    That clip you removed on the door card using some putty on the back of a screw driver is genius. You should make that into a little clip and upload it separately with all the other tricks you do. That’ll get some deserved traffic on your channel 👍🏻

    I have a 2012 Jaguar XF I followed all his instructions according to putting ambient light throughout my Jag. I have Ice Blue ambient lights on all four doors now. ambient lights on my console and dashboard. also i have dark blue lights on the front/rear floors as he demostrated. I also have lights in my rear A/C unit like his. the only way to put ambient lights to the rear doors, is you have to go through the rubber part of the door and run your wires through the seat belt panel on to the floor. i bedded my transmitter through my speakers and tape the access ambient light to the back of the door panel. now my whole care is completed!!! HAPPY ME!

    It looked alright the first time you did it at the driver’s door, was afraid you might still see the imperfections in the lines and that someone would’ve known it was an aftermarket fitment. But then you tucked it behind the wood and it looks amazing! Looks stock and no one would’ve known it didn’t leave the factory like that. Might give my car the same makeover if your rear door lightings look this good too. And don’t forget the night shots when you’re done 😉

    Ambient lighting this way works, love it, I never did understand why the rear doors aren't lit as well and I prefer the full length install. Advice ; watch some videos on wrapping, wrap the covers off of the car, you should find it easier, if you wanted to just keep gloss black see if you can get an ordinary cover from ebay to practice on, if it does not work you then have then have the option of rattle can spraying. Hope this helps

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Anthony. Yeah, I tried wrapping yesterday and wasted a whole to of 3M vinyl. It was a total flop. All the videos I watched showed various techniques and I tried them all, but the inner corner by the window kept catching me out. I couldn't get the wrinkles out there. I might give it another go but if it doesn't work I'll just buy a set of used black covers in eBay 😜

    • @anthonybushell102
      @anthonybushell102 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carfanfan The mirror covers need to be wrapped in two pieces, virtually impossible in one. You don't need to wait for black covers, any colour will do then spray them. It would be important to build up the layers slowly, then place them somewhere warm to cook for a week before fitting. Simoniz tough paint (available on eBay) is chip resistant, comes in black satin or gloss, and would be perfect for mirror covers, I’ve used this paint on my motorbike and it does what it says on the tin. Del boy from Del Boy's garage on YT introduced me to this paint, now there is no looking back. Hope this helps 😊😊

    I fitted EL string lighting to my door cards, behind the wooden trim as you have because I loved the glowing look, unfortunately mine does not shine out as well and I wondered why. I have figured it out, so I thought I'd share with your audience who may be wanting to try this themselves. My interior is black, consequently does not reflect the light that well. I’ve now ordered the same type of lighting you’ve used, with the lip, I’ll run the bead along the top of the timber insert and see how that pans out, I’ll post an update soon

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing Anthony. Unfortunately, a black interior will absorb a bit of light, but it shouldn't be to the point where you can barely see it. The EL lighting with the band is the best type to use as it is a bit brighter thanks to the AC converter and can be slotted into any area in a car's interior without fuss. Mine is sitting just behind the top of the wood trim so it has pushed the wood trim forward slightly to create its own space and the light reflects upwards. The import part is to ensure the band goes in first, then use a trim tool to push the EL light just behind the wood trim's lip. If the light goes behind that lip, you won't see much at all really.

    Finally managed to install one door, and to be honest putting the door back on specially windows side was such a pain :(. Secondly, I put lights exactly where u've pinched them in, but they are not visible at all if you're sitting on driving seat, only way to see them is to look well below the door else the lights are not visible at all.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well done - in order to resolve that, pull the EL wire out from behind the wood trim and try again. It sounds like to tucked it too deeply in. Tuck it in so that the EL wire itself is just barely visible so that it creates a hue of light from behind the wood trim and shines up against the top portion of the door card.

    Hi Hilton. A very impressive video. The new lighting looks well. I would have been worried by all the creaking lol :-)) I look forward to seeing the back doors being done. I just read that Jaguar is going fully electric. I wonder what that will mean for their car design in the years ahead. :-/

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andy. Thanks for watching. I'm excited to get the project complete to get the overall effect. Jaguar going full electric could be a gamble as Tesla has already established themselves as the premium electric brand, but I guess they all want a slice of that cake now. People who prefer more conventional cars might look elsewhere instead. Electric cars doesn't make sense in all countries especially South Africa where generating electricity is a challenge. We have solar on our house because of the constant power cuts. The government owns the company that generates electricity and won't let independents enter the market so it's a certainty that we will have power cuts for the rest of time.

    • @AndrewKNI
      @AndrewKNI 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carfanfan Hi H. We are to lose buying brand new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 in the UK if all goes to the green agenda. However, in my lifetime I doubt I will have to buy electric. There still will be plenty of used cars for us 'petrol heads' for many years to come. Electric cars are quite a bit more expensive, and the charging infrastructure is not good enough, so that would need to change for wider appeal. Solar power sounds interesting and provides some certainty for your power supply. Some houses have solar panels here but generally its more for heating water than the whole house, although that can be done too. I know Jaguar have said they are going electric but if the competition doesn't go full electric, they will have a problem. BMW and Mercedes seem to be going plug-in electric plus petrol or diesel engines. Such hybrids might be a better bet but not as good looking as your XFR.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewKNI LoL - yes Andy, the XFR and others like it will soon be extinct relics only ever seen in magazines (probably on-line magazines as paper will most likely be done away with too :D). That's why I'm relishing this car as much as I can. Each time I start it to go somewhere, I just sit and listen to the V8 burble for a minute or so to take it all in. The smell of petrol, the engine vibrating under the bonnet and the car feeling like it has a life of its own. Electric cars have no soul to them. I wish I could keep this XFR for as long as I live, but the older it gets, the more expensive it will become to maintain it since the parts all come from the UK and at some point, they'll stop supporting these cars with parts. Salvage yards will hike parts prices and it will become uneconomical financially to hang on to it. I reckon this XFR of mine will end up being crushed 10 years from now. Sad, but I will have to move on at some point to something else. Stay safe my friend.

