It drives me nuts that the crowd watching has no idea of the level of talent here, they just see it as another marching band. The level of commitment that a drum corps has is unrivaled. Every time I show someone a drum corps video that has no marching experience it’s like they don’t care at all. This is the true evolution of music and I have so much respect for these guys.
I miss these drum corps in general. Not all the flashy uniforms, bring these types of uniforms back. Make it classic again. And I’m not even an old timer
@snareplayer1 The corps was not out of step. The Cadets are the only known DCI corps who step off on the right foot instead of the left foot. Everyone is in time and in step with each other therefore nobody is out of step.
I can say that I've marched in front of that castle, it went by so quickly I barely noticed it. And it kills me to think how much worse my high school marching band was compared to the Cadets. Still an experience I'll never forget =)
I've loved my Cadets since '93...... it's been very distressing to see what's been happening to them this past season. I hope all those kids/people will be ok and they can move on as the extraordinary they are....... to me they're still the best most historical drum corps around
I agree...but..im a drum major instructor and im partical to different styles..like..not conducting at all..it took me a while to like that for parades.
Regarding the righ-foot step off: We added that in 1987. The music had so many different time signature changess that neither left or right foot step-offs were dominant during our show. So to get us out of the left foot step-off mentality, we did marching basics with both left and right foor step-offs combined with non-even sets (8, 7, 9, 3, 12, etc). In this way, the instructors (mainly Marc Sylvester) were able to delete the natural left-foot step-off tendency from our brains. Plus it was cool!
@theCultureShockband There's really no rule saying you have to start on the left. The Cadets are a more traditional corps with their straight leg fundamentals, and they're one of the few corps that still do it.
Look... I am an alum of a top 12 DCI corps (Freelancers 1987-1992) and I must say that whilst I appreciate the fact that this is not a judged performance, and that it is all for "fun", it is still a representation of the corps and the guard was downright embarrassing! They did not represent the professionalism and class that is the Cadets!
I read somewhere that the reason they step off on their right foot was because sometime in the 80s, they were rehearsing and they were annoying the director, so he told them to step off on their right foot, and it just kind of stuck. Then again, I read that on the internet. I still think it's a pretty neat story.
@svolypet I said it was often said that we worked harder than just about everybody else. I never said we worked SMARTER and that is the key difference. We averaged just 3-4 "free days" per tour and they usually included laundry in the morning. We were almost without fail one of the first corps in the lot at showsites and certainly one of the last to leave. FACT!
When was this? The drum majors' uniforms are gold and white instead of the burgondy. Also, was it me, or did it seem like they were stepping off on the left foot instead of their right?
does the best team in a sport always win? does the best car always take home the checkered? does the best drum corps always win i ask you that and the answer is no
trust me, anyone in drum corps knows the cadets... I went to Umass dartmouth, meaning my personal teacher taught their pit, and nearby Dartmouth high school was directed by their drumline guy (Jamie Eckert and Tom Aungst respectively). So I was exposed to a shit-ton of Cadets videos, practices, and music.
As I said.. I am a DCI Top 12 alum. You need not lecture to me about the rigors of tour as it was said taht nobody worked harder on tour than the Freelancers. All I am trying to say is that every time you put on the uniform and step off in public, you are representing your corps. You should always represent your corps in the best light possible.
@cainanuk No actually, I've been involved in marching for 7 years. I was being sarcastic because you are being ignorant calling the Cadets "unprofessional" for marching in a parade, and how no one works harder than the Freelancers. Don't ever remember the Freelancers beating the Cadets..
We added that in 1987. The music had so many different time signatures that neither left or right step-offs were dominant during the show. So to get us out of the left foot step-off tendency, we did basics with both left and right foor step-offs combined with non-even sets (8, 7, 9, 3, etc). In this way, we were able to lose the natural left-foot step-off tendency from our brains. Plus it was cool!
Ya know I enjoy the Cadets, but whats up with the Guard in parades. What happened to the military style marching, and the "we mean business style" of the old days. Now the prance around in jogging suits spinning and clapping. I don't get it. Also, what do the people that play in the pit during competitions do during parades? Someone please explain both to me.
@snareplayer1 uh you do know Cadets are the only corp who marches off their right leg first step off and they weren't even out of step. And the reason they were in track suits is because it was just A PARADE! Parades aren't judged or what! Plus it would look pretty foolish if the guard were in their full uniform and make up?
Wonder why right foot instead of left! Don’t car for all the pre drum Corp jumping around in front of drum Corp. I have a lot of respect for the old drum Corp . Sorry new ones look like sing and dance performance! I think of drum Corp as military !!!! Of corse my opinion !
Love the Cadets but gotta say the Color Guard bee bopping up the street not a great look compared to color guards of old on parade. (Cadet uniforms are the best)!
as the Dude said, 'well, like that's just your opinion man' And as an alum of the Garfield Cadets, and someone who's marched at Disney, I can say. "what the fuck are you talking about?" This is as close as these guys get to a day off during tour. They were fine. No one works harder than the Cadets. I think the larger questions is why the hell are they playing Danny Boy? What happened to the Lancers?
@cainanuk The dancing, is that not what the color guard presents on the field? Adding a "fun" visual element to the show instead of the regimented style of the battery and the horns? Sure, you and I would much rather see that style, but think about the people that they are performing for - they're not performing a competition for judges and DCI fans. They're performing for families who have never experienced drum corps, for all we know, that regimented style may come off as arrogance.
They step off with the right foot so the can break you of bad technique. If your used to marching left foot first you have the tendency to resort to bad habits from the past. If you have to learn Right foot first they can teach you the proper technique from the beginning breaking all bad habits. Or at least thats the plan lol...
@aenyxx Having looked at your profile, one can safely assume that you are new to the activity, so I will not now proceed to slap you down for your obvious ignorant comment. Have a nice day and get back to us when you are old enough to actually march. I think I hear your mommy calling!
Maybe they needed to perform something more extraordinary then
It's because this world is a matrix. That's why. Yes, it's unbelievable. But, I have gradually been accepting this.

