Here in the states we use a dead flat called CHB from SW and spot prime with it as well. Normally one coat and done unless ceiling is colored or if it has a sheen. The 123 leaves a sheen and almost guarantees a second coat.
Up in Canada Cloverdale paint makes a specific ceiling paint, have had excellent results with it over the years on flat ceilings. I agree that 123 leaves a sheen, noticeable on large open spaces. I use drywall sealer, half toned to the paint, if possible. I wipe down before painting too,,, one of 'those' guys. Just takes a few minutes, ceilings not so much, but you can sure tell walls that were not wiped before paint.

I carry a few different chalk colours to mix into the mud, and have never had any of them bleed through. (don't ask about using food colouring though, that was a disaster) Yellow was the hardest to find, I ended finding some for a Japanese chalk line. I like having a few colours so if I'm doing multiple passes through a room, I can differentiate what has already been sanded versus what is more recent.
I have seen a previous video where you use a vacuum attachment with a brush to suck up any dust in the corners on the walls, etc. that’s what I would do

I usually find I need 2 or 3 rounds of patching on the ceiling, the priming particularly shows all the small defects you didnt notice the first time around.
I like 1-2-3 because it covers just about any material--wood, stucco, metal, most plastics, etc. You can top coat it with just about anything too. Good stuff.
Thanks for the tips. Chalk colors Red has an oil base and will absolutely show through paint and even acryllic based stucco finishes. Avoid it on finished surfaces. It will bleed through. Personal experience had to reskim basecoat and refinish an emtire store front due to red chalk used by signage people. Blue generally wont show through but can depending on your finish product. Purple is less staining and easier to clean up than blue and red off many surfaces. The least staining color is white chalk although it has a few very specific uses. The primary one that I have seen is laying out wall locations on concrete floors. It shows up great but not long lasting.
Use a duster. We use a swifter on walls and ceilings. Dust make terrible finish. Also don’t roll over cutouts. Roll around tight. Dirt comes off the holes when you roll right over top. Cheers
When doing my prime check I use a pencil taped to a long paint stick to mark problem areas instead of tape.Saves trips up and down a ladder.(writing pencil,not a carpenter's pencil and a light touch)
For best practice for a diyer,, would it be best to prime everything ?? It's been 20 plus years since painted. Yes, I'm going to do a light sand and wash with TSP. THANKS

I don't actually. I know a lot of people who swear by that method but you will find just as many who don't. I'm one of the don't. I would if it was super dusty. It's just a quick brush.
sorry for asking, but first you use 150 grit to smooth the drywall fillings, then you go for 100 grit in the corners and finish with 120 grit for the entire ceiling. I this the correct order? Aren't you scratching the wall??? Great vid anyway!! Great job!

Great video, thank you. I used Bin123 to spot prime my ceiling and the primer actually flashed through the finish paint. What recommendations would you have to prevent that from happening? (I ultimately had to re prime the whole ceiling then when I laid the finish it all covered without flashing - but that was a real pain)
Hi Ben...no need to wipe down after last sanding? I've read people using a damp cloth or tack rag. I just skim coated my reno and plan on using drywall primer/sealer and want to do it right. After finish sanding should I wipe down walls before drywall primer/sealer? Thanks man
You could use it, but any of the quick set stuff has hardeners that allow it to set so quickly. They don't sand down as nice, or leave as nice a finish as a light mud.
Hi Tom; in my case I used the Zinsser because it seals all; drywall and old oil paint. If you paint a surface that's in an older place, and you don't know what paint was used before, it's best to use a sealer like this. We have a house that was never primed. They just painted it and it never stopped absorbing paint unevenly (mud in some areas, oil paint in others and in some spots lifting because oil was used. Zinsser stopped all that.
Love your videos and explanations. I have a textured ceiling with a roof like pitch in the middle. Also cracks running lengthwise where the 2 pitch meets if that makes sense. How can I fix those cracks without scraping the entire ceiling? Thanks and cheers from Pitt Meadows BC.
If it is how I am picturing it I believe latex caulking would fix the problem.Latex caulking tends to shrink a bit so I would do 2 coats at least 8 hours apart.
It is unless you are using patch with primer, but even then they need two coats over them or they will flash through because the millage isn’t thick enough.
Why take everything off from the ceiling!?...just cut around it. Your working more by taking everything off and then putting back on. Use presto patch for hole sit dries within minutes instead of drywall mud....tour doing to much son 🤦🏻♂️

I've found chb is to flashy. It tends to be almost a powder. Promar 400 to me is a great ceiling paint. But chb for the price isn't bad.

It's because blue is used as an optical brightener in white. Almost all whites have a blue tint in them.
If you sand before you start to fill it helps in identifying any imperfections on the substrate.

Hi, you used three different grits in this video. Shouldn't I use grits in the order. Is it ok to sand corners with 120 or 150. Please guide.
Your video didn't dicuss the sanding dust. What did you do with that? you don't go rite to paint do you? Do you just point the blower at the ceiling?

I only brush off dust if there is a lot of it. Mostly just the corners.

I applied a high-quality primer after removing the popcorn, and THEN painted. Been in the home 5 years and it still looks great.
Do you ever wash the walls/ceiling with TSP prior to painting?
It is my experience that if you don't wash it first you will have a mess when you paint it.

Ben, try not to push the paint out of the roller to avoid reloading. Once you try a light touch on the fully loaded roller, you'll love the finish.

Here in Canada we sometimes have textured ceilings but always flat walls.
Over kill. Use a ultra flat ceiling paint and lay it off right and you won’t have any issues......
