- Today on The Viall Files we are joined by The Bachelorette herself, Katie Thurston. Katie shares with us what we didn't see when it came to Tre & Thomas and why she used the word “unkind” upon his exit. We find out more about Blake sliding into her DM’s before coming on the show and who she thought the person coming in could be. Then Nick takes some time to get to know Katie a little bit more away from the show and we learn more about what makes this strong woman, strong.

I feel like Katie is just promoting the show this whole time rather than actually connecting with Nick or revealing much about herself. I expected more depth. :(
She might have a hard time balancing that vulnerability with keeping the season spoiler free, it sounds emotionally exhausting
She probably didn't have a handler with her because the interview was so late so they probably told her Gear it more towards the show we know Nick be careful that kind of thing. Especially because it's being aired currently where is normally he would see the lead later in the season especially with him being on set already. I feel like he did that date really early in the season.
I am excited for Michelle. I feel like Katie should have just gone on Bachelor in Paradise to date. Michelle is just so sweet, mature, and a genuine role model. She literally works with children towards community leadership. She is going to be an amazing friend, wife, and mother.

I love the fact that they had both women, they are strong in their own ways and relate to different types of people and there is space for both. I love Michelle too but she will not relate to everybody and her season will be really different
this podcast really put a bad taste in my mouth. Katie came off as almost mean and egotistica. I still don’t see why she felt the need to send Thomas off so harshly and the way she sexualized him made me uncomfortable. And exposing Mike’s sexual life was very uncalled for and wrong. Not to mention, she can’t name 5 countries in Africa? I tried to give her a chance but the vibes I got from her were confirmed in this podcast.

ABC did not show us a reason to get rid of Thomas! Everyone is questioning what the heck really happened. He seems like just a normal guy who is a little smarmy, a little slick. Not a horrible villain. Other than that I absolutely love Andrew S. He is honest and smart and sexy AF!!
I'll agree with the ladder part - Andrew S is hot AF and better be the next Bachelor. As for Thomas, he got what he deserved IMO.
I think the reason Abc did not show us a reason to get rid of / dislike Thomas is because ….SPOILER BELOW
He goes on bachelor in paradise and couples up with Becca Kufrin the beloved ex bachelorette ! The show wants us to get behind this match and for him to have a great redemption story.
Although I don’t 100% agree with Katie sending Thomas home, I desperately didn’t want her to end up in a Jed situation. So ultimately I’m proud of her for listening to her gut.
She fully says she picks guys who aren't good enough for her. I think she will 100% pick a Jed.

The problem is that she didn't listen to her gut. She listened to what others were saying about Thomas. Her immediate gut's reaction was that he was sincere.
I so appreciate Katie's take on motherhood and the social pressures as a woman to have children. I am a 41 yr old woman who has CHOSEN to not have children and I am constantly faced with questions and yes, even accusations that there is something wrong with me. I have nieces and nephews that mean the world to me, and maybe in 10 yrs I will adopt a child that really needs love. Every woman's path is different, and I am very grateful that finally there is a Bachelorette that fucking gets it! Thank you!
I plan to have a childfree life coz I love what that offers. The thought of having a kid depresses dafuq out of me
@Jolene Carley THIS!!! I am 45 and kids for me were never really high on my to do list. Actually they were never on the to do list, period. But I met my longterm boyfriend in my late thirties, and so kids just never happened either. Before that I always had relationships that lasted a year or two, but they never got to the point where I thought, you would be a person, with whom I could see bringing a child into the world. But you know what I also think, I think some people romanticize kids so much. They think about the cute baby clothes and they obsess about the decor of the baby room, and they forget that there are a lot of things that can go very wrong with a child. My good friend spent years in and out (more “in” the hospital) at the oncology department with her child. That’s just one example. An acquaintance had a stillbirth. And then a coworker’s toddler had a freak accident and fell out of a second story window. There is just a lot that can happen, and I feel that many women romanticize the idea of having a child. Not to mention children are so expensive, especially nowadays. But to come back to your point, yes, the social pressure is ridiculous. I remember Jennifer Aniston mentioning in several interviews “my purpose as a woman did just not include having a child”. Society is just going to have to deal.
Absolutely agree! I'm also in my 40's and do not have the slightest desire for kids. I adore spending time with my niece and nephews, but also love when it's time for them to go home. I've had people say they are going to pray for kids in my life and I've told them to save those prayers for people who want kids and can't have them. DO NOT waste them on me.

