I've just been noticing all these comments, figured I'd throw in my two cents. This whole sync vs. none sync thing is pretty funny. Yes it all comes down to is the dance floor jumping or not. BUUTTT Imo if you're gonna make that happen you've got to learn the skills of a scratch/beatmatching dj so you can keep the energy alive and "wow" the crowd with creative live transitions and mashups.
The first part, "put your hands up' is a sample of the lil jon remix of LMFAO's Shots. Not digging the music selection. All a bunch of 128bpm ish. Nice scratch work, but programming is everything.
You are going to love the answer... this is how most current dj's do it. the platters have a code on them that is understood by a program on the computer... so you can put anyyyy digital music on the platter within seconds. so you can change song just for a quick scratch before switching songs. or even run 4 or 6 decks with one or two platters
SL1 is no longer offered by Rane. Your lowest option, through Rane, is going to be an SL2. Difference being the number of inputs allowed on the device. The number representing the number of decks you can plug in, I believe. (Typing without Googling here, people). Traktor is another option if you're looking to be a little less costly. Controllers are usually less expensive and the program is just as solid (now) as Serato - although not as widely used in North America.
It's clear that we both have different beliefs in what makes a person a real DJ. I feel the definition of a DJ is becoming more and more diluted. We have these producers on stage throwing down sets with two laptops, ableton, and a mixer, and they are being called DJs. When they can't beatmatch by ear for the life of them. To me, beatmatching is the foundation of DJing. One must have the ability to throw down a set on vinyl w/o BPMs and syncs to be considered a DJ in my book.
That is an interesting, and often used excuse, to defend why one uses the sync button. "Why waste time".. "could be doing other things".. really?? what other things are you going to get done in the few moments it takes to beatmatch. It seems to me that those who use the sync button are those who MUST use the sync button because it apparently takes them a long time to beatmatch manually. The record is over before you can beatmatch.. which further supports the fact that they aren't real DJs.
Now you say that but those are two totally different things. It is impossible to have a computer scratch a record like a human cause there are so many different techniques and ways to do it, so many different sounds and speeds. Beatmatching, only one thing happens, theres no difference in speed or sound so why waist the time? i know how to beatmatch, i actually started out doing it but i realized "Why waist the time when i could be doing other things?"
This goes back to a previous comment I made.. If one could hit a button that makes a scratching effect.. vs physically manipulating a record to make the scratching effect, would you call the person who hit the button a turntablist? I don't think you can because they don't possess the technical skills required to scratch.. similarly, I wouldn't call someone a DJ who uses a sync button because they don't possess the skill to beatmatch manually. If they did, then they would do it manually.
I'd say it's great that you are rocking a crowd. I never dispute that people hitting sync are incapable of rocking crowds. I'm saying they shouldn't be called DJs if they are incapable of DJing without software telling them the BPMs are matched. Just like you wouldn't call a person a turntablist if they weren't physically manipulating the track while it's playing (i.e.. hitting a button that overlays some scratching effect--not sure if this exists.. yet)
No, that is not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying they lack the skill to beatmatch without software. Beatmatching, in my opinion, is at the foundation of DJing. Look, if software came out that made it sound like one was scratching, would you consider them a turntablist? No, because they aren't physically scratching. If they aren't physically beatmatching, how can they be called a DJ? Aside from track selections and rocking crowds.. they are unable to beatmatch without software.
Just reading your post is so disappointing to me. These new DJs are crippled by BPMs on the screen and sync buttons. I suppose the thing that makes me bitter is that the "new generation" tries to label themselves as a DJ, when they didn't put in the work like all of us did before serato. I agree that they can rock a crowd but disagree with calling them a DJ. Unfortunately, a jukebox is the only thing I believe they are unless they are displaying some other skill beyond track selection.
i think thats serato scratch that is doing the beatmatching :) it also has a option to make the beats line up and it makes the track continue where it should have been if you never done anything when you scratch. still a good mix tho
I'm not denying that the dude has technical skills, he is really good in that sense. It's just that his selections are terrible. Why doesn't he put his skills to better use? I guess its simply because clubs will pay alright money for those who play top40 shit to keep the kids happy. Also, I wouldn't call this hip-hop, it's just mainstream club gash.
Allow me to explain. I can beatmatch adequately. It's really not that difficult. Thing is, in my live sets I still use sync anyway because I like to use hotcues, effects, and Ableton Live for some fun stuff. If I had to beatmatch every time I wanted to hotcue to a different place then I wouldn't be able to do anywhere near much technical stuff as I do.
Can you tell me, what does hitting the sync button and manually beat matching make the beat do differently? One takes a bit of time and the other is instant, other then that nothing. So how about you get over the fact that you took the time to learn how to get a round a forest when there is a trail going straight through the middle.
Ok so you learn the technical skills right, so what happens then if you are doing your technical stuff and I'm just pushing buttons, but I keep the crowd jumping better than you. What does that say. Learn to move on into the future. Stop being stuck in da past and stop hating. You should critisize the man if the mix sucked, not how the mix was done.
Perhaps... although I've never heard old audio engineers complain. But your point is taken. There is certainly a defining line in "what is a dj" but that line is subjective. It seems that we differ in where that line is drawn, and I don't think there will be any re-drawing of lines between us. To me, physical beatmatching is a requirement. To many others, it isn't.
If it wasn't difficult, then everybody would do it. And you're right, the party-goers don't care if you beatmatch manually or not.. but those of us who actually learned the technical skills of DJing know who the real DJs are... those who hit the sync button are nothing more than a Jukebox DJ. At least a jukebox doesn't front like it is a "Real DJ".
It's ok if you beatmatch, BUT you have to be able to overtake the set of the dj that played before you. Syncing doesn't work that well anyways. ANd you play for the people dancing, if the people don't dance to your tunes nobody cares if your able to beatmatch or not.
LOL hilarious. This stuff is NOT hip hop. Honestly, its closer to "that house, electro n techno shit most djs be playin" Knowledge, the 1 element of hip hop that a shit load of people do not have.
(can't link a video here) One of the many video's around explaining how to use vinyl with dj software. Serrato, Traktor is what you are looking for (not cheap). I suggest you google FAQ about it and Q&A And do a search on tutorials in youtube.
People dislike sync because it came out on cheaper products first. DJ's had invested 1000's in gear gear then numark released 250$ controllers with sync. Guarantee you if Pioneer bought out sync first everyone would love it (great mix btw dude)
kid makes a solid mix in a program that does not even include a sync option, and all I see is bullshit hater nonsense from dudes with NO VIDEOS on their channel. its no dj am shit but if i saw this out at the bar itd be better than 80% of the slop i see

