This was a really well made video, even as not a SUPER avid magic player, this was really awesome to watch and learn about. Will be watching the house video now too! Thanks for all the content you make and work you do Jim, will always be rooting for you and your team at these events!
Cannot wait untl Chicago. You are the only reason I follow the Pro Tour and Worlds. Already booked my room for vegas in June so you have to make it to the next one too.
Love watching these. Feels like you are a very consistent player. Makes me wonder if you are just playing really safe or your deck choices are holding you back. Hard to say when Seth seems to win with whatever he decides to play.
I've been waiting for this video and was not disappointed. Except for the fact that you got wrecked day two :( I haven't been following as closely this year and seeing that you were in Worlds gave me a reason to be invested. Is there any way that you could do a video on what sponsors do for you as a creator/pro? I realize that it could be a bit sensitive for some of the sponsors, but also could be good advertising for them as well. Knowing WHAT a sponsor does for our guy makes us want to support them for their effort. Knowing only that they are a sponsor doesn't have the same impact. Would love to see what sponsors do versus what you have to pay on your own to attend tournaments. Since this is the dream of many players, i think it would generate massive views. You could also add visits to some of your sponsors to talk about the products (probably at a booths since many of them are in one place at tournaments. Thanks Jim.
19:37 is that a Norm Macdonald quote on the soundboard?! That's great haha Love these breakdowns by the way, I don't really play Magic any more and have never been in the competitive side (mostly just played at prerelease and standard events at my LGS) but I love these behind the scenes videos. These videos and your set reviews are always must-watch content for me.
I feel like I'd keep, if the cottage is fountain it's 100%, but I see your point of just whiffing on the first two draw steps and dying. Getting to see the fresh seven on the play is enticing.
Regarding the “Keep or Mulligan” cut down, sheoldred hand: I would’ve mulled for a better 6 and kept in mind if my opponent kept their 7. If they kept, hope to RNG Jesus that you’re 6 is the stone cold nuts. If they also mulled, that then gives more wiggle room to a possible mull to 5.
21:10 MULLIGAN. Your opponent is aggressive, and you have one interaction point before Sheoldred. Since the game is likely decided by the early turns, having a 5th land basically means your already down a relevant card in hand, so I wouldn't look at a mulligan as putting yourself a card down.
I have chosen to not return with under the skin before, it was a choice of either manifest the 3 mana creature or the instant, and the only other permanent in my gy was my reanimation target for next turn.
I did the maths for funsies for the 100 dollar pay out at the poker table. On average you'd need to play 3472,2 hands to complete the sheet for the hundo lol
on that match v Lucas Duchow on day 1 for the keep or mulligan, my gut reaction was keep before you asked the question but purely because I think cut down their 1st body and then hope to draw out of it - sheoldred wins the game if you get to it in theory. I am obviously a complete novice though so my advice is probably not very helpful and I can totally see mulligan to hope to draw into 2 kill spells which is pretty likely.
For the mulligan against gruul prowess, i want to keep and be vers unhappy about this. Cut down means prowess deck cannot greed too much, restless cottage is always good and sheoldred turn 4 is a good way to stabilise the situation. In a local game store it is enough to keep. At world, well, i am not at worlds and Will not be.
I wish they would try out a free muligan on Arena just to see if it unbalances the game too much. Right now mulligan just feels terrible. You basicly give up a 15%+ win rate.
21:29 I paused. I would mull. Reason: this isn’t a match that generally comes down to card advantage and we have ways to dig out of flood, but this is effectively a 6. Sheoldred is the card you want to slam after depleting their resources so it wins. Not a turn 4 board stabilizer. I wouldn’t keep 6 lands and cut down, so the mull makes sense to maybe see more sideboard cards or more interaction: we have the play advantage, it’s imperative we find more early interaction to extend and leverage our lategame. Okay, unpausing. EDIT: Wild. Reid being resource greedy is par for the course, but this is farther on the control aspect than your average midrange deck. I am gonna go ahead and hard disagree with the team here and say your call was right.