This interview was so sex negative on Katie’s part, I can’t even. Referring to Mike P. by alluding to a body part and laughing that it’s “unused” is just gross. Also her referring to the guys as “shitty guys” right from the start is totally uncalled for. She then calls previous exes unattractive and says that we assume she only dates 10s? Girl, who ever has made that assumption about you? If anything, people have been making comments about the guys on your season being out of your league (which is just as rude as she’s being here in my opinion). The comments she made about Thomas being a guy you f*** but not marry is so far away from being sex positive I can’t even. Finally, for someone who preaches to be woke, not being able to name any other countries in Africa and saying her fave movie is the Help is very telling. The WOC on Matt’s season did not like Katie and I am now seeing why…

Wow. This was harsh and can’t believe you’re on the internet leaving comments like this, as if anyone deserves to be spoken about this way.. She wasn’t saying the men on her season were shitty guys. She was meaning that if all the guys were Villains, she wouldn’t have had a problem eliminating everyone and that would have been a producer problem, not her. She even said later on how the men on her season were amazing and how she really tried to hear their stories.

I think it's definitely Greg who breaks her heart. They are showing her tell him that she has very strong feelings in a way I haven't seen before, so I think they are setting it up to show how devastated she is when he breaks up with her.

I don’t understand why nick is harping so much on Katie crying about a new contestant coming? Maybe she was just overwhelmed at the time and that is added stress.
I love what Katie said about having or not having kids, she articulated it so well and I think that’s a growing opinion amongst younger generations for sure
I've always found quotes like "everything happens for a reason" to be so out of touch with the reality of how much suffering goes on in the world at any given moment. I just can't imagine believing there is some sort of "fate" to my love story while children live in war zones, are dying from starvation, being abused and the neverending list goes on. I get the sentiment and why people hold onto thoughts like that but also wonder how they reconcile it in their minds.
It was very tone deaf and also normalizing trauma. Rape doesn't happen for a reason for the victim. People don't grow because of trauma, they grow inspite of it.
I agree it's very inappropriate. It's also something people literally only say when they're doing well in life and can see where their hardship has lead them to a better place.
I think Katie maybe isn’t good at communicating, I’m sure she has good intentions and what she says just comes out wrong. I’ve never given much thought to the world around us while using this phrase. I guess I’m self centred and to a degree a lot of us probably only think about our immediate surroundings. I often use the phrase as a way to not get incredibly angry when something horrible happens. Like my house being broken into etc. Being raised more holistic I always heard this, and believed that much like karma good will come when good is being done, and we can’t fight what happens to us to certain degree as long as we try out best. 🤷♀️ I can tell you one thing, I’m going to be thinking extra hard when I say that phrase again, so thanks for enlightening me to a degree.
That’s a really great point. I am guilty of saying this a lot, just as a coping mechanism when something in my life goes wrong, it helps to view it through those lens. But you’re right it’s very myopic and narrow considering the situation for most people.
I don’t think it’s tone deaf at all. That’s how some people view life as a more optimistic sort of outlook. Like I’m sorry your more pessimistic but saying it’s tone deaf is because your own views being like that. I’ve gone through some tough shit too but like hey once you get through it and do see the light at the end of the tunnel and realize if that terrible shit didn’t happen it wouldn’t have caused xyz to happen which led to the good and better outcome in the end, so at the end of the day it almost feels like things do happen for a reason. But it also depends on YOUR own attitude about life. If you want things to get better then you can eventually get there with the work and with the attitude and mindset. Yes there are people who’ve gone through terrible shit but look dude we’ve all been through some kind of shit in one way or another. So don’t shit on someone else’s out look or call it tone deaf especially if they’re reached a place of happiness through everything. Life is tough sometimes give it a break. I get what your saying but you have to remember you can’t carry the whole worlds tragedies and horrors on your back. Your never gonna be happy if you live thinking like that. I like Katie just fine but if the BACHELOR said what she said about wanting to go to the fantasy suite with Thomas he would be crucified - and rightfully so. Say that to your girlfriends in private. If Peter Webber (the worst) had said "yeah I really wanted to bang Victoria F so I kept her around then I finally realized I couldn't deal with her anymore" which we all know is TRUE he would have been sent off to an island - and I'm not talking about Paradise. I get that it's a TV show but I don't like that it is perfectly acceptable for Bachelorettes to objectify the men when that would never be ok in reverse.

