The newest model didn’t need an update at all. And it’s currently running NES SNES GENESIS and 2600. And the deluxe is no different than the non as far as the method. The older model (white & blue box) allegedly needed an update but I honestly don’t think it did.
Thank you so much for this! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll be doing this later today once my system arrives. I do have a question. Once you get done updating the firmware, can you pop the card back into your PC and get rid of that file to avoid the little annoyance of the update prompt going forth? Logically speaking, since you've already installed the update, the machine shouldn't need that file anymore in order to read the ROMS. I could be way off base (sometimes logic doesn't apply to electronics LOL), but I thought I'd run this by you for your thoughts. :)
Yes, you can delete that off and it won’t ask you to update anymore. I should’ve included that in the instructions but I hadn’t yet realized myself that I could do that.
Emceemur I kinda thought you could but hen, you never know sometimes. These things can sometimes be finicky. I thought about this because I did something similar with another one of my electronica gadgets, end it worked perfectly fine afterward.. The prompt would drive me nuts every time I turn the thing on.
Excellent work! That’s a steal right there. Once you get it outfitted with ROMs you’ll be stylin & profilin! Thanks for watching this and I hope you’ll subscribe and stick around!
Just so you know: you can use those rom sets even if you don't have the Flashback. I kept the files and stuck them into RetroArch and they play just fine.
You want to get one? Then my work here is done. Lol But yeah, it’s definitely worth it when rodded out like this. It’s basically an HD everdrive at this point. I’m stoked about it.
Heck yeah! Im having a blast with all the ROMs. We’re gonna livestream some more gameplay of em in the near future so subscribe and stick around. Gonna be a good time. There’s some wicked homebrew games on there. Halo 2600 is great!
@@Emceemur All downloaded, renamed, and loaded into the Flashback. lol too many games now. Simply HAD to try the legend.......E.T. Wouldn't you know it, I spent most of my time in a ditch. haha!
Yep, that’s ET! Ditch Simulator 1.0! I never knew what the hell to do in that game back in the day but I had friends that did and I played with them. ET definitely isn’t the worst out there but it’s an odd duck for sure. Lol
@@Emceemur ...and now my 19 year old boys are addicted to "Halo 2600" haha. And they questioned my choice of "family" christmas present ;) How dare they doubt my motives :D
It’s ridiculously playable! Really all the homebrews are. There’s a Christmas Donkey Kong on there where he’s a snowman and Mario is in a Santa suit. Lol just all around fun stuff.
Good stuff..I love the Atari flashback 9 and the fact that you could've added ur own games off an sd card..even tho have an original Atari 2600 with original cartridges, hell I even have an Atari 7800 with games..but the fact that I could ve added my favorite 2600 games or the ones I like that aren't included there it's something awesome..I 'll be purchasing the new Atari flashback X as well..btw cool game room!! 👌 👍
if they wanna add some games and not all u may wanna tell them to add a file called Game like that and add the games in or it wont work but good video :)
Alright last questions 1. What happens if you don’t use the advanced renamer for the games? 2. Because this video is relatively old, do you need to still install the update? 3. Do you need a gold flashback 9 or original?
Ok, so 1. The renamer makes sure the files can be recognized. If they don’t read right, they won’t boot. 2. None of these come ready to mod so the update is always necessary. 3. Either Flashback 9 will work. You might as well buy the cheaper one because you’re putting all the games on it anyway. No need to pay for extra ones preloaded. Hope this helps!
@@Emceemur yeah homebrews and cool stuff like that's awesome especially when you can put it all on one console like the Atari and just play the old school games that I kind of play someone I was like four and five over at my grandparents and my dad's house but yeah I love the video man that's good stuff let me know how life's going with you man everybody doing good in your family I hope it's starting to snow here so
Great video! Thank you for the info. I want one of these now! One question: Does the Flashback 9 have composite out or HDMI (or both)? Thank you. I liked and subscribed.
