      And a Takstar Hi2050 (3.5mm)
      Is worth it to use the USB Soundcard on the Takstar or should i use the P2 and say, fuck this USB Soundcard?
      PS: I use a onboard audio "Realtek ALC898 codec"

    just a quick note, the voltage seen on the mic is called mic bias and it is what drives the microphone and in some cases the circuit controlling the buttons (apple headset), pretty much the higher the voltage the louder the signal when compared to the background noise... with certain limitations of course
    source, I'm a Audio engineer

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +amanuense Awesome! Thank you very much! I wish these mass produced chinese microphones had better documentation and listed the mic bias voltage. I also wish these soundcard companies listed the voltage passed through.

    • @amanuense
      @amanuense 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Podcastage i dont see that happening, i assume these companies are testing with electret mics. that is pretty common, even for cellphones (i work on audio for certain phones) mic bias is only 1.8v since that is enough for most electret mics. noise floor is pretty high for the same reason.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      amanuense Yeah. These mics are pretty noisy when they're getting about 2.5v but once it's up to ~4.5v the amount of noise deceases a LOT. I think the mic bias is probably around 2v, but to get the best results, a minimum of ~4.3 is required.

    PLEASE, I wanna know how does the Optical Shop 5.1 sounds when supplied with 48V Neewer Phantom power!!!!!

  • @luoyisishimisi470
    @luoyisishimisi470 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I told you I was going to stay tuned in for this. This was extremely informative. That multi-meter was really very helpful as we were able to see exactly what power was being delivered to the mic via the cord from the sound card. The Sabrent products out performed the rest by passing in the volts delivered and the lack of background noise tests. However, some others did do okay when it came to the background noise. While others were excruciatingly loud when it came to the background noise. I also could not believe how much the percentage difference was between these sound cards. I mean, from the Sabrent products and a few others, it was like a 74% to 84% hike in gain to get the same volume. That's a big whopper of a difference. I wonder is the Sabrent sound card a German made product. I was shocked at how the sound card by Audio Technica performed---very shocked, indeed!!! I have to put three exclamation marks behind that statement. What I can't figure out is why did the Syba and the Gino 7.1, which provided close to what the Sabrents delivered in voltage to the the mic, clip. It also is a mystery, at least to me, why all the sound cards have pretty much the same voltage going into the sound cards, and yet most of them cut the voltage delivered to the mic by a significant amount . Maybe this was done by the manufacturers to keep down clipping. I don't know. Thanks a bunch for reviewing the Trond and the Optical Shop 5.1. The Optical Shop 5.1 was horrible. I'm so glad you included it in the lineup cause I was looking at this neat looking box on Ebay, but it appear that this is all that it is, a neat looking box. Thanks a million for this video. Two thumbs up and 5 stars!!!

    I have the MXL 990 and I have the same problem at 4:56 - 5:05 I was thinking it was the onboard soundcard from my asus z170-a. I get the same problem when I plug the 1/4" plug into the frontal ports of the case. I was thinking it was just interference from the case so I thought of getting an external soundcard. Not sure which is best..

    Could you also please comment on the audio output quality? Also, there is usually an option to select between 16bit/24bit and from 44100Hz to 192000Hz, could you please comment on the availability and performance of those options?
    I was originally thinking about buying the ATH but went with WRIGHT instead and am pretty happy with the result, but it has a maximum of 16 bit 48KHz in case of both in and out. Also, since it is a TRRS (2 in 1), the mic input is mono only (doesn't matter to me though)
    I would like to know how well the others fare and which one is a good idea

  • @krishofstadter

    Thanks. Two questions you might be able to help out with:
    1) How much worse are these 'small' soundcards to bigger, more expensive ones e.g. Tracktor Audio 2 when it comes to playing a DJ set from a laptop?
    2) On a macbook pro laptop 2015 [where we don't have any speaker and mic jack separately any more, but one minijack that spits into two] is it possible to redefine the mic input to be used as an output? Perhaps with a software like Soundflower or Jack pilot alike?
    The idea here would be to connect the 'normal' output to the speakers and the 'redefined' mic input as an audio output for the headphones for pre-listening?
    Many thanks! k

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) I don't DJ nor have I ever DJ'ed so I don't know what the requirements would be. An interface designed specifically for DJ-ing, I imagine would be a LOT better.
      2) I'm not aware of any way to turn the mic input into an audio output.