After watching this I think Greg may be on to something. Katie’s was more interested in playing bachelorette games especially with the way she talked about keeping Thomas to take to fantasy suites whereas he was trying to think beyond. However i think he handled the situation poorly. She also comes across a bit mean girlish with her treatment of Thomas totally opposite of how she portrayed herself on Matt’s season which ultimately got her the Bachelorette role. Maybe she was not there for the right reasons which is why Thomas triggered her so much.
I think it's very clear that Katie is nervous. Not really sure why she is, but you can sense her nerves from a mile away.

don't like her. She is very immature asking the guys to tell each other on their back. She said she doesn't drama in the house but by asking the guys to tell each other is a way to create drama and she totally asked for it. She is a total hypocrite and very immature by letting Thomas go just because what she heard from other people. She is one of the worst bachelorette.
Idk if Katie was nervous but she seems stand off ish in this interview. I think she was answering the questions without thinking about her answer. Idk I do that sometimes when I’m nervous or meeting a new person.

1. Why does Nick keep pushing her about why she was emotional? She was going through a tricky time and had a bomb dropped on her; you're allowed to be emotional. wtf
2. I loooved Katie talking about not wanting kids. All of her reasons are the same as mine; I love my freedom, I don't want to add another person to this crappy world, I honestly don't want to be responsible for the life of another human and kids are expensive! The expectations society puts on women to have kids and then criticizes those who do....it's just nuts to me. If you like kids, go have your own; leave my uterus out of your conversation.
Thomas had no sincerity in his eyes, he implied the word "love" to Katie in the second week with no one-on-one, and people are hating on her for how he treated him? Guys, what he did was shitty and unnecessary and she was following her gut, he does not need 'justice'
do you have profs? it is so far hearsay. He was cornered by guys that ALL had the same thought of possibly become the next bachelor. That is rich! Thomas is no more or less looking for fame than any other guy looking for followers so they can stop working and gain $$ with the ads. Thomas is sure a sweet talker but I saw no prof that he is a villain.

@@sysanlots Thomas needed a wake up call and Katie has no obligation to coddle him and hold his hand through it. He was extremely rude and disrespectful to her as a person and to her intelligence. I believe Katie handled herself with dignity and grace, not to mention, the way he exited 100% had producer stamped all over it. The fact that Tayshia and Kaitlin gassed her up made it very well known that she wasn't keeping him so they clearly put her up to the dramatic exit. Again, Katie handled herself with class throughout. We're talking someone who is trying to invest in people and take her role as Bachelorette seriously. She wasn't there to babysit and help people like Thomas understand how his ego and narcissism can hurt others. Ugh.

Everyone who comes onto the show has the intentions of becoming the next lead. Even Tik Tok Katie, who basically auditioned for the role during Matt’s season and the women tell all. I see right through her.
ya i honestly liked her on matt’s season and i love her on ig but idk something rubs me a weird way... like duh everyone has those intentions if it doesn’t workout with the person. and she sure did. and thomas didn’t really act like an asshole for her to scold him like that. i’m all about women empowerment and standing up for yourself but girl there’s worse guys in the world. she’s kind of boring too, i was way too excited for her season!