Family Dollar has a composite version of the flashback 9 (which I bought by mistake) and it is basically like they shoved the insides of portable version into this version of the console the only plus is there's no need to modify it and it will run all the ROMs right out of the box I'm guessing that mabe the original paddles from a flashback 7 will work with the composite version of the flashback 9 as well!
That actually sounds probable! I don’t even know why they bother making both models. Doesn’t seem cost effective or advantageous. Let me know if you get the old paddles working with it. That would of course mean it’s running off the old emulator. Wacky and very interesting stuff. Subscribe and stay in touch, dude!
you can remove the update after installing it because i have and it works fine and then you wont need to worrie about it asking u to up date the system every time u turn it on :)
Yes sir, that is correct. I’m having a lot of fun with this thing. But what’s really weird is my capture card won’t capture sound from the ROMs. Even in livestreams. It’s really peculiar because the sound is definitely there. But thanks for checking out the vid and I hope you’ll subscribe and stick around!!
Thanks for a great video! I got this for my dad and added the ROMS. It works great but you lose the "Recently Played" and "My Favorites" sections at the top. I don't see any way to get that functionality. Any ideas?
Thanks Bubba! But you lost the sections entirely? Or there’s just nothing in them? Because on mine, it doesn’t record ROM files in the recently played, but Im pretty sure it still records that you played the stock games on there. I’ll look again tomorrow to make sure I’m telling you right. But Im almost 100% sure on that... meanwhile I hope you’ll subscribe and stick around!
I guess I had better luck. After the firmware update, the "Recently Played" and "Favorites" WERE grayed-out...HOWEVER, once I played a few of the 110 "preloaded" games, the "Recently Added" category was no longer grayed out, but had the games I just played. I didnt check if SD card games were included in the "Recently Played" list, but Id assume not. I suspect the "Favorites" category also works similarly. FYI - Thank you so much for this detailed video, Emceemur! I can play all the games my parents tossed decades ago (and boy do I suck at most of them...)
Man, I’m glad you dug it! I’m enjoying these too, some of the homebrews & hacks are really cool. Subscribe and stick around because there’s more Atari stuff on the way. Gonna be playing a lot of 1040ST & 400 stuff in our vintage computing series I’m workin on.
Hello... from your video i ordered atari 9 cause i saw there was a way adding more games to the console... waiting for it to come..but have some questions 1)you have a tool to rename the games so they can play...do we have a video for that and how to do it? 2)transferring the games(zip file)to sd card from where ?i mean from our pc that we download the file?sorry i am not an expert but at least my computer doesnt have sd card slot ....
BTW I note that in this video and the Flashback classic video, you warn people that performing the upgrade may void the warranty. I'm not sure that's the case. Performing the upgrade is adding an upgrade provided by AtGames themselves. The printed sheet that comes with the consol TELLS you how to do it in simple steps, as does their website. I see no "this will void your warranty" warning on the sheet or on their web page. An upgrade from any other source, yes, that would be an issue. But this one is factory supported from what I can tell :/
I received an email from support when I asked a question about the firmware update, that stated they don’t give advice on, or warranty issues with a “3rd party” firmware alteration. Meaning the file from the AtariAge forum because that’s what was in question. I actually would hope I’m wrong on this. But for my integrity’s sake, I figured I should make mention of it. They very well may still warranty any and all units with updates. It’s a weird grey area... 😆
@@Emceemur Yep that sounds right :) But the "firmware update" part of the process isn't from the forum. That file is from AtGames. The ROMS (games) are from the forum. The AtGames (not third party) upgrade is the part that opens up SD Card use. Nothing else :) But I can also see you need to cover your backside otherwise people who make mistakes during the process will try and point the finger at you for sure.
@@Emceemur Additional: Sorry mate I just realised, yes you are 100% correct as YOU used an update from the forum n your video. My bad. I myself didn't. I got my update file DIRECT from AtGames which is probably the better way to do it. firmwareupdate.atgames.net/ As mentioned, this was detailed in the instructions that came with the console (in Australia anyway), and no other "update" was required to unlock SD card use. I didn't need to use the file from the forum. Only the ROMS.