90 years and puff gone. Nothing but memories left. What a shame. So sad that such a great drum corps is now history. 😭
This is the most Cadet baddassery I've seen in a non contained space.
That heel and toe. THAT HEEL AND TOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😮😭 DE-VA-STA-TING!!!!!
My God, they are so beautiful
@snareplayer1 The corps was not out of step. The Cadets are the only known DCI corps who step off on the right foot instead of the left foot. Everyone is in time and in step with each other therefore nobody is out of step.
I'm a random wind storm. Shaky Shaky. Don’t Glassmen also step off on right? Or they used to?
@@iAmNovaFilms No they don't. Only Cadets do
@@iAmNovaFilms yes the glassmen used to in my day
Glassmen
Can we take a moment to gaze upon the level of cleanest and pure talent as a unit at 1:26
I mean it's beautiful of they moved as a single unit there.
lol
Such a Gorgeous Corp! Sac is another!
I can say that I've marched in front of that castle, it went by so quickly I barely noticed it. And it kills me to think how much worse my high school marching band was compared to the Cadets. Still an experience I'll never forget =)
Imagine being at Disney and getting to encounter corps. That's true magic right there.
Most definitely!!!
The Cadets drumline played that hard ass cadence and all they got were a few claps and woohs...
Awesome as always. Thanks for recording and posting.
Omg. Those gated turns

The drum major is actually back-stepping while conducting . i cannot .

I remember the day when I went to Epcot one day... and then the cavaliers show a couple days after FML

Huh. I heard it was 85 because that certainly would make sense with Jeremiah, but good to know from an alum.
CLASS all the way!!
i remember marching in the magic kingdom, it was sooo sweet!!!!
their roll step is awesome....i like it :)
when the colorguard got out of the way it was like "oh shit!" the corp looked so fucking powerful at 1:28
How I’m gonna miss seeing this uniform in competition 😢

@aenyxx Freelancers went defunct in the mid 90's. Now they're fully on the Winter Guard/Drum Corp circuit.
I wish I was there

i dont think they look unprofessional. it just looks like they're having fun. plus it makes the corps look more military
Umm..? Cadets use relaxed straight legs while Crown uses strict straight legs.
They're leading with the right foot?

does anybody know why they step off on there right foot instead of left?

@blackpker124 there's only one Disney World
win
What is the piece they’re playing?
The last one is Danny Boy
Londonderry Air, also known as Danny Boy.
@1texaseagle They're probably the only drum corps that does it, at least in DCI. I've seen a few college bands that also do it.
It's a short parade. Should have been playing non-stop.

in the 80s there was a player who had a prosthetic hand..... she played the infamous "Maria" solo in their 1984 show West Side Story
Lucky dogs get to put their horns in a carry while not playing...