I tried friends hyper x USB sound card and that fixed the issue. Wondering what current usb sound card you recommend or whats the best way to fix this audio interference? Thanks man!

      I did not say that. It depends on what your input settings are. Did you select the mic as the input?

    • @Hengary
      @Hengary 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and does not detect it ie I speak through the microphone and the bars do not move, I was investigating and I read that the ps400 gives an analog output and that you have to put a sound card to turn it into digital or something like that
      PS: I really love your videos!

  • @RoyalSoulCrafter
    @RoyalSoulCrafter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You did no noise reduction right? Also, is the BM-800 original or is it the chineese one? Is XLR even viable if i don't have an audio interface?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      no noise reduction or any post processing done. It's a bm800 you buy on amazon...they're all mass produced chinese mics. XLR to XLR is not viable because you cannot connect it to anything. Lucky for you the bm800 comes with xlr to 3.5mm which allows you to connect the mic to the sound card.

    Are any of the usb soundcards you tested able to take input stereo and not just mono? Do you have a recommendation for one that will input a stereo signal? Great stuff!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Beaulieu I haven't come across any USB soundcards that allow for a stereo signal. The only thing I could think of would be have two mics, and two USB soundcards, and run the mics in a 90-degree xy setup. But that's pure speculation and I don't know if you could do that. Any mic that you would want to run in a 90-degree xy would probably be a condenser mic, so you'd need two phantom power supplies as well. This would be a MESS to set up I bet.

  • @sandypickleuwu

    I noticed that you no longer recommend using these for microphone setups and such, but would it be okay to use it for just headphones and output? I accidentally broke the 3.5mm output port on the front of my computer case and I don't want to use the speaker port in the back of the case because of how it plays back my recorded audio (just on the left side). I know I can easily edit this to play on both sides, but it becomes a hassle and ruins my workflow. Would it be okay to use this rather than trying to repair the port?

    Hey Podcastage! I'm stuck with USB Sound Cards :( I can only bought;
    HDE 7.1
    Plugable Stereo
    ATR2USB
    Gino 7.1
    ('cause Amazon doesn't send Syba to my country)
    and i'm gonna use this sound card with InnoGear 48V PhantomPower. HDE 7.1 looks good, but it makes a background noise. (I'm buying a sound card, because you said that 'you still need a sound interface even you had a phantom power'). Is HDE 7.1 would still have background noise when i connect them with a phantom power? And please can you answer quick. Because i need to order immediate.
    Thank you and sorry for my English :)

  • @anony_meows

    i think for the puprose of just recording simple podcast, the sabrent is really good, but not very useful in other area. if with only 2% gain you get that much signal then it's clearly too hot. a signal mismatch. for other purposes it would be wise to add attenuation (-10 or -20dB reduction, by means of another device such as an attenuator cable) so you don't stuff the headroom. particularly useful if you are recording higher level of source such (line level) for example if you're taking input from a mixer/cd player.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ditya.alamsyah Very true and very good idea. That would be very interesting to test out. Do not think many people have the technical know how to set this up. Also, for ~$30 an audio interface can be purchased which is what I recommend now.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @anony_meows
      @anony_meows 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Podcastage well, i've never really encountered this kind of thing before since i've always checked the input source and matched it to where i'm plugging it to, but on top of my head and a brief 'ol google search brought me to this link ebay.to/1VJernt. you plug it between the input of your soundcard and your mic.
      the more useful thing is to research each type of signal and where we should plug it (mic level, instrument level, line level). there's still much to learn for me too. would love if people can correct me whether i'm making a solid judgement on this or not

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 ปีที่แล้ว