And all that said, I’ve never filed a warranty with this company before so I don’t know the ins & outs. It’s like you said, I’m just covering my backside.
@@Emceemur Yeah it's all good. We're on the same page 100%. I hadn't remembered you'd used the forum for the update as well. Perhaps add the official AtGames link to the description also? It works the same and I can still play the ROMS from the SD card. My "guess" is that the forum's 'firmware update" is exactly the same file. Just someone has put it in the link to negate the need to "register" on the AtGames site (the official process I had to go through, which wasn't hard).
Hi Emceemur, I just got the Flashback 9 GOLD, and flashed it as per instructions and added the ROMs, so far so good. Thanks you so very much! I do have one little issue, if you don't mind. I noticed you have Astrosmash \ Astroblast, but when I try to play it is is really FAST and I can't control it. I have played other games off the SD card like Tron for example and all is good. Would you happen to have any insight on this?
It definitely seemed fast but it always has to me, I didn’t notice a difference. I gotta go back and look! I’m gonna check that out tonight and get back to you. I need to pop Astrosmash in and do a comparison. There may just be something off with the ROM. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention!
So this got complicated. Turns out I only have a physical copy of Astrosmash for the Intellivision. And my Intellivision needs a new AC adapter. Now, the Atari version is on the new Classics Vol. 3 which I have on Xbox One. That’s still not necessarily identical to the original. When compared to the ROM on the Flashback, they’re both the same speed but I really need the 2600 cartridge to answer this accurately...
I did the Legends Flashback console and it has all the Genesis titles now. I imagine that exact same procedure would work for it. It may have its own firmware update but that file should be referenced in your instructions 👍
@@Emceemur Alright cool and thank you for the info and reply! I have both the Atari and Genesis Flashbacks I like that they have the SD slot. You have a new Subscriber here!
The Atariage Rom Game Zip file was from 2017. Can you provide a link for a more updated file? Hopefully one that contains games & homebrews through 2020. Thx!
What can you recommend for this: I Want a game console with large joystick and buttons (sturdy) instead of using the joystick that comes with the atari 9. Do they make a console? kinda like a pandoras box console? I love your channel and look forward to your recommendation.
I’m glad you love the channel! Always great to hear. Controllers aren’t really AtGames strong suit as these are made cheap to sell cheap. If I was wanting something like you’re describing then yeah, I’d want a Pandora 6s or newer. I can’t remember if Genesis controllers worked on this Flashback or not. I need to check again and get back to you. I have the Genesis 3-button joystick that’s pretty well made. But it sounds like you’d enjoy the Pandora more since this is just 2600 games. The Legends Flashbacks allow multiple system types of ROMs to be added though. Just depends on how cheap you want everything to be.
@@Emceemur thanks for replying. Dumb question here. Does the Pandora have a way to get some extra games like you can on the atari 9 flashback? I've not searched Pandora well enough to know what is the best for having the classics like donkey kong, Jr, frogger, centipede, MS Pac, etc. Can you personally recommend one to me that you think would fit for my wants.
I would get the 6s model. They’ve come down in price. You can add games to them because I’ve actually seen em being sold without the games pre loaded. I wouldn’t want that headache. There are plenty of people on Amazon sellin em with over 2000 games pre loaded. That’s what I’d get. I will probably pick one up myself eventually.
@@Emceemur it's soo hard to find authentic from clones. Do you have by chance a vendor that you can send me a link to that sells the real Pandora box 6s? Thanks. You Rock!
I’m looking now and seeing so many vendors and options, I didn’t know anything about em being knockoffs. I do see a lot coming without the games added though and you definitely don’t want that. The good news is, either Amazon or EBay, as a buyer, you’re 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
They’re running pretty much neck and neck to be honest. The ability to play cartridges kinda falls flat due to the Retron’s many compatibility issues. Add an SD card to either and you’ve got all the games you need. I will say from a TH-camr’s perspective, I’ve dealt better with the Flashback because my capture card often won’t detect the Retron at all. Very strange.
