    trackmania turbo for the DS was my first encounter of a high price on your hidden gems. 79 bucks for a game that should cost 9 at most on ebay. 2 months later it drop down to 49 which is still insane. I never bought it, but someone else did.

    Never thought Gumby would be a good game! Loved that show as a kid. Don't worry about the people complaining about prices, it's going to happen one way or another, you can't avoid it. I love your series, it definitely helps me discover news games that I never would have picked up before. I've actually come across games in the wild mentioned in your videos before and picked them up simply because of your recommendations of them being good games. Thanks so much for that! Keep up the great work MJR!

      @Janaquim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Hey guys. Love your hidden gems videos - thank you :). As for the discussion at the end of the video, I believe some of us might be looking at this the wrong way. You're not the ones driving prices up. The only thing you guys do is let us know about very cool games that we probably wouldn't know about otherwise - you're doing us a service :).
      If there's someone to blame here is us, when we decide to buy a game even if the price is ludicrous. That's what drives prices up. If re-sellers see they can get away with high prices, they will sell them at those prices. If there's not a market for expensive games, prices will go down.
      So please keep the hidden games coming. And Reggie, don't worry about this because it's definitely not your fault. :)

    IRONY: people complain about hidden gem games prices going up; majority of them wouldnt know about them if not for these kinds of videos. Also 2016, ROMs are a thing.

    • @---yn4np
      @---yn4np 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Also copyright and piracy laws are a thing

    • @JJclash
      @JJclash 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      There is nothing wrong with downloading ROMs that you aren't able to buy New. Not everyone can afford a physical copy + a system.
      However, yes it's piracy if the game is re-released as a digital copy somewhere. (e.g. Virtual Console).

    • @GameDjeenie
      @GameDjeenie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      ROMS are for people that are not into collecting but want to play the game anyway. Any collector prefer the real deal.

    • @JJclash
      @JJclash 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I didn't realise that every collector has enough disposable income to be able to buy every single game they desires to play.

    • @KeijiMaeda86
      @KeijiMaeda86 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To expand upon my original post....
      If you truly really dearly care about collecting the physical game and are a collector. Then price of a game going from $10 to $15 shouldn't matter to you. Because real talk, that's the "price hiking" that is, IF at all, happening. And for the few expensive and rare games, they are usually about $40.
      For people that just want to play the games because they are fun, using ROMs should not be an issue. Yeah yeah, its "piracy". But honestly devs and publishers only care if you are pirating their new releases. Seeing as they are not even making new copies of these games at all. Buying them used is not profit for the publisher and is seen as just bad to a publisher.

    I've walked out of stores with stacks of games that were mentioned in these Hidden Gems videos. No seriously, I bought like half of the PS3 "Hidden Gems" at Gamestop in one shot and said to the cashier "Metal Jesus sent me!" I got her cell number too. Didn't lead to anything, but still...I can confirm that these Hidden Gems videos are an absolute good in this world. Like butterscotch Krimpets or Surge soda. Absolute good.
    If you ask me, people are just complaining for the sake of complaining about something. "Drive the prices up"? If you already have the game, then you have no more need to be emotionally vested in its market. If you have to pay an extra dollar for it after the video comes out, and that dollar means that much to you, then you should have already gotten the game. Otherwise, suck it up, and more importantly, go get laid.

    The rising prices concern seems a little silly to me. If Gumby wasn't mentioned here, you wouldn't know to buy it anyways, so what do you care if it was $1; you would've passed it by. If the game goes up to $10,000, either way you won't own the game so it hasn't changed anything.
    And if you did already know about it, well then good for you, you bought it already after all, right?
    It's just a troll argument. If you follow that logic, you have to take down reviews about all things.
    Instead, let's keep the retro community thriving. It has some of the kindest people I ever met. Keep up the good work guys. :D

    I understand the position of Metal Jesus and Reggie on these Hidden Gems videos. They've helped me a lot in knowing what some of the games are like for my GBA,PSP and 3DS systems. From my experience,it's stores and online vendors who selfishly raise prices of "retro" games-perhaps after viewing videos like this. But that's just their opportunistic streak talking. Most of these videos by Metal Jesus,Lord Karnage,etc are just trying to recommend good games for people to seek out and play. That's all. So keep up the good work Metal Jesus and Reggie!