Maybe she was going for Claire's "I don't want my children to have a father like you" moment and it just fell flat.
She also has major mean girl vibes (So ironic she chose that movie at the end) where she pretends to be super kind and nice then terrorizes the fat girl in gym class when nobody is watching.
I think Katie was so nervous and cried over the new arrival because she wanted to be open to her two specific guys in mind, but I think there was one guy she was already feeling so strongly for and was already in fear of it hurting that relationship. I think it was a testament to how strong her feelings were for one or more of the guys. Especially considering that she saw the effect it had on the women when Matt had new people join

Yikes in these comments! Everyone is so damn perfect and judgemental. We obviously didn't see everything that went down with her and Thomas. If she felt she was manipulated by him, then she is allowed to say that and warn another women. I appreciate her realness and that she doesn't try to say the perfect thing all of the time and isn't calculated in everything she says. I guess people would appreciate it if she was fake.

Just wanted to point out that the reference to trauma bonding in this episode @54:34 is incorrect. TB gets referred to so often lately and it's not about bonding over shared trauma, it's about one partner being abusive towards the other and creating a cyclical abusive relationship with reinforcement through rewards and punishment. I would assume that Nick's fond memories of his time with Vanessa, Rachel and Raven were not in relation to him abusing them.
I really liked Katie until this interview... I mean, all of the reasons so said she was on Matt's season qualify as "for the wrong reasons" and/or "not for love," she says she doesn't want to throw her ex under the bus and then calls him a "piece of shit," she dropped out of college... to work for banks (haha), she stood up for Trey even though he said, on the episode, that he told her about Thomas because he thought it would help him look good and get a rose (which it did, and is the same bs he was complaining about Thomas for doing; Trey is extremely manipulative too), she keeps saying she wasn't interested in Blake and sounds like she doesn't care but keeps him there which is disrespectful to him and to the other men, said she would keep Thomas just to f* around with him in the fantasy suits (just do this after the show if you dont find real love), laughed and cheered about having to be smart (appearance) rather than honest though ironically praises authenticity and wants men to be honest with her, doesn't want Thomas on bachelor in paradise where he could possibly find true love (selfish and cruel, doesn't matter if you two didn't match), is "too busy" to make an 8 min video and to mail it in but doesn't mind wasting her life on Tik Tok, etc. I mean wtf. Her insecurity also comes off like a joke and then she says Clare was closed off. NO, Clare found a person she felt a connection with and gave her entire heart to that man, which is absolute love and dedication. I wish more people did that. And because of her decision, which worked, Tayshia also found love. I'm 40min in and I'm really annoyed. She just keeps shitting on people and putting herself on a moral pedestal, while her true character is showing. At this point she doesn't seem ready for a relationship let alone marriage. Sex, sure! She's ready to f her way through the franchise, but idk about the rest. Oh that "scrawny Irish guy" with the big D that cant swim! She's 30?! She has a lot to learn about culture, spirituality, and connection if she wants to go to Thailand... but she only wants to go because its warm haha I'm freaking out at how horrible this is. Not expected. "Fuck everything, the world is going to shit." Oh man I really wish better for Greg, Michael, and the men that deserve it... outside of this program. The sexual assault thing is an even deeper issue considering the way she talks about sex. Get paid $

It really makes me sad. Almost everything she said in this interview showed a true lack of character. I’ve known people like Katie. They want to be seen as a defender of the little guy, or a morally upright person, but behind closed doors they are shitting on everyone. I hope this is not the case and just a bad day. I don’t want to cancel her. I guess it just shows to us viewers that we shouldn’t have much expectations for the contestants. They are just human, even though would try to have us believe they are more than that.
I wish we could get their reaction to every episode and things they're seeing for the first time. And honestly I'm glad there's finally a lead who isn't blinded by "love" and keeping around the "bad guys", I like watching someone who is assertive and confident and knows what they want. I think the worst leads are those who are very indecisive and unsure of themselves and what they want etc, for example Peter.

In defense of katie getting emotional to bringing a new guy on the show, matt admitted he got super nervous when his second batch of girls came onto the show as well. Its nervewracking to know the potential of a person even if u don’t know who that is, especially if youre the bachelorette/bachelor
I agree! I think Nick thought there was more to her and Blake before the show, sorta like him and Kaitlyn so he wasn’t buying her response. But I kind of agree with Nick, based off her response to Blake coming, it looked like they had more of a relationship before

Not fan of the table either.,. Maybe they did that because they're going to have more people in studio so for covid reasons it gives enough space in between the interview I don't know. But I felt like the other setup was much more cozier. Especially with a night shoot like this. He did this the same night he Recapped with Dave.