They’re actually pretty nice! The battery tabs are improved on em too. If you plan to add the ROMs, the Gold is kind of pointless because you’ll get the games anyway.
Yes, the update I do in this vid is the AtGames firmware update. The links are in the description. Thanks for watching this! Hope you’ll subscribe and stick around.
Loaded the roms on my flashback a few days ago. Everything went smooth. Having a blast reliving some of my past! My kids seem to be enjoying them also.
Honestly, Im not sure why it matters. But that was specified in the packed in fold-out instructions. Maybe it wigs the firmware out. Honestly anything smaller will work. You can fit all those games into 1 gig. Thanks for watching and subscribe and stick around! More to come.
@@jonathonearl482 To be fair, it gets harder to find smaller cards as time goes on. Try finding a 4GB card out there. 16 should be safe still, but yeah, I can see where that would be less readily available than a 32GB.
Unfortunately they do not. But since it doesn’t play 7800 games that’s really not an issue. Thanks for watching and I hope you will subscribe and stay tuned!
Hi :). My wife wants me to find a way for her to play preliminary monty, Bruce lee and Zorro that she used to play when she was a kid. She doesn’t remember the console type. She has tasked me this as her birthday present (coming up) Can you help point me in the right direction? Can I find those on the Flashback 9? Or can I download them and put them on one?
Those games were on the Atari 8bit computers, the 400/800 & XE. This Flashback is only compatible with the 2600 ROMs. They could be emulated on PC but I can’t think of another way besides original equipment.
Did anyone else have problems putting the update on the console? I put the update on the sd card, but my flashback 9 console doesn't recognize the sd card. I assume the problem could be that I'm using a 16 GB card. I currently don't have anything smaller. Some youtubers say 16 GB cards don't work for this. They recommend using 8.
I used a 16, as shown in this vid. It worked fine. But my Legends Flashback has the same problem you’re describing. It just doesn’t recognize the update. So while my Atari Flashback works, my Legends unit may have an issue. Yet it worked with an out of date update file they had so I dunno. You can email support on the AtGames website and they will respond. Usually in a day or so.
I figured out how to do it now. I emailed atgames and they suggested renaming the folder on the sd card. They suggested deleting ".img" and just using "atari_update" So I tried that and it worked.
No sound at all? What kind of TV are you using? The Blast Flashbacks had compatibility issues where sound was concerned but hadn’t heard of issues with these yet.
@@Emceemur Hi, thanks for replying. We are using Element HD TV, We had sound briefly and then we start playing any game, the music and FX sounds goes away. We switched HDMI ports to use and suspect that it could be either our TV "Kapout" or the HDMI cable is broken somewhere
So is there music in the menu and just not in the game? I would try on a different tv just to see if it behaves any differently. If it does then it may not be compatible with the other tv. If it’s the same though, it’s probably a lemon and you could exchange it.
Hello, I just purchased one of these last night. I had the Flashback 2. I never really did anything with it as I was always looking for may favorites that we not there. When I saw theFB 9, I decided it was time to re-invest my interest and money back into the Atari FB series. I have tried with three different SD cards (4gb, 32gb and 128gb) to update the firmware to allow loading of games through the SD option. All appear to have failed. I added the atari_update.img to a fat32 formatted SD card and popped it in. the FB just boots to the main menu almost as if it doesn't see the device. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Its driving me crazy!
It’s gotta be a 16g or smaller card or it won’t work. But if you’ve unzipped the file and put it on a 4g (nothing else on the card) and it still didn’t recognize it, your unit may have an issue. I had another commenter having that problem but I never could figure out if he had a formatted card with only the update on it.
@@Emceemur Ok, I am doing to try a few more times. It doesn't work, I'll toddle on down to the Dollar General and swap it out. Also looking at the Legends console for the SD emulation option on that. Thank you very much for your quick response.
Is it possible to download only the ROMs for individual games you want? For example, if I don't want to download all 1,000+ ROMs, can you just download certain games?