    • @schweatty
      @schweatty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vendors and stores are only raising the prices because the demand for these games goes up after these types of videos come out. people are exposed to games they may not have heard of that they think they might like, so they seek them out and buy them. if more people weren't buying them, the prices would not go up. in a free market, the prices don't just go up by themselves. there is no conspiracy among the sellers to raise prices when these videos come out. if you go to a store that does raise prices based on a YT vid, then go to another store or buy on-line. ebay has made it impossible for local price collusion to be possible anymore.

    • @Andregrindle
      @Andregrindle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't think that's true. Even with what you say,it's still the greed and avarice of the given store and vendor that drives the price up. These videos do not directly or indirectly cause games to go up in price. And schweatty perhaps you misunderstood. Obviously no store will raise the price of anything due to a TH-cam video specifically. My point was they MAY have seen it. And it MAY influence pricing choices. And it's hard for me to believe that there's a mad throng of people rushing to these places seeking out retro video games in the numbers it would take to influence prices. The local store in my area just decided to change the pricing system of their GBA games. They used to be a lower fixed price. Now they aren't. The reason they changed their policy was because,as I can see behind the counter,they use video game price guides to gauge how much the games are. Online list videos don't seem to influence the sales at all,or the pricing choices. Same goes for a lot of the indie vendors I've been to outside of town. They have collector guides. And they aren't being inundated with customers with attitudes like "we say a specific game on a TH-cam video,do you have it?". So I agree with Reggie and Metal Jesus here. It's not the fault of people like them that drives the prices up.

    • @schweatty
      @schweatty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not saying its anyone's fault, but they do have an influence on game sales. You said yourself in your first post "They've helped me a lot in knowing what some of the games are like for my GBA,PSP and 3DS systems." so you go out and buy what you like. so do the other 35,500 people that have seen this video as of the time i am typing this. i myself have bought games based on what i like from these hidden gems videos. and when more people buy the same games, that means the demand goes up. the supply of these old games is fixed and the better the game, the less likely someone is willing to sell it, so there are less games available than people willing to buy them and the price goes up. where do you think the price guides you are talking about determine the prices? its from observed transactions in the market. its not just made up numbers. bottom line: its not greed and avarice, its the basic economic principles of supply and demand.

    If you guys want to blame anyone don't blame the people giving these games the recognition they deserve, blame the greedy bloodsucking re-sellers that are actually making the decision to drastically drive up prices on games they paid pennies for at flea markets. A lot of you also need to blame yourselves for supporting and enabling that kind of BS. I wont even buy a toothpick from a asshole selling Earthbound for $400 on Ebay. I know a lot of you purists are gonna have a heart attack from this following statement but retro gaming FOR THE MOST PART isn't even best experienced on original hardware anymore anyway.
    There are a lot of new ways to enhance our retro gaming experience if you are willing to embrace the plethora of enhancements the present has to offer. In 2016 we can now enjoy many retro games without so many of the restrictions and inconvenience we had to endure back then. The recent Android Virtual boy emulator that utilizes color hacked roms and works with Google Cardboard instead of enduring the terrible design of the original Virtual Boy is a shining example of this.
    Of course this kind of stuff mainly applies to those that are actually in it for the games and not just having a bunch of great games looking pretty while collecting dust on the shelf. Before I get any replies from upset purists, please note it is very possible to be a collector who also utilities present options. Kinda like how MJR uses emulation to record retro gameplay for our viewing pleasure.

    Seems like if you JUST wanted to play the game, you could find a way to do it for free. The whole idea of a hidden gem is finding a new game to PLAY, not getting a scoop on the arbitrarily priced collector's market. This same thing happens on Guitar youtube. A guy reviews a cheap 20 year old overdrive pedal, suddenly they're going for 3 times what they were new.

    People are angry because the games they didn't know about are getting more expensive after your hidden gems videos.
    If they knew about these games beforehand, they would already have them.
    If they didn't know and you never made the video, they wouldn't know about these games anyway. So why are they angry? There is no logic.

