@@devilslayerthesaintofkille1317 from its inception, every Miyazaki film has had a girl as the protagonist, or at the very least she was sharing that spot with a male lead as well. Also yes, they were woke back then, look at their first film, the one made before they were even Ghibli, Nasuca, which was all about enviromentalism and anti-war. Ghibli has always been woke.