Sure. Depending on where you get your ROMs from. If it downloads as a set, then that’s the easiest way to place them. But we did individually load a few by themselves first to make sure they worked. So it is possible.
Yes, this is an AtGames product. But no, it’s just 2600 games. But with the ROMset, you’re loaded with more 2600 action than u can shake a stick at. Their new collection for Xbox/PS4 has 5200 games on it though. I highly recommend it!!
Does it include Battlezone? That's the only question that I need an answer to. Answers Anyone? If yes I'm more than happy to spend the time and effort involved plus cash to get this ball rolling
Once you put these ROMs on here, there’s nothing you won’t have. But it’s not on there stock. The upgrade is easy to do though. And you only need a cheap sd card. And I’ll be streaming more of this system in the future so please subscribe and stick around!
You bet! And if you’re doing the mod, no need to buy the gold model. You’ll get all the games regardless. The regular Flashback 9 is only $39 on Amazon right now.
Such a thing does not exist. You will have to locate a set of ROMs online and set them up on your end. But luckily for you, we did an instructional video. 👍
I know the biggest sd card is 16gig but what is the minimum you actually need to get all the games that will work on system. Also thanks for making video.
They can fit on one as small as 4gigs. And use the advanced renamer tool to rename the files quickly. Link in the description. And most important, subscribe and stay tuned!
No worries. Email Jon with GenXGrownup at the email in the video. He can offer some pointers on that. As far as an actual arcade donkey kong on this thing, I’m afraid it can’t really run that.
Anyone know if you can add another folder called "covers" or "screenshots" or something else, that would show thumbnails for the added roms, versus just a generic image?
i just got Atari Flashback 9 other day it didnt come with joystick i have old older joystick i use on c64 it seems work how ever i all ways have to turn it off then back on start another game i tryed to use joystick from use Atari Flashback 8 it didnt work. oh my goodness i didn't know sd needs to be upside down make it work thanks
I'm surprised the 8 controller didn't work. It's been awhile since I plugged my 9 up. All the same games are on my Legends Flashback but I would definitely prefer to use the OG joystick 🕹️
It’s definitely on the ROMset. In the livestream I did, I’m pretty sure we played it. I almost bought a physical copy on eBay once. It was nice to finally get to play it. Thanks for the sub! More Atari to come.
How did you get it to show the game names when accessing the SD card on the Flashback??? mine all say "MyFile001.bin" and so on. No game names! HELP!!! (Thanks)

Oh I always wanted to mod an original Xbox! I’ve got a couple on my workbench I’d like to do that to but they don’t read discs. And apparently that’s a requirement as well as a copy of Splinter Cell.
Yeah buddy! Superman is on there. And there are hacks and brews of a lot of popular games that make them a whole new series for those revisiting them. Thanks for watching this and I hope you have subscribed to the channel. More Atari action coming soon.
@@Emceemur I download it as per the instructions, extract the files, and pull the extracted files over to the SD card. I put the SD card into the Atari, and turn it on, and nothing happens. Nothing at all.
So lets see here, first off, I just wanna troubleshoot some. Make sure the SD Card is empty when you start, nothing else on it. When you download and extract the file, there should be a folder that says MAC OS and the update file which is about 4k kb. If you’ve done all that and then put it in and it never prompts you to do the update, you may need to reach out to tech support. However, if the SD Card option has appeared, that almost suggests that its updated. Once you delete all that and add the GAME folder and the ROMs, the SD Card tab should then display the games as shown in the vid. Let me know what happens.
@@Emceemur the SD card has been formatted and it blank. I download the file, and get the MAC OS folder, and then a Disc Image File named Atari_update. When I put the SD card into the Atari, and click on the SD card option (which is there even if an SD card is not installed), it just goes back to the home screen. It is the last page on the list of the games, and the options on that screen are SD Card, and "About." When I click the SD Card option, it says "loading" but then again returns to the home screen
You should still be able to use it though. The Commodore 64 mini was only in Europe for the longest time and I couldn’t wait. I found a site with free shipping to the states. You should be able to order a Flashback and have it shipped.
