Thanks, Lee! Looking at my analytics, there is a huge drop off in viewers in the first few seconds so I'm trying to make it more engaging so viewers don't click off the video right away.
Every time I see Little Buddy I am amazed at how big he is now. Lol. It has been a long time since we had sheep and broiler chickens. I bet Blue loved those necks and livers. Cool video
This is awesome. Wtg Dave! I’m trying to learn these tricks for our eventual homestead move. Dave reminds of of why I need to make sure to network and talk to people; it all helps.
This is such an awesome idea!! My boyfriend and I are in the process of purchasing a house with an acre of land and I want to get sheep. I think this would be great so the sheep won't be able to tear up the whole lot. Plus, he knows how to weld, so this sounds like a future project for us!
Happy to see you happy. Keep it up. Hoping to see you someday as a successful homesteader (satisfied and at peace). You've got an inspiring story. Subscribed to your channel for a while now. Greetings from Philippines. 👍
I love your videos, but if I could make one recommendation is to even out the volume between the music and y'all talking. because I have to turn the sound up to hear yall talk then back down because the music is then way too loud, just makes for a busy video.
I needed to adjust as well. Granted I was eating lunch and the kids were running around crazy. If I had a quiet place to listen or headphones to wear I probably wouldn't have needed to.
Everyone working together is great. The new pen works so much better, Dave done a awesome job. Things are coming right along. The chicken lady is worth her weight in gold 🙏. Happy for y’all, great video. ♥️🙏♥️🙏
Hey, the video turned out good. Kinda cringe seeing myself on video, but that's probably just me. 😂 I'll call you about meeting up early next week to weld on the padeyes and some hooks if you want them. Drop off the 4" grinder and cup wheel also. Shelly and I had alot of fun building it, some good experience too. Mostly just feels good to help out a new friend.
You are doing a great job! I respect you for growing and learning to deal with tough life situations!! (for we know they will come) Found you through Justins channel. Liked !! New Sub !!
I think Justin mows down the really tall grass a bit to make it easier to move. Plus the sheep enjoy the shorter, more tender grass I believe. Just a suggestion to make things easier for ya! Doing great!!
Thanks, Laura. He mows it a week or two in advance so it grows back some by the time the sheep get there. We get a lot less rain so if I mow it won't grow back in time.
Dave -- good on 'ya for stepping up and helping your neighbor out of the goodness of your heart, thank you and bless you. And thanks for mentioning that the cheapest buzz box :-) can be used to make this, I'm getting one of those 120v 15/20 amp cheapo flux core welders and this is one of the projects I had in mind. Dan -- What do you think about instead of using caster-style wheels using those 26" wheels that Justin uses on his chick-shaw? Their axles would have to be about 10" or so up on the frame, but other than that I don't see a problem, and it seems they might make it easier to move? Anyway, always wondered that about this cage. Very cool video, thanks so much.
Thank You Ted! That BB will certainly do the job, just get some scrap and practice some. I think that you could make just about any wheel work. I'd just be aware that the wider the wheel, the better the floatation over soggy ground. Good luck.
I love this idea! I want to put my ram in here to mow my yard and move him around. He’s pretty big though. He’s an east friesian. He also may need a buddy.
Nice to see you found a welder to build your sheep tractor! I had one built myself earlier this year. I have one question...what size are the wheels you put on it? I had a terrible time finding wheels for mine, and ended up settling for smaller wheels that don't do that well in the pasture. Thanks! And congrats!!
Don't know what Dan used, but personally I wouldn't want less than 12 inches. Personally I just use 4 cattle panels linked together with tie wire or _high strength_ carabiners [at least one joint with the carabiners for an access point] and walk it forward half of one side at a time. Doesn't work with babies though, they have to get up to a month+ old before they won't just walk through the cattle panel holes.
Would your welder happen to be anywhere near Greenville SC? I would love to get one of these to move my ram around so I don’t have to mow. But I have no welder skills and would be glad to pay someone to do this
This is awesome! I saw Joel Saladin do something similar with his chickens. I’m trying to think of a way to construct movable sheep fence like that without welder... Any thoughts?? I was thinking maybe something with pvc post and some wire, but i’m not sure.
Hey, do you think a 2x2 or maybe a 2x3 frame as opposed to the tube steel and fencing staple would be strong enough for the sheep tractor? I probably won't be adding a welding setup to my shop for a year, or maybe two but we want to do a couple of feeder sheep this year.
I edited my comment because I misread yours. I don't think 2x2 would be strong enough. Maybe 2x3 but the weight can be an issue for moving it manually.
Loving your videos! So the sheep stay in there 24/7? I'm just starting out and trying to figure out when to have them out and when I might want to bring them in to dry paddock. I live in California so no snow. ☺ and how often do you move them?
Yes, the sheep live in it full time. I move them once a day right now because they are in a lush area. I have others areas that I will have to move them more often and supplement with hay
I mentioned them in the video. It's 8 20' sticks of 1x1x1/8" metal tube, three cattle panels, four wheels, a door latch set, and a metal plate used for the wheel wells and gussets
What’s the name of the person who processes your chickens? I live outside Spokane an might be interested using them next year if it’s not too far from us.
No, it's to save a lot of time every day not having to set up and break down fencing. I have a perimeter fence. I have a guard dog. I have several bundles of electric fencing. Yes, there are wolves, coyotes, cougars, and bears in my area.
I believe A+ would explode adding an on farm hunting lease with meat processing. The boys go through hunters safety. Could add so much content utube doesn't want. Can't wait to see some ring venison sausage on the farm table.
i have a question?? dont you guys use the hearts, livers, neck, gizzards to make gravey with? grand ma would roll over in her grave if she saw us boys waste food like that,, the feet were ok to give to the dogs but not those other parts,,,,, that sheep pen was cool, a new earth friendly lawn mower that fertilizes at the same time,, your on to some thing there,, thank you for the tips
It's not wasting. That was Blue's food for that day. I didn't have to feed him other things. I like to give the dogs some of the harvest since they did the work in protecting the livestock
Thanks for the video, we are thinking sheep might be the next animal on our homestead. Is your mobile pen still working well for you? Is two the max for that size? THANKS!
Yeah, if the pasture is lush enough 10x10 should be enough for two sheep ^~^ If it's not lush enough you're just going to have to move it multiple times a day lol
@@TheGrassfedHomestead I did that once when I was running a steer with a lamb in a mobile pen. Do not enjoy that experience at all lol, but yeah Hay is an option on the table