There is some kind of shmutz or maybe a scratch on your camera that I have noticed in the last few videos. If you click to 12:37 and look at the Westgate white paper, you can clearly see it. Maybe it's something that can be wiped off? I think it's your web cam as it moves with the video and it happens throughout the green screen stuff.
This feels like a weird question but: how much of a given testing house member's errors in PT/Worlds drafts come down to just failure to memorize some pick-ordering or set of signals for the availability of a color combo? To some extent the testing house experience is studying for a test, and some of the input will just bounce out of memory, and the overwhelming share of the process seems to be getting true/verifiable information about the Limited environment.
Saw you going 4-0 and then missed the rest of the day. Came back wondering where is Jim? They showed many Golgari matches on stream (Seth among them, obviously) and they had the bean / overlord combo again and again... (I'm always amazed about the sheer luck Seth has... watch the final against Javier where he gets duressed turn 1, no bean, no lord... but rips bean and overlord turn 2 and 3 like a champ... Seth always feels like he plays invisible tutors on stream.) You should have finished much better, but your deck did not want to work, there is nothing to do about it. Still feels bad for you.
Keep - likely to get a cut down 2 for 1 which puts you even at cards from on the play, probably lets you survive at least til turn 4 with maybe only 1 probably 2 creatures on board while you have a sheoldred in play. With that being a worst case plan A draw 4 lands that doesn't seem that bad.
@JimDavisMTG haha absolutely, not used to thinking at that level of play! It's a hard mull decision. You'll get your top 8 finish soon, no question, keep on fighting.
The number of times you said mulligan in this video points the biggest problem with Magic as a serious game. This is a fixable problem, if Wizards ever decided to put game design first before endless product sales. But it's been a known, fundamental problem since the 1994 and never addressed, frustrating.
@JimDavisMTG massive bug. Big picture, the variance of drawing seven from sixty and one card per turn results in a massive percentage of dead games. Mulligans are a kludge, failed mechanic to address this in a small way.
It was such a privelage to play against you and use your draft decks! Did not expect to be in the video!
love watching these recaps, honestly really like seeing all of the draft decks from the house drafts
It's like an old school tournament report. Always look forward to these after a pro event.
Awesome Jim, and don't feel bad about being the 53rd best magic player in the world, that's an awesome achievement
Aside from the coverage itself, the next most exciting videos to watch are these recaps you do. Thank you and please never stop!
This was a really well made video, even as not a SUPER avid magic player, this was really awesome to watch and learn about. Will be watching the house video now too! Thanks for all the content you make and work you do Jim, will always be rooting for you and your team at these events!
Everyone in chat on the world's stream were begging to see jims games and not speed up the games they should listen to the fans' requests more
WotC listening fans? That would be a new one
Cannot wait untl Chicago. You are the only reason I follow the Pro Tour and Worlds. Already booked my room for vegas in June so you have to make it to the next one too.
Watched the other video already and liked it, good stuff Jim
It was great to meet you and play you at my first magicon.
The PT and worlds tournament reports are my favorite magic content anywhere!
21:29 my gut reaction was keep but your explanation made sense to me
I was actually there watching the match in person when he drew that hand and you could see how much he was lamenting having to mulligan that hand 😭
Love watching these. Feels like you are a very consistent player. Makes me wonder if you are just playing really safe or your deck choices are holding you back. Hard to say when Seth seems to win with whatever he decides to play.
Seth is much much better at magic than I am
Ton of Jim D memes in worlds chat that you got DQ'd for a smorgasbord of different reasons. It was real funny.
« Cassian ran up and put his opp’s entire deck in his mouth. DQ’d. »
So cool! Love these and the house video mini documentary was awesome
Excellent recap, thanks for going to the effort of sharing, the stuff for the protour house is great.
I've been waiting for this video and was not disappointed. Except for the fact that you got wrecked day two :( I haven't been following as closely this year and seeing that you were in Worlds gave me a reason to be invested.

