Doctor Who: What are you doing here?

- This was a birthday present I made for my friend's 40th in 2005.
We have a long-running in-joke about the phrase "What are you doing here?" cropping up everywhere in TV shows. As we also both like Doctor Who, doing this seemed like a good idea.
The original (which went to the end of Eccleston) took seven months to make - Six to watch all the episodes and one to edit it together. I've since updated it to the end of the 2008 series.
Enjoy.
Every few years I come back to watch this again, knowing it will cheer me up.
THAT is what I am doing here!
Same as what I'm doing here!
That was just what I was doing here 15 years ago...
Me too!
The silence will fall when the question is asked, the question that must never be answered: 'what are YOU doing here??'
"What are you doing here?"
-The Second Question
Mickeys is the best
What I doing here? What am I doing THERE?
Seems nobody knows what anyone is doing anywhere.
Welcome to the whoniverse :3
"What are you doing here?"
"What are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here?"
"What's that carpet doing here?"
XD
I'm an American, and my father introduced me to these classics around 93' I think. Such a wonderful show, I'd almost go as far as to say it enriched my life.
This is such a wonderful gift, you must be very good friends indeed. :) Kudos to you sir for making it, and also for keeping it up here on youtube for so long.
Take care
i cant get enough of dr who, thank you for posting this video so long ago. :)
im going to start saying this now and thien to people for a quick giggle. lol
There's a moment watching this when the phrase 'what are you doing here?' seems to free itself from basic language and reality
I love how there was a barrage of them and then the long shot of the guy in the labcoat closing the door, composing himslef, deep breath, then..."What are you doing here?'
Doctor who: a story of people where they aren't supposed to be.
5:30
"Whats the professor's room doing here?"
And K-9 "What am I doing here."
Classic
Good work... you are my new best friend!
I cannot watch Doctor Who without noticing every single time somebody asks "what are you doing here?"
Utterly amazing - I had no idea it was such a stock phrase (clearly to move the drama on). I can only guess at the amount of time it took you to make. Thank you for posting!
The correct answer is "Everybody's got to be somewhere."
This was brilliant! It needs to be updated with the rest of the series!!
Yes, there's been many more since 2008.
It must have taken you ages to find all these clips, a serious amount of dedication to the task ahead. Well done : )
The Dalek saying "What..are...you..doing...here?" cracked me up. Nicely done.
"Here, what are you doing?" *Immediately knocked out for breaking the pattern*
It had to happen eventually!
After three years, you're the first person to point out a correct missing one. If there was a prize, you'd certainly get it.
Thanks!
Must of taken a few years to go through every episode to put this together.
Thanks.
"What... are these,... two men... doing... here." = ) This is awesome. I never noticed how many times they said this until it was all put together.
7:12 - 7:18 - possibly the coolest one ever!
You'd think something like this would be tiresome, but it's not - it's fun. What a terrific gift for your friend.
I won't congratulate you on the hard work putting it together because I know you must have had a whale of a time watching all those episodes.
After several minutes of the line being repeated, having it suddenly, silently mouthed by Ten to Donna forced a laugh out of me. Bravo.
This is hilarious. I like how with some of the clips you allowed there to be some anticipation even though we know what they ere going to say.
It's from the Evil of the Daleks, episode 2. It's on DVD as part of the "Lost in Time" collection of orphaned episodes.
A masterclass on patience and editing! Hilarious stuff and lots of admiration from me. Definitely in my favourites now.
Came back for a semi-regular viewing of your fine work. It's still one of the best things EVER.
I gave you 5 stars for going through all the doctors and even going through the reconstructed eps. My favorite is K-9 saying, "What am I doing here?"
I'm not entirely sure why I love this so much. About a minute into it I started laughing and couldn't actually stop!
Played this all the time back at school, this was a compilation before compilations were a thing.
Oh! This video's back! I thought it got taken down a long time ago. Glad it's back.
I can't decide if I feel awesome for watching this, or like I could've spent eight minutes actually watching part of an episode...
You rock for putting it together though, was an interesting watch!
It's painful to think just how much work must have gone into this. You'd have had to watch all the episodes, find the 'What are you doing here?' bits, somehow get the episode onto the computer and make it into a video. Genius. :)
i love how everyone answers what are you doing here by saying what are you doing here.
Almost fifty years, and he's still the same man, wondering what they're doing here.
It's amazing how when you hear something so many times, it gets completely reduced to meaningless sylabbles.
I love the bit when there's suspense as to whether someone is about to say, "What are you doing here?"
Ahh. So many good memories. Funny, I can remember most of the rest of each of those scenes just from those short clips and 3 words. XD
Congratulations for your patience and dedication. Remarquable piece of work.
I think I'm going insane watching this video!
That's a really good present for your friend! You really put a lot of thought and work into it! :D
Being a big-time Dr. Who fan from WAY back, I just gotta say, this is an excellent compolation you made! Kudos!
Kevy
ahaha I love it when the daleks say it xD And david tennant mouthing it to donna. I love doctor who. so much.
What am I doing here?
"What are you doing here" That's quite a philosophical question
"what are you doing here??"
"i'll explain later!"
This was quite amusing to see. It seems like it must have been a great deal of work-- even in six months, that's an awful lot of episodes to watch!