He knows how to read people and knows exactly what to say to make them feel good while simultaneously blowing smoke up their ass. Okay, so at 1:02:57 Katie somewhat dissed Greg. I don't think she would have said that if she had picked him in the end. She'd have A LOT of explaining to do after that, so I think it's safe to say she didn't pick Greg. Plus, I think she'd know how tall he was by now. 🤷
33:00 that was a refreshing viewpoint that Nick gave there. I don’t believe everything happens for a reason either. I think it’s one of those cookie cutter statements, that doesn’t hold true for many people. Think of people living in extreme poverty, hunger, with illnesses that make them feel like they are existing and trying to survive, moreso than actually living. Another example, a young mother losing her battle with Cancer, while her young children need her so much. That doesn’t happen for a reason, to me.

Really not getting good vibes from Katie here. I’ve liked her on the season but it seems like her role as Bachelorette has gone to her head. The way she said if it was any guy other than Blake or Dr Joe she would say ‘sorry bye’ came across as unnecessarily rude to me. Also, Katie says she was frustrated that the men all brought Thomas up but she incentivized them to do so by giving Tre a rose for speaking up and for repeatedly asking the guys to tell her if they don’t trust someone in the house…
Disappointed because I liked her on the season so far but her personality seems offputting here.
I get what youre saying and I thought this interview had some awkward moments, but I really think she just meant that she wouldnt allow a guy to come on midseason if she didnt they could really have something for fear it would jeopardize the other relationships, and the only two people she thought could be a match com Clayshias season were Blake and Joe. I think it's fine to say that. She's not disrespecting the guys, she's just acknowledging theyre not her type

I honestly feel the same way. I really like Katie. However, this interview put a bad taste in my mouth. Listening to and and seeing how she carried herself, stressed me out. It was very surface level, sometimes rude and seemed disingenuous. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, and that maybe she was just having a stressed out and off day. No one is perfect, but I hope she doesn’t put herself on too much of a pedestal.

on my way home to watch the Bachelorette and was kind of disappointed in some of the answers Katie gave. I like her a lot and was so touched by her story, love her personality and emotional intelligence but this seemed a little off. Idk if she was nervous or what but I agree with some of these comments. Seemed a little surface level, egotistical and a little immature. I’ll circle back to say that this was slowly climbing it’s way to becoming one of my top 3 favorite seasons (Rachel Lindsay is #1, Taysha #2). I’m gonna keep watching because she really is doing an outstanding job as a bachelorette and I will say that this interview had great moments, it wasn’t the most favorable in terms of humility

He liked her but he didn't want marriage. It was clear in his hesitation. I think he is so nice that he didnt want to embarrass her. She is soooooo full of herself, it stinks. @x x No, if you watched the seasons he was on, you'd KNOW that was false, beyond a shadow of a doubt! Nick PROPOSED to Andi on the season (the first one) he was on.
The man was legitimately heart-broken when she didn't choose him, and the very horrible thing he said afterwards, at the "After the Final Rose" was- "Why did you MAKE love to me if you did not love me?"
Trust me, it was bad.
He didn't have a single smidgen of him that wanted to be the Bachelor at that point, or else he wouldn't have said that and villainized himself.
Nick has since apologized over and over for what he said because it was gross and he didn't realize even a tiny percentage of the slut shaming Andi would get from him saying she'd had sex with him, and Bachelor Nation was MUCH more conservative back then, to where a MAN having sex in the fantasy suite was okay, but a woman doing it was not. It made no sense.
A similar thing happened with Kaitlyn Bristowe, and even to this day him and Shawn Booth don't speak because of their feud over Kaitlyn.
But he 100% went onto Bachelor in Paradise to hopefully be the Bachelor

I feel this interview gives us some insight into the breakup of her engagement- the communication style differences between her and Blake. Also, Blake is much more laid back and chill. She seems very insecure and self-righteous at the same time. A distasteful mix. I teach high school students that act similarly and they are 15 years younger. Maybe it is her emotional immaturity?
I do think they were waaaaaay to harsh on Thomas. Katie too.