Your son is just adorable. Love to see stuff like this. The house video was very cool too.
Great video always love these recaps
Awesome recap...keep this content on events coming please!
Hell yeah!! I've been looking forward to this!
Got to watch a little of your first round from the floor! Congrats on the day 2 and hopefully you get a little further next time.
Love this type of content!
Always love your recaps Jim! Too bad you couldn't make top 8 but wish you the best of luck for future tournaments
The best part of any PT or WC for me is watching these videos after the fact
That semi final was INSANE.
Cool insight. Thanks for this sort of video!
Loved this whole video, completely forgot I was eating dinner cause it was so incredibly entertaining 😂
I feel like I'd keep, if the cottage is fountain it's 100%, but I see your point of just whiffing on the first two draw steps and dying. Getting to see the fresh seven on the play is enticing.

Love this! You played awesome!
Jim let's hear some riffs on that SG!
Looking forward to Foundations review

Don't blame ya for mulligan, my instinct on that hand is mull since it's only 1 removal against such an aggro deck
I have chosen to not return with under the skin before, it was a choice of either manifest the 3 mana creature or the instant, and the only other permanent in my gy was my reanimation target for next turn.
Cottage, Cut Down, Sheoldred...on the play...snap keep.
woooo ive been waiting for this!
I did the maths for funsies for the 100 dollar pay out at the poker table. On average you'd need to play 3472,2 hands to complete the sheet for the hundo lol
Mulligan. I would really love to hear Reid's take though.
Pausing just to say, Mulligan. Only one interaction and relying on Sheoldred is too scary
I saw you there, it was right after you lost a match, didn’t feel right to ask you to sign my playmat or take a picture! GG man!
22:50 you can see me there with my black and white hat!!! 🎉
I would've mulliganed that 7 but I can understand the argument to keep it
that's a super tough call. on the play i feel like you probably keep. draw is an instant mulligan
I’d say mull, leaning on 1 removal spell seems iffy against a deck that relies on as much early chipping and chunking as it can get
on that match v Lucas Duchow on day 1 for the keep or mulligan, my gut reaction was keep before you asked the question but purely because I think cut down their 1st body and then hope to draw out of it - sheoldred wins the game if you get to it in theory. I am obviously a complete novice though so my advice is probably not very helpful and I can totally see mulligan to hope to draw into 2 kill spells which is pretty likely.
I would keep that cut down + shelly hand, but in a high stakes game like that, i would have mulled
For the mulligan against gruul prowess, i want to keep and be vers unhappy about this. Cut down means prowess deck cannot greed too much, restless cottage is always good and sheoldred turn 4 is a good way to stabilise the situation. In a local game store it is enough to keep. keep I think! flood risk is massive but it's tough
I think I would have mulliganed that hand too, though I get the points outlined by the team. Maybe it's closer than I initially thought it was. 🤔
I say keep, but after your explanation mulligan makes sense too
I think i keep cut down Sheoldred and the lands. But idk, game 3, I'm probably wrong. Still think I'd keep though

I'm pretty certain that's the shadow of the dog bed on the Karn cam, not a smudge. It's way too crisp looking to be on the lens of the camera.
@@obliqueObloquy Good eye! That's definitely it.
Making content full time and still able to qualify/prep/compete at the highest levels is ridiculous.
That pasta looked amazing. Can you share a recipe?
Anyone have recommendations for older Kai footage to watch?

I hope one day I'm lucky enough to go to a pro tour to play against you all :)
Y’all had lots of pasta! 🔱
I think I'd keep 5 lands+ cut down and sheoldred but its really borderline
I think I would have mulliganed too
Since you're already qualified for Chicago PT, will you still be going to Atlanta RCQ?
Atlanta is a GP, and I may go
I dont have a clue on how you guys do it so. Do you buy boxes of packs to test? How many?
We buy a case for drafting
@ Alright, thnks for answering. Btw, curious. For how many test runs of 4 people each gets u the case? 🤔
Keep, way too stressful to risk a land screw at worlds. Has removal and bomb
I said mulligan for the match against gruul. Paused for no spoilers hahaha
So about Nexus of Becoming...
LETS GOOO
I’d mulligan personally
Keep? But Im not a great midrange player
I probably keep
Saw you going 4-0 and then missed the rest of the day. Came back wondering where is Jim?
They showed many Golgari matches on stream (Seth among them, obviously) and they had the bean / overlord combo again and again... WHICH IS GREAT!!!
Keep but I'm gonna complain the whole time
love almost all the content, except the buttons, those seem pretty lame to me.
Nobody is walking into a Cut Down to two for one themself at a Pro Tour
@JimDavisMTG haha absolutely, not used to thinking at that level of play! It's a hard mull decision. You'll get your top 8 finish soon, no question, keep on fighting.
I'd mulligan.
I'd have mulled that hand (but then again i'm not playing at worlds)
Pretty sure the keep or mull is an easy mull, sheoldred isnt that good vs gruul, and if you dont draw a cheap spell youre instantly dead.
Mulligan
Mulligan.
I think it was an easy mull. I am with you and gabe.
Keep
Raw dog it.
First! Love the content!