Props for including the recons from One and Two's eras. :o)
*grins from ear to ear*
This was the BEST!! lol omg i never realized how many times people said that. LMAO! You even included 10's funny miming. lol this was brillient! totally loved it!
Doctor who: most original scriptwriters ever. What were they doing there?
I’m glad this is back up. I don’t know why you would take it down?? It’s excellent.
Took a while to grow on me, but when things started getting variable, like with the Dalek saying it and the different ways and voices saying ti...it got to be amazing fun. Totally agree with the others that DT mouthing the words was a great scene and a wonderful addition to this.
Well that's just great isn't it? Now everytime I watch an episode, I'll be on the lookout for this question!
I agree about the Mickey bit - my personal fave of the whole thing. Well done, and a neat, mini walk-through of the Doctor lineage.
That must have taken a hell of a lot of time to put together but the result is fantastic.
After this, I don't think I can ever listen to that phrase again. @_@ Mad props for pulling off this video, though.
Oh man that cracked me up! That must have taken nearly forever to do. Even funnier than the B5 mix of all of Boxlietner/Sheridan's "No, no, no"s.
How did I end up here?
wow, that was a really sweet thing to do for your friend! this makes me wish i had an inside joke to make a video about!
I think you've stumbled upon the program's eternal appeal, and invented the world's greatest drinking game of all time. . .
The best part is when that person asks "What are you doing here?"
its amazing how often those five words show up
I will never watch a Dr. Who episode the same way again.
It's from "Music of the Spheres" - a short scene made especially for the Doctor Who themed concert at the BBC Proms earlier in the year.
Very clever - we will be watching for more "what you doing"
INCREDIBLE! Very entertaining, I can't begin to imagine the work involved in putting this together.
LOVE this, Hilarious. Every time a Dalek said it I just fell over laughing.
The Master and Dalek ones.
"Here, what are you doing--AAGH!"
The Robots of Death ones.
The scary blonde guy with the evil smile starting at 4:33.
Great stuff.
Excellent! You can see RTD's talent for dialogue though in that the phrase appeared in the last two far less. Although now i wish it was around
@BabyHermioneCat There are now nine missing, I think. Two that I missed (Robot; The Green Death) and another seven shown since I made this version. I'll update it once the new season finishes!
PS - thank you for this labor of love - this is hilarious.
Always loved the bit after the first one with Rose "I live here!" "Whatcha do that for!?"
Absolutely hilarious - I burst out laughing after the fifth or so "What are you doing here"! :) I would love to see a video like this for all the "It's bigger on the inside" lines!
Aaahh, all I can hear now is "What are you doing here?" going round and round my head!
Bravo! I can't believe how much work would go into this, but it was so worth it :D
I love that you included the miming from Partners in Crime.
7 months - wow - a labour of love.
Very nice work on this. I appreciate that time you took to put this together :-).
I applaud your perseverance. This video was amazing. Five stars.
I notice that when this question is asked TO the Doctor, he usually has one of two kinds of responses. Either some lie he makes up on the spot (which the askers frequently believe), or an honest answer like "i'm just a bit lost," "nothing really" or "just passing by" (which the askers almost NEVER believe).
AWESOME! This was a real treat to watch. What a great piece of work!
You know, I just realized that the Doctor was so stunned to see Donna that in the charades they do in "Partners in Crime" he mouths "What the HELL are you doing here." Don't remember him doing that before. :)
THanks for sharing. It's quite funny.
think about the sheer amount of effort it took to compile these clips...
I just watched the Dominators and I thought you missed a couple of "what are you doing here"--but you got them.
When david tennant goes "what the hell are you doing there" silently I lost it. haha
Regarding the stills in some of the moments: There were 97 lost episodes. Were. There are now 96 lost episodes. But they still have stills and audio. The other 96 are lost forever.
I think Doctor Who may have set a world record there(:
A good answer would be "well I have to be somewhere otherwise I'd be nowhere."
Best parts were the Daleks saying it, and the tenth Doctor's silent "What the hell are you doing here?" XD
My faves where the 10th Doctor mouthing it and the Micky/Ricky ones. XD I'll keep my ears open for it for now on. Great vid.
Amazing job, I love that you included the mime scene from partners in crime. Live long and prosper... Wait, wrong show. Dr who doesn't really have a long lasting catch phrase like that does it? They all seem to be Doctor specific, except for exterminate and it's bigger on the inside. Hmm...
So what exactly was I doing here? (Oh, right... deciding wether or not to start watching the original series... wondered off there a bit)
I liked the guy in the white coat, looking medical doctor like, who slowly closes the door and calmly turns... wait for it... wait for it... what are you doing here?
I just thought of another reoccurring phrase in Doctor Who--"I'll explain later." I don't want to think of the thousands of times the Doctor has said that line.
i still don't know what we're supposed to be doing here.
Brilliant, God knows how long this must have taken you.
Very impressive! Thanks for doing this. I have to share it with everyone I know, now.
This is hilarious! I commend you for the effort you put into this!
I must salute you. Time well spent.
Brilliant, unbelievable that there are that many 'what are you doing...?' lines, must have taken you forever to capture and edit.
