Featuring. . . the return of the never-ending plugs for "Fluffy"!
What's My Line? I wonder if "The Sound of Music" ever got plugged on G-T programs in early 1965. The way it got plugged on G-T programs, you would think "Fluffy" was the Lawrence of Arabia of 1965.
What's My Line? After the first three plugs for "Fluffy" on WML, the word is in my mind, forever associated with Tony Randall. Every time I've heard that word since, Tony's face has kept on popping up in my head. ;)

RIP Carol Channing
The Orthodox Presbyterian Minister seems really smitten with Carol Channing.
Two weeks earlier, Carol Channing disrupted a Feb 1965 WML episode, starting with her infamously long introduction of ever-lovin' Arlene Francis. She is wearing here the exact same pant suit ensemble that Bennett Cerf referred to in his introduction of Carol in that February 1965 WML episode as "the damnest outfit." "Damnest" rarely got used as an adjective on Sunday Night WML. Well, it was -- but only by the standards of WML where Dorothy wore empire waists and Arlene got gowned by Bonwit-Teller.

One of the earliest announcing jobs on a G-T game show by Gene Wood, who would later become their #1 announcer alongside Johnny Olson in the 70s and 80s on "Card Sharks" and "Family Feud" among others (as well as a stint hosting the syndicated revival of "Beat The Clock" from 1972-74).
epaddon Is it me or did Gene kind of flub the name of the musical Carol starred in as "Dolly" instead of "Hello, Dolly"?
It would be darned interesting to know why it is that G-T preserved "What's My Line?" in kinescope and "Password" in videotape, including color videotape in 1966 and 1967.
+MattTheSaiyan This is only speculation on my part, but I think it has to do with the fact that after initially *not* saving copies of both shows, G-T later had second thoughts and by that point, ABC had wiped their copies of Password, but CBS still had copies of NYSI. In fact, CBS was surprisingly good at preserving their 70s game shows which is why CBS shows from the 70s are more plentiful than the ones from NBC or ABC, regardless of production company.
Very late to the game, but I believe that "What's My Line?" aired live during its network run and at the time, it was standard practice to make kinescopes of live shows. I believe that "Password" was prerecorded on videotape.
And half a century later, they're playing the same game on the Tonight Show, the only difference being that they got rid of the non-celebrity contestants.
Gene Wood announcing on this edition of "Password." Of course, he would go on to be the announcer on both "Password Plus" and "Super Password." In fact, whenever he says "The Password is..." in that unmistakable voice, you think that you are, for a moment, listening to "Super Password."

That's the first time I knew Gene Wood announced for the original Password.
Albin Kampfer This seems to be his first one in general for any show from Goodson-Todman.
Jack Clark was the original Password announcer with Gene Wood occasionally filling in. Lee Vines then replaced Clark. Wood later became regular announcer for both Password Plus and then Super Password. Wood also brought back "The Password is ______ " midway through Super Password's network run.
Didn't we have the word "crab" in one of the episodes recently posted? I was hoping someone would say "crustacean" that time, but they never did. I'm so glad they started with it this time! They were going with the mean & grumpy person (i.e., "crabby") meaning of the word instead last time, and it didn't work nearly as well.
SaveThe TPC Yes, "crab" was used, and I hoped for the same as you. What about "lather" this time? Wouldn't "foam" have been both appropriate and obvious clue?

I thought someone *did* say foam, but maybe I'm thinking of a different episode. I have watched not only the ones Gary has posted but also a couple of others this weekend, so they all begin to blur together. I would have to watch this one through again to find the "lather" part -- unless you have an idea about how many minutes into the show it came up.
SuperWinterborn Well, that was a lot easier than I expected! "Lather" was the first password, and in fact, "foam" was the first clue! There are lots of different kinds of foam, though (my first thought on hearing it would be that soft, spongy stuff that is put into cushions and such), and the contestant's response of "fume" was actually way off track, -- responding to sound rather than meaning on the first clue? He got it right away on his next turn, though -- probably by putting all three clues together -- foam, shaving & soap. "Suds" would be another good clue for lather, I think.
SaveThe TPC I can't believe I could have missed Carol's "F-oa-am"! ;) His response was way off track, I agree. I do also think he responded to the sound rather than he meaning.
SaveThe TPC PS. Regarding Foam-Fume; When did they get the first Fire Extinguishers with foam, on the market?
There were/are at least a half-dozen versions of Password (according to Wiki) in languages other than English, including Maori(!). Reading a thread here caused me to wonder about how the game might be affected by being played in another language. After all, for example, according to Roger McNeil modern English has about 3 million words compared to French having about 60,000 (merci a l'Academie francaise, sans doute). Would that make the game different--easier or harder, I wonder?

The movie Tony Randall refers to at the end as "Amanda" must be "The Alphabet Murders". The reviews on the ibdb are not positive, but the idea of seeing Randall as Poirot is intriguing. I'm going to try to hunt down a copy.

I enjoyed the Alphabet Murders, but mainly because I liked the casting. So many British actors of that period that I love. Such a nice touch with the cameo of Margaret Rutherford and Stringer Davis from the Miss Marple films. I admired the quirky cinematography too. Watch out for the bit in the steam room with the mirrors. Also noted a continuity error in the steam room, involving the masseurs shoes. Would have benefitted from being in colour I feel.

boy does carol cheat in this game. Alan absolutely couldn't stop her from gesturing.
I love that the minister's immediate association with the word "alligator" was "handbag," followed by "pumps." I probably would have said the same things.

I thought gesturing was a no-no on Password? You could lift your voice, yes, but using your hand to mimic a crab walking seems more than a little obvious.

Carol and Tony are usually both great at this game, but they both messed up big time in this one.