@@Emceemur I got it now. It's on "remove pattern". There you just have to type in the space and it removes all spaces from the files, very nice to know.
@@Emceemur Sorry, but I'm not very good with the computer stuff. Therefore I'm very happy that I got it to work now. Thank you very much for all the Info's.
@@Emceemur yeah but it did not say the command,i found out i can use Powershell ,goto the games dir and type - get-childitem *.bin | foreach {rename-item $_ $_.name.replace(" ","_")} - No - of course and it would replace all spaces with _ Like 3d_Golf_Would_Have_Been_Cool.bin
Unfortunately not. The plug n plays that Arcade 1Up sold though, the Pacman and Megaman ones, I believe do run 7800 games. They don’t run the controller though.
The game was fly one that I was Triangle fly & the energy was ring & the ground stuff can be destroyed bye bomb & the ground was circles & boxes like sharp, so can you find out watch game that is & tell my the name of the game please
At the end & big plant that sharp like box come down from the top screen & stop then move up untail you hit the middle of it then stop moving all togther
I didn’t do that. It worked just fine. Maybe depends on the type/brand of SD? I dunno. But yeah, I just popped it in and ran with it. That’s interesting though. I appreciate ya checkin this out.
What do you think about what you saw here? Are you interested in one of these? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!
Any idea on a UK release date?
I don’t know. But I’ll be reaching out to support after the holidays for an unrelated matter and I’ll be sure to ask 👍
So there isn’t one at this time. But, if you could order the system, you’d just need a usb power supply.
Life is good 😎
Just got flashback 9 today, did this hack and wow got the 2600 space invaders/frogger/Pac-Man the lot. Totally fantastic video, many thanks
Thank you very much! I’m glad you’re digging it. It is a cool machine. Stay tuned for more Atari stuff in the Tuesday livestreams and in my vintage computing vids!
Yeah the SD card does kinda make up for the nes roms
Do the Sd Card games have sound?
Bill Dineen yes they do, just go for it, it’s amazing to play the original 2600 space invaders on this machine
That’s a good tip. Lot of specifics with these updates! One wrong move and its poop.
Thanks for the tip! That solved my problem!
Thank you so much for the video! My Atari flashback has over a thousand of games now! You guys rock!
I just got one two days ago... I'm totally doing this! Had no clue that I could do this as I've not looked close yet... Great vid!💛🎮👾👽
You’re in for a treat, Nate! Halo on 2600 is actually pretty tight! Lol
I have never wanted to get an AtGames Atari flashback until I found out there would be an SD slot on the 9. Great video idea bro, well done.
Thanks so much! Yeah the SD capability is major incentive. It means you can grab a vanilla 9 model for $44 and basically have bought an hd Atari everdrive. That’s a deal.
@@Emceemur The HDMI is also a nice touch, too.
The main motivation for me in getting the Collecovision was: Gateway to Apshai,
Jumpman Junior, and
Montezuma's Revenge.
And, for the Intellivision: Utopia
B-17 Bomber, and Crown of Kings (Dungeons and Dragons), though there are plenty of great additional titles on both.
Mur Nation! 😃
Hell yeah dude! I’m glad the approval ratings are high! Big tymin!
Emceemur I’m excited to get my Legends Flashback! Now the hunt for ROMs begins!
MC I found your channel because of Atari and now that you have over 1,000 games ready to be streamed in HD... I don't know if I can handle it! 🤯
I’m tellin ya! I can scarcely contain my own excitement. Over 1k games! I’m gonna livestream it soon and we will tour the roster!
Thanks for the super-helpful walk-through! Endless gaming adventures await me!
You bet! I had tons of fun with these Atgames units. People dawg on em but they’re really a cheap thrill.
Very tempting, I love the added card slot. Play some homebrew carts and all the fun stuff!
We’re totes gonna! Probably stream some of it tomorrow and we can take the tour together!
I really like that your doing these so we all get to see what's up and get the low down. Great video man.
Thanks so much KDB. Yeah, this thing, $45 and a $10 SD card and you’re off to the races! It’s a fantastic deal. And it’s light and travels eazy!
