In August 2021, the Taliban rapidly gained control of Kabul and much of the country, leading to the collapse of the Afghan government. The U.S. and its allies withdrew their troops from Afghanistan, ending nearly 20 years of military involvement in the country.
The Taliban's return to power raised concerns about the country's security and stability, given their past association with terrorism and strict interpretation of Islamic law. Questions were also raised about the protection of human rights, especially for women and minorities.
