- I finally tackled the starter replacement on my 2007 S550 Mercedes S550. I began the process while under the weather. But due to health reasons, I had to take about a week off.
The process isn't too bad. It helps to have as much clearance as possible. A lift would definitely be advantageous. Once the job was complete, and I began to drive my car again.....I instantly fell back in love with it. The S550 is a fabulous car.
So keep in mind this diagnosis and process when your car is showing similar symptoms. Check your batteries, relay and starter.
Too much talking to unrelated issue. Remove the starter and forget about the nonsense stuff. Come on man!

Thank you, Sir! If you can do it on your back in a driveway, I can do it on my back in a driveway. I was SHOCKED at the difficulty in swapping out the motor mounts in my S550. It's good to know that the starter will be much easier. I appreciate the tutorial.

What was your symptoms mines wont start no crank no click nothing
It was a gradual death. Every so often, it would start but was slow or struggling. Then finally one day, it struggled and wouldn’t finish. The more I tried, the less it would turn over. Until there was just a single click. Same symptoms of a dead battery. So I knew it wasn’t the relay. In your case…..check starter relay and fuses.
How did you know it was the starter? My 09’ s550 stopped and won’t take a boost off. I still had all electrical but it wouldn’t try to crank 😢
Similar issues. One day, it just wouldn’t fully crank. It was a slow die. Tried to start but was very slow. Each time I tried to crank it, it got slower and slower until it stopped trying.

So I got to ask the question. Last year I had my starter replaced. Recently the car started driving bad. Then it was really hard to start. While driving the car the other day it stalled in the middle of the street. I was able to restart the car. When I got home and turned it off and it would crank as if it wanted to turn over but didn’t. After several attempts there was no even cranking. Now the car is stuck on my driveway and I ordered an alternator cause it was determined by the Mercedes star c4 computer. With all this said I watched your video about the starter and another guy’s video for alternator. On scale of 1-10 how hard is this starter replacement? The alternator replacement seems like a 4-5.

It’s about. 5-7 depending on your mechanical aptitude. It’s just a tight fit. Requires patience.

I have looked at WIS the Mercedes workshop manual, it says nothing about the sway bar, but it does say remove the steering coupling, which is a pain in the nuts.
Apart from that, they say just about the same as you.
Good old Mercedes Benz, if they can make a job awkward, they will make it twice as awkward, if they cant make a job awkward, they will make it impossible.
Try replacing a steering rack on a W220, that brings a whole new meaning to the word idiotic!
BTW the silver thing IS the solenoid, its just a big magnet that moves the drive cog onto the flywheel and turns the motor on, If your starter doesn't work, you can (Carefully) put a jump lead to the big terminal nearest the motor, if it spins, the solenoid is faulty, if it doesn't, its the motor (there are firms that will recondition the solenoid).
One last thing, the terminal that you push on, if you supply 12v to it, and the starter bursts into life, its probably the starter relay, under the bonnet (Hood) on a w220.

You get to know these cars and understand them……from a technical perspective. And like you said, Mercedes knows very well how to complicate a design. But it’s done with logic. And of course, financial gain for them.
