  • Like hundreds of other young Cuban baseball players, Roberto Hernández left his country in pursuit of the “American dream.”
Roberto signed a $320,000 deal with an MLB team and soon was blowing away batters in the Dominican Summer League with a 94 mph fastball and a wicked slider.
But money and professional success didn’t bring him happiness, and Robert made a surprising decision - to return to Cuba.

Thank you for this story. My mother was trafficked out of Cuba in the early 1960s and placed in the Black American community in Cleveland Ohio, because of this, she did not know of her Cuban heritage. In recent years we have been learning about her past. Thanks to my mother's head Orisha and ancestors we have found our roots, and hope to find family 👪 🙏 in Cuba 🇨🇺. By the way, my mother's head orisha is Elegua because her name is Alawana, a name not used in the Black American community in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Thank you Belly of the Beast for all the work you all do. God bless everyone 🙏 ❤️

I'm Cuban and also a huge baseball fan. Nothing makes me happier than Cubans making their way to MLB where they'll make the most of their talent and potential. However, some people don't find happiness in going that far. Some are happy with staying home with their families through thick and thin. So I totally respect his decision to stay, and even admire it cause of how honest with himself he was. However, I do feel sorry about the decay of Cuban baseball and the fact that players live in poor conditions. I wish it was different

I was born in Cuba and I am in my late thirties to give some perspective. I have no issues with him going back, I wish he had given it a chance. He signed as an international free agent at 16 years old, I was 13 when I came here, and that age is very hard for anyone. He had a good first year in rookie league, returned to Cuba and his last 3 seasons has not pitched more than 21 innings, 10 innings in the past 2 with an over 10.0 ERA average. Cuba is famous for destroying pitchers arms when you are good, and sending you oversees to Japan, Mexico and other countries so you can bring profit back. Not sure how gifted he would have been, but the treatment of baseball players in Cuba it’s not even close to being the same and you are invisible once you are done or you retire.

I wouldn’t say robbed but a lot of times players for a opportunity have to sign these pretty abysmal contracts at first but obviously the longer he played and them seeing the talent he possessed deals would become more lucrative