epic mix guy! . . question, when ur dropping ur tracks, i noticed that u really don't even touch ur pitch controls. does that mean ur running all ur tracks at the same bpm? cuz ur timing on dropping beats is awesome
If you first learn to read then i will be able to have a proper discussion with you. I say i don't have the time to do it, ofcourse i can, it's like shifting gears it's seams difficult at first but appears to be easy as fuck.
I like how people say its a "simple mix" Id bet that is because it is a Top 40 or mainstream genre mix. Id also like to bet that most can not cut like the guy in the above video. Solid mix man!
on serato live there is not that i know about? in the serato itch there might, but hes using serato live not itch... some ppl just like to talk about others with out looking up some info....
Good Job young blood, but respect your craft...Get some 1200's and a high end Mixer up in there. It's like being rich and driving a Ford Pinto what's the point. It's only money!!!!
@toutoune06450 how can you say not a deejay i dont use headpone's cuz i count bars that is a real deejay you just not as nice as you think think about what you say be for you say it!!!!!!
I like the controlability over the 57 but the mixer isn't the same quality. If wasn't already getting a rage 62 I'd throw an inno fader in this thing and call it a day!
sweet, i like the mix of all the different songs, he went from LMFAO to drake props to that and its also a setup without a sync button which just speaks for itself
He does not change the records during this mix. Are the TTX-s connected to the computer and is he using them as a controller for Traktor DJ or something? I don't understand.
All this is saying is the new DJs as you call is smarter than you. They didn't have to put in all the work you had to and still do a mix better an quicker than you.
Thanks for the answer, but can You be more precise? I'm really considering buying a TTX (in addition to my CDX-s), but I need to know how it actually works.
Better than that house, electro n techno shit most djs be playin, they all have the same beat... hip hop is like the hardest genre to mix.. from what ive heard
my guess,, Serato scratch Live, 2x Numark ttx turntables, denon dn-x120 mixer, denon dn-hc1000 (s) midicontroller.. thats about it oh and a laptop/macbook
QUESTION, are all the songs you played engraved on the records or did you somehow connect them to the computer so you could play different songs? just wonderin
How did you get Ni***s in Paris to get to 130 bpm to match Yeah3x without using the pitch fader, and how did you bring back up to speed like you did to Rack City?
I had the dennon, it was a beast with serato, but i have since switched to traktor and the PIONEER DJM T1, which basically has one built in it. I love it
Two Numark TTX turntables, A Denon DN-X120 mixer, A Rane SL1 soundcard to make everything compatible with the laptop software "Serato" and I'm not so sure about the FX thing on top of the mixer, But It's a Denon product as well.
Nice man... But i have a question is wanna start DJing/scrachting but i don't know what equipment i need. Do i just need a turntable a mixer and some records or do i need more.... can someone please help me out
what happened no sound lol
No sound
Copy rights ugh
....there isn't a sync button in sight my friend

that sl1 box is worth more than the cheap ass numark tables and the even cheaper denon mixer wth get you some sl 1200s playboy than come talk

Do yourself a favor and don't watch the "Lady Sovereign Boyfriend 2012" video response. You'll hate your life for wasting your time and bandwidth.
I had the dennon, it was a beast with serato, but i have since switched to traktor and the PIONEER DJM T1, which basically has one built in it. I love it
Man I looked like an idiot in the library just putting my hands up in the air. That's the last time I do what lil jon tells me to do
I was raging to my pc's soundboard... And it was a MUTE video ahahah
What do you mean?... it was first playin jay zs song then he brought in rack city in a slow tempo, then it speed up to its regular tempo, no remix
whats is the different between the sl1 and sl4 ?
is there any other solution the sl4 is very expensive
is there any other brand ?
thanks
i have the same turntables and was wondering if u had any probs cuz on e of mine idk y it doesnt read wit a needle only use it in int. mode
This guy is great!
Completely differetn way to mix (not beat mixing) AWESOME!
yes, that's the way most dj's work, the TTX's are controllers, the records are time-coded. So you scratch the MP3, not the record ;-)
some of the scratches don't look on time because he was monitoring that track through his headphones, if your a dj you should know that
I can perfectly match the beat's and i use the sync button, why? Cause when i'm using 4 deck's i sometimes don't have the time to do it.
Serato Scratch Live does NOT have an auto beatmatching and does NOT have a feature to return to the spot when scratching.
Do i just need a turntable a mixer and some records or do i need more....
can someone please help me out
That is fucking easy as hell, just import the image, lay down some keyframes, and let the editing application do the rest xD

2x Numark TTX ~800 USD