Found a working one with two controllers for 15$ at goodwill so excited!
Good to know, thanks! I guess it makes sense they would work there too. And thanks for watching!
Great video! I want to get one... So happy to see that SD card slot.
You want to get one? Then my work here is done. Lol But yeah, it’s definitely worth it when rodded out like this. It’s basically an HD everdrive at this point. I’m stoked about it.
I did pick up the Flashback 8... but this is just so much better! .. curious to know if Pitfall 2 works on it? .. It doesn't work on the portable.
Pitfall II is actually on it, stock! It was one of the additions this year! It works like a champ. Runs like a scalded cat.

A must add
Alright last questions
1. What happens if you don’t use the advanced renamer for the games?
2. Because this video is relatively old, do you need to still install the update?
3. Do you need a gold flashback 9 or original?
Ok, so
Great video awesome stuff can't wait to get my flashback 9 in and at all them games to it
Hell yeeeah boi! That’s what’s up. There’s some rockin brews on here too. Mario stuff, souped up PacMans and even the Halo brew.

Great video! Thank you for the info. I want one of these now!
One question: Does the Flashback 9 have composite out or HDMI (or both)?
Thank you. I liked and subscribed.
I appreciate that dude! Just an HDMI port on this one. But yeah the addition of the SD slot is a big selling point. And it wasn’t too much of a pain.
@@RyGuy0520 i also have the composite version, mine is not reading the roms, anything special you had to do?

Thanks I.P.! You’re the best.
you can remove the update after installing it because i have and it works fine and then you wont need to worrie about it asking u to up date the system every time u turn it on :)
Try anethor hdmi wire sometimes the 1080p will dont mix well with the 720 and try sprying cold air in the ports too
Thanks for a great video!
@@Emceemur yep they are grayed out and not able to move to them to select.

Yes, the file from your PC to the SD card. If your PC doesn’t have an SD card slot, you’ll need to borrow one that does.
@@Emceemur thank you for the quick response...i will look the video for the rename games...
I got my update file DIRECT from AtGames which is probably the better way to do it. firmwareupdate.atgames.net/
As mentioned, this was detailed in the instructions that came with the console (in Australia anyway), and no other "update" was required to unlock SD card use.
@@Emceemur Thanks so much! Very interested to see what you find out.
I love your connsle videos
Oh me TOO! Lets do more
Can you do a video for the Atgames Sega Genesis flashback HD 2018 with the SD card slot?
I did the Legends Flashback console and it has all the Genesis titles now. I imagine that exact same procedure would work for it. It may have its own firmware update but that file should be referenced in your instructions 👍
@@Emceemur Alright cool and thank you for the info and reply! I have both the Atari and Genesis Flashbacks I like that they have the SD slot. You have a new Subscriber here!
Sweet! Glad to have you aboard! I livestream Tuesday’s nights at 8pm EST so feel free to come hang with us.
The Atariage Rom Game Zip file was from 2017. Can you provide a link for a more updated file? Hopefully one that contains games & homebrews through 2020. Thx!
There may be updated files out there, I don’t know. I haven’t added anything to this unit since this video was made.
Una pregunta no se puede agregar la imagen original del juego?? Para que se vea el catálogo de los rooms y no solo se vea el dibujo de la tarjeta
As far as I know, there’s no way to add the actual images to the files. But thanks for watching this!
Would a ChampGames rom work on this system? Or Circus Convoy?
If they are 2600 ROMs then yeah, probably. This is running Donkey Kong Christmas and Halo 2600 and other brews.
Does this work for the regular Atari Flashback 9 or just the Gold model? Thanks!
Yes, it works for both.
Sorry if I'm repeating a previous question, couldn't find it but can you do this process with a Mac? Thanks!
Oh, no worries. From what I’ve discussed with folks, no, its not possible on a mac. Formats are all funky.
Wish I could see a current comparison of the Retron 77 vs. the Atari Flashback 9 - which is better? Why?