    LOL, when I went to go pick up a copy of summon nights...Well, lets just say nearly copy was about $300+!!! Guess that's one hidden gem that's going to stay hidden for me, unless I get lucky and run into it in the wild for not un-outrageous price.
    Just want to say, I don't believe it's MJR's or any youtuber's fault by any means, it's just the nature of the beast. The term "hidden gem" is a such loaded term in our community, it infers rarity and quality, and that is; highly sought after (whether it actually is or isn't) and once a game gets labeled as such, especially by someone well-known like MJR with such a big audience, it becomes that much more "valuable" in the eyes of sellers and customers.
    It'd be almost impossible, to make videos about retro games and collecting them, without effecting the market value of those games. There is just no real way to combat that, sadly. With that said, I do believe that videos like these have a lot more positive effect on the hobby, than they do bad IMO. Games, especially good ones should not be kept secret, known only to those select few, and by showing them off, we increase amount of people who know about them, giving them a chance to appreciate it (whether through emulation or seeking out a real cart) and the potential to preserve them for future generations. Which is IMO, is THE most important aspect of our hobby.

    I don't care about game prices, I just go for original hardware + everdrive and I'm set for life. These videos are very helpful in selecting what games to play from the ENTIRE COLLECTION OF GAMES in the everdrive. Just having a very small selection of physical games I like the most is enough for me, I don't need a wall of games I'll NEVER play anyway.

    Yeah as you know I was one of the complainers about this, but again I also want to know about these games myself so I cant really blame you for sharing. I just wanted to say making a heads up post in patreon, like you did, before this video stating that you will be doing a hidden gems was really nice because then I could be prepared to spend some money if I saw things I liked and this time I was able to buy a couple of the games i saw here that interested me, so hopefully you can do that in the future as well!
    My Suggestions for Hidden Gems if you havent done them already:
    Froggers Adventures 1 & 2: This uses the classic movement of the original frogger and makes a story mode out of it, pretty decent platforming/adventure frogger game and both are really cheap.( I see one selling for $3 on ebay as im writing this)
    Dark Arena: It is basically a doom-like clone and works pretty good on the gba, I see you mentioned the doom ports on the gba.
    Those are the ones i think of atm,

Happy to see Sigma Star Saga on there I bought this game on clearance at Best Buy for five bucks years ago, and it quickly became a favorite of mine. For a future episode might I suggest Scurge: The Hive? I don't know if you've covered this game, it's on the DS as well, but it's like an isometric Metroid, it's pretty fun, minus some platforming issues due to the isometric view.

    Sure, these videos may have an effect on the prices of games but at the end of the day, you probably wouldn't even know to go out and buy them if it wasn't for people like MetalJesus! A big part of the retro gaming community in my opinion is TH-camrs talking about video games so people can share their passion for them! In case you're still wondering, the Bubble Bobble version shown in this video is the Arcade version; I've played the NES one to hell and back, and the palettes are different. Also, the problem with Round 99 might have something to do with the secret in the original version; you have to grab the crystal ball that shows up in the beginning on the right side of the stage, and then go into the door that shows up in the middle. You can beat the NES version without doing this, but you get the bad ending. I haven't played the GBA version too much, so I can't say for sure.

    Thank you for making this video. Grew up poor, so i found myself getting only games i knew I'd like, and the way I'd try other games was trading games over the weekend with friends, but now i just got a RG35XX(Handheld retro game device made by Anbernic).
    I always hated emulators on most devices, even PC. Just never felt right for many of the games. This RG35XX handled is perfect for experiencing those retro games, while feeling more authentic. Specifically gameboy games more so than something like ps1, but this device can handle both. They also have better devices that can handle more, with joysticks and whatever but the one i got is perfect for what i wanted it for. Again, thank you for this video, and love the channel.

      You could also use a flash cart (forget the name of the best one) and use a gba that's had a better screen modded (like $100). Play it on a real gameboy and put a ton of games on the flash cart that looks just like a real cartridge. A modded New 3DS xl is my favorite way though...love also having 3DS and DS games. So many good ones.