    • @AndrewKNI
      @AndrewKNI 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carfanfan Just drive on as long as you can and enjoy the ambience. That V8 has plenty of life in it. We have a small but growing number of electric cars here, such as the Nissan Leaf, but I doubt full conversion to electric for everyone is feasible or affordable. Even our power supplies would suffer great strain! It is well recognised that the best environmental thing to do is drive on in your old car, and when changing buy secondhand....recycling lol :-) To me, driving an electric car is akin to having just another appliance, like a fridge. Important perhaps but not very exciting lol :-) Have a good day :-)

    Hi, thank you for putting this video up. I have a question though! Did you Jag have the door courtesy light under the door card? I have a 2016 XF Sport which doesn't have it on the front or rear doors but it's something I want to get fitted. I've tried looking for a video but can not find any. Can you help?
    Thanks 😊

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately XF never had the courtesy light under the door car. However, like I've done here running a wire from the interior ambient lighting in the door, you could retro-fit one of those logo pop-in lights at the bottom of the door card and hook the wires up to the ambient lighting in the door card. Those lights usually come on every time you open the door after unlocking the car.

  • @Malejie
    @Malejie ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid Hilton... I am also going to be adding ambient lighting to my X250. Will be using your videos as guidance. With regards to the rear doors, have you found a power source for the EL wire?

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, mate. Yes, you have to run wires through the rubber grommets between the body and the door and link your power to the dome light wiring. That way, it will also dim when you dim the interior lights.

    • @Malejie
      @Malejie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carfanfan Ahhh ok great, thanks for that, much appreciated. Cant wait to tackle this project. The dome light power, that is the white & blue wire you mentioned, correct? So I bridge power from there & run the wire through the vehicle the get power to the back doors?

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Malejie that's correct. Once you have the wire in the door you can then hook a black wire for your ground up to a ground wire in your door wires. You will need a tester to find the ground wire. I would use the ground for the window switch wires.

    • @Malejie
      @Malejie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carfanfan With regards to the wiring loom you put together to make for an easier installation, which size wire did you use? As I cannot find the same size (22awg as stamped on the EL wire connectors) wire that is initially used with the EL wire. All the shops I went to, has bigger sizes & not the small size that comes with the EL wire. So which size wiring would you recommend I use for my extension loom?

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can find a 16 gauge then that will work perfectly. The higher you go, the thinner the wire. The thinner the wire, the more prone it will be to fire, but the thicker you go, the less power it will be able to carry for 12v. So 16 gauge is the best inbetweener.

      @carfanfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there. You can hook up a wire to the wire that feeds light to the center buttons just under the screen, but having done that myself, I found that the ambient lights were dimmer. The reason being that when you switch the headlights on the screen dims as not to blind you at night. The dome light is really the best place to run your live wire from. Having made a "main" loom from that wire together with the ground wire in the door jam, I'm able to now hook ambient lights anywhere in the car. I'm releasing a new video this Friday on extending the ambient light into the rear air vents for rear passengers to enjoy ;)

    Hi Hilton, Not sure if you around. I did put lights on front 2 x doors the left one is perfect, when I installed the right one as soon I'm switching lights on Ambient lights do come on but I hear non stop beep. And beep goes away as soon lights/ambient is switch off. And this beep only comes from driving side door. Last ambient light on driving side stopped working after 2 days, thought that beep could be faulty ambient/convert, but today I've in stalled new one and it's doing same (beeeeeeeeeeeeeep). Now sure why?

      Hey there. That's very odd. Isnthe beeping coming from the converter or the car?

      @@carfanfan not sure I need to take panel off to see where it is coming from, could be converter but need to check

      @@carfanfan I did further testing today, so yes the very light beep sound comes from black converter thing. I'f put it next to ear and adjusted the intensity of light from car control. Lower = v less beep, higher = louder beep, this beep is just so annoying as u can hear it if u parked at home with no radio

      @@adios2952 it's normal for the converter to make a humming sound, not beeping. It's converting DC to AC so you will definitely hear a slight hum coming from the box. But I've never had any that beep. Very odd that. If it's humming and your engine is off, pretend it's the car being awake for you. Most modern cars have noises coming from the engine bat the moment you open the door to let you know it's priming the brakes, oil pum and fuel pump.

    How to transfer the light from one door to another, I have only one adapter.?

    • @carfanfan

      Simply use the ambient light wires in each door and tap into those wires.

    Do you know how you can remove the chrome window trims?

    • @carfanfan

      They can be removed, but it's not something I'd attempt. They have hidden screws that hold them in place just behind the door trim and if you don't get them all off, you could bend and break the chrome strips easily. The piece under the side mirrors is separate from the door chrome and requires the mirrors to be removed entirely.