They’re running pretty much neck and neck to be honest. The ability to play cartridges kinda falls flat due to the Retron’s many compatibility issues. Add an SD card to either and you’ve got all the games you need. I will say from a TH-camr’s perspective, I’ve dealt better with the Flashback because my capture card often won’t detect the Retron at all. Very strange.
@@Emceemur Lastly how are the joysticks on the Flashback 9 and is it worth getting the GOLD version?
They’re actually pretty nice! The battery tabs are improved on em too. If you plan to add the ROMs, the Gold is kind of pointless because you’ll get the games anyway.
Did you register and download the firmware from Atgames before you got these other ROMs ?
Yes, the update I do in this vid is the AtGames firmware update. The links are in the description. Thanks for watching this! Hope you’ll subscribe and stick around.
@@Emceemur thanks, appreciate it.
You bet 👍
Loaded the roms on my flashback a few days ago. Everything went smooth. Having a blast reliving some of my past! My kids seem to be enjoying them also.
Glad to hear that! I loaded the Legends Flashback up with Genesis/MegaDrive roms and I’m havin fun with that thing too!
Can use other controllers on it like the hyperkin genisis controllers
It only works with the controllers it came with, as far as I can tell.
why no larger than a 16 gig card? and what is the small size card that can be used?
Honestly, Im not sure why it matters. But that was specified in the packed in fold-out instructions. Maybe it wigs the firmware out. Honestly anything smaller will work. You can fit all those games into 1 gig. Thanks for watching and subscribe and stick around! More to come.
@@jonathonearl482 To be fair, it gets harder to find smaller cards as time goes on. Try finding a 4GB card out there. 16 should be safe still, but yeah, I can see where that would be less readily available than a 32GB.
Also do Atari 7800 controllers work / compatible with these ?
Unfortunately they do not. But since it doesn’t play 7800 games that’s really not an issue. Thanks for watching and I hope you will subscribe and stay tuned!
Does it include Superman and any of the Star Wars games?
Not factory, no. But in the added ROMs? Absolutely.
@@Emceemur That's what I meant to ask, my bad
Thanks man.
You bet, P.C. !
Hi :). My wife wants me to find a way for her to play preliminary monty, Bruce lee and Zorro that she used to play when she was a kid. She doesn’t remember the console type.
She has tasked me this as her birthday present (coming up)
Can you help point me in the right direction? Can I find those on the Flashback 9? Or can I download them and put them on one?
Those games were on the Atari 8bit computers, the 400/800 & XE. This Flashback is only compatible with the 2600 ROMs. They could be emulated on PC but I can’t think of another way besides original equipment.
Can this be done with a chrome book or do I need a full laptop?
You need to be able to stick an sd card in it. Other than that there isn't much of a requirement.
I forgot to ask is there a quick way to rename all games to no spaces or do you have to do it one by one. TIA
Nice!! I should try that on the Legends one. I appreciate you sharing that intel. 👍
Will homebrew ROM’s, like Pacman 4K, work too?
Indeed they will! Pac-Man 4k is on here now.
Bought mine yesterday and I'm having issues. There is no sound, when it's on. It's been running without the SD card.

16g, according to the instructions.
This game console ( Atari Flashback 9 ) is Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 games ?
Yes, this is an AtGames product. But no, it’s just 2600 games. But with the ROMset, you’re loaded with more 2600 action than u can shake a stick at. Their new collection for Xbox/PS4 has 5200 games on it though. I highly recommend it!!

Such a thing does not exist. You will have to locate a set of ROMs online and set them up on your end. But luckily for you, we did an instructional video. 👍
I know the biggest sd card is 16gig but what is the minimum you actually need to get all the games that will work on system. Also thanks for making video.

@@Emceemur I download it as per the instructions, extract the files, and pull the extracted files over to the SD card. I put the SD card into the Atari, and turn it on, and nothing happens. Nothing at all.
It's the same old Atari. No update, nothing. Even if I scroll to the SD card slot on the Atari, and click on it, it doesn't do anything.