That little girl was so cute. She hung right in there.
Could you pull the mobile pen with the garden tractor? You could then mow behind the sheep (if that's your style.)
It's not strong enough. Well, it's actually more of a tire issue probably. They'd just spin trying to pull that.
When we get the padeyes on it, We'll hook a chain to the mower. Might be suprised, it's possible.
@@TheGrassfedHomestead That little Cub Cadet can't pull as much as you and your son? I don't know what model it is but it is worth trying.

This is awesome! I saw Joel Saladin do something similar with his chickens. I’m trying to think of a way to construct movable sheep fence like that without welder... Any thoughts?? I was thinking maybe something with pvc post and some wire, but i’m not sure.
Joel Salatin built a smaller version out of wood. I don't know the exact dimensions but probably 8'x8'

How many sheep can it fit? Can you explain the cost benefit analysis?
I wouldn't do more than two in a 10x10. Cost benefit analysis topic is a good idea. I'll see if I can get that in a video without it being too boring

You feed your chicken guard dog raw chicken parts. Well, that seems risky. Oh well, still learning, I guess.
I'd be a bit leary of giving a dog raw chicken, if he's to guard my chickens. The taste of blood can trigger latent hunter/killer instincts in a dog.
It's not an issue with Blue. It just depends on the dog
Growing up raising animal we never feed raw meat always boiled first. Nothing will make a dog a chicken killer than feed raw chicken to it. smell then same taste for blood one gets hurt lose the whole flock.
true for some dogs, not for others. It's never made any difference for Blue
